The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Tonight we open with a tribute to Roy Orbison, who passed away on this date in 1988, as did his wife Barbara in 2011! Then it's two hours of new tunes with The Popcast now helmed by Katherin Y. Bass, who makes a stellar like WLUW debut!

Show Notes

As broadcast December 6, 2021 with plenty of extra bop for your podcast bipping.  Tonight we note an interesting, almost freakish occurence with the passing of Roy Orbison on this date in 1988, as his wife Barbara passed away 23 years later TO THE DAY that she lost her husband.  After the opener it's new cuts for the duration with The Linda Lindas, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, and The National being big highlights in the first half.  But nothing can outshine the debut of our new contributor on our Popcast Monday 2nd hour, which is Katherin Y. Bass, who from tonight will be guiding us through all the new tunes out in the big time world of artists & labels.  Good tunes to be had from several indie & K-Pop darlings here in Korea like SE SO NEON, and new joints from JUICE WRLD, Troy Lanez, and SIA round out the international side.

It is 20 hours past midnight on another paradoxical sunny & wintry one here in our fair city of light as we begin a new chapter on The Drop, so it’s time to let the New Muses shine for our final regular Monday of programming for the year before we get to the best of’s and such for the next couple of weeks on our non-travel shows to wind up the calendar year. And this evening’s Monday is marked into the eternal sunshine of our spotless minds as December 6, 2021. This is Danno ready with the new goods from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Of course, with the music world winding down for the calendar year, the pickings are somewhat slim from this week’s Friday drop, but we got plenty to peruse even so, with new tunes out from The Linda Lindas, Phoebe Bridgers, and Charlotte Day Wilson being highlights, at least in our most humble opinion . For our Popcast 2nd hour, we embark on a new era starting tonight in our 2nd hour. Katherin Bass joins us as our new pop maven, and she’ll be our weekly guest moving forward with all the pop in tow for our weekly Monday feature. That being duly noted, we start everything for tonight with our TIGHT (or) feature to get the history in, and we note the passing of a very young Roy Orbison on this date, but also a strange thing that happened down the road 23 years later. Love conquers all, and THIS is The Drop.
Roy Orbison – I Drove All Night
The Drop has turned on the mic & the decks for our New Muses Monday weekly kickoff as we wind down our regular programming for the calendar year of 2021. Danno here, getting through all the new stuff for our first hour, and we kind of start a new era to kick off the show this month, as our new weekly contributor Katherin Bass will be joining us every Monday moving forward, and just like me she’s also got some radio experience from her Chicago days, so very excited to have her on the show it’s a perfect fit.
Now, as we usually do we just commenced things with our TIGHT (or) feature for this evening’s final New Muses Monday, and that was Roy Orbison with I Drove All Night. Unfortunately, it was on this date in 1988 that the Rock N Roll Hall of Famer and just general legend met his end at just 52 years of age. I remember when this happened my father was a huge fan, but it never really dawned on me until much later how young he still was at the time of his transformation.
Orbison had just experienced a career resurgence with The Travelling Wilburys, and had just wrapped his next solo album Mystery Girl. The album was released the next year in January 1989 to obviously huge posthumous acclaim.
However, it was far down the road from there in 2011 that Roy’s own pretty woman Barbara Orbison herself passed away on the exact same day. Obviously, just a coincidence, or is it? She must’ve been thinking of his passing on the day she did, and maybe her heart just couldn’t go on with out him.
No matter what you think, you gotta say that is true love right there. Roy & Barbara Orbison, rest in power.
So, now that we’ve done the monocle and scrolls of time thing for this week, let’s get to the new cuts and rock specifically this week with four punk quick hitters. Up next is The Linda Lindas followed by underscores, Cults, and Band of Horses…all of which we’ll discuss further after they scream right in our ears. THIS is The Drop on your new Muses Monday night.
__________
The Drop returns after our first trifecta for tonight’s programming funhouse. Danno here, doing the thing, making the ears ring while they sing from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju. Obviously, thanks go out to all of you getting with the program this evening. For those just joining us, we have a new guest in tow for tonight’s 2nd hour Popcast, and that is Katherin Bass. She’s gonna do the thing from tonight, and we’re very excited to have her running the show for our 2nd hour. As to what we just rang out, that was...
The Linda Lindas – Nino (…the third single of the year is out from the LA-based punk outfit with a feline-inspired animated video. This is going to appear on their debut album which we assume comes out next year via Epitaph, but nothing announced yet as far as dates & other details so hold tight on that one.)
