More Than We See

Why do some people leave such a deep mark on us?
Sometimes the answer seems obvious. They loved us, challenged us, hurt us, believed in us, or changed the direction of our lives.
And sometimes, it’s harder to explain.

In this episode of More Than We See, Natalie explores the people we somehow recognize before we really know them, the relationships that change us even when they don’t last, and the complicated spiritual language of soulmates, past lives, kismet, and soul connections.

Along the way, she shares three very different relationships from her own life - including someone she first met at seventeen and still seems to sense before she sees him - and asks a question that may be more useful than trying to figure out why someone came into our lives:
Who am I because I knew them?

A conversation about intuition, relationships, mystery, discernment, and the people who leave us different than they found us.

What is More Than We See?

More Than We See is a grounded, practical conversation about intuition as a human sense and capacity.

Hosted by Natalie of Immersive Spirit, this podcast blends lived experience, nervous-system–informed insight, and real-world tools to help people better understand how perception, sensitivity, and intuition are experienced—and how to work with them in everyday life across kids, teens, families, and adults.

Episodes explore the many ways intuitive awareness is felt and understood—from curiosity and excitement, to subtle noticing, to moments that challenge what we thought we knew. Along the way, conversations offer practical perspectives, simple tools, and steady ways of relating to intuition so it supports daily life rather than overwhelms it. This is a place to land for people who are curious, overwhelmed, skeptical, sensitive, living intuitively, or simply paying attention in a new way.

No hype. No dramatizing. Just clear conversation, lived insight, and practical ways of working with what we sense—alongside the quiet truth that there is more than we see, and that understanding it can make life feel steadier, clearer, and more alive.

