episode of the fifth season, which means

we are at the, as they say, penultimate.

The penultimate.

Penultimate.

Usually- How do you feel
about this one overall?

I mean, good.

I thought it was a solid, solid episode.

You know, we got some of, we got some
of the staples of The Good Wife, which,

uh, interestingly enough, uh, recently
has been, uh, Alicia's kinda racist.

Um, so you know, we got, we got, we
got that rearing its ugly head again.

Which, um, now knowing, like, the
lore of Julianna Margulies is-

Ugh … just even more funnier to me.

Makes sense.

Like, I just cannot… Every single
time it comes up, yes, that was fun.

I think this also had, like,
a lot of moving pieces, and

it's a very dense episode.

So what do you say?

Should we ju- jump right in?

Let's do it.

All right.

So we see the start of this episode.

There is a meeting at the Paisley Group.

Remember the Paisley Group?

Remember how they showed up and I
was like, "Hey, that Tom Skerritt

guy is here. He's go- Mm-hmm … he's
gonna be important. He's gotta-" Yep.

"That you don't just cast Tom
Skerr- or Tom Skerritt for nothing."

Yeah, it wasn't a throwaway.

And- It was like, it- it- it came back.

'Cause I think I remembered, 'cause I,
I said, "Okay, we've seen him before

for sure." I couldn't remember where.

And it was in that episode where they
were, you know, it was fresh, fresh

off of the, the split from LG and FA.

Yeah.

And, uh, Cary tries to, uh, really give
a good one to LG by faking, uh, faking

him out and saying that the, the Paisley,
this Paisley guy had some sort of scandal

with some sort of, uh, sex worker, and
got got Kalinda and Will to talk to

Paisley about his issue with a, with a
sex worker that turned out to be the man's

granddaughter, I believe is what it was.

Yes.

Uh, so that, that was a small little
moment from Paisley, and now we're

getting a whole episode featuring Paisley.

Uh, thankfully, great.

Not really.

Kinda sucks.

I mean, I, I think, I think, like,
for this role they did need someone

that was a little established.

I mean, again, Tom Skerritt will
always be picket fences man to me.

Um, but he also was in, you know,
some blockbuster movies as well.

Yep, Alien, Top Gun.

He was really, really a '80s guy.

Um, so you know, he's, he's here.

You know, whenever you need a, a
ordinary older white guy, Tom Skerritt.

He's pretty cool.

So there's this meeting going on, or y-
we see the preparations of this meeting.

We also see the preparation of a pie
being made, and I was like, "Where are

we going with this?" But the meeting
is about a merger for the Paisley

Group, and there is a protest outside.

Like, Mr. Paisley is saying, "Oh my
gosh, we're so great. We're so green.

Like, we, we are so, you know, good to
the environment," all of this stuff.

Um, but in the background you can hear
there's a protest going on, and I was

like, "Oh, we are definitely in, like,
Occupy Wall Street- Yeah … territory

happening here." Um, and- There
are questions at the end of Mr.

Paisley's presentation, and one was,
"How many people do you think you're

gonna lose, uh, due to this merger?"

And he said, "Regrettably, 20%
of our workforce stateside." And

I was like, oh, okay, so things
really sure have not changed.

They've just accelerated since then.

Yeah, I mean, Paisley's doing his, the,
you know, the, the company thing of just

like, "Oh, hey, yeah, this is all gonna be
great. This is gonna be fantastic for, for

our bottom line, for our shareholders."

Yeah.

Sound investment.

"We're all gonna get paid, we're
all gonna get paid so much more.

And so yeah, that's, that's, that's it.

That's the end of the news thing
with this merger." So I was like,

"I, I, actually, I don't think it is.

Like, I feel like there's a,
there's more, there's more stuff

here." He's like, "Oh- Yeah

oh, oh, that.

Like, yeah, yes.

We're gonna have to, like, make a bunch
of people lose their jobs." But like-

Well, he's like, "You wanna make money,
right?" Like- Yeah … "You wanna make

money." "It's not gonna affect you.

Like, why do you care?

And it's not gonna affect
anyone in this room.

It's only gonna be good for
the people in this room.