underscores – Tongue in cheek* (…an album that is in fact already out is this band’s third LP. Underscores is the SF-based electronic project of Devon Karpf, which is also a member of the six impala music collective. The album is called bonyard aka fishmonger, available everywhere as of last Friday.)
Cults – Beach Ball (…for those that were really into new rock 10 years ago, this band’s self-titled debut is rather unforgettable. Well, to celebrate the reissue of the LP, the band put out this previously unreleased b-side that never made the final cut, and that just dropped Friday.)
Band of Horses – In Need of Repair (…the band announced a couple of months ago that they’d be out with a new album soon, and with this Floyd-inspired 2nd single to drop we have a few more details. The cheekily-titled Things Are Great drops in full after we hit new year in January, so keep an eye out for that.)
Now, let’s slow it and soul it up a touch to end off the first half. St. Paul & The Broken Bones are out with a new single as of last weekend called Love Letter From A Red Roof Inn, which heralds the ambitious The Alien Coast LP from the band, and that drops on January 28 via ATO. Finally, Hippo Campus is also out with a new cut this past weekend called Semi Pro, and that is going to be the final grapeshot for this first fourth tonight. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday evening.
St. Paul & The Broken Bones – Love Letter From A Red Roof Inn
Hippo Campus – Semi Pro
II
The Drop gets to the mic spit once again as our 2nd quarter commences. What’s snapping and or tapping this evening, Drop Gangsters (KOR)? Danno here on the mic, just doin’ my nightly thing from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju. Tonight is very special as we also welcome a new guest in Kat Bass, who’ll be joining us every Monday night from here, and of course that all starts once we hit the top of the clock again for our Popcast feature. So, let’s get to the recap of those first couple of long players, that was...
The National – Somebody Desperate (…The new musical film Cyrano features a score from the National’s Aaron and Bryce Dessner. For the end credits, they get the whole band together for a new song called “Somebody Desperate.” The brothers recently picked up 2022 Grammy nominations for Album of the Year for their work on Taylor Swift’s Evermore. )
Phoebe Bridgers – Day After Tomorrow (…last Wednesday saw the magic one in the skeleton outfit release a cover of this Tom Waits original. Proceeds from the track—featuring Rob Moose, Blake Mills, Marcus Mumford, and more—benefit the Local Integration & Family Empowerment Division of the International Institute of Los Angeles. Really, no wrong can be done by Phoebe Bridgers.)
Now as usual around this time of the show, just a real quick reminder to follow us on social media we are @gfnthedrop, which is also a great way to keep in contact with me & the staff here at Drop Central free & easy & world-wide. Via SMS just contact us if you’re local meaning here in the Republic of Korea, which can be done via #9870 (it’s 50 won for a regular message, 100 won for a longer one). Weeknight broadcasts are available for free download & subscription via our podcast as well once we go off the air, just search The Drop with Danno or The Drop on GFN and you should be able to find us on any service you use or via simple internet search.
Moving on right now, we have a few more new tunes to get in after those first coupla long players to begin part 2. Up next is Charlotte Day Wilson to be followed by Brahny and a band called Black Country, New Road…all of which we’ll explain side opposite the sonic splidaow. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday.
___________
Back on The Drop tonight as we move inevitably towards our first half tonight and Kat Bass’s debut on the Popcast, which all starts very soon. How’s it going, Drop Gangsters (KOR)? Danno here holding steady as always between 8 & 10pm here on GFN, we just got a few more new joints in for a closeup, so let’s go to the mirror on the wall…
Charlotte Day Wilson – Even Is The Lie (…the artist came out with her debut full-length back in June called ALPHA, and just last Wednesday released the deluxe version of the LP with this new tune in tow. Wilson is set to go on tour starting in March of next year, and tickets just went on sale last Friday.)
Brahny – Siamese (…this is the solo project of a guy named Brian Han, who is rather mysterious. What’s known is he lives in Toronto & sometimes collabs with fellow Tdot artist Monsune, but that’s about it. This one just dropped last Friday, do check his other stuff, it’s very good.)
Black Country, New Road – Concorde (…this band has been getting a lot of love with each new single they put out this year. This tune just dropped last week and is the third single to their ambitious debut album Ants From Up There, which releases on February 4 of next year so keep an eye out if you liked that. Black Country, New Road.)

Now heading towards the end of our first half tonight, we have a new remix of Rostam to close the first half. This is a Ben Bohmer remix of From The Back of a Cab, the original of which dropped in June on the Changephobia LP. Last Wednesday saw the artist drop parts 1 & 2 of the Changephobia remixes album, and this one is just oh so subtlely and tastefully done, so kudos to both Rostam & especially Ben Bohmer here. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday and we are at halftime..

