Hey everybody, and welcome to another episode of sports prep live. Sports prep live, where we unbox the bike and talk excellent in athletics.
Unknown Speaker 0:35
Welcome back to sports prep live. I'm your host, great and press Scott, um,
Unknown Speaker 0:40
we got a lot of things to cover today. We got some WNBA. We need to talk about some things going on in the NFL, specifically with the New York Jets border League and high school basketball just wrapped up this past weekend. So we got a lot to talk about there, as well as UNLV football. Moving on to six and one, we're going to start there. Um, they played Oregon State last week 133, to 25
Unknown Speaker 1:07
at Oregon State. Hodge Malik Williams had a little bit of off night 15 for 27 196 yards of touchdown in an interception. Wasn't himself, but they still got the job done. KB, welcome back. Always good to have you always, what are we thinking? I you know, Hajj had a little bit of off game. He did, but they still got the job. They got the W and they are on a high note heading into the toughest game of the year. Matt sluka, who, oh my goodness, I almost forgot about him. Yeah, Matt, I think that was the point, yeah, to go on winning and forget about him. Yeah, and again. You know, harkening back to the show a few episodes ago, I just don't know how he is going to call back from this. I'll tell you how he's not.
Unknown Speaker 1:58
That is the thought of Nick Saban. You know legendary coach Nick Saban Alabama, roll tide,
Unknown Speaker 2:05
I just don't as a as a player. For again, for those of you who don't know, and I'm sure most of you do, the former quarterback of UNLV football left the team
Unknown Speaker 2:18
abruptly after a three and zero start, one of the best starts, if not the best start that UNLV has had in a generation, if not ever.
Unknown Speaker 2:28
And he left the team because he didn't receive an n, i l payment that he says was promised to him by one of their assistant coaches of $100,000
Unknown Speaker 2:39
now, I know to most people that is a lot of money, but for a division one quarterback, $100,000 is not a lot of money, and to sully your reputation, to walk out on your team for $100,000
Unknown Speaker 2:54
is a questionable move. And so he leaves, and Hodge Malik Williams comes in, and figuratively and literally picks up the ball. Yep, and now they are sitting at six and one. He has balled out. He has been incredible. He has led this team. And I understand that last season or preseason, it could have gone either way in terms of which one was going to get the starting nod. Matt ended up getting it. He left, even though there was someone that wanted to come out and pay him the $100,000 to stay. But I actually think the program is much better for it. So that's a little bit of background on who Matt slooka was, but I think UNLV has kept on marching. They look amazing. Looks like they're going to get a bowl game this year. They've got a tough component, a tough opponent coming up this weekend, I think on the 25th Yep, Friday. Boise State. Boise State. Who is, I believe, ranked number 15 or somewhere? They're 17th in the country right now. They're five and one, and they have a Heisman front runner, one of two Heisman front runners, Ashton Gentry, he's been balling. They're running back. He's leading the nation in total yards, total carries and total touches, right? Yes, as we're running back. And this is so this is a game that UNLV is not expected to win, but I expect good things from them. UNLV has converted not only myself, but I think a lot of other people, into some raving fans. They're just playing outstanding football right now. UNLV, I don't think UNLV is going to give these dudes too much of I mean, this is a team that played Oregon, number one team in the country, and this running back who just, who just did some shady stuff themselves, who you said, By the way, they're running back. Oh, well, what you know, what division is he playing in? Is he playing against real competition? Yes, when they played Oregon, he went 25 carries, 192 yards, three touchdowns. This is the number one game in the country. That's big. They lost the game by three. That's their only loss, 37 to the.
Unknown Speaker 5:00
34 Okay, so this team is serious, Boise State, okay, sorry, I will say, UNLV, I'm pulling for you. It's not but I understand, listen, if it doesn't happen, I understand. I would love it if it does, but I doubt is gonna happen. Great. Boise State is serious, pulling for you rebels, but I do understand, yeah, their quarterback questionable. I will I say UNLV has the advantage at quarterback, the Boise State quarterback. He went when they played Oregon, he cost them the game 17 for 40 148 yards. Yeah, that's well below 50% pass, which is what sub par means, right? That's sub par, um. So you know, he cost him the game against Oregon, but Ashton Gentry, if you just hand him the ball and get out of the way or block for him,
Unknown Speaker 5:49
it's gonna be a long night for you and LV if it still may be a good game for us to be in the building. Yeah, yeah. October 25 Absolutely, this Friday, yes.
