The 405 Coffee Break with O.K. Solberg

Jay & Joe's Motor Monday, the day we look at horsepower one Monday at a time. Today we go to Chevy and the General Motors line of business.

What is The 405 Coffee Break with O.K. Solberg?

Greetings and Welcome to The 405 Coffee Break with O.K. Solberg

New episodes tend to air over the local KMMR radio station @ 5 minutes past 4PM each M-F. And have been doing so, nearly every week since Sept 2018.

I'm D.J. Rasmussen, O.K.s friend since junior high, possibly your neighbor & this websites maintainer, whom strives to get each episode's show notes written, the transcript proofed and the audio posted to the internet within a few hours of that days KMMR air time. NOTE: recently been publishing most new releases by 4:30PM.

Thanks for visiting and I hope you enjoy the time we can spend together.

OK Solberg:

I wanna again welcome you to The 04:05 Coffee Break. Guys, new week, beautiful out there. After the 04:05 or sometime before dark, go out and take a walk. It's beautiful. Enjoy it. It's like spring. Now get you cup of coffee, glass iced tea, bottle of water. Let's see what's happening.

OK Solberg:

Spring wheat $5.48 a bushel, nothing to write home about. But a 550lb steer calf, I'm gonna bump it up to a 564lb steer calf in Billings last week. Hard evidence, $5 a pound right on the nose. That equates to $2,820, but who's counting good for you? A butcher hog in Iowa 62ยข a pound and a 100lb fat lamb in Billings at $2.58. But guys, there's more, much more.

OK Solberg:

So you know what I'm gonna say? It's Jay & Joe's Motor Monday, the day we look at horsepower one Monday at a time. Now two things you'll find hard to believe. First off, that I'm writing this episode on Thursday instead of Monday morning. That's the way it usually goes, but I found time and I love doing these. The second thing that is hard for me to believe at least is this.

OK Solberg:

Today is the 16 episode of Jay & Joe's Motor Monday. Yes sir. Number 16. It goes back every Monday since October 13 of last year. And like I've said, I like to claim this as an equal opportunity employer here, and I don't want to make it lopsided with too many Fords and not enough Chevys and forget and leave out Mopar completely.

OK Solberg:

So with that being said, because guys let's be honest all manufacturers make some good cars. All of the big three and then even others. Why I even highlighted the Volkswagen Beetle on one episode not too far back. So now I did my research on the 16 episodes and I'm happy with the results. I've had 6 episodes highlighting Chevy but more specifically General Motors.

OK Solberg:

I've done 5 dealing with Ford, and I've highlighted Chrysler Mopar 4 times. Not too shabby. Okay. But last week it was Hey Little Cobra which happened to be a Ford make. Right?

OK Solberg:

So today we go to Chevy and the General Motors line of business. And what do you think on last week's live episode, my man Jordan Rummel put in the song Hey Little Cobra right after and immediately after I said, don't be bitter. Perfect, Jordan. You the man. That tied in beautifully.

OK Solberg:

Now last week's Hey Little Cobra, a song about a car. Today, another song about a car. And today, it's the Stingray. GM fans, sit up and take notice. Now first off, understand this. Not all Corvettes are Stingrays, but every Stingray is a Corvette. Okay. Can you think what song is about a Stingray? I'll tell you, the Beach Boys sang it. Can you think?

OK Solberg:

And it's titled Shutdown and it was recorded in 1963. Okay. In the lyrics it says my fuel injected Stingray. Let's check things out. I love to do research. So not all Corvettes are Stingrays, but every Stingray is a Corvette. But did they have a fuel injection? Now before I answer that, the 1st Corvette was put on sale what year? You remember Joe, Jay, Marion? The 1st Corvette came out drum roll way back in 1953.

OK Solberg:

Yes sir, 10 years before this song was recorded. Okay, when did the 1st Stingray Corvette come out? Well guys actually the 1st Sting Ray and it was 2 words when it came out. The 1st one was from the sales year 1963. So the Sting Ray and the song came out the same year. Fantastic. The Beach Boys were really on top of things. Now listen to the start of the song.

OK Solberg:

It happened on the strip where the road is wide, two cool shorts standing side by side. Yeah. My fuel injected Sting Ray and a 413 are revving up our engine and it sounds real mean. Tack it up. Tack it up. Buddy gonna shut you down. Okay.

OK Solberg:

Your 1st question will be, was there a fuel injected Stingray in 1963? Oh, the answer is absolutely yes. In fact, GM started using fuel injection in the 1957 Corvette. Yes, sir. Rochester Ramjet mechanical fuel injection system on the Corvette's 283 cubic inch V8 engine.

OK Solberg:

So when they developed the Stingray, they were using something they had already been refining. Okay. The song says, Yeah, my fuel injected Stingray and a 413. So what's a 413? Huh? Well, we've heard about 411 gears you could really get lost. Commander Cody Hot Rod Lincoln.

OK Solberg:

411, 413 gears is that what it is? No. No. No. The 413 was the car, the Sting Ray was racing, and the 413 denoted a 413 powered super stock Dodge Dart.

OK Solberg:

Huh? Don't you just love it when you get 2 of the big 3 automakers in one episode? Now do you remember what a '63 or even a '62 Dodge Dart looked like? I didn't. I had to look it up, but when I saw it, let me tell you it was before the true muscle car look happened and the 1963 super stock Dodge Dart with a 413 looked like something Melvin Chose or Dale Driver could have driven.

OK Solberg:

Really? But with that engine, it was smoking. Super stock Dodge is winding out in low, but my fuel injected Stingray is really starting to go to get the traction I'm riding the clutch. My pressure plate's burning. That machine's too much.

OK Solberg:

Pedals to the floor. Here the dual quads drink, and now the 413's lead is starting to shrink. He's hot with ram induction, but it's understood I got a fuel injected engine sitting under my hood. Shut it off. Shut it off, buddy. Now I'll shut you down.

OK Solberg:

I hope you pull it up, listen to the song, and see if you understand why way back in 1974, I told my sister, doesn't that music just make you wanna drive fast? It sure does.

OK Solberg:

Deuteronomy 32:7 Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations, ask your father and he will show you, your elders and they will tell you.

OK Solberg:

So until next time, as you go out there, remember now, don't be bitter.
