[00:03:30 - 00:03:33] It is a significant step up in quality, I think, from Spider-Man 1.

[00:03:40 - 00:03:41] I think all the characters are super well written.
[00:03:42 - 00:03:47] I think it gets to the core of what Spider-Man is as a superhero and who he is as Peter Parker.
[00:03:48 - 00:03:51] With great power, great responsibility is like a huge part of the movie,
[00:03:52 - 00:03:54] which is a huge part of Spider-Man.
[00:03:54 - 00:03:55] It hammers that home perfectly.
[00:03:57 - 00:04:02] It's got, this might be a hot take, the best Spider-Man live action villain in the movie.
[00:04:03 - 00:04:04] We'll talk about that.
[00:04:04 - 00:04:08] But I think the dialogue's significantly better.
[00:04:08 - 00:04:10] It's aged great.

[00:04:10 - 00:04:11] Most of the CGI looks incredible.

[00:05:10 - 00:05:18] So my favorite part about this movie is in Spider-Man 1, we established,
[00:05:18 - 00:05:21] obviously with great power comes great responsibility, and that's like the theme
[00:05:21 - 00:05:22] of this character.
[00:05:22 - 00:05:24] And it's literally what we end with when he leaves MJ.
[00:05:24 - 00:05:25] Right.
[00:05:25 - 00:05:28] And then I think one of the greatest scenes in superhero cinema
[00:05:28 - 00:05:32] is him walking away from MJ, because that's what he's wanted his whole life.
[00:05:33 - 00:05:40] And he realizes that he shouldn't have it, because he could potentially hurt MJ.
[00:05:40 - 00:05:40] Yes.
[00:05:40 - 00:05:43] I'm like, that sums up this character so well.
[00:05:44 - 00:05:47] And then in this movie, we ask the question why?
[00:05:48 - 00:05:52] Why does with great power comes great responsibility matter?
[00:05:52 - 00:05:55] And should Peter choose it?
[00:05:55 - 00:05:57] And I'm like, that's so interesting.
[00:05:57 - 00:06:02] And that's such a great way to flush out your character,
[00:06:02 - 00:06:04] but also flush out like the themes of your whole trilogy.
[00:06:04 - 00:06:05] 100%.

[00:06:06 - 00:06:07] Whole trilogy.
[00:06:07 - 00:06:08] Whole duology.
[00:06:08 - 00:06:11] With a whole trilogy with an asterisk.

[00:06:18 - 00:06:22] I think, I mean, this is something I thought like off the bat,
[00:06:22 - 00:06:26] the first 10 minutes do an incredible job of not reintroducing Peter Parker,
[00:06:26 - 00:06:28] but like, here's where we're at.
[00:06:28 - 00:06:29] And here's what he's struggling with.
[00:06:29 - 00:06:29] Yeah.
[00:06:29 - 00:06:30] Boom.
[00:06:30 - 00:06:34] Like he is like burning the candle at both ends.
[00:06:34 - 00:06:36] And then also in the middle, like he's cooked.
[00:06:38 - 00:06:40] But like, I think it, it establishes like,
[00:06:41 - 00:06:44] it picks up where we left off from one super well as well.
[00:06:44 - 00:06:47] Like he is still in this tension mode with MJ.
[00:06:47 - 00:06:50] Like he made this decision, but he's like, this still really sucks.
[00:06:50 - 00:06:50] I know.
[00:06:50 - 00:06:52] I still really like this girl.
[00:06:52 - 00:06:52] Yeah.
[00:06:53 - 00:06:55] But I think like the setup for this movie is incredible.
[00:06:57 - 00:07:02] And then like, it, I mean, yeah, it ties in so well with one with all the stuff with Harry.
[00:07:03 - 00:07:08] But then once we get into the action and the tension with Doc Ock and, and all that stuff,
[00:07:08 - 00:07:12] like I think this movie just, it picks up the pace pretty quickly,
[00:07:12 - 00:07:15] but not in a way that feels abrupt or abrasive.