The Gossip

Shawn Mendes - It'll be Okay
12.01
The "Señorita" stars Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello have dated the past 2 years until recently on November 17, broken up. Fortunately, it wasn't a painful one. Both parties found themselves to be busy again with their careers and respectfully ended things before anyone got hurt from future endeavors. Apparently, COVID-19 lockdown have helped them find their affection more deeply than ever. It seems COVID-19 has given the economy a hard time, but given time to many of us, letting us find themselves in the process.

Ye & André 3000 - Life of the Party
11.14
Kanye West, now legally called as Ye, is now seeing a 22 year old upcoming model, Vinetria. Just a month ago he was interviewed and had claimed how he still wanted to be with now estranged wife, Kim Kardashian. Speaking about Kim K, there has been a ruckus how she is currently seeing the American Comedian, Pete Davidson. It's not confirmed, but there's been many sitings.

New Releases

JUICE WRLD & Justin Bieber - Wandered to LA
12.03
As JUICE WRLD's second posthumous project, this single will be appearing in his upcoming fourth studio album, Fighting Demons. Collaborated with Justin Bieber, this song was originally previewed back in 2018, JUICE WRLD's verses describing his love for drugs, and Justin's being his work in handling his relationship with his wife. This single was announced a day before it's release, which would have been the previous artist's 23 birthday.

Hwa Sa - FOMO
11.24
A member of well known K-pop group Mamamoo, Hwa Sa has released her first Mini Album, Guilty Pleasure, after a year from her last full album, María. The song we just played, FOMO, is track 1 of said Guilty Pleasure. This song captures her interpretation how even through the fear there is still hope, and it is only her who can find it. The change of pace in the song gives me hype in the first half, full of hope! In the last half, I can feel a bit uneases of said hope that she has.

Chung Ha - Killing Me
11.29
Claimed as her first Special Single, Chung Ha has written this song during the outbreaking of the current pandemic. The song carries meaning with how life can be repeating and unmotivating, seeming to be a never ending tunnel. However, even through that long tunnel there will be light at the end to shine your way out.

5 Seconds of Summer - 2011
12.03
On “2011” 5 Seconds of Summer looks back at the beginning of their career after ten years together. The band announced the song via their socials on November 30 as a celebration for the group’s ten year anniversary. Despite the how upbeat the track is, the verses say otherwise. It seems the band had complications growing up with the found fame.

Troy Lanez - '87 Stingray
12.01
87 Stingray is the second single leading up to rapper Tory Lanez’s sixth studio album, Alone at Prom, an album expected to drop this December 10. The track’s theme rides the 80s Pop culture vibe with a dancey beat. The title of the song refers to the car line of the Chevorlet Corvette Stingray.

Part IV

GEMINI ft Seori - UFO
11.24
The Korean Artist Gemini has released his first album, Inside Out, this year. He talk about his thoughts within, the image he portrays, and how love can be easily lost. Its about how both his inside and out (see what I did there) find balance to make who he is. The track UFO is his title song; it is about how he falls in love at first sight, but hesitates and loses her, later chasing her out of regret.

Se So Neon - joke!
11.23
The Korean 3man band has come back with a new single. Their last was released earlier this year titled, Freedom. Right away, the band planned how to upstage their single with - joke!. They've decided to travel to Berlin and shoot their Music Video, conceptualizing themselves as clowns; giving them a fresh new look. The song tackles their thoughts on how people can be liars, but anything they say could be a joke or the truth.

Yelo - Red Card
11.25
Korean Solo artist Yelo released Red Card this past November. The song portrays how love is like an on going game that, in her case, is everlasting lose. She knows what will happen ahead, but continues anyway and begs to herself to be given a red card to end the game.

Oliver Helden & Anabel Englund - Deja Vu
12.03
It's about love! Once again we have a song begging for the need of affection of this certain emotion called LoVe. I personally don't really know much it, but it seems the artist does! Oliver Helden, the producer of this track, worked on Deja Vu since 2019. It was only 'til he finally chose Anabel to sing the vocals for this song. He never gave up on his peace and effortlessly poured love into until he was able to to share it with the world.

SIA - Fly Me to the Moon
12.02
In inspiration of Final Fantasy XIV (14), SIA has sang a new rendition of the Frank Sinatra classic, Fly Me to the Moon. I've looked into a bit for the promotion of Final Fantasy, and apparently even Ariana Grande and Katy Perry have performed songs for and appeared in Final Fantasy Brave Exvius.
