Our mission is to take a stand for Christ while hunting from tree stands and enjoying God’s great outdoors. On every adventure, if you look for it, God will teach you something about Himself. That’s what we want to share, a show about awesome hunting and an awesome creator who made it all possible.
Speaker 1 0:00
The following is brought to you by the Stand Outdoors and is sponsored by Steel Pixel Studios, White Tail Heaven Outfitters, Hot Frog Print Media, and Word FM. Hey, welcome back, everyone, to the Stand Outdoors, the show where faith and the great outdoors come together. I'm Dave Baker, along with the founder of the Stand Outdoors, Mike Hayes, and today we are talking to our special guest, Ed Romanowski. He's from the Men of Courage Outdoors in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He's also a part of RestartMinistry.org in Lancaster, and also Invisible Archers of America.
Speaker 2 0:50
And Ed is, I guess you work with a group called Men of Courage Outdoors, the Chester County division, or how do you what do you call that?
Speaker 3 1:00
Well, we work with about 15 501 c3, so we're like a network organization. So what one lacks, the other has. There's strength in numbers. So our group is an outdoor ministry with multiple locations in Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, kind of about 100 mile radius of Chester County,
Speaker 2 1:22
and that is Men of Courage Outdoors. When you say we are,
Speaker 3 1:26
yes.
Speaker 2 1:27
Okay.
Speaker 3 1:27
So including in that group is about 15 500 1c threes, all with similar goals to reach men and young men, and then we also have a another program that for women that you know will guide them into organizations for young girls and young women.
Speaker 2 1:54
Good, good. And now you and I met at some sportsman dinners. I mean, you hit a lot of those that we're at, and and you share with me some pretty incredible things about guys that you've worked with that have, you know, just really come to Christ and and beat drugs or whatever problem they had, you know, and seen some pretty miraculous things happen. Can you talk about that a little bit?
Speaker 3 2:20
Sure. That's that's where I teach. I teach at a ministry called Restart Ministries in Ronks, Pennsylvania. So they have an excuse me. They have an online presence, and they have a six month program for any type of addictions. It could be, it could be depression. It could be alcohol, drugs. It could be pornography. Any type of addiction that Satan throws at men, this program deals with.
Speaker 2 2:53
And do you use the outdoors in a lot of this to help them?
Speaker 3 2:56
There is yes. We just recently went on a fishing trip and had a lot of fun, so we're blessed to have several properties that we manage and several private properties throughout the Chesapeake Bay area and Annapolis that we can take young men and adults fishing, and just have a good time out and fellowship, and just kind of share the outdoors with
Speaker 2 3:23
them. Yeah, it's great. You know, our theme verse is Romans 120. It talks about you know God is clearly seen by the things that He's made. You know, His incredible creation. So that man is without excuse. I mean, that was His first revelation. You know, to us, His His creation. And so I guess you've seen how that plays a big part in in helping these people connect with God, right?
Speaker 3 3:47
Yes, and I've seen like I'm a witness for the transformation. If the individual puts in the time and the work, and they surrender fully to God, and I've seen them get baptized, I've seen them get back into the working world, start families, start businesses, be successful, and never look back.
Speaker 2 4:09
Well, Ed Romanowski, let's let's let's learn a little bit about you, Ed. How long have you been hunting?
Speaker 3 4:16
Ah, I've been hunting and fishing. You
Speaker 2 4:19
know, ben and
Speaker 3 4:20
while fishing, I've been fishing since I could crawl. Really, I grew up in the city of Philadelphia, so I was within walking distance of the Delaware River.
Speaker 2 4:32
Okay, well, you were right in my backyard. Yeah,
Speaker 3 4:35
any chance I had to get to the river and fish, I did. And you know, we weren't allowed to swim there. My mother always had. We always said she had some type of clairvoyancy with being able to tell when we were swimming, but we smelled like the river when we came home. That's
Speaker 2 4:53
funny. How about hunting? Did you did you get started pretty young, or was that later? I did.
Speaker 3 4:59
Started with started with my uncles, and then there was one year that that I didn't hunt. And funny story, my uncle brought home to my parents and the family a whole deer, so it was field dressed, but it wasn't skinned or anything. And my father said, "Hey, take this knife and go into the yard and cut up the deer. Well, that's the first time I ever did that.
Speaker 2 5:25
Oh no, you mean no instructions? Just no instructions. No
Speaker 3 5:29
instructions whatsoever. My brother and I just hacked up piles of meat in some in some buckets, and we did. Looking back, I said we did a pretty fair job because we even cut the rib meat out.