[00:07:16 - 00:07:16] I agree.
[00:07:16 - 00:07:23] I, and I think that auto is way more flushed out than normal.
[00:07:23 - 00:07:24] 100%.
[00:07:24 - 00:07:29] Even though I still like Norman as well, but I think Doc Ock is a better villain.
[00:07:29 - 00:07:34] I think Norman stands on William DeFell's performance way more than the writing.
[00:07:34 - 00:07:34] Yeah.
[00:07:34 - 00:07:35] Yes, I agree.
[00:07:35 - 00:07:38] As opposed to Otto who I think Alfred Molina is also great.
[00:07:38 - 00:07:39] Yes, he is.
[00:07:39 - 00:07:45] But he has a lot more character depth and you understand his motivation more,
[00:07:45 - 00:07:50] even if it is kind of surface level of like chip goes bad, therefore he is crazy.
[00:07:50 - 00:07:52] But he's still a sympathetic character.
[00:07:52 - 00:07:53] Still super sympathetic.
[00:07:53 - 00:07:58] Which I think really, I don't know, it goes a long way for this movie for sure.
[00:07:58 - 00:07:58] I agree.
[00:08:00 - 00:08:08] And I think I play the PS4, PS5, Spider-Man video game, which obviously he's a huge part
[00:08:08 - 00:08:13] of that game as well, different like character, but Doc Ock is a huge part of that game.
[00:08:13 - 00:08:18] And that game has more time and space to flesh out him as a character and their
[00:08:18 - 00:08:20] relationship like Peter and Otto.
[00:08:20 - 00:08:26] But like that, I think seeing him as a kind of a mentor-ish figure for Peter,
[00:08:26 - 00:08:29] even though we don't get it a lot in this movie, you still feel that.
[00:08:30 - 00:08:32] Because you know, I mean, Peter doesn't have a dad.
[00:08:33 - 00:08:37] He's kind of a little estranged with Aunt May throughout this movie.
[00:08:38 - 00:08:41] And then also like, yeah, Norman was a father figure.
[00:08:41 - 00:08:42] Norman's dead.
[00:08:42 - 00:08:43] Uncle Ben's dead.
[00:08:44 - 00:08:48] I think him as a kind of mentor-ish father figure, even if it's briefly in this movie,
[00:08:49 - 00:08:53] I think their relationship and dynamic is well-established enough for it to feel
[00:08:53 - 00:08:56] realistic within the universe.
[00:08:57 - 00:09:00] Thoughts on Harry's arc?
[00:09:00 - 00:09:01] I like it.
[00:09:01 - 00:09:02] Okay, do you really?
[00:09:02 - 00:09:02] I do.
[00:09:04 - 00:09:06] Is that like a weak part of the movie to you?
[00:09:06 - 00:09:07] No, I don't think it's weak.
[00:09:07 - 00:09:12] I think James Franco's arc in the whole trilogy is definitely weak.
[00:09:12 - 00:09:20] And I think, I don't know, I think three really kind of cooks him.
[00:09:20 - 00:09:21] Yeah, that's probably fair.
[00:09:23 - 00:09:24] Quite literally cooks him.
[00:09:24 - 00:09:25] Quite literally cooks him.
[00:09:25 - 00:09:30] But I think it's a super interesting tension to have Harry hate Spider-Man love Peter Parker.
[00:09:30 - 00:09:32] Well, I think it's set up well in one.
[00:09:32 - 00:09:32] Yeah.
[00:09:32 - 00:09:36] It's super well of, you know, Harry knows it's Spider-Man that is,
[00:09:37 - 00:09:39] which isn't really true.
[00:09:39 - 00:09:41] I'm still kind of mad at Peter for not saying like-
[00:09:42 - 00:09:43] I didn't actually kill him.
[00:09:43 - 00:09:46] All he had to do would be like, Ayo, this is not what happened.
[00:09:46 - 00:09:47] Yeah, anyway.
