Rav Shlomo Katz delves into the wisdom of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov zy"a
So, today's going to be the last שִׁיעוּר that we do on the actual pilgrimage and we've דַוְקָא of רַבִּי נַחְמָן to אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל. We've דַוְקָא been taking our time because in רַבִּי נַחְמָן own words and in the experience that his חֲסִידִים had post the רַבִּי trip to אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל, everything changed after he was here. There was a whole new experience. It was a new revelation.
It was a new גִּלּוּי. He spoke about this a lot. And that's why it's important to pay to to take notice of a few things that happened along the way. We didn't get into every single detail.
That would be like a six-month series just on his trip to אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל because everything was everything that we could imagine was documented. So we spoke, we spoke about the pilgrimage towards אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל, the first שִׁיעוּר. Then we spoke about him arriving in אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל. And how רַבִּי נַחְמָן couldn't make it into to dock in in תֵּל אָבִיב in יָפוֹ and then get to יְרוּשָׁלַיִם, which he didn't, which he couldn't at this point.
And then a storm came, took the boat and it ended up docking in עַכּוֹ. And then we spoke about his the beginning of his trip in אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל in that area of חֵיפָה. But today we're going to be speaking about a few different places that the רַבִּי went to and some really interesting things that took place along the way. It looks like you have a lot of text.
I just had רַחְמָנוּת and I made the font much bigger for everyone, but it's also there's a lot of stories here with נְקֻדּוֹת חֲשׁוּבוֹת מְאֹד to to to pay attention to.So, have any of you ever been to מְעָרַת אֵלִיָּהוּ? Yeah? My grandson had his חַלָּקָה there. Your grandson has חַלָּקָה there, very special. In חֵיפָה? Yeah. Yeah? Yeah, it's very very special.
So, רַבִּי נַחְמָן came comes to אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל, he he gets off the the the boat. It was like the night before רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה. And then we spoke about that first רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה, עֲשֶׂרֶת יְמֵי תְּשׁוּבָה and יוֹם כִּפּוּר and now we're up to סֻכּוֹת.So, in this is from the סֵפֶר שִׁבְחֵי הָרַ"ן, which which is goes into detail about the journey, in great detail. Even though a lot of pieces of this journey is also brought in the סֵפֶר חַיֵּי מוֹהֲרַ"ן.
And now there's already tons of different manuscripts which go into greater detail and לִמּוּדִים וְכוּלֵי. But this is from שִׁבְחֵי הָרַ"ן, towards the end of שִׁבְחֵי הָרַ"ן. That's obviously a figure of speech.
Not It's not that the whole world went with them, but the עוֹלָם. You know what the עוֹלָם means? The עוֹלָם, the yeah, huh? Yeah, כִּילּוּ the עוֹלָם. Let's go, the עוֹלָם, the וֶועלְט. The וֶועלְט, right? The world.
So, a bunch of them went to מְעָרַת אֵלִיָּהוּ הַנָּבִיא, כָּל הַמּוֹעֵד סֻכּוֹת, רַבֵּינוּ הַקָּדוֹשׁ, רַבִּי נַחְמָן went with them לִמְעָרָה שֶׁל אֵלִיָּהוּ הַנָּבִיא.Now here, pay attention to interesting behavior.
Bless you. And רַבִּי נַחְמָן, it doesn't seem that he was really בְּשִׂמְחָה. Everyone's partying and
He sat there with a broken heart. There was this רַבִּי זְאֵב which we spoke about him two times ago. And whenever it says הָאִישׁ שֶׁהָיָה עִמּוֹ, that's this mysterious שַׁמָּשׁ that escorted רַבִּי נַחְמָן during his journey.
Which we said that in in בְּרֶסְלֶב there's a מְסוֹרָה that this was his תַּלְמִיד רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן. But then I heard from רַבִּי וַיְנְבֶּרְגֶר, he says it was רַבִּי יִצְחָק. So, I'm not sure. He's the brother of רַבִּי חַיְקְל.
So, but for now just רַבִּי נַחְמָן right hand man that that went with him on this journey. וְשָׁאַל, so this רַבִּי זְאֵב that was there asked the the שַׁמָּשׁ, מַה זֶּה וְעַל מַה זֶּה שֶׁהוּא בְּעַצְבוּת מֵרֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה עַד עַתָּה? What's going on? We've seen this dear רַבִּי from the moment that he got here till now, he doesn't he's not showing any emotions. Why does he look so sad?
There were already חֲסִידִים here in אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל, they're dancing, doing הַקָּפוֹת on שִׂמְחַת תּוֹרָה. רַבִּי נַחְמָן didn't want to get up to do any הַקָּפוֹת.
Any dancing, any סִבּוּבִים. He sat, he just sat there in a state of הַכְנָעָה and with his head bent.
Right after יוֹם טוֹב ends, he tells his שַׁמָּשׁ, בָּרוּךְ הַשֵּׁם, פָּעַלְתִּי מַה שֶׁרָצִיתִי עַל הַצַּד הַיּוֹתֵר טוֹב וְנָכוֹן. Which means, בָּרוּךְ הַשֵּׁם, I have accomplished what I set to accomplish by coming here to אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל in the best way possible, רַבִּי נַחְמָן says, in the best way possible. And the truth is, I started thinking to myself, man, אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל is just מַשֶּׁהוּ אַחֵר.
Maybe I'll stay here longer. But I want to go back home. I want to go back to חוּץ לָאָרֶץ.
