The Long Game

The Long Game is back and this week we’re joined by the one and only David “Janko” Jankowski, 2024 New England PGA Teacher of the Year and owner of Golf Garage VT. First, Dave and Casey catch up after a week off to discuss recent travels, Peter Malnati’s emotional win inside the simulation, and Dave shares a controversial “Full Swing” Season 2 take.

Janko then joins the program after some technical difficulties [00:21:14], and we discuss he and Dave’s trip last week down to Pinehurst, North Carolina, where they teamed in the annual New England PGA Pro-Am. We go deep on the resort itself — from No. 2 and No. 4 to The Cradle — and why Pinehurst is such an incredible destination for golf sickos like us. We also preview the upcoming US Open there in June and Janko outlines the type of PGA TOUR pros whose games are tailor-made for Pinehurst No. 2.

Follow David “Janko” Jankowski (@janko_golfcoaching) & Golf Garage (@golfgaragevt) on Instagram and at jankogolf.com.

dave_gerhardt
All right case Good to see you. They left fresh players hoodie. How's the merch the merch the merch is good there.

00:06.59
Casey Ford
Yeah, ah tell you we'll get into it but the merch um the merch tent at the players was in a rough scene by Sunday morning I read. Somewhere in like a local paper or like a preview guide that it had opened the week before they opened it a week before the players to like locals so I was going through like everything from extra small men stuff to quadruple excel. So I found this this sharpie blue hoodie. Um.

00:22.12
dave_gerhardt
Um, yeah.

00:33.55
Casey Ford
Again, great idea to start the pob with some visual stuff but um, fall on Youtube. Yeah, so nice. Ah merch speaking a merch you've got ah it looks like a ah lime a lime cream cradle hat. Yeah.

00:39.33
dave_gerhardt
Um, all right. This is the cradle. This is the cradle spring edition. We're gonna talk about all. We're gonna talk about all this I'm just.

00:46.92
Casey Ford
Um, before we even this the we start recording I already wrote down in my notes that the episode of this the title this episode iss going to be a very special pineurst episode because ah your your coach Dave Gkowski djao coming on in a few minutes here to recap.

00:59.16
dave_gerhardt
Um I like that I like that.

01:05.62
Casey Ford
Ah, the trip that you and him took down to pinurt right? that played all the courses. A lot of the courses. Um, so tell me your experience. Yeah.

01:08.17
dave_gerhardt
Um, yeah, yeah, hold on I'm just texting him again. Do you want to join the pod I mean dude he I love him. He's just you just never know like I yeah.

01:15.69
Casey Ford
And this didn't come up the whole week you spent together.

01:25.73
dave_gerhardt
Like this has been on the calendar for weeks and I can't imagine and even we were in the airport on on Thursday and we're sitting there whenever we flew on. Yeah Thursday Wednesday night and he just randomly said to me he said Casey Thomas Ford and I said yeah, that's his name and he said ah so it's like. He was going. He was going through his calendar like looking and I was like all right. That was all I needed to say that he was he was going to be here, but it's all good. Um, before we talk about.

01:51.55
Casey Ford
Um, like that it sounds like I had a I had a class. Ah my senior college is a first day I have some reason I don't even know why but I was in a it was supposed to be like a creative writing class but it ended up being just poetry which is great because you had to read it out loud So that was what I wanted to do my senior at college. But ah, there's a real hippie guy up.

02:05.59
dave_gerhardt
Um, yeah, that's amazing.

02:11.47
Casey Ford
In ah in New Hampshire this this guy that basically was teaching a college poetry class but he's going through the class list doing attendance the first day just and he gets he goes. He says Casey Ford and he just pauses and he looks up. He goes that sounds like a president and I was like there's no chance. That's true. But I'm right here. And then I I proved that by not becoming the president. But I don't know made me think when you said I should have put in Casey Thomas Ford the way you said ceno said it sound like a revelation. So.

02:33.26
dave_gerhardt
Um, it's good. It is a good name. Good job.

02:40.27
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, yeah, he did. It's like a 3 like ah know 3 3 names um just real real quick but we we want to talk about I want I want to hear about your your experience your your half day at the players and we'll talk about pinehurst but you know Scotty Scotty won the players. Fantastic I think it's great for golf scotty just being scotty. But um, how about how about your boy. How about the boy Malnati like is that is this whole thing a simulation like first of all, we need to catch up like is is this very clear cjako who's not here right now but he was adamant. We're eating launch at Pinehurst. And he sees the screen that Rory Rory said something about the piff and how like they're actually fine. It's Greg Norman and live who who are morons then all these guys they go to they go to? Um, you know they they go hang out on h e's yacht is it is it clear that like is something happening. What's your what's going on in your.

03:19.45
Casey Ford
Yeah.

03:35.40
dave_gerhardt
Fill mein case. What's going on in the golf world is this happening is it going to get Don Cenko was like this is going to get done before the masters but it kind of seems like they're going to basically leave like ditch Greg Norman and live redo this whole thing with the pga tour involved and at some point we're going to have a super league I haven't listened to shock on start.

03:36.37
Casey Ford
It's.

03:53.87
dave_gerhardt
I haven't listened no laying up. It's been weeks I'm actually very out out of the golf world right now. So I'm I'm curious to hear where where we're at.

04:00.21
Casey Ford
Um, it's really funny. You say that because I was listening to shagun start my way to the office this morning and um, um Andy was out but 1 of the guy that was filling in for him I think brought up or one of them brought up that with the nollnotty win is this a simulation so that's pretty funny.

04:15.12
dave_gerhardt
That's what I mean like because I said because mulnadi's been like he's been the guy like you know the the the player directors and there's isn't he like the one guy I've heard about for the last year and a half about like he's the guy number 200 in the world. He represents the everyday guy and then this fucking guy wins.

04:17.80
Casey Ford
It's a script.

04:21.41
Casey Ford
Um, yeah, well.

04:31.30
dave_gerhardt
Give me a break.

04:32.90
Casey Ford
I well I have an answer for you. That's that I think we'll perfectly put a bow on all this um but real quick on like the Norman stuff I feel like that's been like goal number 1 of the top guys for the last year and a half two years to is.

04:39.65
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, yeah.

04:49.82
Casey Ford
Just get Norman out of that position like tiger a year and a half ago I think said like Greg needs to go and Rory's been saying that I think before anything happens they want that piece of it because he's the one that's kind of you know, throwing all the all the daggers and but um, the the easy answer here is. Peter Malnati won after what a nine year break recording on Monday morning he won yesterday because not a simulation. Not a script because Dave I want to tell you who I bet on this week and this will answer it for you I bet.

05:22.44
dave_gerhardt
Cam is you bet on cam.

05:24.11
Casey Ford
I bet on jordanpeath who is who is nice enough to bow up before the the weekend so didn't have to worry about that Mackenzie Hughes who had the lead I think until the eleventh Hole cameron young who really just needed a par on 18 and Justin Thomas who had the lead.

05:26.76
dave_gerhardt
Yes, yep.

05:35.98
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, yeah.

05:43.10
Casey Ford
Ah, to start Saturday and then proceeded to shoot like 80 with 40 putts so I as as we know I put the hecks on people he was like the only guy I didn't have couldn't cash out any of this stuff because I was in Vermont on a family trip for the weekend. So.

05:47.15
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, yeah.

05:59.64
dave_gerhardt
But what you couldn't catch it. You had no service. You had no service to cash out or it's like why? Why couldn't you cash out. We your phone note like so then note it knows if you're out of state. You can't cash out if you're out of state. That's insane.

06:02.22
Casey Ford
That's probably that That's probably the answer out of state betting. You can't you can't cash out of a bet. Oh yeah, every time you log into a betting app every time you log into a betting app. It's like ah it's like verifying your your location.

06:18.66
dave_gerhardt
You That's damn.

06:20.63
Casey Ford
If you close your phone for like 30 seconds you get a log back in. Yeah, if you want to bet on your computer like through the web like fan duel draftings. Whatever you have to download and like ah some kind of app that shares your location.