Unknown Speaker 5:59
So I expect a good game.
Unknown Speaker 6:02
If I had to make a prediction, I'm rooting for UNLV. We all are. But, you know, I can't, I can't not be realistic here. I would have to predict that Boise State's gonna get the job done. Rebels, you do not have to be better than them every day of this week or this season, just one day just got to be better than one day.
Unknown Speaker 6:23
And that's that's possible. I will say I trust, yeah, I trust Hosmer, great quarterback,
Unknown Speaker 6:29
but Ashton Gentry is a Heisman front runner. It's him and Travis Hunter, right? Gotta respect that too. So you know that's gonna be interesting. Great, impressed guy here on Sports prep live. We just discussed UNLV football program, and now we are moving on to high school basketball. Border League. Yes, sir. Border League was held this past weekend, Friday the 18th through Sunday the 20th, yes. And lot of big names saw you there. Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely. Lot of big names showed out
Unknown Speaker 6:59
Utah preps
Unknown Speaker 7:02
looking like one of
Unknown Speaker 7:05
them, Columbus from Florida. We talked about them quite a bit. Boys, loser twins, you know, Jackson guests on this show, my boy, Jackson Richardson, yes, great friend of mine. You know, they played and they played well, and those two teams collided in the championship
Unknown Speaker 7:25
on Sunday. That was an amazing game. Columbus was down in the second half, yeah, by 14. I think it was 16.
Unknown Speaker 7:35
And to claw back and lose that game, I think the final score was 6968 it was, if I'm not mistaken, my problem if I'm the coach, yes, I'm not happy, even though, you know you call out force and all that, I'm not happy with the last the way they lost the game. I saw that final play, right? I've re watched it time and time again. So they had the ball. They had the ball with 19 seconds left, 17 seconds to shoot, correct. 32nd shot clock and correctly. They had 17 shoot. They dribbled out 11 of those 17 seconds looking to get a Post Entry to Cameron Bucha correct. They get it to him with five to shoot, yes, so there's seven seconds left, and he likes to back down with a double. He doesn't dribble until three backs away to the three point line, turns over his left shoulder, never gets a shot off, and doesn't even come close to getting a shot off. Done his hands when the buzzer sounded. And I'm not talking and we're not saying in his hands he's shooting in his No, he's holding it on his waist, basically, yeah, he might as well be looking to throw an inbound. Not tough in
Unknown Speaker 8:46
a good way. Shotcock runs out. There's two seconds left in the game. You know, Utah prep, just a tough loss, throws it down the court, and that's it.
Unknown Speaker 8:55
So great, great effort. He's a great basketball player. His brother's a great basketball player. They are going to their father's alma mater,
Unknown Speaker 9:03
following Cooper flag, yes. Oh, but Cooper's gonna be gone, yeah, if he stayed. But they're heading they're heading to Duke,
Unknown Speaker 9:11
same as their dad who played at Duke before them, obviously.
Unknown Speaker 9:16
But really a excellent team, an excellent game. You couldn't have asked for more, just the ability to claw back and get into that game against a really worthy opponent. AJ demands had balled out. I think he had 2028 points. Yes, he continues to show who he is as the number one player in the country for his age group. He's going to be a number one draft pick, no doubt about it.
Unknown Speaker 9:43
It was just a fantastic game. It's always fun when border league comes here to Las Vegas, and I think it's on ESPN on demand. ESPN too. So for those of you out there who are high school hoop fans for elite, elite competition, also, yes.
Unknown Speaker 10:00
In border league as well, on the girls side, local team, Bishop Gorman. As you all know, Bishop Gorman is my school.