Get the journey ready to go back home. Go and get us a place on a boat which will take us back to to, remember we were talking about the journey was through Turkey, through Istanbul. Let's get the journey, let let let let's set it in motion. So this is very interesting.
He wouldn't hear him. He refused to start traveling back home,
Because this שַׁמָּשׁ said I want to be in טְבֶרְיָה. Or that the שַׁמָּשׁ said, רַבִּי, you said you wanted to be in טְבֶרְיָה. I don't know which is the which is which which is... And no, I'm saying at a certain point he may have mentioned, I want to go to טְבֶרְיָה and there's a great reason for it as we'll see in a second.
So whatever it is, it didn't happen. They did not go back home. Remember we already said, when did he start going back home? After פּוּרִים.
פּוּרִים, after פּוּרִים time. Only then he starts going back home. So there's still a lot a lot that takes place. We're not going to do a six-month covering all these months, but this יִיד said no, it's not happening. So, so now we רַבִּי נַחְמָן answers him and he says, \"Oh, מֵאַחַר שֶׁאַתָּה מִתְאַוֶּה לִהְיוֹת בִּטְבֶרְיָה," it's your עִנְיָן, you have a תַּאֲוָה to be in טְבֶרְיָה, "לֵךְ וּסְחֹר חֲמוֹרִים לְשָׁם." Go and get some donkeys and we'll travel from חֵיפָה area to טְבֶרְיָה.
Why? רַבִּי נַחְמָן spoke a lot about this, about the מִדָּה of עַקְשָׁנוּת. How do you say עַקְשָׁן? Stubborn. Yeah, he it was not רַבִּי נַחְמָן עִנְיָן was not stubbornness.
He did mention stubbornness in one area of עֲבוֹדַת הַשֵּׁם.And I was thinking about this a lot yesterday because I was sharing with the חֶבְרֶה. I came to שׁוּל yesterday morning in a state of just קַטְנוּת. Like just feeling I'm so sorry הַשֵּׁם, I'm not I'm not I'm not feeling, I'm not passionate. And I was like, what am I doing? Like maybe I should just maybe I'll I'll wake up I'll go somewhere else דָּאוֶוען fast and And then I remembered that רַבִּי נַחְמָן has a whole teaching where he says that sometimes the whole עֲבוֹדָה of a יִיד is to דַּוְקָא learn how to serve הַשֵּׁם in a state of קַטְנוּת.
We all want to serve הַשֵּׁם in a state of גַּדְלוּת. Like that's what we think is is always the right way. When I I have to feel it. But רַבִּי נַחְמָן as we see on this journey teaches us that there's a big big סוֹד in discovering how to serve G-d when we say קַטְנוּת, it means it could mean in a contracted state of mind, but what it really means is is that when you're not really feeling it.
But there's a whole עֲבוֹדָה how to serve G-d when you're not really feeling it. You understand? But the יֵצֶר הָרָע comes and tells us, listen, if you're not really feeling it, don't be fake. הַשֵּׁם wants real, הַשֵּׁם wants authentic, you're you're learning חֲסִידוּת. You got to be authentic.
And if you're not feeling it, don't put on a show. רַבִּי נַחְמָן says don't put on a show, but serve G-d in the in the place that you're at, how you're feeling. So he wasn't into עַקְשָׁנוּת and stubbornness saying you got to, okay. If this is what it is, this is what it is.
It's very rare that רַבִּי נַחְמָן will say, this has to be like this no matter what, וְלֹא אִכְפַּת לִי מִשּׁוּם דָּבָר אַחֵר. Now this עִנְיָן of of learning how to serve הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא in a state of קַטְנוּת, this is you'll we're going to keep on seeing this not just in this journey, but throughout his life, this plays a very very big role. Now we get to טְבֶרְיָה. They got they got their donkeys and they started traveling to טְבֶרְיָה.
Just think about that. רַבִּי נַחְמָן of בְּרֶסְלֶב jumps on a donkey in the area of חֵיפָה and he rides to טְבֶרְיָה. That's a beautiful scenic, that's just just think about that. It's a beautiful thing.
Hm? Today it is, I don't know if it was back then. Why? Because the type of donkey? No. No, the route, meaning Israel became alive over the years, right? It probably had a natural... Yeah.
Right. So, so I'll say like this. It's true that the the Zionist imagery is that everything was disgusting here till 1948. And then 1948 everything started looking beautiful, right? I I know that's how I grew up too.
But I I think that first of all, whenever יִידְן were here, something beautiful was 100%. When Mark Twain, I mean, it's so funny how he became Mark Twain became the the reference to like to to all historical facts about everything that was happening you know, until here. All it is is one entry in a diary. Right? It's not like a whole זַאךְ.
But when I when I want to I want to explain, when I say that it was beautiful, I don't mean that the it was a paved path directly from it was all smooth, they figured out, right, it was 73, they figured out, you know, dry land that was always just there was no, you know, no uh ups and downs. What I mean is just the imagery of רַבִּי נַחְמָן on a donkey in אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל crossing over just to me is a beautiful, that that's what I mean. It's just a beautiful imagery of the צַדִּיק traveling the land like that. That's that's all I meant.
But I'm sure it wasn't easy.Okay. They they they arrive in טְבֶרְיָה towards the evening.
This is מַמָּשׁ beautiful. Word got out that רַבִּי נַחְמָן came there. And by now already he's not this mysterious guy that no one knows who he is like it was on the boat.
Here his name is already spreading and everyone's going in and out to מְקַבֵּל הִזְפָּנִים to receive to see his face and he's seeing people. They put on שַׁבָּת clothes.