06:31.29
dave_gerhardt
So so could that could that be a big deal like if you were up a bunch and you wanted to like close that cash out of bet like could you could you cost yourself money by being out of in a state that doesn't have gambling regulated.

06:42.78
Casey Ford
Ah, put it this way I had like a $25 pre week pre pre tonament bet on Mackenzie Hughes that I could have cashed out for probably like six seven hundred bucks so yeah that's a bit is kind of a big deal but part hard to say I was on a.

06:49.92
dave_gerhardt
Um, yeah, damn what happened to Mac he didn't he didn't read the four he didn't study the 4 foundations of golf down the stretch.

07:01.46
Casey Ford
Ah, was driving home I was in a 4 hour drive home. So I couldn't really check, but.

07:03.92
dave_gerhardt
I I just read I was going through my emails catching up and early this morning and I get this guy Jeff Shacklefordd's email and and ah he he said that cam young I didn't watch any of the golf but he said cam young was asked after the event and he said ah.

07:09.74
Casey Ford
Yeah.

07:15.97
Casey Ford
Yes I have this written down.

07:20.65
dave_gerhardt
About about driving home a 4 hour drive with a one year old and a twoyear old.

07:22.68
Casey Ford
Yeah, they asked him after the round he but like he's still I think is 8 or 9 second place finishes. He's never won. He's like the rookie of the year but he's just never cashed in um and they ask him like what's ah, what's your mindset after after today he's like well I got a 4 hour ride home with a 1 in 2 year old so that's where.

07:36.41
dave_gerhardt
If.

07:41.40
Casey Ford
That's where my mind is right now which I felt yesterday I had a 4 hour ride home with a four year old and ah and a one year old and.

07:43.25
dave_gerhardt
I Love that. Ah I love that so much I love it just because like I'm picturing like them being at the tournament like after the round like he goes and puts his bag away goes in locker room and like his.

07:52.38
Casey Ford
Yeah.

07:57.91
dave_gerhardt
His wife is just like waiting for them in the car and he just gets in the car and then just drive home like he's just back to regular guy I Love that.

08:02.92
Casey Ford
Yeah I wonder if if the pros prefer when they I mean now they're getting away from Florida now we're on to Texas the next few weeks and and then Augusta and so on. But so many of these guys live in Florida but I'm sure it's that awkward distance from home. It's probably a 2 or 3 hour drive so they don't.

08:09.45
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, yeah.

08:17.61
dave_gerhardt
To big state.

08:21.75
Casey Ford
Fly. So yeah, it's like they just want to get the hell out of town. Um I'm sure they all live in po ofvijo and where was this one outside Tampa so not matter, not exactly around the corner. But but we we get to talk about this first I sent it to you the post great the post game interview.

08:27.33
dave_gerhardt
I think it was Tampa yeah so Mal Malnati wins yeah okay

08:40.22
Casey Ford
Did you shed it tear. Yeah, it was hard not to get misty at that I mean we talk about this a lot I remember we talked about it in our first episode and I felt this a lot like golf is is my favorite sport not because just because I love watch ah playing it but because these are the kind of things that can happen either. You know.

08:40.86
dave_gerhardt
It's great. Um.

08:48.66
dave_gerhardt
Dude.

08:57.28
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, yeah.

09:00.22
Casey Ford
Things to happen playing whether it's like a small tournament that you're in that you somehow win. But um, it can always shock you and and the fact that like tell me a sport where this can happen. Some guy who's been out of it can be can come out of nowhere and win have that kind of emotion. Um and like that wasn't a. Misty cry like Keegan got a little misty last year when he won ah in Connecticut um, but this was this was like when people say let it out. This is a let it out. He this was a sobbing this was ah a therapeutic almost and.

09:22.80
dave_gerhardt
Um, yeah, yeah, well Keegan's got like fifty fifty million yeah yeah Yeah well I mean he had a great heat.

09:35.44
Casey Ford
They they haven't had a lot of stars when this year Scotty won last last week I think this was a pretty pretty cool story.

09:41.11
dave_gerhardt
He had a great quote out he in you know in him talking about it after he basically said you know most 90% of us are out here to just like I just did the thing that most that 90% of us want which is just like win one tournament on the pga tour like make it to the pj tour and win a tournament. Um I didn't get misty.

09:51.83
Casey Ford
Yeah.

09:57.98
Casey Ford
Watching that interview.

09:58.63
dave_gerhardt
I was when I watched it I wasn't ah no I only I didn't because I think I watched like in the middle of something like my I think if I like had caught that in a different like trust me, dude I I got Misty like after blocky's hole in one with his interview with Amanda you know like I don't know why.

10:06.44
Casey Ford
Yeah, yeah.

10:15.00
Casey Ford
We'll cut that we'll cool cut. We'll cut that that's not good for your cred.

10:17.16
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, will cut that please cut. No no cut it cut to the clip of blocky right now Very did it go in and um, but I think you know and the wind blows a certain direction I can cry pretty easily I just I was like multitasking and I did see it. Um, but.

10:20.81
Casey Ford
Yeah, yeah.

10:28.71
Casey Ford
Well I'm at that age where I don't know if you were if you got there a few years ago where my kids are at just the right age where I see someone like win something in their're like it's so special to have you know become a dad and have your kid where I'm just like I'm still.

10:38.55
dave_gerhardt
Um, ah oh yeah.

10:44.96
Casey Ford
I Mean my my oldest is four but I'm still it's still fresh enough where that that can get me at any moment. Yeah.

10:46.47
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, well I think I think now god now now I think about it. So so what gets me is his son is his son is for and my kid is for and he gets it like and so I think I think when people win like and you have like a baby It's like okay, it's emotional like it's gonna be great because like one day it's so cool. You'll look back on the footage of like you know you with the little little kid there. But I think when the kid is 4 he actually knows like that's my dad and dad won like my my son is obsessed with like seeing people win and I think he would totally get that moment and so that is. Super cool and for them to see that and think you're so cool like I ran I ran in like a meaningless race 1 time and both of my kids thought that I would and they they were there and I got a medal and they thought it was like a so was like a superhero and so imagine seeing your your parent in that scenario would be pretty cool. Also the yellow the yellow ball story is fucking awesome and I was like this guy.

11:43.92
Casey Ford
Um I was just going to say it's going to be the first is that the I I don't know when he won nine years ago if he was rocking the yellow ball if that was even a marketable thing back then the pro if they had those back then but um, that he's got to be the first yellow ball Pga tour.

11:51.61
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, yeah, it's great.

12:02.60
Casey Ford
Winner right? I don't know about the senior tour I but actually he's probably like the there's been thirty there. But.

12:03.24
dave_gerhardt
Um, yeah, well, it's not look if we're being honest like leading up I care I care a lot about um I guess it's because I'm not that good of a player but like I care a lot about your swag on the golf course like and um I think it's important that you wear a nice uniform I've always felt that way in basketball baseball golf. Whatever. And malnadi out there. You know like the the two hundredth guy in the world with the kind of dorky looking bucket hat on like the straight up like sun protection bucket hat and the yellow ball was a tough look and I always thought that and then I hear him and he's like oh my son.

12:34.98
Casey Ford
Yeah.

12:36.75
dave_gerhardt
Told me he liked the yellow ball and so I played it and I'm like that is I could see myself doing exactly that like last year for last year for father's day. My son got me. Um this sonic hedgehog the sonic head cover and it's not like a regular size it. It is like humongous and i.

12:41.50
Casey Ford
Totally.

12:56.66
dave_gerhardt
Ah, humongous. It's upstairs right now because I I traveled for golf and he reminded he he hadn't seen the headcover in a while because my clubs have been away and so he's been playing with it. But it's literally like if you see me on the golf course. You're like oh that's the guy with the sonic the hedgehog head cover and. And I just owned it and it made me happy and it's like you know every time I see my golf bag I think of Sam and how much he loved the sonic and so I totally can relate to like if my kid was like play the yellow ball I'm like all right and then the fact that he won with that was amazing. Anything.

13:19.33
Casey Ford
Yeah, well I think I I I talked about um I do the Smiley face my ball but that came from like sitting with my daughter once after I had I played around I came home and I was just like I had a golf ball in my pocket and I had a sharpie and I like.