The thou- the thousands and thousands of
people in our workforce, they're gonna

suffer, but who really cares about that?

What re- what, what matters?" Like,
he's like, well, she, well, you know,

the woman brings up, he's like, "You
sign those protesters out there that

actually want me to tell you the
truth about what's happening here."

Like- Right … yeah.

It's like, he's surprised someone in
this room is just like, is actually

cares about the, uh, layoffs.

He's like, "Oh, you peasant person."
Uh, the next question is about

the wrongful termination of their
CFO, to which Mr. Paisley kind of

bows out of answering any of these
questions and tosses it to Alicia.

Um, how- however, I think it's important
to note that they are standing next to

each other at the s- at the front- Mm-hmm
… of the boardroom at this moment.

Yeah.

Um, Alicia speaks about the terminations
like he was not fired because he was gay.

He was, and it was like, of course he was.

Um, but he was fired because
he was, um, trading secrets,

so he was fired for cause.

And while this is happening, one of the,
like, caterer people takes a pie and pies

Mr. Paisley in the face, and this pie,
part of the pie gets on Alicia's shoulder

Never great when the… You know what?

Not gonna do it.

Never mind.

Never mind.

Um- Good job.

Good job Yeah.

Never… Yeah, I know where
you're going now- Yeah

but no, no, we're not gonna do that.

Not gonna do that.

But we are gonna say, uh, that Mr.
Paisley's like, "I told you this was

gonna be fun." Like, like, "This is
our life." Next we see Lewis Canning

at Flor Agos, and he of course, just
like every other person that walks into

this building, is like, "Oh my gosh,
this is what a startup looks like?"

Like, "Whoa. What, what is happening?"
Uh, turns out he is representing

the CFO here in this case, and
so he is sta- stopping by to kind

of see what, what's on the table.

They offer 150,000.

Alicia and Lewis have this like
back and forth where Lewis is like,

"Oh, you have changed." And Alicia's
like, "Yeah, I have." Well, 'cause,

'cause Alicia starts playing hardball
with him, 'cause she's like…

'Cause he w- he's like, "I,
we want…" Uh, what'd he say?

He wanted some outrageous number of
like, you know, two million or something.

Alicia's like, "We're
gonna give you 150." Yeah.

And like, and he starts pushing back.

He's like, he's like, "Uh,
200,000." She's like, "140 now.

Okay?

Like you, you wanna keep going,
I'll keep lowering the number."

And he's like, "Oh, Alicia,
you've really, you've really…

" You know, I should do it.

"Yeah, Alicia, you've really changed."
He's like- A- again, like these people

love to pull- love to say, "You've
changed." Like, has she though?

Like, does she feel that- Well, and it's
like, like to remind us as the viewers

that there has been an event in which
she has, like had to change, that we

have not seen the changing happening- Yes

all of these places.

Like just FYI, Will is dead.

Like, just remember.

Yeah.

Like, Will is dead.

Will is dead.

Will's dead, and that
made me more cutthroat.

Like, okay.

Sure.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Okay.

So also, like it's a very
busy, busy time at Floricagos.

Basically, A- Alicia dismisses Louis,
and then Finn also walks in, and he's

like, "Hey, uh, I'm here because of Eli."

And Eli is like… Again, Eli is like
so high on campaign life, like, and he's

so… He's like, "This is great news.

I've got good news, I've got great news.

Here's the situation.

We finally got the report about the
Jeffrey Grant thing." And then he,

he's like, "Alicia, if you don't wanna
look at it, it's okay- … because

like, it's Jeffrey Grant."

And it turns out- Alicia's
like, "I…" Alicia's like, "I

don't know if you've heard, Eli.

I've changed." "I've changed." "Okay?

I'm, I'm good to see this.

I'm fine seeing this.

I've changed, okay?

Something about me has changed.

Something's happened to make me change.

I'm okay with seeing death reports
about my lover at one point in time."

I could not really focus on anything
else because Alan Cumming has

like a fresh- Yes … a dye job.

Sure does.

And I'm just like, "Wow," like
the- Eli and his new hair.

Yeah.

I was like, they just like p-
they just like broke out a i- ink

cartridge, just broke it open,
just poured it on this man's head.

