The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Tonight we are joined by Christopher Leopold, who in one of many guises musical goes under the name Human Barbie. Wednesday sees the artist out with a new EP called "no worries," and we discussed that and his favorite tunes with a premiere of the unreleased "empty" single, which drops with the rest of the EP Oct 12.

Show Notes

As broadcast October 7, 2022 with more hearts than anyone can handle.  Tonight we welcome Christopher Leopold aka Human Barbie aka veronicavon to the show to talk about his upcoming Human Barbie EP out Wednesday called no worries.  We got a sneaky spin of an unreleased tune to start part 4 for a very nice world premiere, and also got a chance to talk to the artist about the tunes that both inspire him and make him (kinda...not really) rage with jealousy.  Another great EP to drop this week from Poor Man Records, and it's Bandcamp Friday so go & support your favorites (Human Barbie & PM Records pages linked here)!

It is 20 hours past midnight and it is time to switch gears into October for our very first guest artist selector sesh of the month especially style-wise. Danno here grateful salutations to everyone getting with the program whether now or later on the streamers, on the mic so it is so it was and shall be but not forever ever ever between 8 & 10 on GFN from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Tonight we welcome Christopher Leopold to the studio for a song selection and exclusive interview. In one of his many musical guises, he’s known as Human Barbie, and is out with a new EP next Wednesday called “no worries” and we’ll get a world premiere of an unreleased cut starting in part 4 this evening. However, that’s all for later and right now it’s time for the history, thankfully still living this evening and wishing a very happy birthday to Thom Yorke to start the show, and we’ll talk about everything after Radiohead starts tonight’s breezies slow & low. THIS is The Drop.
Radiohead – All I Need
________
The Drop has begun things proper tonight on our guests & requests Friday sesh. Danno here, making things go but as mentioned earlier slow and low on the main, as we welcome a very special guest artist selector tonight to the studio for a world premiere.
Christopher Leopold is a very talented musician who typically goes by Human Barbie on the solo tip, and we have an exclusive interview and playlist selection coming up in hour 2 celebrating the artist’s new EP out next Wednesday called no worries, which drops courtesy of our favey faves over at Poor Man Records.
For right now though, we just opened with Radiohead off the In Rainbows LP and that tune was called All I Need. Not our typical opener, cuz we usually bring the heat on the bpm’s, but we’re feeling some morose maintenance tonight on the indie level for our guest artist selector coming up.
However, not sad news is today’s TIGHT (or) feature wishes a happy birthday to Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke. Ever a man of the people and one of the most forward-thinking artists out there, aside from being an absolutely killer record, In Rainbows is amazing due to being both self-released and sold online for whatever price the listener wanted to pay, which completely blew the minds of labels and music industry ghouls of the time.
Of course, priced or not, the album was a huge success and often cited as one of the band’s best albums ever even today, so that didn’t hurt the momentum of In Rainbows in the end either.
Happy birthday Thom Yorke, may there be many more trips around the sun.

So now that the monocle is off, it’s time to pay tribute to one of our favorite labels out there right now. Amber Bollinger and Alex Dezen, who are probably better known as Broken Baby in the rock world run a great label called Poor Man Records which is based in LA. Thus, we’ll play tunes in the next block and keep it strictly impoverished with tunes from the aforementioned Broken Baby then we got Young Winona and Tummyache to complete the triangle. THIS is The Drop on your Real Human Barbie no worries Friday night.
________________
Back on The Drop as we head towards the jump during quarter one of our nightly game of audio mirrors. Danno here, starting with a triumvirate of Poor Man bands right there, and we are joined in parts 3 & 4 tonight by Human Barbie, who’s out with a new EP called no worries next Wednesday via Poor Man Records. So, we just rocked a triad of Poor Man artists in that last block so let’s read out the names and crimes of the impoverished …
Broken Baby – Cloud Coverage (…this is the duo of Alex Dezen and Amber Bollinger, who honestly haven’t been on the show for too long a period of time, so I find myself crying more often than usual nowadays. This tune is off their Late Stage Optimism LP, released last year and of course, highly recommended.)
Young Winona – LA Waste (… the LA-based band lead by Cassie Gaffney, but fun fact all Kiwi natives who now live in America’s official hell and heaven jungle. This is another single released last year that honestly just captures Los Angeles to a tee.)
Tummyache – Emotional Housekeeping (…moving a tad forward on the timeline, this is the project of Soren Bryce whose new album SOAK dropped earlier this year. Not necessarily an artist that is signed to Poor Man, but definitely an artist that has worked with the label previously on a collab level, very talented musician and once again that’s Tummyache and the album is called SOAK.)
Okay, so Human Barbie got a bit excited with rocking a playlist tonight and we have a few leftovers or cut for time refugees to rock here in both parts 1 & 2 now that we’ve worshipped at the Poor Man obelisk. Up next we have Gardens & Villa with a tune called Underneath the Moon and then we have the closer from Gwenno called Kan Me, which fun fact is in the Cornish language from an album called Tresor released earlier this year, and that’s going to close the door on the first fourth of the show. This is The Drop paging Mr Barbie on your guest artist selector Friday night.
Gardens & Villa – Underneath the Moon
Gwenno – Kan Me