13:34.20
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, yeah, okay, you can draw on you can draw on this.

13:34.80
Casey Ford
Druid for her and then she liked it and I was like oh this is kind of a cool cool thing. Yeah I I totally get like that's that's kind of what I mean like he obviously Peter Monnotty is in the grand scheme of things. 1 of the best golfers on the planet like it's not even close you 8000000000 people and he's one of the best 200 right no question but

13:45.89
dave_gerhardt
Sure right.

13:54.19
Casey Ford
In the world we watched is I don't think there's a sports equivalent to like that guy doing what he did right? I mean it's not like it wasn't the deepest field in golf but golf is like a marathon like you. We talked about it like you can do the best you've ever done and still not come close like you have to have the week where no one else has their career week and. Ah, it's just such a cool story to me and he also gave us one I don't know if he saw us but 1 of the I think my favorite ah shot tracer of all time. Did you see the top ah wood he had from it's it just never got off like an ine off the ground unbelievable like that guy won a tournament over like.

14:23.12
dave_gerhardt
Um I did I did yeah right I did I saw it but it wasn't it wasn't it must not have been a top though because I said the screenshot that I saw was the ball speed was one fifty nine which is like he still must a.

14:32.89
Casey Ford
Big deal. Ah big money players. So and it it's.

14:43.11
dave_gerhardt
It might have been one of those where like you top it, but it still goes pretty pretty far. Yeah I've seen the tracker. Okay.

14:43.35
Casey Ford
You just saw a screenshot. Do you even seen the video you get to see the video. Yeah it like barely cret I crested it kind of worked out for where what? what he was needed to get around that that corner. But yeah, like that's as close to a pro like that's going to come to to topping it. But it's just cool like that's the guy that won he.

14:59.52
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

15:02.60
Casey Ford
Out of all these guys. That's the guy that won. But yeah, definitely I don't know if it's the first yellow ball winner but definitely bucket out yellow ball combo.

15:10.99
dave_gerhardt
The other thing on my list. Yeah there he is the man is here the other thing on my list. Okay, so we talked don't don't interrupt now just hang out for a minute. Um, we're flowing the podcast is going I'll tag you in in a minute.

15:15.66
Janko
Um I don't I don't know what I don't know.

15:23.00
dave_gerhardt
The other thing I want to mention to you case is I did watch on the flight I watched ah I'm halfway through full swing. So I I've I finished the Joel Dam the Joel Gino I think Joel Gino was my last episode which.

15:29.76
Casey Ford
Oh good. So that's what ah ah, 4 episode four and a half

15:38.11
Casey Ford
Yeah, so I'll tell you just going go really holy shit I was going to say my take was going into that I was like I'm kind of over this story because it's been so cool and I put the odds of them winning me kind of back.

15:41.72
dave_gerhardt
Give me a break give me a break with those 2 dude get I'm done with yes, get eject eject. Yeah.

15:54.97
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

15:56.82
Casey Ford
On on their ah just like being on there in their corner at like a million to one and after watching that I was like I mean that's as genuine as a moment on that plane as you can possibly get in in 2024 really

16:07.35
dave_gerhardt
I I guess Joel was crushed and Gino was not like that was like we've all had that like that's the emotional friend like you know and so like I guess I got to see more like and it seems like Joel is trending right now. But um.

16:11.41
Janko
Wolf.

16:13.84
Casey Ford
Yeah, so totally. Yeah.

16:24.39
Casey Ford
But how can you be out on that the guy the guy is like the way they set that whole episode up is without but before even saying it they set it up that he's drinking all the time right? like they show the first twenty minutes of that episode without saying it is him at sponsors events drinking or at home drinking.

16:24.49
dave_gerhardt
It's tough. It is tough I do feel for the guy that that that.

16:35.64
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, yeah.

16:41.68
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's fair.

16:43.78
Casey Ford
Um, so obviously there's some stuff going on there but I thought that was like ah in a world of sports where you get every single documentary made is produced by the guy that it's featured on you don't get very many pure moments and I thought like wow they really they they captured in season 1 the dynamic of. Him not believing in himself and and that was very raw and and cool and this one it's like he's kind of hit that that Mark um, and I saw an interview with him somewhere else where someone said to Damon I think a few weeks ago like last year did you make more on the course or off the course and he's like it was pretty close. So it's pretty hard. You know it shows like it's hard once you get that. The certain level the off the core stuff will can affect the rest but I thought it was a cool moment.

17:25.73
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, ah tough to tough juxtaposition for you know, Windham's meditating he's got the so he's got the the psych. You know it's he's really on the up.

17:34.42
Casey Ford
Can can I just say it looks It looks like we're about to interview one of those people that like is hiding their identities that you can't see their face. Yeah, where like we're gonna muffle his voice to talk about some mafia hit.

17:42.92
dave_gerhardt
Hank goes the head and the the witness all right? Let's let's let's let's flip over I go are you there can you hear us is this your phone.

17:50.30
Janko
Yeah, the the they I my I left my computer down at work and no no, this is my wife's cup little.

17:53.63
Casey Ford
Great and all in the wall for.

17:59.10
dave_gerhardt
Calling in you diaalin in.

18:05.65
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, but it's okay, we need. We got the audio is great and and and you're here and so Casey and I caught up. We talked about.

18:05.90
Janko
Whatever computer and the camera am I really dark in your picture.

18:07.89
Casey Ford
Um, yeah.

18:12.43
Janko
Well hold on I can just put it out I can let me try my.

18:17.67
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, what it Whatever whatever you want? So ah, Casey and I were gonna keep talking for a minute. Um, so so okay, so so I watched that that's great. My only the critique that I have about full swing is um, it's very good. It's entertaining. Not scratching the itch though. There's not enough I guess they needed to make the map like they're trying to make a net. You know the f one style show I I'm still missing that like.

18:39.23
Casey Ford
Yeah, yeah.

18:45.11
dave_gerhardt
You know you sent me that Keith Mitchell using the bounce like chipping video like there's not enough of that in in full swing. Do you know what? I'm saying.

18:46.22
Casey Ford
Yeah, so so I had an epiphany watching this is this is in my notes I've I have separate full swing notes I didn't know we're gonna get into this today. But what I realized watching that show is something I'm realizing a lot. For separate reasons. But just the age I'm getting to is this show is not made for me and it's not made for you where we're a we're at such a level of loving golf that you're right? It is the f 1 thing like I watched the f one show. It got me an f one I had no clue what was happening in fone.

19:06.62
dave_gerhardt
No no.

19:23.60
Casey Ford
I haven't watched it as much because I've paid more attention to FOne and I kind of know who wins certain races. So when this comes out a year later like the f one show does like with the first couple of seasons that I already I didn't know what was happening. Um, it's kind of an entry level like it has to serve the purpose of.

19:25.75
dave_gerhardt
So right. New artists right.

19:42.74
Casey Ford
Ah, setting the context and stage for everything when you and I already know 50% of it. So the stuff that I found I'm sure you did found the most interested in or just compelling in that show is the stuff like the behind the scenes stuff you just don't know I think there was almost in every one of those episodes.

19:44.26
dave_gerhardt
Sure.

20:00.69
Casey Ford
Um I don't know if you got there yet, but the Pga championship locker room they must have had great access there and they use like so much of that footage whether it's talking to like Joel Damon or Rory's talking to dej in their one scene or there's a big Tom Kim episode where it's a lot a lot us to do with the pj championship.

20:09.85
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, yes.

20:16.96
Janko
Chop.

20:19.38
Casey Ford
They just had access there and it was that was like I never saw that stuff I never get to see like in a tight locker room. That's not built for the pga tour like how these got these multimillionaires are kind of interacting with each other and these brands and all these different allegiances and live guys that stuff's compelling to me.

20:27.70
Janko
Alright.

20:37.79
Casey Ford
Stuff where they spend you know a whole episode explaining the format of the rider cup that's not and I know who wins and or loses like if they had the us had won I'd be like way more into those, you're gonna get there. That's the last couple episodes. But um, yeah, it's not.

20:44.10
dave_gerhardt
Right? right? right.