[00:09:47 - 00:09:53] But for Harry to know, oh, Spider-Man is the one responsible for my dad's death.
[00:09:54 - 00:09:55] But he doesn't know Peter Spider-Man.
[00:09:55 - 00:09:59] But he starts to kind of get this hunch maybe a little bit or like,
[00:09:59 - 00:10:02] he knows Peter's related to Spider-Man obviously, linked to him.
[00:10:02 - 00:10:07] So I think that being like just another thing on Peter's radar,
[00:10:07 - 00:10:13] like his relationship with MJ and then MJ's relationship with J. Joan and Jamison's son,
[00:10:13 - 00:10:15] which by the way, J. Joan and Jamison is hilarious.
[00:10:15 - 00:10:16] It's so good.
[00:10:16 - 00:10:17] He's so funny.
[00:10:18 - 00:10:20] J.K. Simmons is such a normal actor.
[00:10:20 - 00:10:22] He kills it in this movie.
[00:10:22 - 00:10:22] He's great.
[00:10:22 - 00:10:25] But then like for him to have all his work stuff,
[00:10:25 - 00:10:27] like he is like struggling at work, school,
[00:10:28 - 00:10:31] and then his relationship with Aunt May is kind of like spotty,
[00:10:31 - 00:10:32] especially in the middle of this movie.
[00:10:33 - 00:10:36] Like and then Doc Ock is on the loose.
[00:10:37 - 00:10:38] Like Peter's life is falling apart.
[00:10:38 - 00:10:42] And I think that's just like kind of a quintessential Spider-Man thing to me.
[00:10:42 - 00:10:45] Like he's like barely struggling or he's barely getting by.
[00:10:45 - 00:10:47] He's really struggling to get by.
[00:10:48 - 00:10:50] But then I kind of forgot this in the movie,
[00:10:50 - 00:10:52] that he like chooses to not be Spider-Man.
[00:10:52 - 00:10:53] Yeah.
[00:10:53 - 00:10:55] What did you think of that moment and like,
[00:10:56 - 00:11:00] I mean, you talked a lot about the impact of with great power comes great responsibility.
[00:11:00 - 00:11:02] But that really hit me hard in this,
[00:11:02 - 00:11:05] in this rewatch of how strong that part of the movie is to me.
[00:11:05 - 00:11:09] I mean, again, I think this is how you flush out a character.
[00:11:09 - 00:11:12] You, and it doesn't have to be like this formulaic,
[00:11:12 - 00:11:15] but I think with Spider-Man, this is the easiest way to do it,
[00:11:15 - 00:11:17] is you make his life super miserable.
[00:11:17 - 00:11:18] Yep.
[00:11:18 - 00:11:20] And you really put tension on,
[00:11:21 - 00:11:24] I mean like, I don't want to get into the other movies too much,
[00:11:24 - 00:11:29] but this is the reason or this is a reason why I have a lot of problems with other
[00:11:29 - 00:11:33] Spider-Man interpretations on the live action screen is because
[00:11:33 - 00:11:35] there's very little consequence for anything Peter does.
[00:11:35 - 00:11:39] It's like he's just a plucky, go lucky superhero and that's fine.
[00:11:40 - 00:11:43] Where I suppose this one, it's like he misses MJ show
[00:11:44 - 00:11:48] because he's stopping like the robbery or the car chase or whatever.
[00:11:48 - 00:11:52] And like, there is that instance 10 times in this movie of like,
[00:11:52 - 00:11:54] everyone hates him because he can't show up to anything
[00:11:54 - 00:11:57] because he is this anonymous superhero,
[00:11:57 - 00:11:59] putting everyone else's life above his own.
[00:11:59 - 00:12:02] But like he's making a sacrifice and all that like,
[00:12:02 - 00:12:04] which obviously is kind of what you're saying like,
[00:12:04 - 00:12:07] it's just he's so sacrificial and gets zero credit.
[00:12:07 - 00:12:08] Zero credit.