I was… It almost does look
like shoe polish in a way.

Yeah.

I was like… It was like really bad.

Like it was like a really bad dye job.

I couldn't focus.

I c- I couldn't focus on any Eli scenes.

I was like, he just looks so different.

And then when he gets in the room
with Peter, I'm like, "Oh my g- like

both of y'all." Like, what are you two

Good news for Finn in the report
though is that he is found of having

no responsibility in the situation.

Castro's the one, um, on the h- hook here.

But Eli is like, "Hey, listen,
Castro's gonna try to do something

and when he does bring it to me.

He's gonna try to bring a photo
of something, of whatever.

Like, bring it to me.

And I have to say, this is the
first comment we hear over the next

two episodes everyone, spoilers.

Two episodes.

Yeah.

About walls.

Eli is like, "We need more walls.
Like, you need more walls here because

there's just so much going on." Which
I thought it was funny and I wanted

to, to track because no one shuts
up about the walls going forward.

Back at

Lewis, or back at … I was
gonna say Lewis Gardner.

Oh my goodness gracious.

Oh, man.

Uh, Lockhart Gardner.

You're in Snewville.

Oh my goodness.

Uh, back at LG, Lewis
meets Harold in the hall.

Okay.

So he's like- You mean Howard.

Howard.

I do mean Howard.

Oh my gosh, I've done this 800 times.

Okay.

Meets Howard in the hall for a chat, and
he's like, "Hey, what's up with the fact

that Diane has a bunch of women here?"

And Howard is, like, very
concerned on what to call Lewis

Canning in terms of his condition.

He's like, "What do I call you?

Disabled?

Differently abled?

Challenged." Oh my God.

Challenged.

That's the one, right?

So, so what do I, what do I call you?

Well, who, what are you?

Like … And I mean, only, only
the w- uh, only the way Howard

Lyman could, could do this.

Just like, "Oh my God." It's, it's
almost like when Marissa gets on

like before we start to record.

Oh my God, Jason.

Like that's what I, that's what I
like in you two in the pre-p- in the

pre-recording- I just- … phase of this.

I mean, you play it off
so well during the show.

I'm so sorry.

But you know, you're very Howard Lymany,
uh, before we, before the mics heat up.

You know what I mean?

Would just like to state, for the
record, that if anyone takes any of

the burden of the podcast, it is me.

Hmm.

It is- Really?

Because I get beat up on at the sake of
entertainment Yeah, well, I'm just trying,

I'm, I'm just trying to speak truth to-
Okay … to the, to the folks out there.

I, it, you know, it, it, it doesn't feel
great for me for you to constantly come

in here and refute what I say, you know?

I mean, I guess- Ugh … attitude's
your way to get blind, but whatever.

Whatever.

Okay.

So Louis Canning sees this- Marisa,
Marisa Wyman … Oh, all these people.

There's all these people, all these women
in a room, and, uh, Louis is like, "I

can't have that. Let me butt in." And we
see that also in this room is none other,

other than Raina Hecht, bringing her back
from the episode in New York where she

was shopping around for a new, um, place
to work, and ended up forming a law firm

with none other than Elsbeth Tascioni.

Yeah.

Uh, but apparently she has brought
this class action suit to Lockhart

Gardner for Diane to, to kind of
co-chair at this point against the

pharmaceutical company, Kale Pepper.

Mm-hmm.

Uh, which I was like, oh, Louis
isn't gonna, gonna like this 'cause

he's all up in the butts of the,
the, uh, pharmaceutical companies.

Uh, and Louis of course sees this,
hears this, leaves, and Diane is

like, "Hey, Kalinda, uh, go figure
out what's going on with that." Yeah,

he takes quite an interest in it.

He's like, "Oh, what's going on here?

Oh, pharmaceutical you say.

Okay, interesting." And like,
you know Diane's like, "Uh, okay.

I don't know what's,
what's going on there."

And so she calls her, her new, uh,
s- Kalinda, I, I hate the fact that

Kalinda has been this- Yeah … like,
kind of relegated to Diane's psychic.

I'm like, Kalinda, get over here.

