The launch of Liverpool City Region’s new life sciences investment zone is set to unlock up to £800m of public and private investment, as well as 8,000 new jobs. The news follows the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, which triggered the first instalment of the government’s £160m contribution.
The investment zone plans include 21 initial projects that local leaders hope will boost the economy by creating new hi-tech facilities, delivering business and innovation support, and training the next generation of talent. Programmes are expected to focus on things like, child health, infection control, vaccine production, personalised medicine, as well as data and AI.

The Local Government Association (LGA) has launched its 2024/25 Sector Support Programme.

The LGA hopes to support councils with new and enhanced tools to harness opportunities, drive improvement across all regions and deliver essential services to communities.

The support programme includes the strengthened Corporate Peer Challenge (CPC) approach which has a greater focus on data, evidence and finance to assess council performance and productivity.

This year the LGA will launch a flagship national recruitment campaign to help overcome the recruitment and capacity challenges facing local authorities. The campaign aims to attract new talent and promote the benefits of a career in local government.