Welcome to more than we see. I'm Natalie. Around here at Immersive Spirit we spend a lot of time with the things that don't always have neat answers. Some we can explain some we can't and some seem to live somewhere in between. Today I've been thinking a lot about people.
So specifically why do certain people change this And gets a rabbit hole I suppose. So explore this with me. Have you ever really thought about how many people have moved through your life. And I mean, like really thought about it. Like there are obvious ones our families…
Excuse me folks Got called our partners or our closest friends. But then there are teachers and co workers and neighbors and people we knew in school. Someone we even dated for a little while Like maybe one date to a few months. A friend that we haven't spoken to in twenty years. Maybe somebody we only met once Most of those people eventually become part of that background of our story.
But every once in a while there's someone who doesn't. And what's interesting is that it doesn't always seem to have much to do with how long we knew them…
Like sometimes somebody can be in your life for a real surveyly short amount of time and somehow…You are completely different because you knew them. So I've been wondering about that Like what is it about certain relationship that gets us so deeply. Some of it makes complete sense from a human perspective like, We affect each other We learn from each other. But then there are those things that are a little harder to explain…
Like people we feel like we know but we don't. Things we sense about someone before we consciously…actually understand them. And then there are relationship swear years later, you can look back and see just how much of your life…changed because of that person and because they were in it. I have all three of those in my own life so that's where I wanna go today. Before I get anywhere near the spiritual side of this, there's something pretty basic happening like people shape people We learn a lot about ourselves through other people.
Someone believes in you before you believe in yourself. And suddenly you start wondering…they might be right And I thank god for those relationships in my life. That helped push me helped me grow, or maybe you're around someone who makes it really easy to be yourself. And after a while you start noticing…the places where that hasn't been true in your life. And it can happen in the less comfortable ways too.
Sometimes what you learn from knowing someone is simply never wanna live like that again. That changes you too. I have quite a few of those because when you love out loud, you catch experiences. So there are very human reasons certain people leave a deep mark on us and then sometimes…
or something else we notice. You meet someone and immediately relax around them. Or if somebody seems perfectly nice…
Nothing is obviously wrong. But maybe something in you doesn't quite settle with somebody else They just feel off. Maybe you think about a friend five minutes later they call so the phone rings. Those kinds of experience interest me because we're constantly taking in information from other people. Some of it were consciously aware of and some of it…I'm not sure that we are.
I've definitely had moments where I've looked back later and thought, oh I knew. I didn't know what I knew but I knew And I couldn't have explained that at the time, but something in me noticed that. And I think relationships are one of the places where we can actually…
get to know our intuition better. And part of getting to know is is figuring out what we're actually noticing. Because I can have a feeling about somebody…
Okay. Where did that come from? Like I have my own history my own experience is my own fears and expectations…
I've learned things about people relationships along the way. All of that can influence what I'm feeling too. So if I feel anxious around some ready. I want to pay attention to that. But I also want to get curious about where it's coming from.
Like is something happening right now Is something old getting stirred up for me? Am I noticing the little things that I haven't consciously maybe put together yet? I may not know right away, and this is why trust your gut as always felt a little incomplete to me. Like of course I wanna trust my gut I wanna listen to my gut as well as all of my somatic inputs. But I also wanna know myself well enough to understand…what it might be telling me like a second dictionary.
And one of those questions I found really interesting…when I'm trying to sort through all of this is who do I become around this person not just how do I feel about them. Who am I when I'm with them? Am I pretty much myself or am I editing myself all of the time Do I feel curious and open? Do I walk way second guessing everything that I've just said. Or do I trust myself around them?
That tells me something too. And sometimes another person shows us something about ourselves. Like a mirror that I'm not sure we would have seen any other way. Some parts of ourselves only become visible in a relationship. And I really believe that And frankly, That alone is fascinating to me But this is more than we see So you know I'm gonna wonder a little further than that.
Because I've also had my own spirit experiences with people that I still can't quite explain. And one of them was when I was seventeen. So there was a person, and I met him when I was seventeen and I was…
absolutely certain that I knew him and I mean certain, except I didn't. I couldn't have. I was seventeen. We didn't live near each other. There weren't exactly decades of my life to search you through to figure out how I may have met this person I just didn't.
But I knew him or I felt like I knew him should probably say it in that way because I still can't tell you what that experience actually was. But I remember the feeling It wasn't really you look familiar It was a recognition. And here's the really strange part. I can still feel him. We aren't part of each other's everyday lives but if we end up in the same place, Like I can sense that he's there Like we're both of the King Supers and I'll know he's there before I see him.
I don't know how else to explain that I'm not even sure you lose around here anymore. It's almost like some part of me recognizes that he's nearby And even saying that out loud I know it sounds strange but it's true. And now I don't know if that's my soul recognizing his soul No I don't, but that's probably the closest language that I have for what it feels like. And because this has happened for so long, I can't really file it away as the weird thing I thought when I was seventeen because it's still here. So what do I do with that I don't know.
Maybe there's some perfectly ordinary explanation that I just haven't figured out yet. Maybe I'm picking up on something in wave. Then I don't yet consciously understand. And because of what I believe about consciousness and past lives Of course I wondered whether there's some kind of recognition happening that goes beyond this lifetime…
Yeah. I wonder about that I can't prove it. I'm not even particularly interested in trying to prove that I just know what the experience feels like And experiences like that are part of why I'm willing to leave a little room for mystery. I believe past lives are possible. I believe soul connections are I leave room for the idea that some people may cross our paths.
More than once. That doesn't mean I think every person that I have an intense reaction to…
must be somebody I've known before. Actually that's where I think this gets really interesting because…I've had people that changed my life profoundly, where I don't have that feeling at all. And one of those relationships change the direction of my life in ways I couldn't have possibly…seen while I was living through it…
So let's step back a little I was in a an abusive relationship when I was younger It was after the seventeen guy. And I didn't have a history of domestic violence Didn't grow up with that. This person was my one and only experience of it. And this is one of those places where I struggle a little with the spiritual language that we sometimes put around relationship because I can look back now and see this enormous line through my life that came after that relationship. It influenced what I eventually chose to study.
It influenced my interest in counseling and helping…other people. It changed the way fundamentally that I understood relationships. And during that larger period of my life witchcraft also became increasingly important part of who I was and how I made sense of my own life. So did knowing that person change me? God yes Absolutely.
But do I look back now and say, Uh he was sent to teach me a lesson in that mere five or six months that we dated. No I don't know that And I don't…
need to make what happened okay in order to recognize…