This took place all night that people put on their יוֹם טוֹב clothes and they went to go greet רַבִּי נַחְמָן. When I was seven years old, the manager of the Dodgers came to my school. It was a guy named Tommy Lasorda.
He's not a יִיד. If you've heard of him, whatever. He was the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, that's a baseball team. And it was like...
Sorry, it was originally, I'm sorry, correct. Originally the Brooklyn Dodgers. I wasn't around when they were the Brooklyn Dodgers. But it's true.
And the Lakers were originally from Minneapolis. There was nothing originally from Los Angeles so much. But Tommy Lasorda came to הִלֵּל, the school that we were at. And since it was such a like wow, the manager of the Dodgers is coming.
I don't even know why the I have no idea why he was there. But my brother and I put on our put on our שַׁבָּת clothes. That's why I'm laughing over here. Thinking that everyone else was getting dressed like כָּבוֹדִיק for this occasion.
And we were the only two boys in the school that showed up with our שַׁבָּת. You see, I'm still traumatized by it till today. We were the only two boys that showed up in our שַׁבָּת clothes. Everyone else with their t-shirts and shorts and everything.
But רַבִּי נַחְמָן, they're wearing their שַׁבָּתְדִיקֶע clothes.וּבִתְחִלָּה, now this is just an interesting beautiful fact, נִתְאַכְסֵן בְּבֵית שְׁאֵר בְּשָׂרוֹ. First, he sleeps in the home of his cousin, He has he had a relative there, a great-grandson of רַב נַחְמָן of הוֹרִדֶנְקָא. Now who was רַבִּי נַחְמָన్ of הוֹרִדֶנְקָא? That was רַבִּי נַחְמָן grandfather.
Who was he married to? Remember the story? That the בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב מְשַׁדֵּךְ him with a woman that רַבִּי that that this רַבִּי נַחְמָן הוֹרִדֶנְקָא knew he didn't come home after his wedding. Remember the story? He didn't this רַבִּי נַחְמָן הוֹרִדֶנְקָא, he didn't come home after his wedding and this woman who was was מְשׁוּדֶּכֶת, the בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב set it up, she comes back to the בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב and says, \"I don't understand, you set me up with someone that was so, you said he was so הֵילִיג, so holy, so special.\" Do you remember this story? Just to rem- just to remind us. And so the בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב says, \"Let let let me talk to him.\" So he calls him, he figures out where he is. And רַבִּי נַחְמָן הוֹרִדֶנְקָא comes in and the בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב says, \"Why aren't you going home?\" And and he says to the בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב, \"If I know, you know.\" He says, \"Yeah, I I do know.
I just want to hear it from you.\" He says, "רַבִּי, you know that the moment she gives birth, she's going to die. And I cannot come home and have a I can't be the conscious cause of this woman's death.\"So, רַבִּי נַחְמָן was told by the בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב, \"But you understand that for her this is even worse than dying, this kind of experience?\" אֵין מַה לַעֲשׂוֹת, you have to do what you have to do.So he does go home and they do have a child. She gets pregnant but she's דָּאוֶוענִינְג her eyes out the whole time that the רִבּוֹנוֹ שֶׁל עוֹלָם should at least give her 30 days with her son, with her child. I mean, I think she knew it was a son.
And that's what happened. She cried בְּכִי with and he did too. And the baby was born. And they named him שִׂמְחָה.
That was רַבִּי נַחְמָן father. Right? And what was so sad is that the בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב heard that the woman died and then he said to everyone around, he says, \"I don't understand. How could you have stopped דָּאוֶוענִינְג? Why were you okay with only 30 days? Once the gates were open, why didn't you open them even wider?\"So this is רַבִּי נַחְמָן of הוֹרִדֶנְקָא, okay? And he's buried in אֶרֶץ. Did you were you there right now? No, last time.
Last time you were there? In טְבֶרְיָה, you said? Yeah. Right, last trip. So, רַבִּי נַחְמָן, this is his family, okay? So this is this cousin of his was a great-grandson of the same grandfather that he had. And in the beginning, that's where he stayed.
It was a small shack. But many people said, רַבִּי נַחְמָן, you need a big place, as the גְּמָרָא says, there are a few things that are מַרְחִיבִין דַּעְתּוֹ שֶׁל הָאָדָם.
There are a few things that expand the mind of a person, they bring a certain calmness. And one of them is a larger home. So there was another רַב in town, in טְבֶרְיָה, רַב צְבִי, and he had a big house and רַבִּי נַחְמָן moved into there.
Immediately he gets a message sent from רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְק. רַב מֶנְדְל of וִיטֶבְּסְק is not alive anymore, but רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְק who came on that initial pilgrimage journey, move to אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל with his רַבִּי רַב מֶנְדְל of וִיטֶבְּסְק, he's still alive and he's in טְבֶרְיָה. And רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְק sends a message immediately to רַבִּי נַחְמָן.
Do you know what יוֹם הַכָּזָה means? Do you know what it means to לְהַקִּיז דָּם? No, no. הַכָּזָה is... There was like it's יוֹם הַכָּזָה, it's like apparently this was Tuesday was was blood drawing day. Or whatever, you know, whatever.