She's like, "Yeah, boss.

What do you need, boss?

What can I do for you, boss?

What's up?" It's like such- "What, what
do you need me to spy on now, boss?

What's up?" It's such a weird role because
you'll, uh, through this episode she,

like, and also how Diane sees Kalinda and
like, as a confidant, and also like, later

in the episode she mentions her as like a
girl Friday and like, all of these things.

Mm-hmm.

And it's just like, this is Kalinda.

Like, I don't know who you're
talking about, but this is- Yeah

Kalinda.

So- Yeah, she's like Diane's- Yeah
… personal, like, personal fixer now.

Yeah.

She's- Not as dynamic as Kalinda has
a- has been in the past, you know?

Yeah.

Meanwhile, Mr. Paisley is prepping
for an interview on television, and

Alicia is like, "Okay, like, I think
we could settle for $140,000." And

he's like, "That's a lot of money."

And she's like, "You're
richer than rich." Mm-hmm.

"This is not a lot of money
for you." Um- I, I- He agrees.

I- he's like, "Okay, fine. Let's, let's
pay. I gotta get on the air." I re-

and you can kind of see throughout this
episode, like, Alicia's, like, charm and

how Alicia gets people to do what- Yes
… she's like, she's very, I mean, listen.

And she is a I think a lot of
her power comes from the fact

that she is a white woman.

Yes.

And a lot of people that she deals
with, uh, you know, are, uh, attracted

to the charms of someone like Alicia.

But I think she, she handles these people
and she uses her, her asset, which is like

who she is, in the correct way by kind
of like speaking to them in this way of

like, "Oh, you know, I'm like your mommy.

You loved your mommy, and I
speak to you like your mommy.

Uh, so you're going to do what I say
because I speak to you in this nice,

pleasant tone, uh, Mr. Paisley, and
you're gonna s- you're gonna, you

know, pay this $140,000 and it's
gonna be great, and everything's gonna

be, gonna be just hunky-dory." Yeah.

Like, and it…

You can see how it really works for her.

It… And to your point,
with the right people.

Mm-hmm, yeah.

Like, it, it has to be a good match.

Um- And, and I think, I think Paisley
is, is more… And he's more principled,

like, 'cause it's not about the $140,000.

It's about he doesn't wanna lose.

He doesn't wanna- Oh,
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

He doesn't wanna be seen paying someone
he thinks is a, is a cheat, you know?

Is, is- Yeah.

And I'm, I'm sure, like, I'm sure in
his mind he definitely didn't fire this

man for being gay, but I'm sure that,
you know, in the, in their day-to-day

dealings he made s- more snide little
comments about this man being gay.

Um, so I think both is probably true.

He… The, the CFO probably was
selling secrets, and he was probably

was getting a little bit harassed for
being gay in the, in that workplace.

Both things can be true at the same time.

What's also true is that he is
going to be interviewed by a

nam- a man named Steven Lewis.

Just putting that in everyone's,
uh- Yeah … mind at the moment.

So Kalinda interrupts Canning, who is
watching this television show, like

watching, waiting to see this interview.

Um, and Kalinda interrupts him and
is l- and wants to know about the Ca-

the Kale Pepper class action su- suit.

Doing Diane's kind of work here, and she's
like, "Listen, this isn't gonna work if

we're not like upfront with each other."

'Cause remember last time Lewis was
like, "You can't be working for Diane,"

like- I need something in this too.

It's just like, "I'm telling you this,
you're gonna tell me that… What's

going on." And we find out that,
of course Canning is in the process

of signing Kyle, Kale, Kale Pepper?

Kale Pepper.

Kale.

Pepper Labs.

Um, and he's like, "We gotta figure
out a way to represent both the

pharmaceutical company and the
people they harm, apparently. We

gotta figure this out." Well, well
I, I think my f- like, the, Canning

knows they have to dump one of them.

Yes.

Like, they can't, they can't
represent both the class action and

the cl- the cli- the, the labs that
the class action's going against.

So like, you know, hey, it's basically
now set up as Canning v. Diane.

Who's gonna get their way?

Right.

Like, that's the gotta figure it out part.

So back to the interview.

