Trail Listening Post

Kathryn Sanders from Blue Mountain Clinic joins Mike Smith on Trail 103.3 to talk about Defiance on the Dance Floor, a community fundraiser celebrating resilience, solidarity, and the power of showing up for one another. Kathryn shares the inspiration behind the event, taking place four years after the Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade, and discusses Blue Mountain Clinic's mission of providing compassionate primary care, reproductive healthcare, and gender-affirming services in Missoula since 1977.
The conversation highlights an exciting night of music and entertainment featuring Desperate Electric, Montana's high-energy disco duo, drag performances from Eunice Sexx, special guest Stella Kinesics, a community silent auction, and more, all hosted at Free Cycles.

Defiance on the Dance Floor takes place Saturday, June 27, with free STI and HIV testing beginning at 6:00 PM and the dance party kicking off at 7:00 PM.

Plus, Kathryn shares the story of an unforgettable chance encounter with legendary guitarist Derek Trucks during a memorable weekend in Missoula.

Mike Smith:
And you're tuned in to Trail 103.3, KDTR FM, Florence-Missoula. Mike Smith here with a spotlight on a local event. Our friend Kathryn from Blue Mountain Clinic is in. Hi, Kathryn, how are you?

Kathryn Sanders:
Hi! I'm super happy to be here.

Mike Smith:
This morning has been so nice and pleasant. I know it's going to get hot later, but I can't complain one bit.

Kathryn Sanders:
Yeah!

Mike Smith:
Well, you look all bright-eyed and ready to talk. Before we went on, you said, "Hey, I've got to tell you—I met Derek Trucks over the weekend."

Kathryn Sanders:
I did! It was the thrill of my life. We were coming out of Charlie B's around midnight, and there was Derek Trucks walking up Higgins. Nicest guy.

Mike Smith:
Just like a regular guy.

Kathryn Sanders:
Yes.

Mike Smith:
Because he is a regular guy—except he's one of the best guitar players in the world.

Kathryn Sanders:
In the world! He was so humble, such a regular guy. We shook his hand. It was a total pinch-me moment.

Mike Smith:
How did it start? Because sometimes I'm like, "I don't know if I should say anything." So he's walking toward you and you got his attention?

Kathryn Sanders:
Yeah, normally I probably wouldn't have said anything, but I couldn't help myself. I just blurted out, "I love you!" And then I said, "Thank you so much. Your music means so much to me."

Mike Smith:
Yeah.

Kathryn Sanders:
It was really cool.

Mike Smith:
He's not the type of rock star where people are grabbing locks of his hair like The Beatles back in the day. He's a regular dude.

Kathryn Sanders:
He is. I mean, he fits into Missoula perfectly.

Mike Smith:
And then he went into Charlie B's!

Kathryn Sanders:
I mean, how cool is that?

Mike Smith:
That's perfect. That's awesome.

Well, it sounds like you had fun with Zootown over the weekend.

Kathryn Sanders:
Yeah, and Pride, too. It was a great weekend.

Mike Smith:
Oh yeah, Pride.

Kathryn Sanders:
Yep. Everything went really well, and thanks for letting Trail 103.3 be involved in both of those things. And now we're talking about Defiance on the Dance Floor, an event benefiting Blue Mountain Clinic. Can I tell you a little about it?

Mike Smith:
Absolutely. Maybe give us some background and history on what the event is about.

Kathryn Sanders:
Today actually marks four years since the Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade. This week, we decided to throw a dance party to celebrate resilience, find joy during really tough times, and raise money for Blue Mountain Clinic, which has been serving Missoula since 1977.

Mike Smith:
And we're talking about bodily autonomy.

Kathryn Sanders:
Yes, we are. Bodily autonomy is so important. We think everyone should be completely in control of themselves. No one should be dictating those decisions for them. That's so much of the ethos of Blue Mountain Clinic—whether it's abortion care, gender-affirming care, or any other type of primary care.

Mike Smith:
There's a lot more that Blue Mountain Clinic does than many people realize. A lot of folks go there simply for primary care.

Kathryn Sanders:
Absolutely. I'd say we do more primary care than anything else.

Mike Smith:
The evening will feature a live performance from Desperate Electric. Tell us more.

Kathryn Sanders:
If you haven't seen Desperate Electric, you've got to come to Defiance on the Dance Floor. They're an incredible disco duo out of Butte. They're high-energy, so fun to watch, and truly electric. We're thrilled to have them.

Mike Smith:
And Eunice Sexx—spelled with two X's—Montana's Femme Fatale?

Kathryn Sanders:
Yes! They'll be putting on a drag performance between Desperate Electric's sets, and we're so excited to have them.

Actually, we also just added a second performer—Stella Kinesics—who will perform between sets as well.

Mike Smith:
This just in! Sounds like it's going to be a fun night.

Mike Smith:
Let's talk about the silent auction.

Kathryn Sanders:
We've got some really good stuff. The community has been so supportive. We wanted to focus on adventures because we know this town loves getting outside.

We've got donations from Clark Fork Yacht Club, Love Boat Paddle Company, and Blue Heron Nature Tours, along with lots of other fun experiences and products from local businesses.

Mike Smith:
As you say on the event page, "Come celebrate community, solidarity, and the power of showing up for one another. See you on the dance floor."

Give us the when, where, and how people can learn more.

Kathryn Sanders:
The event is taking place at Free Cycles, which I like to call the most Missoula place in Missoula. If you haven't been there, you've got to check it out.

Mike Smith:
It's refreshing. It feels like old Missoula, but it's also a forward-looking organization.

Kathryn Sanders:
Absolutely. It's such a special place, and it made perfect sense for us to have this dance party there.

This is happening Saturday. It looks like it might be raining, so it's the perfect excuse to come inside, get out of the weather, and dance with us.

Things kick off at 7:00 PM, but the Gay Health Task Force will be offering STI and HIV testing outside beginning at 6:00 PM.

The dance party starts at 7:00 PM.

Mike Smith:
All right. And all the details can be found at BlueMountainClinic—

Kathryn Sanders:
.org.

Mike Smith:
.org. Thank you. BlueMountainClinic.org.

What should people wear?

Kathryn Sanders:
Show up exactly as you are. Absolutely.

That said, we're leaning into a disco vibe, so glitter is encouraged. But really, just come as yourself. That's the Blue Mountain Clinic ethos—we want you to be you.

Mike Smith:
Well, thanks for showing up today at Trail 103.3, Kathryn.

Kathryn Sanders:
Thank you so much for having me.

Mike Smith:
How about a final thought? It can be about the event, the day, or something besides Derek Trucks.

Or it can be about Derek Trucks.

Kathryn Sanders:
I love that.

I'd just say this is going to be our biggest fundraiser of the year. Reproductive freedom is still under threat, even though Montana voters codified those protections a couple of years ago. There is still a lot of work to be done.

We really appreciate this community's support, and we would love to dance with you this Saturday.

Mike Smith:
All right. Thank you, Kathryn.

If you're moved by what you've heard, visit BlueMountainClinic.org for more information.

And now, for everyone who danced and got down with Tedeschi Trucks Band over the weekend, here they are on Trail 103.3.

Thanks, Kathryn.

Kathryn Sanders:
Thank you.