Speaker 2 5:41
Ah, wow, that's great. Yeah.
Speaker 3 5:44
So yeah, so I started with a longbow, and the first animal I harvest was on the railroad, which was a rabbit
Speaker 2 5:52
with a longbow. Good job. Yes.
Speaker 3 5:55
So that started, and then my uncles were in the hunting, and I started out with shotgun hunting, and then got into the recurve, and then compound bow, and it's been history ever since. I have an organization called Invisible Archers of America, and we're in Maryland, Delaware, PA, and we just started a chapter in New Jersey to manage the deer in the suburbs, so we've been doing this for about 35 years.
Speaker 2 6:26
And what does that entail to manage the deer in in the suburbs?
Speaker 3 6:31
Well, we have private properties where we selectively place guys based on their experience, and we have like a five-year program, and we kind of go through and teach them how to be covert in the neighborhoods, so that we're not disturbing the neighbor neighbors or any horse people or anything like that. For example, we had a property that we had for eight years, and the neighbors, which were, which was a university that had roaming security. They didn't know we were on the neighboring property for for eight years, and then we currently do the university now. So,
Speaker 2 7:13
and then you know one thing that I run into sometimes because you know I'm a suburban hunter too, you know. I live on 10 acres, but there's all kind of property around me, and that is when the deer run, and I got to go down to the different properties to track it, and you got to get permission. Do you run into a lot of problem with that?
Speaker 3 7:34
No, we kind of have a good SOP and a script, and for example, I'll give you something that just came to mind. We we had one of the guys had shot a doe at last light, and it ran onto an adjacent property. Now the people that lived there would have never known if we went on their property and retrieved the deer, but that's not our process. So we knocked on the door and you know, explained to the woman that we wanted to retrieve the deer, and she said no. So I, her husband came, and I explained to both of them that you know this is this is how it works. I'm going to have to call the game warden. We're going to have to wait for him. By the time he gets here, it'll probably be nine or 930. At this point, you know, was was just after, you know, just after dark, and I said, you know, we only need 10 minutes to go onto the property and drag it back to your neighbors, or we can wait for the game warden and he's going to walk us on. So they opted to allow us to do that, and then over the years that we were there. We just had permission to retrieve, and we didn't really have to knock anymore. What I found most advantageous over the years is getting written references from the people that know
Speaker 2 8:52
us. Yeah. So
Speaker 3 8:53
they can they actually have more contacts with their neighbors. They see them every day, and you know, it's it's challenging for the ones that feed the deer. Yeah, you know, and they like to see them, but they don't realize that they die a slow death if they don't have any food in the winter time.
Speaker 2 9:14
Right, right,
Speaker 3 9:15
because of the overpopulation.
Speaker 2 9:16
Right, yeah, that's good to get those signatures and all. We try to do that too, and have good rapport with all the neighbors, and and boy, it goes a long way. And and most neighbors you run into, they there. I had this one lady; she just passed away not too long ago. But man, she'd call me up and go, "There's 20 deer coming your way. Kill them all, you know, because she spent 1000s of dollars. I mean, might have been even hundreds of 1000s on her landscaping, and they would come in the winter and just devour it, and and she hated them with a passion, and and so she would call me up and say, "Kill them all, Mike, but it was great, you know. But let me ask you this: Who who is like your main mentor? Growing up, you know, for hunting.
Speaker 3 10:01
Growing up hunting, I would say that was my my uncle, and then we had a neighbor that that took us hunting. So, I think it was that, and I think just being in the outdoors was just refreshing. You know, growing up in the city wasn't tough. We had what we considered the badlands to be like 20 about 20 blocks west of us, and it's a different world now. But I grew up in a in a Catholic home, and was able to walk to school for grade school, and then only had to take a bus and a train to school, and then when I was able to drive, or friends started driving. You know, we drove to high school, which was Northeast Catholic.
Speaker 2 10:49
Yeah, I was raised up myself. I'm Irish. You know, you almost-it's more of a nationality than it is to be Catholic. You know, when you're Irish, yeah, you're born Catholic. It kind of goes hand in hand. With Italians or Irish, you're born Catholic, you know,
Speaker 3 11:04
right?
Speaker 2 11:05
But but how about your? Let me let me hear some. What's your most memorable experience out there hunting?
Speaker 3 11:11
My most memorable are two two memories for me. My son Colin when he shot his first turkey.
