Welcome to So Much To Say: A Legal Podcast For People where we explore the behind-the-scenes of work, law, life, and everything in between. We’re your hosts, business development and legal marketing coaches Jennifer Ramsey and Megan Senese, and we’re here to showcase the human side of the legal world, from marketing and consulting to the very real challenges of balancing ambitious careers with being human. This isn’t your typical, dry legal show. Instead, So Much To Say is a human-centered leadership, marketing, and culture podcast through the lens of law. We bring you real stories, candid conversations, and thoughtful insights that remind you that outside of being a lawyer or legal marketer, what makes you human matters too. So whether you’re navigating billable hours, building meaningful relationships, redefining success, or simply trying to stay human in a high-performance profession, this podcast is for you.
Stay human. Stay inspired. Namaste (or whatever keeps you human).
[00:00:00] Megan Senese: We spend so much time being told to stop focusing on the doing and do more of the thinking.
Welcome to Minis with Megan on So Much To Say: A Legal Podcast For People.
We are closing out our anniversary month and I am reflecting on the last three years of business and looking ahead to the next three years of business, and you know those assessments that everybody has taken over the course of their corporate career, maybe a disc, maybe at a Clifton strength. I've always taken them and I've always been sort of disappointed that the results that I got were, in my opinion, kind of boring. My strengths were never strategy. Or Woo or influencing people.
[00:00:55] And those are the things that are celebrated as the most coveted, smartest people. At least that's how I have always looked at them. My number one lift and strength is discipline. And I remember getting that result and being like, yeah, that makes sense, but kind of boring. And now that we have completed three years of business.
[00:01:19] And we're closing out our anniversary month. I am realizing that is the thing that makes me really good at every job I've ever had is that discipline. We spend so much time being told to stop focusing on the doing and do more of the thinking, and obviously there's a time and place for every single piece of advice.
[00:01:41] But if we're only just thinking then who's doing the doing? And that is really where I think Jen and me shine is that we can facilitate back and forth between those oscillate back and forth between the thinking and the doing. It's the little bit at a time, but every single day that discipline is what has allowed me to.
[00:02:09] Grow a LinkedIn. Following that discipline has allowed me to find my voice to continue to show up day after day to continue with our podcast when a lot of people apparently quit after only a few episodes because it takes a lot of work and that's how we approach business development. It's a little bit at a time, pretty recently, someone also asked me like, if you were going to start over.
[00:02:35] What would you do? What would you, what do you wish you had known? And there's so many lessons that I can share with people, but if you are starting brand new in a lot of ways, you sort of have to be dumb. You sort of have to be naive. I am glad I didn't know some of the things that were going to happen.
[00:02:56] I'm glad that I was so unsure. You have to be a little bit absurd in believing what you're building will work. And if I knew every single bad thing that was gonna happen or every pitfall to go around, then I don't know if I would have been so, you know, feet first jumping into the deep end. Jen and I approach business development as it is not a one size fits all.
[00:03:25] So we can definitely give you ideas and best practices that have worked for us, that have worked for our clients, for our lawyers, for junior lawyers, for rainmakers, for senior counsel. But at the end of the day, it is what is going to work for you. So as we're closing out stages, third year of being in business as a legal marketing and business development consulting firm.
[00:03:49] We still are holding onto. Low and steady wins the race. And if that's the one piece of advice that you can take away from today's episode, it's that a little bit every day adds up, compounds, snowballs. It's laying that foundation and being so disciplined, stubbornly, disciplined. It's what you do when nobody is watching.
[00:04:17] It's what you do when you don't feel like doing anything. I still show up. We still show up and that showing up might look different day to day, but I'm always doing something.