He says, \"I I can't travel today because I have to go through this medical medical עִנְיָן. עַל כֵּן הוּא הַנִּמְנָע שֶׁיֵּלֵךְ אֶצְלוֹ לִתֵּן לוֹ שָׁלוֹם." So he just wanted to explain to רַבִּי נַחְמָן, \"I know you know that I live here and you haven't seen me. It's just because I'm I have I have a medical condition and I can't come to you today.\" הֵשִׁיב רַבֵּינוּ, רַבֵּינוּ sends the message back with the שָׁלִיחַ and he says, רַבִּי נַחְמָן says to the שָׁלִיחַ, tell רַב אַבְרָהָם קַאלִיסְקֶער the following, שֶׁבְּלֹא זֶה הָיָה בְּדַעְתּוֹ לֵילֵךְ אֵלָיו. Are you kidding me? You don't come to me? You're רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְק.
I am coming to you. Now, who was רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְק a תַּלְמִיד of besides רַב מֶנְדְל of וִיטֶבְּסְק? The מַגִּיד of מֶזְרִיטְשׁ. He's he's holding from like he's real יִחוּס in in in חֲסִידִישֶׁע וֶועלְט. He's really, and he was at the he was very close to רַב שְׁנֵיאוֹר זַלְמָן of לִיאַדִי.
This is רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְק is a great great huge figure in in רַבִּי נַחְמָן eyes as well. So רַבִּי נַחְמָן says, \"Are you kidding me? I'm going to come to you. I just haven't had a second to stop because people have been coming here day and night.\" וּמִיָּד הָלַךְ לְצַדִּיק הַנַּ"ל. And he goes right away to רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְק.
There was a lot of love in the room. This was extra. This was more than what whatever was seen until now.
I can't even explain to you how much love and כָּבוֹד רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְקֶער had for רַבִּי נַחְמָן. It's so beautiful. So beautiful.
It's such a beautiful thing.Sorry? Where he was before, they weren't. There were a few, it wasn't... No, טְבֶרְיָה was the center. 100%.
But but there were, like with מְעָרַת אֵלִיָּהוּ. There were חֲסִידִים there, but טְבֶרְיָה was where at at that time where it was happening. So רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְקֶער is saying, \"Please, you have to stay by me.
You have to sleep by me now.\" וְהֵשִׁיב רַבֵּינוּ, רַבִּי נַחְמָן says, "שֶׁזֶּה אִי אֶפְשָׁר שֶׁיַּעֲמֹד בִּקְבִיעוּת אֶצְלוֹ, אַךְ עַל שַׁבָּת אַחַת יִהְיֶה אֶצְלוֹ." I can't stay here for whatever the reasons were, but I'll come to you for a שַׁבָּת. וּבְיוֹם אַחַר שָׁלַח בִּשְׁבִילוֹ וְקִבְּלוֹ עַל שַׁבָּת הָרִאשׁוֹן פַּרְשַׁת נֹחַ. פַּרְשַׁת נֹחַ 1798, רַבִּי נַחְמָן of בְּרֶסְלֶב does שַׁבָּת in טְבֶרְיָה by רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְק.וּבְלֵיל שַׁבָּת, Friday night, when it's בְּרָכָה time, כָּפַף רַבֵּינוּ זַ"ל אֶת רֹאשׁוֹ שֶׁיְבָרֵךְ אוֹתוֹ. So רַבִּי נַחְמָן puts his head down, getting into motion for to receive a blessing from רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְקֶער.
Right? So but he jumped back בִּרְעָדָה גְדוֹלָה. He couldn't do it. רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְקֶער said, \"Are you kidding me? I can't bless you.\" וְדִבֵּר בְּהִתְלַהֲבוּת גָּדוֹל.
He started saying things really with a lot of enthusiasm and excite- excitement, Just get the imagery. רַבִּי נַחְמָן bows his head down, bends his head down before רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְק waiting to get a בְּרָכָה. רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְקֶער jolts backwards and he starts saying things, he couldn't people couldn't even understand what he said.
אֲבָל, אַךְ בְּסוֹף דְּבָרָיו, but when he finishes his words, שָׁמְעוּ שֶׁאָמַר אֵיךְ אָנוּ מִתְבַּיְּשִׁים בִּפְנֵי זֶרַע הַבַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב זִכְרוֹנוֹ לִבְרָכָה. רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְקֶער is saying, \"This is the בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב great-grandson. How could it have been right now that he bent his head before me?\" There was such יִרְאָה. There was such a state of awe and a recognition that רַבִּי נַחְמָן is the great-grandson of the בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב.
How could it be that he bent his head to me to receive a בְּרָכָה?Okay. He didn't want to bless him. But the other guy, mysterious
So the other guy that the שַׁמָּשׁ that's with רַבִּי נַחְמָן is like, \"Well, he's not going to I'm not the great-grandson of the בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב." So he bows his head, he bends his head and immediately he gives him a בְּרָכָה without even, you know. What שִׂמְחָה was at the סְעוּדָה there. And רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְקֶער asked רַבִּי נַחְמָן to say תּוֹרָה.
And רַבִּי נַחְמָן, continuing with his interesting mannerisms and decisions during this trip, לֹא רָצָה בְּשׁוּם אֹפֶן. He would not say תּוֹרָה. So רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְקֶער is saying תּוֹרָה.
That's what it was Friday night. That's what it was, the second meal on שַׁבָּת and שַׁלֹשׁ סְעוּדוֹת. Meaning, he was it sounded like he was just he was saying תּוֹרָה but you couldn't hear actually any words.