Uh, Ca- Mr. Paisley is being
interviewed about the pie incident.

He's like, "It wasn't a
very good pie overall.

And yes, we are, you know, sending
jobs overseas, but also like,

what do these protesters want?

Like, seriously, what do they want?"
Honestly, this is what Mr. Paisley said.

I just wanna put this in the ether
that Mr. Paisley- Diane … a

fictional character said this.

Uh- Right.

You're, you're having
trouble saying it, though.

It sounds pretty smooth coming out
of your m- like re- reminiscence

coming out of your mouth.

He mentions a man named Tom Perkins,
who really did, who really did in real

life, he's a venture capitalist who
really did write a letter comparing

the fact that the persecution against
the bridge people is similar to

Anne Frank hiding in Nazi Germany.

Oof.

This is a real event that
happened in 2014, and Mr.

Perkins here is, um Agreeing with him
on national TV, which is hilarious

because both Alicia and Canning
are watching Yeah At the same time.

And like, Canning's like, "Yes!

Go for it.

Dig in even more." And
Alicia's like, "No." Yeah.

Uh, you know, Paisley's like, "Yeah,
the, the 1% is the new hunted minority."

It's like, oh bro, like how, how out
of touch can you be, uh, just in, in

your rhetoric and this, this Marissa
Garza like speak- Oh Jason Read

that he, that he's saying.

Uh- I'm just gonna say Jason
Read like 800 gazillion times.

Jason Read, Jason Read.

I do recall Marissa saying that-
Jason Read … Tom Perkins was a- Said

that- … was a personal hero of hers.

Oh my God.

That's all I recall.

I don't remember.

Okay.

Hey, either way- Ooh … but
I, and I love the fact- Do you

see how he treats me, everyone?

Do you see this?

Do you see this treatment?

I just wanna say.

I don't know.

I'm just trying to speak truth.

Um, but, and yeah, like you say,
uh, Louis and Alicia are like, they

both know that what this is gonna do
to their case because we are, like

Alicia's right on the cusp of getting
a settlement here before we- Yes.

Well, he agreed.

Like, uh- Yeah … Mr. Perkins
agreed before- Right before … he

went on the air Right before.

But she hadn't like done anything-
Yeah … with, with it yet, but

he- 'Cause she thinks she is too.

She's like, "I got…" I mean, he's
just gonna do a little interview.

Yeah.

What, what does it matter?

Yeah.

I'm gonna, I'm great.

Call Louis Canning.

We're gonna settle this thing.

We heard Louis, um, before say like,
telling, talking to his client like,

"Yeah, I think we should take it.
We don't want this to go to court."

It's like everything was about to
be great, and then this is just

gets, this bomb gets dropped of this
terrible news, uh, this news interview

because Louis knows I can use this.

I can use this- Oh, for sure … in court-
And he is- … to be, to get what I need.

He is so excited because he is still in
his office with Kalinda watching this

happen on his computer, and his phone
rings, and he knows it's Alicia, and he's

like, "Make her wait. We're gonna make
her wait. We're just gonna make her wait."

Kalinda's like, "Screw that. I'm gonna
pick up the phone." And then also,

this was the freaking weirdest part.

So like of course it would be weird that

the, seeing how Canning is kind of as-

attacking this in, in court, Alicia goes
to talk to Paisley about apologizing.

plan that vacation with Alicia."

So they're doing all this.

like, kind of taking it in.

and is like, "What's going on with

you and Peter?" And Alicia's being
just as elusive and evasive as Peter.

She's like, "What?

Why, did Peter say something?" And
Eli's like, "No." And she's like, "Well,

why do you care?" And Eli's like, "I
care for selfish reasons." Probably.

Like, I want Peter to stay in office.

Alicia shoots him a look.

Using the same strategy that Canning

was using, but for his own benefit.

which in Chicago talk, like, uh, Skokie

is a very affluent, also known to be pre-
predominantly Jewish area of Chicago land.

and basically she says, like,

And Carrie gets a phone call to confirm

meeting with Rena Hecht?" And Carrie's

like, "We're not doing this anymore.

We're not doing this."

You might not know it or
realize it, but yes you are.

