And here’s today’s news from Rail Technology Magazine in association with TransCity Rail – on Friday the 19th July 2024.

The construction of HS2’s Northolt Tunnel has reached a significant milestone, with 50% of the dig now complete.
The 8.4-mile twin-bore tunnel, which passes underneath London, is now half-dug, as four tunnel boring machines (TBMs) continue to excavate a total of 16.8 miles.
Between them, the four machines have now travelled over 8.4 miles, equivalent to one of the two tunnels that needs to be dug. This amounts to almost two million tonnes of earth which have already been excavated.
All four machines are progressing at a rate of 16 metres a day, with the first TBM expected to complete her dig later this year. As the TBMs progress, other vital features including cross passages, vent shafts and headhouses are also put in place.
The completed tunnel will carry HS2 services between super-hub station Old Oak Common and the outskirts of London at West Ruislip.

A £10 million transformation of the Severn Tunnel has been completed following 16 days of round-the-clock work.
The track renewal in the 138-year-old tunnel was the largest in living memory, with the entire 7km (4.3 miles) of track in the Wales-bound direction being replaced.
During the 16-day renewal project, engineers installed almost 11,000 sleepers, more than 22,000 tonnes of new ballast, and 16 rails, each 216 metres in length. The team also removed 21,000 tonnes of spoil.
The completion of this work also means that the entire track within the Severn Tunnel has been renewed in the last two years.
