The State is a daily rundown of the headlines that matter to the East Lansing, MI community.
Hi, and welcome to The State. I'm your host, Rebecca McEvoy. Today's date is 10/13/2025. The forecast predicts that it will be a cool day with a high being 68 and a low being 43. The State is a daily podcast that brings you the stories that matter.
Speaker 1:Starting today off with MSU president says he didn't file charges against student protester. Michigan State University's president distanced himself from the pending disciplinary action against a pro Palestinian student activist accused by campus police of making him feel unsafe. In an interview on Thursday, Kevin Gustowitz said he has never filed a complaint against a student and that he only learned about the charges against social relations and policy senior Eli Fultz when he read a news article about the saga. Now moving on to our second story of the day. CORS and CAMS groups face university funding cuts amid new mission statement requirements.
Speaker 1:Groups included in the Council of Racial and Ethnic Students and the Council of Advocacy and Marginalized Students will no longer receive automatic funding from Michigan State University. To remain registered student organizations, they are required to change their mission statement in compliance with the university approved standards. Previously, dollars 25,000 was allocated to CORS and CAMS groups from the university and deposited into their RSO accounts. The activities department of ASMSU's student allocation board, including CORS and CAMS groups, has been frozen because ASMSU's governing documents are under review by the university. Now moving on to Beauty and the Beast National Tour performs at Wharton.
Speaker 1:Disney's classic Tale as Old as Time, Beauty and the Beast, will be performing at the Wharton Centre from October 14 to the nineteenth. Beauty and the Beast, directed and choreographed by Matt West, features music by Alan Menken, including his Academy Award winning score. The song, like Be Our Guest, was originally written by Menken and the late Howard Ashman. Kayla MacArthur, a swing and understudy for Beast and Gaston, who attended the University of Michigan, said the root of the story is a beautiful, whimsical, and romantic tale. He describes new comedy as a part of this theatrical performance.
Speaker 1:If you've never seen Beauty and the Beast, then it's still very true to the Disney film. And for our last story of the day, MSU Hockey falls four-three home opener after a buzzer beater goal. The number two Michigan State Spartans kicked off its season hosting a hockey East opponent, the New Hampshire Wildcats. Although the team was ready to be back on their home rink, the night was deja vu of last year's NCAA tournament, as the Spartans lost four to three, all three last second Wildcat goal.