Turns out that Rena Hecht kind of
just, like, disappears at this point.

She doesn't show up for the

like, is she still in play?

And Diane recognizes that this is, like,
a blow to her momentum in this situation.

But the thing, the thing I'm
learning about Rena Hecht

is Rena Hecht kind of sucks.

like, you know, in the, in the episode

we got earlier this season where it's
just, like, everyone's fighting to

get some time with her, she was very,
like, sh- kind of crappy, like, just

canceling meetings on people at the last
minute and, like, you know, not giving

people straight answers and stuff.

And now here she's kind
of doing the same thing.

Like, and for them to not have really
given us any, um, actual evidence that

Rena Hecht is, like, is that girl,
is her- She's the rainmaker, okay?

Yeah, apparently, but, like, she's…
she act like her shit don't stink.

not showing up to her meetings.

conversation is grateful that Eli

kind of figured this out, and I was
like, you could have figured this out

by picking up the phone and having a

the benefit of the doubt Even, even if

Finn will sleep with Alicia, like, okay.

And it expands so that there are
two Black men interviewing Alicia.

Uh, next thing we see, like I don't know
how or why, but Alicia's like rushing

into the Florrick go- girls office, and
Cary's like, "Did you see the news?"

And she's like, "Oh my God, what could
it be now?" Like, after the news.

He's like, "No, no, no.

It's good news.

It's good news.

The state's attorney's office is going
after Kyle Pepper, the lab pharmaceutical

company, and they price gouged on their
AIDS medication to AIDS patients."

And then there's a clip of Louis Canning
being hounded by reporters, and he's like,

"No comment, no comment, no comment."
So they go back into court, and they're

talking about, like, the juror situation.

Canning comes up and he's like,
"I know what you're thinking.

I know what you're thinking.

There's this gay guy who is on the
jury, and he thinks that he's gonna

view the Kyle Pepper thing, like,
against me, and that could g- that

could, you know, be bad for me.

I know what you're thinking, but I think
I have … I think, like, level heads will

prevail." And Cary's like, "Oh, he's gay?

I had no idea." And Alicia
goes, "Oh, well, see, like

we're not worried about him.

We're worried about juror number
five because her son died of AIDS."

To which that pushes the
deal to down to $1 million.

Peace is actually in because this
is the first day of court, like

they were about to start the trial.

They agree and get out on a million dollar
settlement, and Alicia rightly tells

Canning, "It's a deal if you stick to it
this time." Well, listen, I feel like, uh,

Canning came out of this, uh, it- Oh, yeah

it, it worked- If the lowest offer was
140 and now- Right … uh, he's up to

a million, I would, like again- Yeah.

I think he did pretty well … it's
the whole like Canning letting

people think that they won, but
he actually won type of thing.

So I, I think he came out the better
in this 'cause he would've just

gotten 140,000 at the start of this
thing, and now he's up at a million.

to think of like in real terms.

And they figure out that it was Louis
Canning who was giving, obviously,

like, it was obvious- Well- … that
it was gonna be Louis Canning- And

I'm like- … giving that information

and, like, Diane, just last episode
you found out that Louis Canning

and David were plotting against you.

Like- Yes … and you f- you thought
the first culprits were Florrick/Agos?

Like, how did you not see that coming?

How did you not know who
was actually behind this?

Well, because she had the information from
Kalinda that Cary had, had a meeting with.

Yeah.

I guess so.

So she thinks that that was going on.

Um, and Alicia's like,
"I'll help you, Diane.

I'll help you." And Cary's like, "This
isn't our fight." And Diane's like-

Cary's like, "Hold up" … "That's right.

It's mine." Cary's like, "Oh,
you getting pushed out by, by

people at Lockhart/Gardner here?

You know what that feels like.

And then the last scene of this episode
is Peter shutting down his computer,

and he's got this, like, candid photo of
Alicia as his backdrop or as background.

And he looks at it, and then
the door knocks, and it's Lauren

asking if he needs anything else.

And we can only imagine
where the frick that goes.

He's like, "I'll tell you what I
need, L- uh, Lauren." And wh- and, and

you know what this made me think of?