Unknown Speaker 10:10
This team looks good now. I've had, I've had Coach K on the program as well. Big shout out to Coach K. Love Coach K. She was she was here. We had a great conversation last season. Has got an all star on her squad. I'm not just talking about the one player. This team is one of the best 20 teams in the country. They came in ranked in the 60s, yes, and they showed out. They played the number one team in the country on Sunday, and lost the game by 960
Unknown Speaker 10:41
shouldn't lose to a one correct by nine Correct. That should be a 2030, point. So that so that's 60 placement. Well, I don't know if it was ESPN or prep hoops or max preps. Max preps, they're gonna jump to the wrong we're gonna jump to the 20s or the teens. Yes, this team, this team is serious, the team they played in the state championship Centennial last year, who I mentioned on on the episode with Coach K had won eight times in a row. Gorman played a team. They beat that team by 30. Centennial lost to them by 15. Tough Gorman is if you do net, if you do net points right, plus minus, they're 45 points better than the team they beat by four in the state championship last year, right, right? I've seen firsthand the work they're putting in in the off season, in the weight room, in the gym, on the track. I've seen it firsthand. It shows you know, Addie Carr, she had 17 against that number to one team in the country. Lizzie spate, can't talk. Can't speak enough about her. She had 26 all star this team is good. This team is really good. They're going to win the state championship this year, and I think they'll be competing for one of the for a spot is one of the best 10 teams in the country. They're that good. They don't have a lot of size, but they play together. Everyone can shoot, and they're unselfish and and what I noticed this year is nobody over dribbled. And that's something that we talked about right at their state championship game, nobody over dribbled this time around. Not once it was they were swinging the ball. They're hitting their shots.
Unknown Speaker 12:14
They ran up against this girl, Aliyah Morris, from the IE eagles, tough. Tough. She had 32 in the game against Gorman. She's one of the best players in the country, but you know, you lose to the number one team by nine, you have nothing to hold your head down for you hold your head. No disagreement here. Yeah, the Gorman Gayles female basketball team is an outstanding evening of entertainment. So if you get a chance in your in the vicinity, please check them out. You will not regret it. They are fabulous basketball team. Lizzie spates is a baller, absolutely. And you know Coach K, she took over this team last year, first year back, led him to a state championship. And then this year, it looks like they're going to repeat. But the year before that, this team was a 500 team. They went 14 and 14. Wow, wow. And now, then they had a great record. They lost three or four games last year. And I see them in state, they might not lose. I don't know if there's a team in Nevada that can beat them this year. So they're looking good. You know, I got nothing but respect for Coach K Lizzie, Addie, the whole squad. You know, this team is fantastic. It's great. And Prescott here on Sports prep live, we've spoken about UNLV football team their upcoming game against the Boise State this Friday. Make sure we all check that out. We've spoken about border League, you know, basketball all around the country. Columbus playing Utah prep. AJ, davansa, Cameron Boozer, Caden Boozer, Jackson Richardson, as well as the bishop Gorman girls basketball program looking like one of the better teams in the country. Yep, yep.
Unknown Speaker 13:49
So in the NFL, Aaron Rodgers got a trade that he might have wanted for Davante Adams. Yes. And the Jets they get Adams from the Raiders they play the Steelers, who, you know, they're five and two, but really, come on, they're the Steelers, right, right?
Unknown Speaker 14:09
37 to 15. Yeah, this is, this will be a quick hit for us, right? Yeah, only because Dave Adams obviously played here for the Raiders. So it's a story of interest. He goes to the New York Jets to reconnect with his old partner in crime, Aaron Rodgers, and the last time that they were together, Aaron Rodgers was balling, yeah, and Dave Adams actually did not want to leave Green Bay, but he was being jacked around about his money. And so by the time Green Bay came and backed up the truck, he was psychologically disconnected from the team. Didn't want to leave, but he just felt like he was being disrespected. Fast forward to today, or fast forward to
Unknown Speaker 14:53
recent times, and he ends up, obviously, at the here, with the Las Vegas Raiders. I.