He was just screaming.I'll tell you a quick story. You know what I'm talking about. There was a שַׁבָּת in between a men's trip and a women's trip to Ukraine that I was because I was leading the men's trip on Sunday or Monday, and the women's trip ended on Thursday, that I stayed for שַׁבָּת in מֶז'יבּוּז'. And with and and my wife flew in and שׁוֹשַׁנָּה was there with חַיִּים and a few other people.
And Friday night we walked to the we stayed in מֶז'יבּוּז'. Friday night we went to the בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב שׁוּל for דָּאוֶוענִינְג. But I I don't know if we knew this before or not, but a קַארְלִינֶער בֵּית מִדְרָשׁ from בֵּיתָר was there for שַׁבָּת. Now, you know how they דָּאוֶוען in קַארְלִין? I you know, you always hear about it and then you experience it and it's even greater than what you were told before.
There's I'm not just talking screaming like, \"Oh, oh.\" There's body movements that you can't believe people are still standing, swaying, like throwing themselves, freaking out and screaming over and over again. Now, honestly, I couldn't make out a word. That's why I connected to what he what he said over here. I couldn't I couldn't hear I didn't know where they were on דָּאוֶוענִינְג.
I I started מִנְחָה three times. Till I realized they didn't even start מִנְחָה yet. קַבָּלַת שַׁבָּת was the same thing. But but I but you know what? They were for sure, they were דָּאוֶוענִינְג.
That that's for sure. What they were saying, I have no idea. I don't know where they were. I heard such scream.
There was I've never literally I was closing my eyes and the whole image, you know, the whole scene of walking around מֶז'יבּוּז' on a Friday night דָּאוֶוענִינְג in the מָקוֹם of the בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב הַקָּדוֹשׁ. Anyone that know anyone that's ever been in that שׁוּל. Jess, I think of you all the time over there. Everyone who anyone that's been in that שׁוּל knows that you're trans- whether you like it or not, you're taken captive.
Whether you like it or not. You can come in with all your מַחְשָׁבוֹת. I'm not feeling it. It's מַמָּשׁ walking into a completely completely different dimension. That's what it was like in there, but you couldn't hear what they were saying.
רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְקֶער is screaming תּוֹרוֹת and he's really saying תּוֹרוֹת but no one can hear what he's saying. But one thing he did say, but at the end, This is what it means to serve הַשֵׁם. Now, we don't see a lot that רַבִּי נַחְמָן goes out of his way to לְשַׁבֵּחַ וּלְפָאֵר others.
Not because he G-d forbid has anything against others. Just רַבִּי נַחְמָן didn't mince his words, you know, he was very careful with his words. But when it came to the תּוֹרָה of this צַדִּיק, רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְקֶער, בְּלִי שׁוּם עֵרֶךְ, רַב נֹסַן writes like he speaks about it about his תּוֹרָה in such a high level that we have no other example of this.
This is an interesting statement. שְׁלֵמוּת, meaning the complete picture of being a Jew and in עֲבוֹדַת הַשֵׁם, only רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְקֶער has. I've seen צַדִּיקִים, and remember רַבִּי נַחְמָן has seen the greatest of the תַּלְמִידִים of the בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב from the moment he's born because the צַדִּיקִים where רַבִּי נַחְמָן born in the בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב house in מֶז'יבּוּז' and the צַדִּיקִים would come right there and even after the בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב died.
And רַבִּי נַחְמָן is born 12 years after the בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב died. The בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב died in 1760, רַבִּי נַחְמָן was born in 1772, and they would still come back all the time to that house. He saw a lot of צַדִּיקִים. He knew them, he knew he knew what they were about, he knew what they were like.
He was used to that לָשׁוֹן. But he says, "שְׁלֵמוּת of a שְׁלֵמוּת הוּא רַק אֵצֶל הַצַּדִּיק הַקָּדוֹשׁ הַנַּ"ל."What's interesting is that when I I mean let's be honest, how many of you ever heard of רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְקֶער before these שִׁעוּרִים? Because unless you're really in the עִנְיָן, he's not a name like like uh the נַעַם אֱלִימֶלֶךְ, the רַבִּי רַב זוּשָׁא, קְדֻשַּׁת לֵוִי, obviously the אַלְטֶר רַבִּי. He's a big big נִסְתָּר. And the interesting thing was that what we do know about him, the little bit that we do know about him, is that there was מַחְלֹקֶת with him regarding the distribution of צְדָקָה that came from חוּץ לָאָרֶץ to אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל.
In the beginning of the story of רַבִּי נַחְמָן coming to אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל, they suspected him as being someone that was going to cause a lot of מַחְלֹקֶת, like we learned two times ago with רַב אַבְרָהָם of קַאלִיסְקֶער. The love that these two had, the כָּבוֹד these two had for each other was amazing. You want the air on now? Sure.It came from, yeah. I asked if you want it and Yeah.
This room is Yeah, yeah, we're good. No, this room is very funny. It goes it goes back and forth. There's no דֶּרֶךְ הַמְּמוּצָע here.
There's no מְמוּצָע, there's no Okay. Now, can you imagine רַבִּי נַחְמָן going through רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בַּר יוֹחַאי? Because now he's going to מֵירוֹן. After after טְבֶרְיָה. And רַבִּי נַחְמָן is on his way.
Now this is incredible. As you know, the intro to לִקּוּטֵי מוֹהֲרַ"ן is a whole teaching about the קְדֻשָּׁה of רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בַּר יוֹחַאי and Breslov... was always saying that Rebbe Nachman was showing here that he is directly the same נשמה of רב שמעון בר יוחאי. There's a famous story that one of the, it's a long story, I'm just going to get to the end of it, that one חסיד was trying to explain to someone why Rebbe Nachman began ליקוטי מוהר"ן with this whole thing about רב שמעון בר יוחאי, and or why it was added into there, it's a long story.