Speaker 2 11:20
All right,
Speaker 3 11:21
and he was jumping up and down so high that the blind was coming off the ground. And we had hunted youth season for a couple years and and got close, but never got an opportunity for a shot. So this particular hunt in Montrose, Pennsylvania. We had we had a bunch of Jakes come in and some hens, and his first shot, he missed the he missed the turkey and split the flock. So called the flock back, and just as I was getting ready to tell him, hey, soon as that turkey passes the tree shoot, but I got up to the word tree, and he had already shot and flipped the bird, and we celebrated, and then we calmed down after that. And it was funny; we had three gobblers and a bunch of hens come by the blind at about 15 yards.
Speaker 2 12:18
Wow!
Speaker 3 12:18
And my son said to me, "Oh, take the gun and shoot. I said I can't. It's it's youth season only, so after they got past us, we radioed to my friend and his son that there was turkeys coming up the ridge. So that was very memorable for me. Hey, hey,
Speaker 2 12:34
you set them up. And then
Speaker 3 12:36
Jacob, my stepson, who is now 16.
Speaker 2 12:40
Ah,
Speaker 3 12:41
so he when we met, he was four. So when he shot his first deer with the crossbow, that's another memory. And then he's been harvesting one or two deer every year. And last year was the first year that he was able to sit by himself, so he had eight point on his mind, and he passed up several deer. He passed up a close to I would say a 150 class seven that had a broken that had a broken time, and I said to him, "We could have fixed that with the taxidermist, and he said, "Well, that would be a lie on my wall. So he harvested a nine-point last year. So
Speaker 2 13:30
that's great.
Speaker 3 13:31
That was awesome.
Speaker 2 13:32
Yeah.
Speaker 3 13:33
And sharing the word with him, he's you know he's in in Bible study at school, and he's just he loves the outdoors and he just he loves the Lord and you know at 16 years old he's gone through those trials and tribulations and he's got a good support team with him and it's just awesome to see him grow.
Speaker 2 13:55
That's great. Yeah, there's no greater joy than to see your kids serving the Lord. That's for sure. You know, I had three daughters, and I was praying for their husbands since they were like two years old. You know, because I knew they were out there somewhere, and I was and and I wanted them to be godly men. So I said, God, you know who they are. Go protect them, keep them growing, and and I I was a little selfish in my prayer because I would I prayed that they'd be outdoors men. They'd love, you know, tennis and sports and outdoors, and I wanted them to be godly for my girls. So a little bit of selfishness in there, but God answered all my prayers, man. All three son-in-laws are incredible godly men, and we're so grateful, man. So I encourage every all the listeners out there. If you if you have any kids, you know, start praying for their spouse, future spouses when they're one or two, as early as you can.
Speaker 3 14:51
Yes, prayer works.
Speaker 2 14:53
So what's the most challenging thing you've had happen out there in the woods? Ah, challenging.
Speaker 3 15:00
In the woods. Well, I would say there was two challenges. Number one, obtaining the private properties. So that's very difficult. Some of them have taken me years to to obtain, and a lot of these are huge corporations that operate out of state, and then we have a lot of huge retirement and healthcare facilities. So I guess trying to get past the the lawyers for the liability and explain to them that you know archery's safe if if you're taught properly and if you manage your backstops. So we're shooting from you know elevated positions, obviously stands and climbers, and convincing them that it's safe. Like so, for example, part of our policy has always been the hunter safety systems. So nobody climbs without the rope being there, and obviously with a climber, they're going to have a safe three-point safety harness, and they're going to have be attached to the tree from from the ground to to where they are, and then we have a maximum of 20 feet, so no one goes over 20 feet. Most of the guys stay at 16 or 20,
Speaker 2 16:28
yeah,
Speaker 3 16:29
and you know making that a habit for safety. So the biggest challenge is as far as being on the property is making and having the landowner understand what we do, and why we do it, how we do it, and that it's safe. And we have hundreds and hundreds of reference letters from you know small organizations to multi-million dollar corporations and homeowners association, so on and so forth. So that you know, gaining the properties is a challenge, and then also, I guess, mentoring the men that have been taught, like so. For example, I think you anybody can relate to this. You know, back in the day, we were put in homemade stands that were rickety ladders with nails in the tree, and climbing up in there without any safety, anything at all. And oh, don't worry about that step; it's just a little rotten, right? Right, right, right.
Speaker 1 17:37
It'll be fine.