20:53.85
Casey Ford
Totally for me or you it's for to get the most collective people in that so you kind of I'm kind of in a place where I'm so starved for that that I need like I'll take whatever I can get god.

20:55.77
dave_gerhardt
Now I hear I hear you then then then there there there were some and there were some moments that like in that um it was after maybe it was after the us open. Where Rory was just like I just don't know what the fuck to do like I just need a fucking reboot. Um, like that stuff is like oh okay, yeah.

21:12.47
Casey Ford
yeah yeah yeah yeah I thought that was a I think they could tell they like signed him up for an episode before the year and then they start filming and it's like this J Monahan and Rory versus live thing is like this will be kind of our.

21:27.58
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, yeah.

21:30.68
Casey Ford
Film this like him at a charity then then kind of you know, yucking it up together and then obviously we know what happened towards the middle last summer and the betrayal and stuff so I don't think they really landed the plane with that. Um, but yeah.

21:36.38
dave_gerhardt
Yeah. Are let's bring in our guests. Ceno Can you can you roger I meet I'm muted. You can you come off Mute. Can you try that try that.

21:48.66
Casey Ford
Um, yeah, you look right now.

21:54.82
dave_gerhardt
You do look great. Can you can you click off a mute I muted you by accident Now you have to unmute there. You go sorry man all right? Good Good to see you So let's talk about. Um.

22:04.55
Janko
I Quip quip muting me.

22:10.21
dave_gerhardt
Let's talk about pinehurst. Yeah, first of all first of all case you're um, this guy this guy was just named um, new England New England Pga teacher of the year

22:12.65
Casey Ford
Can we set the stage a little bit you guys what you guys went down for um, Dave's first trip.

22:29.56
dave_gerhardt
So so yeah, yeah, so um.

22:31.20
Casey Ford
Congratulations.

22:32.96
Janko
Ah, thank you with that. It's been good timing to go down on our trip so we can talk about this but it was the new england pga holds a a travel pro am. Every spring um down to pine nurse this year we had to do it a year early because with the us open company month early. Yeah with us open coming they had they had to squeeze us in a little bit earlier. So um, we went down.

22:53.41
dave_gerhardt
A month early. Yeah.

23:09.66
Janko
A week earlier this year and it was good time. We had some some good weather. We had some cold weather. We had some good golf. We had some not so good golf. Well let's so but instead of.

23:21.21
dave_gerhardt
Some bad some some bad golf.

23:29.12
Casey Ford
Perfect.

23:29.15
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, well I will talk about that cenco do you know he told me he said he said he said to me 1 point like two and a half days in he looked at me and he said I like what I see we're trending we're trending then the the next day I shot a hundred but.

23:29.26
Janko
Not so good golf with some learning opportunities.

23:39.00
Casey Ford
Well i' just Goingnna say should we should should we set up real quick dave for our new listeners that maybe maybe have joined us since ceno's last appearance who who cenko is in your relationship.

23:52.39
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, yeah, sure. So as I mentioned this is Dave Jankowski he is ah a golf. He's a golf professional that I met up here in Vermont he was teaching for a while up here. He's a good, a great player in his in his own right? Multiple years has played in the pga national championship. We got to get him to. I get him through there to get him into the Pga this year the next block he no doubt we got connected. Ah the first cjao love that That's a great. Yep, that's a great first cjao um, and we got connected I started going to him a couple years ago

24:10.85
Casey Ford
The next blocky.

24:15.95
Janko
Or the first djako.

24:18.84
Casey Ford
That's right of that did it go in Roy.

24:29.54
dave_gerhardt
But we really connected last year he went from teaching at a place outside. He went the entrepreneur out built his own business. He operates a business called golf garage and he has an indoor facility here in South Burlington Vermont and he also just opened a second location in Lebanon in New Hampshire and it's amazing. He's changed my perspective on golf taking it from a you know sport that I would play for six months out of the year to a full-time you know year-round indoor sport taught me about the the actual how to swing I play golf my whole life and he's taught me from you know how to how to swing it track man numbers all the physics and geometry that you need to know to. How to hit the ball in the air and spin I've learned it all in the last year and a half and we've just we've also become friends like we talk a lot about business. We talk a lot about our family personal life stuff and um, he gets the opportunity to go on a couple of these trips where you can bring a group of 3 or 4 people we went to vegas in November. And then this was the one that I was really looking forward to which was going to Pinehurst and it's it's also pretty cool to be able to go and play. You know we work on golf a lot together but to be able to go play 4 rounds with the guy who helps you with your golf is is amazing. It's like it's better than having a great caddie your caddy tells you 1 thing cenko's like no just hit the. Hit that chippy 8 you've been working on here and so I feel like we learn more and I think we you know we've talked about golf instruction a lot in this podcast but it's 1 thing to get lessons to actually go and see have your coach or instructor. Whoever see you play is way different than sitting there and him you know.

26:03.49
dave_gerhardt
I sit and hit 57 irons in front of him on the track man like they're going to be pretty good when you actually get out on the course and it's ° and there's wind off the right and we haven't warmed up but we didn't hit any balls yet and I'm playing on on bermuda for the first time and I don't have no idea how to manage grain. It was. It's an incredible learning so we got down there. We played Pinehurst. We played pineurst number 6 number 2 number 4 number 8 and then and we came home. Oh and we played the cradle. We also played the cradle I chipped in to guess skin I had a hard.

26:33.59
Janko
We played We played the cradle Dave chipped in to get us a skin.

26:37.37
Casey Ford
Nice on the cradle or or course.

26:41.58
dave_gerhardt
On the cradle and I almost had a cradle hole in one I hard lipped out like we I have a I a hard a hard lipout on it. It bounce in it bounds in front of the cup spin and slipped outs but it didn't matter I didn't I don't have one so it is what it is.

26:46.35
Janko
Hard. Yeah.

26:50.50
Casey Ford
Wyndham Clark

26:55.87
Casey Ford
This will be very specific to just people who've played that. But do you know what hole was wasn't that up hole one in front of the bar was it.

27:02.60
dave_gerhardt
Um, ah it was it was maybe like so it was 5 Yeah yeah, but right below the no, no, not that one. No.

27:04.66
Janko
5 there five that short little up the hill one now that's 3 go in there. 4 comes back down. It's like the longer 1 yes, that 5 heads up up there.

27:08.19
Casey Ford
Not the 1 right below the bar right? Yeah down way downhill. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, got you way uphill next one next one comes back towards the yeah.

27:24.33
Janko
It's like it's like it's like e it's like seventy six yards might even be less than that and.

27:25.49
Casey Ford
Yeah, that that third hole is the one to get 1 on about four o'clock in the afternoon when there's 50 people there. It's pretty pretty fun.

27:26.40
dave_gerhardt
Yeah.

27:32.92
dave_gerhardt
Um, well so it's funny. You said that because we when we played the cradle when we played the cradle was like the most tame family. Friendly environment ever and then like when you sent me that video I was like what what plant? What? what course is this? This is utter insanity.

27:34.12
Janko
Yeah, bonkers.

27:38.69
Casey Ford
Same story every time I played it.

27:49.96
Janko
Dave was thrown way off. He's like different place and.

27:51.92
Casey Ford
Wait you guys didn't go see it like ah when there was I guess you guys weren't there on a weekend but still there was no crowd. Did you ever go over there afternoon. They it can get rowdy over there I was there I've been there a few Friday or Saturdays where people are definitely shoeless but shirtless and.

27:56.52
dave_gerhardt
Ah, we were We were sleeping.

27:56.74
Janko
Now.

28:09.26
Casey Ford
Can barely swing a club and it's dangerous I I don't know if you saw that video I I showed Dave that I took but ah yeah.

28:15.55
Janko
But two days we were on property over there. It was a little chillier too so people weren't in there people weren't getting after like they would if it was a °° um and they you know they have.

28:24.26
Casey Ford
That's bureau That's true. What.

28:30.84
Janko
Um, they have a lot of us open prep going on over there like gra just closed down There's there's construction vehicles around so it was it wasn't you know midsummer full-blown experience. But um. It was. It was a lot of fun. We were overall like 7 and I look over and I see one of my golf professional friends hitting a trap shot out of the bunker short of 3 and that's like thirty yards in your own a mat how do you even how do you even accomplish

28:57.23
Casey Ford
Um, yeah, yeah.