And then this חסיד said, what do you mean? שמעון בן יוחאי is the same גמטריא as נחמן בן שמחה. You could try it, you'll see that what I said is accurate. It's true. So there's a lot going on here.
So just imagining now Rebbe Nachman coming to Meron. First in טבריא, he goes to the grave to to the gravesite of his great of his grandfather, רב נחמן הורודנקר, his namesake. So those of you that have been there, you stood in a place that רב נחמן מברסלב stood as well. וגם שכרו חמורים, then they got more donkeys, ונסעו על כל המערות.
There were tons of caves in, there are, there still are, tons of caves in that whole area, טבריא to go to מירון. ובבואם למערת רב שמעון בן יוחאי, אזי בני הנעורים, there was a bunch of youth that joined them, עסקו בתפילה ובלימוד זוהר, כאשר פקד עליהם זו זכרונו לברכה. Rebbe Nachman told whoever came with him to רב שמעון בר יוחאי, you got to דאווען and you got to learn זוהר throughout the night. וממנו, but Rebbe Nachman's not, doesn't seem like he's doing what he told.
On the outside, you didn't really see much. He was just very happy.
And he'd keep on coming to his assistant and saying to him all the time, and we've seen this from the beginning of the trip, he would always go to his assistant and say אשריך. Meaning, it's so good for you that you're here. It's אשריך, praiseworthy, אשריך שהיית עמי, he would say.
At night, Rebbe Nachman is going from room to room in And he kept on telling them, you are here to learn זוהר הקדוש. והוא בעצמו לא אמר כלום, but he didn't say anything.
That means he was walking around with a ניגון in his in his in his heart and coming out of him, singing a certain ניגון. What we wouldn't do to figure out what Rebbe Nachman was singing while he's in מירון. I mean, I have a lot of speculation, I have a lot of ideas what it might be.
But imagine that. And until dawn, he was in such a great state, elated state of joy.
He's דאווענען for a few hours in the טלית and תפילין. He goes to the cave where הילל is buried. And they even know,
He said the 33rd and 34th chapter of תהילים. Even there, he's in a great state of joy.
Then they go to שמאי grave. He starts to get really sad.
And he even said, I didn't really see that one coming. Like, that's what he's basically saying. It's like, I don't know where this came from.
But then he said, oh no, no, there's actually a reason why I got so sad as we reached the קבר of שמאי, ולא גילה התירוץ, but he didn't explain what the תירוץ was. ומשם נסעו לשאר מערות, they're going to all these caves. ובבואם להר הגדול, they come to a great mountain, שיש שם על ראש ההר מערת התנא רבי קרוספדאי. There's a תנא, you know, that the תנא that that's חלק of מסורת of עם ישראל, רבי קרוספדאי, he's buried on the top of this hill.
You couldn't get up there with the donkey. So what did he do? קפץ מעל החמור, he jumps off the donkey, והלך הוא בעצמו עם האיש שהיה עמו, and he went with his assistant up this mountain.
It was almost like he was crawling to get there. ובשם נשתהה קצת וחזרו משם למערה אחרת והיו על מערה של ינוקא אחד, whatever, they they kept on going from cave to cave. But then they get to a cave of a ינוקא. What does a ינוקא mean? A child, like a young person. Doesn't say who.
Now listen to look at this. This was a cave that everyone was scared to enter.
Legend had it that there was a dangerous snake, ממש right there in the entrance to the מערה. גם אילן גדול היה על המערה הזאת, there was also a great tree there. Rebbe Nachman's the first to go in there and there was no snake.
Now, I'm just finish this and then we'll go to a teaching of Rebbe Nachman. And then from there on, Now, there's a teaching in in שיחות הר"ן, it's brought down, I believe, where Rebbe Nachman explains that, you know, he says, you know what the יצר הרע is? You know what it looks like? The יצר הרע is hold is comes to you and he says, right? What's in my hand? Right? In here, right? This is what you want, right? This is ממש what you want.
You can't see it. And the יצר הרע comes and says, you know, like everything that you could have ever desired, all the lusts in the world, this is, they're all in here, right here. And then Rebbe Nachman says the חכם knows, all you got to do is ask the בעל דבר, ask the other side, just open, open your hand. The whole world is scared.
Rebbe Nachman says, he's going to open his hand and you're going to see there's nothing in it. That's this world. That's the יצר הרע. making you, bringing you to this illusion that everything you, all the desires and lusts, they're really right here and you're working so hard, but like a נחש that's in a מערה that didn't, that that there wasn't.
And after Rebbe Nachman called the bluff, everyone else started going into there as well. And I think that maybe, like, perhaps we could say that a lot of, a lot of beautiful הייליגע נשמות that have felt tormented by their מחשבות, by their, by where their thoughts have taken them. Rebbe Nachman comes and tells them, you know, listen, come with me, we're going to open this hand together and you're going to see that there's nothing here. And now you could walk through.
And now everyone else can walk through. And I feel that that's something that Rebbe Nachman did throughout his life. And and it's there's much more to say about what I just said right now. I do want to just finish the what we planned for today.
