Lighter Than You Started is a daily podcast offering gentle reflections on the news, the noise, and the small human moments that shape our days. With wry humour and quiet honesty, it’s not about fixing you, just about ending each day feeling a little lighter than when it began.
Hi I'm Keith and welcome to Lighter than You Started. It's Sunday and today I'd like to talk about something we all carry. Our stories. Not the stories we tell other people. The ones we tell ourselves.
Keith:The story about who we are. The story about what we've been through. The story about what happened years ago. The story about why certain things still matter. We all have them.
Keith:They're part of how we make sense of our lives. They help us understand where we've come from. They remind us of what we've overcome. They shape how we see ourselves and there's nothing wrong with that. But sometimes without even noticing we begin carrying the whole story everywhere we go.
Keith:Every chapter. Every disappointment, every regret, every success, every label we've ever given ourselves. As though every moment of our past must accompany every moment of our present. There's something understandable about that. The human mind likes continuity.
Keith:It likes believing that yesterday explains today and often it does but not always. Sometimes we give old chapters more influence than they need. We allow yesterday's disappointment to colour today's opportunity. We allow an old mistake to introduce itself before we do. We allow a version of ourselves from years ago to quietly whisper this is who you are!' But perhaps it isn't.
Keith:Perhaps it was simply who you were. Sunday often invites reflection. The week is drawing to a close. There's a little more space to think. And with that space can come old memories.
Keith:Old stories. Old identities. But perhaps today offers a gentle invitation not to forget your story not to deny it simply to recognise that you don't have to carry every chapter into every new day. Think about your favourite book. Every chapter matters but the story only moves forward because the pages keep turning.
Keith:Imagine if every new chapter insists on retelling everything that had happened before. The story would never move on. You'd get bored of reading it. Life is rather like that. The past deserves respect.
Keith:It deserves acknowledgment but it doesn't always need or deserve a centre stage. Sometimes today's page deserves to be written without every previous chapter competing for attention. You don't need to carry the whole story today. You don't need every old label. Every old fear.
Keith:Every old disappointment. Some chapters have already served their purpose. Some lessons have already been learned. Some versions of You have already done everything they needed to do. And now this version of you gets to write what comes next.
Keith:So today you find yourself revisiting an old chapter Perhaps gently ask yourself does this part of my story need carrying today? Or can I leave it safely where it belongs? As part of that journey that brought me here. Today's thought for you. You don't need to carry the whole story.
Keith:Thank you for sharing this moment on a Sunday with me and as always I hope you end today feeling lighter than you started. Go gently and I'll see you tomorrow on the flip side. Lighter Than You Started is a think of something publishing production.