Speaker 2 17:38
And we think we're invincible. I know. I fell one time, and it was it was scary. I mean, I was on the ground before I really, you know. You think, oh, I'll catch another limb or what? But I fell so I was just climbing up, you know, in the dark, you know, and I grabbed this branch that was, you know, I didn't have a safety line on, which I always have now, but I was fortunate. I I'd landed on top of a, you know, those old those fence fences that they make boundaries with with with the the the rock and the slate and all that stuff, and it was kind of crumbled down a little bit. But but boy, I hit I landed right on my my butt, you know. Thank God, and and didn't break anything, but but man, I was sitting on a donut and my lazy boy for a couple of months because that thing got so bruised my tailbone, and but nothing broke. I was one of the lucky ones.
Speaker 3 18:33
But
Speaker 2 18:33
ever since then, like I was one of those dumb guys that would I would climb up my tree stand without a safety rope, and then I get in the tree stand and I'd put the safety stuff on, you know, and I heard that described by a guy that was so smart. He said, "That's like driving without a seat belt, coming up to a stop sign, putting your seat belt on when you're at the stop sign, and then when you pull out, you unbuckle and start driving again. He said, "The most dangerous time is when you're climbing up and climbing down. You know, that's a
Speaker 3 19:05
great analogy. I
Speaker 2 19:06
thought it was great, and ever since I fell, though, I you know we're we're not we're not invincible, and I've heard too many horror stories, and so I always have a safety rope in the tree stand, and as I'm going up and going down, and as I'm putting it in, you know, it's just, it's just so anything could happen. And even I just fell like maybe six, seven feet, you know. But man, when I hit, I hit hard, and I was surprised nothing broke. But have you ever fallen, Ed? Have you ever had that happen? I
Speaker 3 19:40
have been fortunate enough not to fall. I've tripped many times dragging a deer. Yeah, I've done that, and I didn't actually, you know, get hurt or anything. So as we get older, we get a little bit smarter, and that you know what comes to mind is, and we talk about. You know some of the pitfalls of hunting, and we can kind of take this into to our lives and and our Christian walk is you know we have a lot of men, your your show for example, your podcast for your listeners that have fallen right and have gotten back up and was able to be restored and put back on focus. You know, it's like I I tell the youth sometimes I can take you hunting and and probably give you a 90% success rate from my own failures.
Speaker 2 20:36
Right. So in
Speaker 3 20:36
life, you know, until I I got saved and was baptized and knew the truth. I was going around in the dark, you know. I was of the world, right? You're trying to fill all these voids with things and people, and they're temporary. And you know, we can put you on a fast track to say, "Hey, this is the direction to take, and I can put a youth. We have a youth hunt every year that we donate to some of the church events that you've been to, and different organizations. So we try to get them their first year, and we've we've got a good success rate. But you know, a lot goes into that. So you explain to them and say, hey, you know, this was my life. You know, I had to go through these pains and these transitions to get to where I am now. Oh,
Speaker 2 21:28
it's so true.
Speaker 3 21:29
Yeah, the emptiness was the disconnect with our Creator, our Father.
Speaker 2 21:33
Right.
Speaker 3 21:34
That's what that's what our heart is really looking for-that love, and to receive the love back. and and once you get that peace, the Bible tells us it's a peace beyond understanding. There's no explaining
Speaker 2 21:48
it, right? I remember that on that movie about who was it the the guy that founded Calvary Chapel, but but he made a comment talking about the hippie movement in the '60s, and always said they're they're looking for all the right stuff, you know, love, joy, peace, but they're looking in the wrong places. And he was going to help them. You made me think of another book I wrote when I was in Bible college called "Failure: The Back Door to Success, and how God puts us in situations sometimes where He knows we're going to fail because we got to learn to trust him, like he brings up how you remember when when he was with the disciples and they were out on these fishermen who were out in a boat. Where were they the most confident in the flesh? In a boat, you know, because that's what they did for a living. And he puts them in the middle of the storm, you know, and he has this storm come up and and they're crying like little babies and he's asleep. Remember that? Yes. And then they wake him up. How can you be sleeping? I want a storm going. We're gonna die. And he and he just speaks to the wind and the rain. He calms it down and everything. And and he looks at him and he goes, "Oh, oh, ye of little faith. Now the guy was saying that wasn't an accident. You know, God knew all about. He planned that whole thing, you know. He wanted them to quit having confidence in their flesh. They they learned that, and and continue to trust Jesus, you know, to to live through them and in them, and they can accomplish some even greater things. So that, yeah, what you're saying is a lot of wisdom there. Now let me ask you this: How how did you do? Do you remember your convert when you came to know Christ? Were you young, old, or what?