But keep that in mind, maybe we'll get back to there one day, because Rebbe Nachman speaks about this, explicit ממש, like clearly, talking about the illusion that the יצר הרע presents before all of us. And all you got to do is call out the illusion, call out the bluff, and open the hand and realize there's nothing in there. Now, turn the page. Over here, what we're going to be, what we're going to be now, I I דוקא didn't want to, there's so much more to discuss regarding the trip and things that happened and wild things that were happening in regards to the war that was taking place back then with Napoleon. Rebbe Nachman goes back to טבריא, he got stuck in טבריא, goes to צפת.
In צפת, he was there for a few seconds, but rumors spread that Napoleon's about to conquer צפת. So, they kept on running around, then they then they go to עכו and they're trying to get out. They can't get out. It's a it's a very long story and it's very, it's very incredible, it's very thought provoking, וכולי.
But what I want us to to remind ourselves what Rebbe Nachman was doing in between all these things that were happening to him. Rebbe Nachman was busy writing Torah every day that he was here.
That the distance between the Torah of גלות and the Torah of ארץ ישראל is as different, is as distant as like east to west, as far as from east to west. ובכל יום ויום, every day that Rebbe Nachman was here, הלכו אליו הגדולים עם הקטנים לשם כדי לשמוע חכמת תורתו הקדושה והנוראה מאד. Parents would take their children, saying this is something you've never seen before and you'll never see again. And they would come and hear Torah from him.
ופעם אחת, this is amazing. They didn't mention his name, but a big This was a famous, well-known גדול both in Israel and outside the land.
They said about him, this this גדול knows ש"ס inside out and also knows קבלה. Now you have to understand, Rebbe Nachman knew ש"ס inside out, upside down, fold it over, open it up. Rebbe Nachman is as you learn any teaching of Rebbe Nachman, he'll quote half sentences in a גמרא יבמות, tie it to a זוהר in in פרשת פנחס and Rebbe Nachman's holding right there.
It's one of these brains we can't, we can't fathom. ובא אל רבינו, so this Rebbe comes to Rebbe Nachman, והזהיר להוציא כל איש מעליהם. And the entourage that came with him, and whoever was with Rebbe Nachman, this גדול said, everyone's got to get out of here right now.
No one stayed besides one person. Maybe Rebbe Nachman was was adamant on this. But this שמש stayed there.
So this גדול comes to Rebbe Nachman and he says to him like this: ידענו שכבוד תורתו לא בא לארץ ישראל כשאר ההמון במוחין דקטנות. We know that you coming to ארץ ישראל, it's not like the way most people come to ארץ ישראל. And he calls him out here.
Because there's a statement that says anyone that walks four אמות in ארץ ישראל merits to be a בן עולם הבא. He says, we're calling you out. We know, even though you've been saying that, we know that's not why you came here.
You're not here as a רב. You're not here as a tourist.
We know you're here for something much bigger. You got to stop this concealment game and and reveal what's going on. You came here לפעול השגה גדולה בעבודת הבורא יתברך. You came here to ארץ ישראל to connect yourself to a greater, a much greater level of serving השם that only exists from receiving the light from here.
We want to know from what point, from ארץ ישראל, through where in ארץ ישראל did what you're really here to accomplish, where did it go through? Now, I don't know if he's speaking about a a location or he's speaking about a מהלך of thinking, like where did things start happening for you. But he basically wants Rebbe Nachman to reveal himself and to reveal why he's really here. Because it was very, very, very unheard of that someone would make such a pilgrimage, especially the בעל שם טוב great-grandson.
And we want to know, And this צדיק said to Rebbe Nachman, and I'm telling you, right now, I'm yours. I I I you just let let let me know what this ענין was, and I am fully, fully subdued to you. I'm I'm ממש yours.
Rebbe Nachman answers him, Please, you're you're giving me עגמת נפש. You're causing me pain.
Maybe I took upon myself an oath to not reveal and now you're pushing my, you're pushing me. And of course I want to reveal, but I took this upon myself, he's hinting to him. You, don't cause me this sadness and pain.
והתחיל שוב, but this רב, he was in action. He was stubborn. He was persistent.
You know, I had a friend one time came to the אמשינובער רבי for a טיש, and by the טיש, the רבי sometimes gives out, uh, פלחים תפוזים, like uh, orange, uh, not full oranges, but maybe sometimes just one piece of an orange or apple. I was there once, I think I got an apple, piece of cake, something. And he would, you know, and he gives you לחיים, and he looks into your eyes and he tells you לחיים טובים ולשלום for like a minute, each person. That's a very long time to say three words.
Think about it. Right? It's 20 seconds, ממש 20 seconds a word. This guy wouldn't have it. And he threw the orange back at the רבי, and he said, you are so much greater than this.
Tell us who you really are and what's really going to be. Before you even get the words out, the שמייסים took this guy, threw him across the room. This guy was out of there. The צדיקים are doing what they're doing.
You see by the רבי sometimes in these videos, people come to the, sometimes you have like old Moroccan women that, you see him. It's always like an old Moroccan woman comes to the רבי and says, reveal yourself, you know. There's a startling video of a woman that lost a son. And she said, I want my son.
I want my son. Reveal yourself. Come and bring, say, say, משיח here, you're משיח. Bring משיח now.
I want my son. I want my son. Groner is usually very, uh, you know, מקפיד, the secretary, the few of them were, when things these things would happen, I've seen videos where they really take the person out, but this time they didn't, the רבי didn't motion to, and he's It's very interesting in the back and forth, like people when they become persistent with with with wanting something to happen. This צדיק comes to Rebbe Nachman and he's not, even though Rebbe Nachman just said what you're doing is making me feel so sad.
And the guy's like, I don't care. There's a bigger purpose here. Reveal why you're here. What you're, what are you doing here? Teach us.
