Are you tired of constantly setting and chasing after goals, only to feel like you're running in place or falling short?
If so, it may be time to consider a different approach.
Let's be honest: building a company from nothing is incredibly hard. It has been for me. I started my entrepreneurial journey at age 8. Yep, you read that right....8! Since then, I've started, run and sold multiple businesses with no partners and no funding. All my life I've had to build something from nothing, and that's what I've gotten really great at - tenacious, creative and extremely smart strategy coupled with hard work. Welcome to The Do What Is Necessary podcast—I’m your host, Andrew Moon.
Listen in as I share all the mistakes I’ve made and, more importantly, what I’ve learned from them, with no fluff, and no rose-colored glasses. The Do What Is Necessary Podcast is a show where we cut through the toxic hustle and grind mindset and dig into what it actually takes to start and grow a “calm business”. Calm is family first. Calm is more independence. Calm is sustainable practices for the long term. Calm is joyful. Running a calm company is a choice.
I’ll be giving unfiltered advice every week, 10 minutes per episode each. I want you to walk away from this podcast with the mindset and tools you need to be successful.
This podcast is for entrepreneurs, side hustlers, and busy professionals with a short attention span (like me)—you’ll get quick-hitting, actionable information in every single episode. If you give me your time, I promise it won't be wasted. Now let's get to work!
Are you tired of constantly
setting and chasing after goals?
Only to feel like you're running in place.
And that you always come up short.
Well, if, so it might be time to
consider a different approach.
Instead of focusing on.
Specific outcomes.
Try creating systems.
Systems to guide your
actions and progress.
Systems are a powerful tool for achieving
success in reaching your potential.
They provide a framework for consistent
action and additive adaptation.
And get help you build the skills
and knowledge needed to succeed
in a variety of situations.
My establishing a set of
habits and practices to follow.
You can create a path to
long-term success and fulfillment.
And this episode, I want to
explore my top five reasons.
Why it's better to create systems.
Instead of goals.
Uh, point number one.
Systems are more flexible
and adaptable than goals.
Goals are typically specific and fixed.
And achieving them requires a certain
level of predictability and control.
As we all know, being an entrepreneur.
This can be problematic
because circumstances change.
Unexpected events come up.
And then it might mean no longer possible
or advisable to pursue that original goal.
Then we get down on ourselves,
then we, we feel like a failure.
But in contrast systems are designed
to be flexible and adaptable.
They provide a framework for
taking consistent action.
But they allow for those adjustments
and modifications as needed.
This means that even if the specific
outcomes of a system are uncertain,
The process of following the system
can still be pursued effectively.
Point number two.
System's focus on the process.
Not just the outcome.
Goals are often defined in terms of a
specific outcome that is to be achieved.
This can create pressure to perform
and can lead to a narrow FARC focus
on that end result, potentially at the
expense of other aspects of the pursuit.
System's on the other hand, focus
on the process of achieving.
Results.
By establishing a set
of habits and practices.
That we can follow consistently.
Entrepreneurs can build the skills
and knowledge needed to adapt and
succeed in a variety of situations.
This not only leads to better
long-term outcomes, but it also
helps to cultivate a growth mindset.
And a sense of progress
and accomplishment.
Along the way.
Point number three.
The systems can be more
motivating than goals.
Goals can be de-motivating if
they're not achievable or if the
progress towards them is slow.
We entrepreneurs, we want
things to happen fast.
This can lead to a sense of frustration.
And a lack of motivation.
System's on the other hand
can be highly motivating.
By providing a clear set of actions to
take and a framework for making progress.
Systems can help you as an
entrepreneur, feel a sense of
control and accomplishment.
This can lead to that motivation
that we need and that greater sense
of satisfaction with the pursuit.
Point number four.
Systems can lead to better.
Decision-making.
Decision-making is an important
aspect of achieving any goal.
However, the pursuit of goals
can sometimes lead to sub optimal
decision-making we make bad decisions.
As the, that focus on the end result.
Rather than the process of getting there.
System's on the other hand, can help
guide that decision making by providing a
set of principles or criteria to follow.
This can lead to more
thoughtful and deliberate.
Decision-making.
And can help avoid that
rash impulsive action.
That we entrepreneurs sometimes
can be the death of us.
Point number five.
Systems can promote longterm success.
You've heard me talk a lot about that.
Goals are often focused on achieving.
A specific outcome in a short term.
Maybe this month, maybe this
quarter, maybe this year.
While this can be motivating.
It's not necessarily.
A great path to follow.
If we want that long-term success.
System's on the other hand.
Are designed to promote
that longterm success.
Because we're again, establishing
habits and practices.
That can be followed
consistently over time.
By building the skills and knowledge
needed to adapt and succeed.
And we need that.
Adaptability as entrepreneurs,
as business owners.
That's how we set ourselves up
for success in the long run.
So there you have it.
There, those are my top five reasons
why I think it's better to create
systems instead of setting goals.
Gold's can be useful
in certain situations.
But they can also be limiting and
de-motivating, if they're not achievable
or, or if that progress is slow.
So systems on the other hand, again,
Consistent action and adaptation.
That's the framework that we're building.
By establishing those
habits and practices.
We create that path to long-term success.
So the next time you're
tempted to set a goal.
Consider creating a system instead.
Uh, trust me, your future
self is going to thank you.
I just spent a year with no goals.
I've created systems instead.
And I can tell you.
From experience, that is one of the
best decisions that I've ever made.
If you have any tips
that have worked for you.
As far as goal setting
and creating systems.
Uh, feel free to share
those in the comments.
As always stay humble and kind
and always do what is necessary.
I'll see in the next episode