29:02.40
dave_gerhardt
He like he like he like elbowed me. He elbows me's like look it down there and I'm like what he goes. How is that guy in the bunker. He goes that guy's a golf professional. How is he in that Bunker I'm like I even know there was a bunker on that hole. Yeah.

29:03.37
Janko
Um, like how was that bunker shot. He's like Tony it.

29:19.99
Janko
I was pretty good was fun but with that you know ah know they've this is the fourth year they've done and I've gone every year next year they're gonna be adding in course 10 which is opening.

29:20.10
Casey Ford
Um, is it was this your first time down there.

29:24.98
Casey Ford
Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah.

29:34.90
Janko
So it'll be 2 4 10 and then nine so keeps getting a little better. A little better and better. It's just you know I've been lucky to be st andrews a couple of times and of course it's not st andrews. But if you're a golfer. It's like the whole town is golf.

29:34.81
Casey Ford
So key I don't know. Yeah.

29:49.23
Casey Ford
Yeah, it's this mission place.

29:52.89
Janko
As is St Andrews like everything just revolves around golf Everybody that's there as a golfer so you know it's just it's just a matter of putting yourself in that environment If you're really into golf. You can really appreciate everything going on there. It's It's a really cool spot.

30:04.45
Casey Ford
Yeah, not a ton to do except for golf that the year're there for golf they they make it's like a can for golf. It's a really really cool thing.

30:11.65
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, so that was that was my first time that was my first time ever doing something like that and that was what I wanted. That's okay, like we. So the fact that we stay like once we got there, we were there like our clubs are there. Your hotel is right there all the restaurants right? there.

30:12.40
Janko
That's it me.

30:30.54
dave_gerhardt
The food is good ons site you finish up, you have lunch at the deuce on Monday so we played we played number 2 on Monday and we should talk about that but we played number 2 on Monday we had lunch. It was like three o'clock two other guys we playing with went back to hotel cenko kind of looked at me. He's like I mean. We're at pinehurst we're down here to play golf like what are we going to do go sit in our room. The rest of the day so we went over he went over the shop. He's like hey where can we get on right now and he's like ah you guys could go play number 5 right now and we for two we we played 15 holes in 2 hours just me and him in a cart over on number 5 and it was like a muni type of course but we just.

31:03.22
Casey Ford
Um, yeah, right in.

31:07.40
dave_gerhardt
It felt it felt awesome. It was not like you don't have to think about where you're going to go like you're just there to play golf. There's food. There's everything is right there that is like the type of that was a proper proper golf trip.

31:17.60
Casey Ford
I love like the little schedule I think it's almost like a bag tech. They give you when you get there. It's like here's your itinerary here's where you have to be what time and it's so easy to get around it. It's it's really cool. It's still unbelievable ahable to me that where I'm going down. Um I'm playing number two a month to the day before. Opening round of the us open on that Thursday like years ago that Usda used to come in and like shut down courses for a year before us open now because they have this rotation I think they have better relationships with all the groundskeeping staffs of these courses. They can push it that way but it's unbelievable to me. We're we're going to play a month before I bet there'll be a lot of. You know some holes we can't play and stuff like that. But um, now that's ah it's a special place.

31:55.58
Janko
The Dave I never yeah I never told you with all of the stories I've told you on these trips of which half you can't even believe the first I was ever to pinehurst I was twelve years old and my my grandmother I remembered to this day. So my father got me a trip to go down there. Um, they put me on a plane sent me down there. They had you know this was what was it had to be you know, mid 80 s early 80 s drop you off. Bring you in put put you on a plane leave you with the stewardess they you get off the plane down there. Um Pinehurst picks you up I was there for a five day golf school I remember to this day my grandmother pressed in my pants. Press in my jacket because you had to wear pants and a jacket to dinner every day you had a roommate stayed in the carolina hotel my roommate I think was his father was a golf professional and at the club that Paul Azinger grew up on. That's all I can really remember but it was like. That was the first time like my back then you could just like put your kids on a plane and send them somewhere and they would pick you up and it was the coolest experience and then I showed back up four years ago and it was almost kind of like the same things you remember you know like pulling up to the hotel.

33:26.10
Janko
Like the nostalgia was the same same way. So um, it just one of those sort of places where yeah things kind of change over time. But um, a lot doesn't because people that are there just there for golf.

33:36.95
Casey Ford
Yeah, my friends and I we do we we do a trip every year and we have talked every year about switching up from pinehurst but they make it so easy and it's so like you said so golf focused that we go play more interesting courses. But it's because everyone's coming from different places. It's such just such an easy trip.

33:37.90
dave_gerhardt
Yeah I got it.

33:49.90
Janko
Yeah, yeah.

33:55.67
Casey Ford
They make it they make it so easy. So it's such a fond memory and in in my mind anytime we go then there I know.

33:58.78
Janko
I was trying to get Dave to buy 1 of those little houses there on the fifth I'm like eat I'm like easy flight I'm like come on. Let's go. Let's do this? yeah.

34:08.64
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, like I right now. Yeah I'm um I could I could probably grab one of the one of the houses on not 2 right now. but but but ah there's some insane.

34:12.92
Casey Ford
Next to next to rig next to Riggs.

34:18.81
Janko
Either that or we can go we you could just go straight to the the the fairway on number 4 just go straight to the top.

34:24.96
dave_gerhardt
This is insane.

34:25.28
Casey Ford
So I've never played for but we're playing on this trip down here. We're playing ten two which I'm looking forward to which they somehow.

34:31.39
Janko
It was actually it was actually that the the course to hole 4 the right.

34:35.44
Casey Ford
Oh whole 4 gotcha catch you get you.

34:36.37
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, 4 4 like that stretch 4 and 5 Yeah that stretch on 4 like 4 and 5 4 5 six seven area is just insane and and there was this one house that was massive in like under huge construction and Cco used to be in that world and I said to him oh like how long do you think they're gonna take on that and he goes.

34:48.56
Casey Ford
Um, yeah.

34:55.33
dave_gerhardt
Dude their fit that house has to be done for the Us open like that is what they're doing. That's what all these people are down. There're doing.

34:57.46
Casey Ford
I I get so confused by that course because every time I played they start us they start on like 14 or the whatever is the t closest to the first hole of number 4 the course number 4 they if you start in the afternoon sometimes they put you off there. So I get screwed up like the front and back is my.

35:16.14
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, yeah.

35:16.64
Casey Ford
Number 1 The first is always 14 Um, are is that the hole where it's like elevated t box and it's kind of a dog leg left a little bit but there's all these houses on the right black windows. Yeah, those are someone told the catty told us that's the same developer did every single one of those are beautiful.

35:23.60
dave_gerhardt
Yes, yeah, yeah, not not that the the worst thing that you can do is tell people about who's on your fantasy team and what golf shots you hit. But I'm going to tell you anyway Cenko and I both hit bombs on that hole. We we.

35:25.49
Janko
Yes.

35:41.19
dave_gerhardt
We we hit bombs on that hole and I hit an absolute laser to like two feet and I tapped it in for it was on the edge of the cup and it was the great. It was a great. It was just a fantastic birdie.

35:50.26
Casey Ford
Um, yeah.

35:51.50
Janko
That was that was a that was um, there were 2 real shots on that trip that stand out to me. There was the par 3 which was we start on 9 on number 4 So.

36:02.84
dave_gerhardt
Um, ah.

36:09.29
Janko
The um eleventh hole is a par three. It was really cold in the morning and Dave just pulls out a club to hit the artage. It was cold in the face when saw what I hit changed this club. We went through it but that hole in particular.

36:22.78
dave_gerhardt
Yeah.