II
The Drop returns as we cold open the ice cold 2nd can in our nightly audio four pack. Danno here, ready to welcome Human Barbie to the show in parts 3 & 4 as our guest artist selector. Not to be twisted with the plastic monstrosity from Russia, this is one of the audio cloaks of Christopher Leopold, who’s based in LA. Human Barbie is out with a new EP next Wednesday called no worries, and we have an exclusive premiere of an unreleased tune from that mini album coming up in part 4, but let’s stay in the present presently…
Human Barbie – purple and red ( ….)
Human Barbie – wait ( …those are previously released and to start part 3 tonight, we have the title track to the EP, and then we have a world premiere to start part 4 as well, so do stay tuned and our interview with the artist is pretty hilarious stuff.)
Now before we continue with what we’re doing here….#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
So to move along the line here and further into part 2 tonight, we have more cut for time refugees, some Bulgarian independence and a shout out to last week’s guests. We’ll explain ourselves while we read out the damage report but for now THIS is The Drop on your Human Barbie like for real Friday night.
____________
Moving along towards the close of the first half and into the final verbosities we go for this first 57. Danno here, it was written in the script the footprint’s at the hospital, very excited to welcome Human Barbie that’s Mr Barbie to you, who’ll be on the phone taking over the playlist in hour 2 tonight. The artist’s latest EP is out next Wednesday called no worries, and that drops via our most favored maniacs at Poor Man Records. We just started with another cut for time refugee from the hour 2 selections right there, so let’s get to explaining ourselves on the audio affrontery...
SWANES – My Anxieties (…few tunes at least title-wise could capture the zeitgeist of the last few years like this one, and no surprises would be coming from this direction if this entire pandemic madness were referred to as this later on by historians. But we digress, this tune appeared on an album called Sticky Concrete which dropped last year, and if you wanna follow the band (note sp) that’s SWANES world on social media, which we just adore, like all the hearts.)
Bulgarian Cartrader – Camden Free Public Library (…interesting artist here from as you might have guessed Bulgaria. True name Daniel Stoyanov, this is the title track to an album dropped this year independently, and if you look at the followers and streams on the media services, Mssr. Stoyanov has done a great job getting a rather sizable following. We’ll have more from the artist in hour 2 on Human Barbie’s playlist coming up shortly.)
El Michels Affair feat Piya Malik – Cham Cham (…back to last week with this one, as one of our three guest artist selectors here features on a track from the Yeti Season LP, which dropped in March via Big Crown. Today sees the new project from Piya Malik along with co-vocalists Nya Gazelle Brown and Sabrina Mileo Cunningham called Say She She drop their debut album PRISM via Colemine’s Karma Chief imprint, so go and get it. Big up to all three of the sirens from the group, last week’s show was a hoot! But only one hoot, not two…wink wink nudge nudge paging Madame Malik.)
Now, let’s get to the jump and complete our preparation for Mr Barbie’s Leer Jet to touch down. Up next is our final pair of cut for time refugees from the Human Barbie selection coming up, and we have Hovvdy up next on a joint called True Love, and we’ll complete the circuit with another gem from LAUREL and our final cut to taste test is called Scream Drive Faster…which will take us into part 3 doing precisely that, fair listener. THIS is The Drop and that’s halftime, Mssr. Barbie.
Hovvdy – True Love
LAUREL – Scream Drive Faster

III & IV: Human Barbie
Human Barbie – no worries
Holy Hive – Brooklyn Ferry
veronicavon – Could’ve Tried
River Tiber – Hypnotized
Boy Scouts – That’s Life Honey
GOON – Fruiting Body

Human Barbie – empty
Mia Joy – Ye Old Man
Bulgarian Cartrader – Mavrud
Point Lobo – Falling in a Silo
veronicavon – Next Life