Unknown Speaker 15:00
And still one of the top receivers in the game, Raiders, the team.
Unknown Speaker 15:07
It's tough. It's tough. We don't want to say anything negative about the home team. They've got some work to do. The most negative thing I can say about the Raiders without being disrespectful, they're the Raiders. I'll just keep it up. Yes, yes. And so, you know, and it's, this isn't a show. You know, we will be honest and forthright when it comes to the Raiders, but they're not really our topic of discussion. So Dave Adams leaves, goes to New York, reconnects with Aaron Rodgers, and game one is looking like a complete waste. Aaron Rodgers has not been Aaron Rogers for a couple of seasons now. Well, last year he was out. The whole year, he was injured. But he's 40 years old, and he's not Tom Brady, and I think somewhere in the back of his mind he may have felt because he's got, what, four MVPs as a quarterback,
Unknown Speaker 16:05
but not four championships. I only got one of those. I think in the back of his mind he was thinking, Okay, well, I'm on par with Tom Brady as a quarterback. I don't think that's true and debatable, and so because of the four MVPs, but that's a popularity contest. You know, there was some where he probably edged out someone, and you could have made a case for another individual, but right now, and he didn't show up for training camp, which sends a message to your teammates
Unknown Speaker 16:37
right now, Aaron Rodgers is just looking like hot garbage. Yeah, and I don't know if this was the move that Dave was expecting it to be obviously, he's going to play out the season. The Jets are trying to, you know, salvage their season. I don't think that's going to be possible. They don't have the easiest road to hoe over the next, you know, seven, eight games.
Unknown Speaker 17:01
They've got a tough task in front of them, yeah, and they may need to be next year, looking for a young gun, a nice young quarterback, move, get them in there, teach them and maybe learn under Aaron Rodgers. But Aaron Rodgers as an elite quarterback, those days are gone, and somebody needs to tell them, tank for chador.
Unknown Speaker 17:22
Okay, okay. I mean, if you get the number one pick, sure door is tough. Sure is tough. Well, you said a mobile young quarter, and that he is sure is tough. Colorado is doing the darn thing. Yeah, five and two. Yeah, prime might be up for Coach of the Year. Yeah, absolutely. He gets a couple more victories under their belt. Under his belt. I think they're five. And two weren't expected to win four games this season, so they're looking pretty good over there.
Unknown Speaker 17:48
Great. And Prescott here on Sports road live, we've discussed UNLV football team, we've discussed border League, we've discussed a little bit about the NFL. And now let's get to everything that we really want to talk about, or I really want to talk about, what the heck was game five of the W Oh, m g, I need to speak for a second. I apologize for the tangent. I'm about to go, oh, m g, I'm about I apologize. What was that in advance, okay, WNBA finals, let's just set the stage the links. They win game one in overtime, I thought that they should have won in regulation because Brianna Stewart got a foul call that she shouldn't have gotten correct. But the links hold on to win the game liberty. Win Game Two, fair and square, it was kind of a blow out the whole way. Game three, they win on a Sabrina UNESCO, game winner that if she shoots shot, she shoots that shot 30 times, she'll make it four. I don't think that's she should have been fouled. It was lucky. It was a lucky Cheryl Reeves stubbed her toe in that one. She should have been fouled game four, another classic. Minnesota wins this game on an end of game foul call that was clearly a foul, and she makes both free throws. New York has a shot to win it. Sabrina again, she misfired no mas. So the series is two to two. Yes, game five in New York.
Unknown Speaker 19:05
Now keep in mind, these are the best two teams in the WNBA. The whole game the refs aren't really calling fouls, so we're looking at, well, they're not calling fouls on the Liberty. Yeah, for Minnesota, they were calling fouls, but they didn't call any on the New York Liberty. So Minnesota gets out to a lead. New York comes back with the help of the refs,
Unknown Speaker 19:27
but Minnesota has a two point lead, 60 to 58 with five seconds to go.