36:27.87
Janko
Was a little warmer. Nice. We were kind of you know 1 38 the pin was kind of a little left a little slope there. You know you could get a wedge there if you hit it hard but had enough slope where it spun it was coming back. Probably into the bunker off the front of the green it was like just that right distance. So I get up there I'm talking my caddie onm between wedge and nine I said I'm just gonna I'm gonna take some off and carve a little 9 iron into the slope and hold it up there so it doesn't spin back. And Dave had wedge in his hand I knew he did and I saw him go back to the bag and he pulls out the 9 iron and he I mean he literally another lip out like hits it to a couple inches. But that's where you know where we are in the development of like his game and then. The the commitment. He's made to it and having a coach that he can do this with who I play as well and I compete as well and you know spin control is obviously the most important thing and where Dave was not only with his golf swing but I like to call it golf I q. Ah, kids golf iq just needed some work as well and there's a lot of people out there that just can't decipher the distance control piece of it and what spin means to that and your carry distance and where it ends up and um, you know the trip that we took out to Vegas.

37:56.99
Janko
In the fall was great, but it was it was I think it was a great starting point of like we've worked together. We got outside. We we saw some shots we saw some ball flight and we got to work this winter and and talk to that and. And go through some of the things where he still couldn't control his low point which is basically the bottom of his swing circle is in front of the ball with his driver and his driver is moving if zero is the target line through the ball on track man it would be negatives. Would be the left side of the ball for right handed player. So his glow points in front of the ball of his swing circle and his swing circles. Tip tilted left by ° so he creates an incredible amount of we call spin loft so the ball basically gets up and spins sideways. After seeing that out in Vegas we were able to you know, get in the lab talk this stuff talk through it and got him to some motions and movements to where he can control move his low point behind the ball get that swing direction more towards the 0 line. And be able to control the way the ball spins as far, not only vertically but horizontally and he was hitting bombs like we play up because there's a lot of different age groups. We were up on the white t's which is a box up on.

39:29.18
Janko
Number 2 on 18 he had yeah yeah he had sixty five yards in I mean the cad he says he's never seen it was the second longest drive. He'd ever seen on that hole and it was like the hole before that he hit it way right? and I'm like Dave he's like what do you I'm like Dave.

39:29.41
Casey Ford
I'm very familiar with it I know where it is yeah.

39:35.57
Casey Ford
Um, well.

39:40.56
Casey Ford
Um, yeah.

39:49.10
Janko
Where'd the ball start where to finish I'm like your low points forward. He got the next time he was able to he was able to turn that into a feel and a movement and get on the next tee and be able to change his feel. And then just absolutely rip a bomb. So that's where the indoor outdoor thing I mean you? Ah I'm going into a huge like piece of my business opening the second one where I'm going to be going into the whole how it's a combination of indoor outdoor. It's not either 1.

40:20.70
dave_gerhardt
Yeah.

40:23.68
Janko
You need to have a combination I Think if you go either way I think you're missing out and you're just turning your development into something that's way longer than it needs to be.

40:33.62
dave_gerhardt
Yeah I think it's cool to hear you spit it back like that and break down all the all the behind the scenes of it because I feel like what happens is then you're out there and you're not searching for it and I might not have it but I know I might not have it but I know I know what I need to do to. To get it and it might take a hole or 2 but you're not out there just for like 18 holes trying to find something and golf golf is really hard and so there's going to be days where like I just didn't have it for like 12 holes on our last day and that that is what it is but um, when you have when you have feels like that I think to your point. If. You just go out in the range and this will happen to me I could just go out to the range and I'm just swinging it and it looks okay I can then I go to track man and I'm like oh boy, this is way left again. It's just it's that source of truth that I think you need to be able to to calibrate that. But also. You know to me sending you loads of Instagram videos and Youtube clips. It's like everyone has their own swing and own things that they're working on. You know you you hit a high draw and sometimes that can be a hook and you're out on the course trying to work on hitting a high cut like. If I was working on your feels I would be way fucked like way way worse you and I are actually working on opposite things and so what' you know Cjako Ceno swings it like sick. He could swing at 6 to ° right.

41:42.20
Janko
Bad bad bad bad. Yeah.

I swing at 7 to ° left and so we have 2 opposite things that we're working on I just think it's cool to like have diagnoses what what that means for you and and to go out and and work it on there and um to do it at Pinehurst was was pretty sweet I will say. Could not put to save my life and we got to work on the putting part a part of that is mechanics but also I just was completely my mind was just blown by how much grain into the grain across the grain how much that stuff affects chipping and putting like really i. For four days I was not ever comfortable on the greens.

42:28.41
Janko
It it takes a while and you know going down there when you have when you go to 4 different courses except for 2 and 4 kind of similar every other green surface is different different speed different sort of grass different grains. So I mean. that's that's it that's ah a difficult piece of of the puzzle. Um, especially when you're up north and you head down south I mean that's always difficult. Regardless, um.

42:54.42
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, how do you feel about how do you feel about that as a as ah as a small window into an assessment of where your game is at as we head into you know tournament season and you got some competitive stuff coming up Cenko How do you.? How are you feeling about your game and where do you feel like you're at right now.

43:17.41
Janko
I mean my ball striking has probably never been better in my life. Um, my putting is my putting's really good I think when I get under a little bit more of a competitive environment I narrow in a little bit I made a putter grip change that my. Super happy with so I got to go back and revisit that. Um, but as far as you know, short game goes I feel like I have some good concepts and some good feels that I'm working on it. Um I think when you go down for a golf tournament the the long game stuff is sort of. Is where it is. You're not going to really change too much with that. So when you get down there. You really work on your feels around the greens and learning the grass and and identifying the golf course you're playing you know which shots you're really gonna need. Um. High soft ones or low skippers. You know like there's so many different ways to play these shots. Um and from what I understand that Pga Frisco which is the focus right now as has a lot of bunkers. There's a lot of you know, deep bunkers elevated green. So. Knowing that I got to you know do some work on track man just to build the fields to hit those shots and then I'm gonna get down a little bit early and work on that. Um you know to your point of you know, getting into the last day the fourth day and kind of in the afternoon losing it I mean 72.

44:41.17
dave_gerhardt
It just.

44:46.10
Janko
72 holes of golf look what happened to the leaders yesterday right? I mean when you get to that that fourth day the 72 holes of golf I think this is a big difference like you know with the live thing is 50 Four holes is way different than 72 holes

44:50.28
dave_gerhardt
Ah.

45:05.87
Janko
I'm sorry that's just my opinion I've played in a lot of 36 54 hold tournaments as a club professional and as an amateur once you get into the 72 holders this is this is this is big time. That's where the big time people are living.

45:21.52
dave_gerhardt
I Yeah, it's it's snow buno out there. But the course is great I will say um case I think pineurst turned me into a little bit of a golf architecture I'm big golf architecture guy now. Um, and I'm being kind of ah.

45:35.40
Casey Ford
And yeah, what do you think 2 versus 4

45:35.41
Janko
Oh.

45:41.46
dave_gerhardt
It's kind of a bit. It's kind of a bit but it's also kind of serious. So I I get it now and what was cool about it was um so 2 verses 4 I think 2 and I think somebody had told me this I I have grown more nostalgic for 2 I'm more interested in 2 after I don't think I I don't think as I was playing it I felt I feel the same way I'm like I want to go play.

45:58.20
Casey Ford
It grows on you. It's not like stunning. It's not visually like stunning like some courses can be.

46:01.43
dave_gerhardt
I want to go play 2 again right now. it's not no it's not you're just kind of like huh. But what was so cool about those courses 2 in particular was like there is no, there's no hazards there's no water There's just the putting surface and then. Fairway and then everything else and you just hit it right? and you hit a drive that's like five yards offline on that first when we played number two what is it called snake grass those those little Bushes I I must have been in 5 of those little Bushes and like you you. You had a tiny little push just that like you know, still hit a good drive but like a little bit off my line and I'm sitting up in one of those snake little snakegrassing and I just think it's cool and I think I haven't played golf overseas at all cenko is telling me a lot about this but just like how you can play some shots and how you're like trying to run balls up and punching out and using the contour and like.

46:37.95
Casey Ford
Um, yeah.

46:52.98
dave_gerhardt
You know, compare that to like Florida golf where there's like water left water right? or Jaco and I were talking about the place that I play up here. We we went through 18 holes at the course that I play at every hole is ob left hazard right? Hazard left ob be right? and like that sucks that's not a fun way to play. Um.