What did it, what does it mean to come to the Holy Land? Teach it to us. He said, you know what, fine. But what we're begging you, ילמדנו רבינו איזה חידוש מחידושיו הנחמדים והנעימים אשר חננו השם.
He said, you know what? Let's try like this. Give over to us a חידוש that you've had since you're here. חידוש of Torah.
Give us a taste of it. We're not trying to make life hard for you. You're a רבי, we need to learn Torah.
And maybe through what you're, the חידוש of Torah you're going to say, we could understand what we really want to know, which is what is this ענין that you're here for and how did you, how did it work? How did it happen? Rebbe Nachman's face became like fiery coals. פניו נבערו ונתלהבו כלפידים ממש.
Rebbe Nachman's face started looking like beams of fire. His his hair even started like like flying back and he the his hat came off. He threw his hat off of his head because it was burning too much.
So he starts to say like them like this: הידעתם סוד כוונת התפילין? Do you know the secrets of the כוונה of תפילין? Meaning the inner dimension, the פנימיות of why why we put on תפילין. So this רב, remember the one that was thorough with throughout all of ש"ס and קבלה.
So he started sharing with him some of his, some of the things that he knew. And then Rebbe Nachman says to him, And since you don't really know the secret of the כוונה of תפילין, that means you don't know the secrets of the four winds of ארץ ישראל.
And now I'll reveal to you a little bit of a רמז regarding this matter. ויהי, this sounds like a movie, okay? It's trippy.
He starts bleeding from his throat. They're not letting me. You're trying so hard, but don't you see I'm like, you pushed me.
I asked you a שיילה. It was clear you're not holding. So I started speaking, but and I'm, he says, you think I I caused this? Starting blood is coming out of his mouth. I can't believe you're still coming to this שיעור.
That's the truth. After things like. You know? ותיכף, look at the next page, we'll end with this.
The רב sees this with his own eyes, נענע לו ראשו. He shakes his head and He says, please forgive me for what I pushed you to do. וניבהל מאד מזה, and he got very freaked out from this.
Now, he wouldn't move until Rebbe Nachman forgave him. But remember, how many people are in the room? Three. Three.
It's like, it's not that he was trying to show something, there was there was there was no crowd. It was just something taking place between this צדיק מקובל. I'm sure he was a, I'm sure he was a great, great צדיק that really, really wanted to, he wanted the צדיק to reveal. It was very sincere.
And I actually got a lot of חזוק from this story. Even though it's so, it's so, my God, what is this? I actually got a lot of, a lot of כח from this. Because there are people, there are צדיקים, I'm בכוונה, you could already imagine who I'm referring to, but someone that we have been by and we were just by, that is a צדיק on on on levels that we can't understand and is a גאון on levels that we can't understand. And we barely even understand what he says when he speaks.
And quite often some of the חברא are sitting there and are trying so hard to like, what are you, just, just say it, you know? Just just, please, you know, and it and it's coming from a real רצון of of wanting to remove concealment from this world and have clarity of what's going on. But the צדיק that's operating in this world, he's constantly, constantly being monitored by שמים to see how he is holding the secrets that were placed within him. They're not, how do you say so her? I I can't even imagine what life is like, you know. I can't, I have no, I have no השגה in these things.
Maybe some of you do. I don't, I I know this meaning, I understand what I'm saying, the words that I'm saying right now, but I can't imagine what that's like. But when I see Rebbe Nachman saying, you want to see what it's like? You know what? I'm going to give it to you. And then from שמים they say, yeah? That's why we trusted you with the secrets that you have, that you know? So, we're going to stop here.
I have to run, but what I what I wanted to get to from this last story is that as we continue to learn about Rebbe Nachman, understand whatever he revealed was an iota of what what was actually happening in here, but it was whatever he did reveal was in constant, what's the right word? הסכמה, it was revealed at the right time. It was revealed and and the quantity of what he revealed was was was with הסכמה. And if in שמים they didn't agree for him to reveal what he was going to reveal, he didn't. He didn't.
So therefore we we stand in like this ענין of of the כח of the צדיקים. You know, I'm so happy Reb Eli Goldshmidt, he's, you know, he lives here in the neighborhood now for a few years. And he has a real, he has a real um a holy sensitivity to the קדושה of of צדיקים. He has this ענין.
I love when he speaks about this. He gave a חבורה שבועות night to the men and he spoke about it so beautifully. And he has קשר to different צדיקים and it's something that I I I bless us with not to like we we've come to this like generation of חוצפה even like people are saying if the צדיקים were really, really, really for real then they would just, you know, end everything, you know, they would just end all concealment and break through everything and fix the whole world.
We have no השגה with these things. And Rebbe Nachman, as much as you thought he was mysterious before you came to to this שיעור, he's infinitely more mysterious after hearing a story like this. But these experiences, these back and forths that he had with the צדיקים בארץ ישראל, the דאווענען and the prayers that he had on the קברים that he דאווען by when he was here, this paved the path for what becomes ברסלב. Because Rebbe Nachman is still known here as the Rebbe of, remember where we said last week?
Not, he didn't get to Breslov yet. He gets to Breslov in 1801 or 1802. He's not even in Breslov yet.
He's traveling around. Now, what's going to be גוואלד is that on his journey back from ארץ ישראל, he meets some incredible people and we have amazing documentations and I think that I believe next week we'll be up to it that we're going to go בעיון into the meeting that Rebbe Nachman had with the אלטער רבי, with רב שניאור זלמן מליאדי. That's what you think. Okay, it should be a.