Unknown Speaker 19:37
I need everybody to understand the magnitude of what I'm about to say. Brianna Stewart catches the ball, gets her shot blocked, travels, yeah, she catches the ball, travels, goes to the basket, gets her shot blocked, flails and gets a foul call, yes. Damian Lillard, LeBron, James Stephen Curry, the analyst on the show, every myself, every.
Unknown Speaker 20:00
Buddy on the planet has reacted to this and said that wasn't a foul, it wasn't a foul, it wasn't even close to a foul. It was an atrocity. It was the worst call that I have ever seen in basketball, men's or women's. My own games included Bishop Gorman blakers. I don't care who it is that is the worst call I have ever seen. You don't call that foul in the last game of the season. Winner wins the championship was a disappointment. Nafisa Collier, who probably could have had an argument for the MVP after what I saw from Asia in the playoffs, that was just trash. But Nafisa bought out the whole playoff. She did. She had a great game in game five, and they foul her out, you don't foul out the best player on the team that is on the road or the marquee player, right? You want to see Nafisa going up against Brianna Stewart, right? You don't foul her out. Brianna Stewart didn't come close to fouling out. Sabrina UNESCO shot one for 19. Yes, they shut her down, but the Liberty got so much help from the refs that they were able to stay in the game. Because why wouldn't you help the Liberty? They're the big market team. I'm gonna say what other people won't say they wanted the team from New York to win because they got all the celebrities. They got big marketing team. You got Angel Reese showing up. It's New York. You want the team with the huge market to win? Minnesota is not a big rapping on the Midwest team, but I don't care what anyone says, Minnesota deserved to win that game. Minnesota deserved to win that championship. That was a that was despicable. It was disgusting. It was I don't have enough words to describe what I saw two Three nights ago, on Sunday, October 20, with respect to the WNBA finals. And I don't know if I will ever want to watch the WNBA finals again after that, it was absolutely ridiculous. Those refs need to be fired. They need to launch an investigation on the WNBA. Wow. Because this was just ridiculous. This is why people didn't want to watch the WNBA before. This is the type of stuff, yes, that makes you not want to watch the WNBA. This right here, these soft calls that you're giving to someone for flailing because she has a big name in a big market, the Liberty deserve to lose. They should not respect themselves for winning this championship. I do not respect them. And we're going to see that next year. I think they shot almost 20 31% they shot 31% No, but I was gonna say free throws. They shot nearly 20 free throws. And Minnesota Lynx shot eight. They went seven for eight. And I think New York liberally, went like 21 of 22 or something like that. 21 of 23 that's the game. And even then, like you said at the end of the game, Minnesota is up,
Unknown Speaker 22:49
and Stewie gets a pass, she travels quite a bit, steps on steps, on steps, and tries to get off a shot. The defense was good. Hand on the ball. It was all ball. And so in order to salvage that game for the Liberty, all of the refs come back. They do a review. Cheryl Rees challenges the call as well. She should have, and she should have been successful. And instead of saying, hey, it was a foul on the arm, like we called they couldn't say that. So they come up with, she was in the defender was in illegal guarding position, which she was not by the which is absolute trash. Yeah, it was ridiculous. It is not true. I do believe, because a lot of the suits from the WNBA were in the building, New York is like you said. It's a prime market, if not the prime market, they hadn't won, and I believe 28 years, because of all of that, a Minnesota Lynx gets screwed out of a championship, and Cheryl was hot after the game. I could not have agreed, agreed with her more. They did get robbed. Stephen A knows they got robbed. Now, he didn't want to hear it, because he's a New Yorker, but he knows they got robbed. Janae aguma Kay knows they got robbed. Everyone Shay knows they got robbed. Everyone who has discussed it, as you said earlier, has come to the same conclusion this was a horrible call, and it should never happen. To decide a championship game, you take it upstairs if you have to take it out of the hands of those referees so that there is no bias. And that's what they do in the NBA that they don't do in that current WNBA, if there's a call that the refs can't decide on, they send it to a place called Secaucus, New Jersey, New Jersey, right across the bridge W where they have trained officials to go over the call for as long as it takes. And people complain, Oh, it slows down the game. But they get all right. They get it right. That doesn't happen in the WNBA, and they need to start implementing it, like Cheryl Reeves said, because this was absolutely ridiculous. I have never seen anything like this. This was worse than the Dez Bryant catch on fourth down.