what I did with my life afterwards. Hey Quick pause before we keep going If you're listening to this show you're probably someone who thinks about this stuff even between episodes. You notice things You have questions maybe you don't always know who to ask. And maybe the people around you aren't quite in this conversation with you. That's what IS Town Square is for.
It's the community space inside of immersive spirit, where people like you grounded curious, come to connect. There are resources and tools, and just amazing people. With the four to five live events every month. And people who get it without having to explain yourself first. If that sounds like what you've been looking for, You can find us at w w w dot immersive dash spirit dot com.
And the link is in the show notes too Alright Let's get back to it. I think that that's a very important difference…Because sometimes when something painful happens we get far enough away from it that we can see all the things that grew afterwards. And I can appreciate those things I can appreciate the direction my life and I can appreciate the person I became. But I don't need to rewrite what happened…
in order to do that. Maybe that's part of why I'm careful about immediately assigning a spiritual purpose…to every intense relationship…because once somebody feels significant again It's really easy to start building a story around why they're significant. Maybe we were supposed to be Maybe there is some kind of soul agreement, contract. Maybe this person came into my life for a reason. I wonder about all of those things…
You know I do But sometimes I just don't know. What I can see is what happened because our paths crossed. And that's different. What did I do afterward? What did I discover about myself?
Did my life go somewhere? It may not have gotten otherwise…
Those questions are really interesting to me because I can actually explore them without having to decide…why the relationship…happened in the first place And then there were relationships that changed the direction of our lives in ways that are much easier to hold. Because my marriage is one of those for me. The way my ex husband and I met, really did have this sort of chismic quality to it. There are these little things that had to happen for our paths to cross at all like bad choices at all. And you know how sometimes you look backwards and realize as something that didn't seem enormous at the time was actually a pretty major turning point.
Meeting him is one of those things for me. Obviously we eventually got married and obviously we eventually got divorced. And we're still in each other's lives So the relationship just looks very different now. Than it did when we met. But here's the part that gets me when I really think about it our kids.
Those two particularly human beautiful things exist because we found each other That's kind of enormous because if our paths don't cross, When they do, my life as I know it doesn't exist And I don't mean, as therefore the universe orchestrated every single detail and this was all predetermined. Maybe it did Maybe it didn't. I really have no idea. I'm just looking backward at something that happened in my life and realizing how much came from that moment? We were important to each other We built a life together We had two beautiful young men…
kids, uh of course but eventually that marriage ended. And the relationship became something else. It doesn't make anything meaningless in anything I think it makes the idea of meant to be a lot more interesting. Because what does that actually mean? Does somebody have to remain in the same role in your life forever for that relationship to have mattered.
I don't think so friends. Some relationships…changed shape completely. And sometimes at what came from knowing each other, continues long after the original relationship is over. In my case that's pretty easy to see I can look at my kids and think wow. All of this because two people crossed paths And lots of you can do that.
But there's something kind of amazing about that. So when I think about the people who have changed me, I don't know that permanent…tells me very much about that. I am much more interested in what knowing each other actually changed. And that brings me back to something else because…There is one place that I think spiritual interpretation of relationships…
can get into significant trouble. Like, If I decide someone is my soulmate, or we have a sole contract or I'm absolutely certain I knew them in another lifetime. That story can become really powerful. And I say that as somebody who genuinely believes that those things are possible and true. I can sit here and tell you that I still know.
When someone I met seventeen years, a guy or when I was seventeen years as king supers I can tell him what he's there. Clearly I'm willing to entertain possibilities, but I still have to deal with the person who's standing in front…
How do they treat me? Who am I when I'm around them? What is actually happening between us? Because somebody can feel incredibly familiar to me and still not be someone I want close to me. I can believe I've known somebody before and still decide I don't wanna know them now.
And that matters. Whenever I believe about where a connection came from doesn't tell me what I should do with it today. That's where discernment really comes in for me. I can wonder about something I can pay attention to what I sense. I can have the experience.
I genuinely cannot explain. And then I still have my life. The relationship the person, the me as I am now. That's what I have to work with And I think that's probably why I'm comfortable letting some of that mystery…remain a mystery. I don't need to solve the seventeen year old story in order for it to be interesting to me.
I don't need to decide that there was some spiritual reason for the abusive relationship in order to see how my life changed afterward. And I don't have to decide whether Kismet brought my ex husband and me together to understand how family, meeting him changed my life with the two miracles that the doctor said would never happen. They followed. I can wonder about all of it and I do. But maybe the thing I know is what happened to me It's because those people were there.
And I'm guessing at this point someone has come to your mind. For you by now. Maybe you knew exactly who it was five minutes into this conversation. Maybe…
Somebody surprised you when they came up Maybe it's someone you love or you still talk to every day Or maybe it's somebody…that you haven't thought about in years. There might even be somebody you're thinking oh, I absolutely am not giving that person credit for who I am today. Fair enough. But thinking about what changed because you knew them, not because everything they did was good, not because the relation had to last not because it was even a great relationship. Just what changed?
Did you discover something about yourself? Did your life go in a direction that you never expected? Was there something about that person you sensed long before you fully understood it. Do you still wonder why the connection felt the way it did And maybe like me, You have different answers from different people all across your…
That's what I find so interesting I can look at one person and think, I still have no idea what that was. I can look at someone else and know exactly…
what that relationship changed. Even if I don't know why it happened. And I can look at my marriage and see enormous branch of my life that exists because two people happened to cross paths…
Maybe that's why the question I've kept coming back to isn't…Why did this person come into my life It's more about…Who am I because I knew them And that one gets me because when I ask a that way people start appearing all over my life. Someone believed in me Somebody hurt me Someone introduced me to something I still love. Someone made me question myself. Someone made me more myself someone crossed my path at exactly…
the right or maybe completely accidental moment And everything after that went just a little bit differently. And I'm sure there are people…whose influence I haven't even recognized yet. That's kind of incredible when you think about it. We move through each other's lives. Sometimes for decades sometimes for five minutes.
And every once in a while somebody leaves us different than they found us. I can explain some of that. Some of it I can sense more than I can explain And some of it I still wonder about. And I'm okay with that. So think about the person who came to mind while you were listening Maybe even think about a few of them And just ask who am I because I knew them?
And see where that takes you. Explore that one for yourself. And friend don't go backwards whether it's over can be over and cherished For what it was. And until next time keep noticing what might be more than we see. I'll see you next time