[00:12:08 - 00:12:10] And also a ton of people kind of hate Spider-Man too.
[00:12:10 - 00:12:11] Right.
[00:12:11 - 00:12:13] Because of J. Jonah Jameson, which he also works for.
[00:12:13 - 00:12:13] Right.
[00:12:13 - 00:12:16] So he's just like, I mean, that's like a small tension point in this movie
[00:12:16 - 00:12:20] where he's like, I don't want to give J. Jonah Jameson more of these photos
[00:12:20 - 00:12:22] because more people are going to hate Spider-Man,
[00:12:22 - 00:12:23] but I also need money.
[00:12:23 - 00:12:26] Like there's so many little tensions in this movie
[00:12:26 - 00:12:27] and they all work so well together.
[00:12:27 - 00:12:31] Like, the pacing is great again.
[00:12:31 - 00:12:32] Yeah, I think it's phenomenal.
[00:12:32 - 00:12:36] So then when he stops being Spider-Man and then it's like,
[00:12:37 - 00:12:40] and again, these movies are so cheesy.
[00:12:40 - 00:12:42] They are cheesy, but this one's less cheesy.
[00:12:42 - 00:12:43] I say that as a massive fan of them.
[00:12:43 - 00:12:45] Like you just kind of have to accept that.
[00:12:45 - 00:12:47] I think the montage of like,
[00:12:48 - 00:12:50] everything's happy in Peter's life is kind of cheesy.
[00:12:50 - 00:12:50] It is.
[00:12:50 - 00:12:52] He's like dancing through the streets.
[00:12:53 - 00:12:56] But yeah, I think like once you accept the level of cheesy though,
[00:12:56 - 00:12:57] it's still good.
[00:12:58 - 00:13:00] The dialogue is a lot better in this movie.
[00:13:00 - 00:13:01] Yeah, I agree.
[00:13:01 - 00:13:01] Again.
[00:13:03 - 00:13:07] But you have the moment where everything in Peter's life is great
[00:13:07 - 00:13:09] and then he has this super interesting conversation.
[00:13:09 - 00:13:13] Well, hey, he tells that man that he's the recent Uncle Ben's dad,
[00:13:13 - 00:13:15] which is a great moment.
[00:13:15 - 00:13:16] Yes, incredible moment.
[00:13:16 - 00:13:20] I think, I can't remember the actress's name.
[00:13:21 - 00:13:22] When she walks upstairs, I'm like,
[00:13:22 - 00:13:26] that is such a real thing of like,
[00:13:26 - 00:13:28] I don't know if it would be this big explosion of anger.
[00:13:29 - 00:13:30] But like she literally just gets up and leaves
[00:13:30 - 00:13:32] and like you just feel the weight of that moment.
[00:13:32 - 00:13:32] Yeah.
[00:13:32 - 00:13:33] Oh my gosh.
[00:13:33 - 00:13:34] But you also know he did the right thing.
[00:13:34 - 00:13:35] Right.
[00:13:35 - 00:13:37] And this is something he's needed to get off his shoulders for so long.
[00:13:38 - 00:13:38] It is.
[00:13:38 - 00:13:39] Yeah, it's a great moment.
[00:13:39 - 00:13:42] So when you have the conversation when Aunt May is moving
[00:13:42 - 00:13:44] and they basically have the conversation of like,
[00:13:44 - 00:13:45] why are heroes important?
[00:13:45 - 00:13:46] Why do we need heroes?
[00:13:46 - 00:13:47] Yeah.
[00:13:47 - 00:13:51] And then Peter understands that like,
[00:13:52 - 00:13:53] this is why I need to be a Spider-Man.
[00:13:53 - 00:13:53] Yeah.
[00:13:53 - 00:13:57] This is why like Spider-Man has value
[00:13:57 - 00:14:01] and it's it is okay to sacrifice my life
[00:14:01 - 00:14:03] for the greater good of other people.
[00:14:03 - 00:14:03] Yes.