Unknown Speaker 25:00
Against the Packers in the NFC divisional round that cost them right win right in 2013
Unknown Speaker 25:06
this was worse, I think you know, from referee versus coach. This was a worse call than Pete Carroll not handing the ball to Marshawn link, okay, I don't know about that. No, no, I do. I don't know about that, because at least you give yourself a chance. That was bad football. That was bad doesn't matter. This was worse than the no call in the 2018, NFT championship game, which between the ravens and the saints, or, excuse me, the rams and the saints. Yes, the no call on clear pass interference, on on the Rams. That cost the saints. You're putting up a championship all time, great, horrible calls. Because this is for me, this is the all time. Great, horrible call. I'm very passionate about the WWE, as everybody knows, this was disgusting. This was despicable. I can't stand what I saw. I can put up with the ACES losing in a playoff series, even though I ranted about that too. I can put up with it. I can put up with Caitlin Clark getting pushed around and abused during games because she dealt she dealt with it the right way. I can put up with people saying, Angel Reese is better than Caitlin. I can hold up. Stop, stop, stop. Who said that there were people at the beginning of the season like family members, like Cheryl swoops,
Unknown Speaker 26:21
practically family members, Cheryl swoops and her family, not Cheryl swamp family, but angels family might be the only people on the planet making the argument that angel Reese is a better basketball player. That's neither here nor there, because Caitlyn got the of the year unanimously, and she's first team on. Well, no, not unanimously, because Cheryl swoops did have a vote, and of course, she voted for Angel race, but that's another subject for another day. Okay. Well, it was close enough to unanimous. It was it was a bad call. Only one of them was first team all. WNBA. For any of you that did not see the end of that game, I encourage you to go back. I'm sure it's all over YouTube, as is the commentary. It is all over YouTube. It was literally one of the worst calls. Nafisa said all of sports. Nafisa said, quote, she will never get over the controversial call at the end of that game. If I were her, I wouldn't have I wouldn't get over it either. And if I were Cheryl, she shook no hands, she gave no hugs. And if I were Cheryl Reeves, I would have gone in a lot heavier than she did in that post game interview. And she's gonna get fined for calling out the referee. I will look Steven. They did make this case, and I do agree with it.
Unknown Speaker 27:28
This game should have been won, or this series should have been won in Minnesota when and you referred to it a while ago in the middle of your I'll call it a rant, but it's an erudite rant. Yeah, that lucky shot she made. It was but they had, I think, seven seconds on the clock to get that shot off. Yeah, they should have, they should have, they should have fouled it, and they did not foul her. That was an egregious missed call for Cheryl Reeves, no way, either way you win. Either way you win the series. Because if that happens, okay, same Minnesota, she goes to the line two free throws. You've got the ball in your hand. Minnesota goes on to win that game. Who's to say they're not going to rig the game for for viewership for game five? Because New York, again, big market team you want. They were handed, they were handed a championship, yeah, because they handed on a silver platter, because they got their butts ran out of town last year by the aces, when they were actually good, they got their butts kicked. This might be New York is a bigger market than Las Vegas, but they got worse than LeBron James getting handed a championship against the Golden State. Don't do that because he didn't get handed a championship. Cleveland won game seven straight up. They got a stimulus package. This is worse than when the and this is worse than when the NBA made rules to make the game easy for Michael Jordan, because they were they couldn't, you know, rough them up like they roughed everybody else up. So, you know, okay, I've got your dander. They changed the rules to make the game easier for Michael Jordan and the bulls, and then they win six championships in eight years. But you know, only only took a rule change, because when they changed the rules, then the bulls started winning. Okay, no more. They changed. Your generation is coming out of you, your your young generation. I have nothing to say. Thanks for tuning into this episode of sports prep live.