47:04.28
Casey Ford
Yeah, no, it's it's true. Yeah I where every time I go down there I play better at number 2 than any other any other courses because it's kind of hard to lose a ball there and that's my biggest problem is just.

47:10.60
dave_gerhardt
This was really really cool.

47:23.50
Casey Ford
You know sending one left off the tee and you can always find you can always find. It's like so well manicured there and it's all these you know these these thin trees you can kind of get through the pines and and balls kind of stick out. Um, so I I love that kind of golf. Um, and it's just every shots like makes you think it's it is. It's one.

47:38.96
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, but.

47:41.71
Casey Ford
First time we played it I remember just being like like this is like cool but it's definitely not the best course I've ever played and then the longer I get away from it. You know and going back to it for a second and third time is you really look forward to some of that stuff. Yeah.

47:53.15
dave_gerhardt
Just the greens there. It was pretty cool djago every every hole on number two like I would putt and then Cko be like yo come here. Check this out. He's like now think about when the pin is here and I'm like oh my God Just like where they can put the pins because of the contours of I I couldn't even imagine.

48:04.68
Casey Ford
Um, yeah.

48:08.95
Janko
It's rolling out of 13 and it's concrete. It's like you can't go for this pin. You have to be over here and like that's where the chess matching strategy is but you know what I love about number 2 as well as.

48:11.67
dave_gerhardt
And it's like.

48:12.57
Casey Ford
Now now.

48:24.94
Janko
You know it's firm. It's fast. The fairways are moving but you know for example, the fifth hole the par five like it's a dog leg left the fairway can'ts from right to left. Um, you can't have a draw in that hole or else you're down in that grass you have to cut something up into it. In order to hold that fairway in order to give yourself a chance to try and reach the green into it's not the longest hole. But if you don't then you're going to then you you know when you're further out you have a club that you could maybe have a little less spin on it roll it up on the green you know manage it that way come in right to left. Um, but the closer you get to the green that green is vicious. You get enough spin on it. You're coming back down sixty yards off the green. We saw another guy another golf professional that hit a little left I mean the thing went that it went like seven yards down off on the number four t box.

49:08.80
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, yeah.

49:22.00
Janko
And then the pin looked like it was like the top of the Empire State Building. It's just like it's the strategy and the things you have to think about to play those golf courses. That's why it's you know the Us hope and golf course is it's like you have to just. Golf your ball and.

49:45.57
Casey Ford
But I lost you there.

49:47.36
Janko
Ah.

49:47.53
dave_gerhardt
So that night I laid in bed and I was watching on my ipad and I pulled up to 2014 us open and watched those guys play and Phil yeah kimmer ran away with that one but on that whole Phil was where cenko and I both hit very good drives there.

49:57.98
Casey Ford
Um, kymer.

50:06.60
dave_gerhardt
That just rolled out of the fairway and we both were in that like first that that kind of deserty area over there and had had no way to go for it in the us open. Ah did you go for it I made birdie there I went back to back I went back to back on four and five f y

50:06.45
Janko
Speak for yourself I got it? No I got a I got a piece I got a piece of the fairway. Yeah.

50:08.90
Casey Ford
Um, yeah, yeah.

50:23.66
dave_gerhardt
You did oh you got a piece of farrow. Yeah, that's right, that's right, we we saw yours first and I was like oh shit this is not going to be mine. Um, but.

50:28.29
Casey Ford
So I was going to ask you I know ah with it might be a tough question or just a tough question not to answer scotty schuffler. But like maybe the question isn't what kind of golfer. Do you see? um or what golfer do you see winning winning this year there but maybe the type of golfer like what are the 3 things people really need to.

50:45.24
Janko
Um, yeah I mean ball ball striking is is definitely key. Obviously you really need to keep your ball and play off the tee I think you know shots gained off the tee is huge because once you start to miss it.

50:46.78
Casey Ford
Do there you said golf your ball but I mean ball striking is is huge there. What else.

51:02.90
Janko
You know you're really taking. Um, you're just putting sort of luck into factor like you could if you're having a lucky week you can be in the middle of the in that grass in Sand where you can get some spin on it all week but then gets just a little close to that stuff and they're up on little mounds and you sort of lose I mean you you have to be able to control spin into those greens. That's just really all there is to it if you can't control your spin now you are trying to play with the front of the green to slow the ball down. Because if you land it on the green and it releases and you're over the back of most of those holes good luck is all as I'm gonna say because it's um, you're gonna have your work cut out for you because most of the time you're gonna end up back off the front of the green. So I think it's gonna be. Yeah I think it's gonna be shots gained off the tee strokes gained I think the thing the t game is gonna be enormous, obviously putting is is gonna be huge and I mean you're gonna you're gonna miss greens. You got to have a good feel for your short game. So I think it's.

52:01.18
Casey Ford
I have a John daily moment.

52:14.99
Janko
Um, I think that those 3 pieces are going to be are going to be really really important.

52:28.80
dave_gerhardt
And then you know I was obsessed with the length portion of it and I feel partially like that was because we played it would be fun like we were saying like ah it's kind of a like it was still amazing. It would be fun to go back and tip it out and just just see what what shots you'd have in there. But. You know Jenko would keep saying to me like yes, it is going to be long. Um, but they have that thing so firm and fast that if you can keep the ball in the fairway. You know you're going to be getting thirty forty fifty yards a roll on these shots. It's not like a straight carry the whole way. Um. But you got to you got to be a great. You have to drive the ball great at that course to to play. Well you know like there's just there is no. You can't you can't score if you're not in the fairway because you just have no idea what you're going to get you. You might get lucky and have a totally fine lie over in that snake grass and stuff but like.

53:05.36
Casey Ford
Yeah, did the be in position.

53:19.73
Janko
And it it it heavily it heavily favors of a fade off the T The golf course heavily.

53:21.00
dave_gerhardt
You just can't risk that you have to be in the fairway and and so you got to hit it far and be able to be in the fairway That's kind of it right.

53:28.20
Casey Ford
Um, and you you meant? Yeah I was going to say Dave said he birded eighteen that had to been a good fade drive that found the fairway right.

53:37.17
dave_gerhardt
Yeah I just I aimed up to left side where those grandstands will be and I just ripped ripped a cut up there and I had like a sixty two yard sixty two yard little wedge and I made a putt and like 4 people that were eating lunch at the deuce clapped. It was great. It was a great moment.

53:49.90
Casey Ford
Yeah, that's what it's all about I've never had that we had someone in our group someone off the roof there which is a different reaction from the crowd.

53:50.37
Janko
And I said I said that I said to Dave could you imagine when that place was all gnarly bermuda everywhere where it's sand in that that grass now like I mean how do you? Even how do you? Yeah but I mean there you have no chance of of.

54:06.49
Casey Ford
Yeah, yeah, the photos are so different.

54:08.30
Janko
Putting spin I mean that you it must have been muslim really really difficult.

54:09.70
dave_gerhardt
No no.

54:20.29
dave_gerhardt
Yeah I watched I watched some videos from like ah 2004 us open maybe and I it looked like Augusta honestly, it was so green it looked so different and then I was like wait a second. This is piners and then I flipped over and I started reading about the restoration and all that stuff and I was like oh they put 20000 of those you know.

54:33.43
Casey Ford
Um, yeah.

54:37.51
dave_gerhardt
Bushes in there to to restore it. Um, you asked out number 4 number 4 was sweet also um, it reminded me of the course that you play out of. There's a lot of a lot of gill. You know I'm not an architecture guy but there's a lot of you know.

54:40.87
Casey Ford
Yeah.

54:52.18
Janko
Ah.

54:52.92
dave_gerhardt
Par 3 over waste bunker hazard type of stuff and that that course was sweet I actually thought the last course that we played number 8 was very off of the main ones like number 8 was a very very good course. Yeah yeah.

55:04.83
Casey Ford
It. It's my favorite non to I've never played 4 but the ones we've played. Yeah I'm looking forward to seeing ten two which is which is brand new I meant to ask you when you played number 2 um, did they tell you.

55:10.46
dave_gerhardt
So.

55:15.28
Janko
Yes.

55:18.81
Casey Ford
Like every bunker on that course is like ah you can ground your club it just wild right? I mean there's some places that are like you don't see that everywhere I Just we we didn't know if they were telling us that just to keep play moving or not because we we had some hackers in our group but.

55:32.26
Janko
Um, I think that when you have a place at Sandy like that just like what happened up at Kohler I think that they try to do that so that they're you know if you're.

55:32.68
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, it's.

55:34.83
Casey Ford
Ah, will that be the case for the for the for the open.

55:41.75
Casey Ford
Yeah.

55:46.32
Janko
And a sandy area going down to a bunker. How do you delineate? What? what is what all right? So my feeling will be they probably will just to kind of keep any of those rules issues out of it. Um, but yeah, it's It's certainly it's certainly interesting.

55:54.50
Casey Ford
Right? right.

56:04.18
Casey Ford
Um, right.

56:04.51
Janko
To play the golf course like that where you know you can you always you know the caddies. Always your mind you know you can take a practice me right? You know you can and I mean when you can feel the you know when you can feel the interaction with the ground. It certainly is a bonus.

56:15.84
Casey Ford
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

56:24.43
Casey Ford
Yeah, that life.

56:27.20
dave_gerhardt
I didn't know that and one of the guys in our group is just over there hacking away in the bunker like next to the green I'm like what hell is he doing. Ah.

56:33.57
Janko
Yeah, it So it certainly feels. It certainly feels weird at points. That's for sure. But it's ah yeah I mean like that's they're trying to get like traditional old school golf right? I mean that's.

56:33.65
Casey Ford
Yeah, it's like I don't know it's like you sure I can do this. It's funny.

56:38.32
dave_gerhardt
Oh.

56:42.54
Casey Ford
Yeah.

56:43.71
dave_gerhardt
Yeah.

56:46.93
Janko
That's kind of that's kind of what they're going for where where it all began.

56:50.34
Casey Ford
There.

56:57.51
Casey Ford
The cradle.

56:58.27
dave_gerhardt
Also just seeing just seeing how much effort like seeing what they're doing to be to get ready for that tournament is insane. How much just the footprint of like putting up those grandstands doing all that stuff makes you like how how much effort goes into ah into a Pga tour event nevermind a us open.

57:14.32
Casey Ford
There no.

57:15.88
dave_gerhardt
Is is pretty nuts. So um I gotta jump so we got we gotta We got a wrap but um ceno between now and the and the pga professional championship. What are you? What do you focus on what are you? What are you gonna work on what.

57:27.30
Janko
Me right now I'm just you know as I'm practicing I'm just making sure that you know my motion my transition like my my feel for what I'm doing with my swing direction and the shots I'm trying to hit.

57:30.77
dave_gerhardt
What's what's top your your your list in the in the golf world.

57:46.99
Janko
Think you know as you get closer to these tournaments. It's it's easier to try and like oh I got to you know I got to really you know, get Xy and z perfect and think you're never going to get everything perfect. You know there's going to be a lot of things that. Come in play when you show up to the property and I think that's where a short game putting really really comes in but I I used to really like really get myself worked up for these things. All this tournament's coming and as we work on. It's you know the better you get it. Just approaching it like you approach everything else the more it normalizes it I think that that's that's huge for me. So I try to just really you know I look at like my put my take my pressure mat out I just you know make sure that I feel like.

58:34.79
dave_gerhardt
Oh.

58:42.95
Janko
Pressure and my feet is in the right place I feel like my body's moving good I feel like my pivot's in a good place so I can start to just feel the way my body's moving when my body feels like it's not moving well is when you know it gets tough for me and I feel like I can't get my direction enough left. If I can take away sort of feeling like I'm going to hit the ball last and miss it left. You know I I play pretty good so you know that's really,. That's what I'll be focusing on is just how how the motion feels.

59:19.79
Casey Ford
And when's that event.

59:21.75
dave_gerhardt
And you're like if you've if you've put the work in and you've done what you need to do then you got to let let the rest take take care of itself right? The quote is ah the most dangerous creation of any society is the man who has nothing to lose you just got to show up with no expectations. Sorry Ka so when is the event. Yeah.

59:29.92
Janko
The event is the it's April Twenty Eighth to may first awesome event. They roll out the red carpet for us I wish we'd get a few more sponsors get a little bit more money I mean with the money they throw around on tour right now.

59:38.25
dave_gerhardt
May. All right.

59:49.67
Janko
Think they could throw us a little 7 figure check to prop up the the club pros in the world out there growing the game I mean it's like we talk about people that are seeing you know your clients and customers and golfers every day and growing the game.

01:00:00.60
dave_gerhardt
Right? Yeah, that'd be a great idea right.

01:00:06.80
Janko
Imagine if I purses on the pga professional championship war on the club pro side really grew the amount of talent that don't make it on tour that we could retain as golf Professionals would be incredible I don't I don't know where they're missing the boat on that right now. But um. You know that that's something I Always like to throw in there to to um, showcase like how there are some really good golf professionals out there and it'd be be nice to grow out versus.

01:00:42.00
Casey Ford
Well maybe what Tiger did for the pga tour is what Blocky's going to do for the pga pros follow him. Yeah, true. Yeah yeah, true.

01:00:43.94
Janko
Or tiger could do for the pga or tiger could do for the pga pros with with one. Yeah with what with 1 thing. A thanks for all you do? but um, that's enough. That's another pond.

01:00:52.78
dave_gerhardt
Right? with 1 check no doubt.

01:00:59.95
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, like this guy's literally teaching people how to hit the golf ball the right way. Can you can We help him out a little bit. Yeah, right.

01:01:02.90
Casey Ford
Yeah.

01:01:04.70
Janko
Let's go throw it out there at least when you make the cut can you can you cover our expenses.

01:01:09.25
Casey Ford
Um, yeah, really.

01:01:12.42
Janko
It sure does. But it's an honor and a pleasure. So yeah.

01:01:17.70
dave_gerhardt
No doubt. Yeah, it's it costs a little bit to get down there. So all right all right ceno thanks for popping in case I got to jump you got to jump you want to tell Rory to come on the pod.

01:01:25.65
Janko
I'd like to put 1 more thing in go go? Ah um, all you people listen and go find a good golf instructor work on your game get better.

01:01:31.59
Casey Ford
Yeah, um, we'll do sure.

01:01:33.12
dave_gerhardt
Put pull 1 more thing out put the message out.

01:01:39.65
dave_gerhardt
Yeah, yeah, that's it stop watching Youtube and Rory come on the pod rory needs to come on the pod. He's got he's got time now. He's off the board. He know he's going to be in with with with the pif soon ceno called it. You know we said and Peter Malnati the

01:01:44.38
Casey Ford
Um, and Rory come on the pod rory come on the pod.

01:01:55.91
Janko
I Mean our our conversation is coming full circle down there. You would you would you? You would think that one of us was on the board.

01:01:58.42
dave_gerhardt
Number 200 s player in the world who's on the the board of directors magically wins this week cenko huh think about that the fixes in the fixes in that's right, all.

01:02:09.92
Casey Ford
That's sure.

01:02:14.44
Casey Ford
Um, and I'll leave you with this I get some players stories I'll I'll get into next week with you but a tough look for Rory down in Ponte Vedra I don't know if you saw this clip being terrified of a frog. Did you see this. There's a frog next was ball and it jumped and he like he really had a moment. He was terrified.

01:02:24.58
dave_gerhardt
Now.

01:02:30.25
Casey Ford
Not a great look for the captain of the boston common bull frogs right? It's like if ah Jayson Tatum was afraid of like a leprechaun or something right? We can't we can't have that. So ah, if he wants to come on to discuss that what we're happy to have him so Rory come on the pod.

01:02:30.60
Janko
Okay.

01:02:37.65
dave_gerhardt
The great nugget. There's your clip for the week all right cjao I'll see you in the lab tomorrow casey I'll talk to you little but alright, see you see you guys.

01:02:39.83
Janko
Got talk to you soon guys. Thanks.

01:02:47.35
Casey Ford
Right? next guys.