Speaker 3 23:27
It was in 1988. It was one of the partners I worked with, and he was Christian, but he was different than everybody else. So he had always bought his Bible with him everywhere, and he bought a journal. And a lot of times, I would ask him questions why he didn't respond as somebody else would respond to certain situations. And he would say, "Well, you know, read this, read John read Mark. He said, "If you want to learn, you know, bring a notebook with you tomorrow, and you know, I'll start teaching you. But going back a little further, going backwards, when I was in high school, I I felt like I kind of always felt a tug on my heart going somewhere, but I didn't know what that tug was. So in the Bible studies in a Catholic high school, I would go back and I would read the Bible myself, and I was trying to find where it said to pray the rosary to Mary, where that came from, and I couldn't find it. So, respectfully to the brothers, I would say, brother, can you show me in the Bible where it says that I have to pray to Mary? I can't find it, and I kind of got a roundabout answer.
Speaker 2 24:55
Right,
Speaker 3 24:56
and then I also asked about a lot of the other. Practices like, for example, the blessing of the throats with the candles, and I would ask them, you know, where did that come from in the Bible?
Speaker 2 25:10
Right,
Speaker 3 25:10
and I always had a need to learn. I've probably been through Revelation 1000 times because I was so intrigued with the end of life, even being a teenager, to say, "Hey, where am I going to go if I die? Right,
Speaker 2 25:28
right.
Speaker 3 25:29
And then later on, I had this partner. His name was Fernanda. I called him Freddy, and he was a believer, and he was raised in the Catholic faith. His wife was from Colombia. He he was from Puerto Rico, and that's where my journey began. And the transformation was when he invited my girlfriend and I to. He's like, "Hey, do you want to come to a steak dinner on a Saturday night and see a play? And it and I said, "How much is it? And he said, "It's free. And I said I'm there, so you know steak dinner for me, no problem. And here it was an outreach with an altar call, so that's where I I felt like I was glued to my seat when the pastor was was calling people up front, and I got up and went down, and and that's where I I got saved.
Speaker 2 26:22
Yeah, you know it's amazing how people do get saved in places like that. I know I was like you're probably not Catholic anymore. I would guess going to a non-denominational church is that right? Yes. Well, you
Speaker 3 26:36
know it it it's this, and I was just discussing this with my brother John, who I gave you his information about, you know, man-made religions wrapped around the Bible. So, if it's not of the book and it's a book that was made by men, well, you know, there it it's false because it's a man it's a man-made religion, and you know, it tells us take up the cross and follow me. There's it doesn't say follow this specific religion. There's nothing in there. And not to say let let's let's be clear, I'm not downplaying that you can't be saved if you're a Jew, if you're a Catholic, if you're a Protestant, if you're a Baptist, right?
Speaker 2 27:23
Well, I know a lot of beautiful, powerful Catholic Christians that are that are into Bible studies and everything. It's amazing what God is doing. He meets you where you are. It's for sure.
Speaker 3 27:33
Exactly. Exactly. So it's not a. It is. It's not a a particular religion. It's it's just a personal relationship and that 100% relinquishment of ourselves to Him and say, hey, use me for what you built me for
Speaker 2 27:52
right and
Speaker 3 27:53
committing 100% God doesn't want 99.9.
Speaker 2 27:57
Yeah, exactly. Right. Yeah, He says if you lose your life for my sake, you'll truly find it. But if you keep it, then you'll lose it. And and those words, we as we grow in Christ, we learn how true, you know, those words really are more and more. And and yeah, those those are good things. So yeah, it was it was tough for me. I know I was the first one out of a family of eight kids to to actually be, you know, to to lead the Catholic Church, which you know, the one I was going to down in Tampa, Florida, where I used to live, I'm in Pennsylvania now, but it just you know they they just didn't really teach the scriptures well anyway, and you know, I probably could have found a good one, but I ended up going to a non-denominational Bible college, and I got saved through a non-denominational, you know, just like you, you know, group. And but it was hard because my whole family, you know, was Catholic, and it was a hard it was a hard transition, and a lot of them thought I was going off the deep end, but I guess you got that a little bit too, didn't you?
Speaker 3 29:05
Oh yeah. Well, my dad was a military dad, you know, from the Navy, and my mother was a devout Catholic. You know, she went to church and prayed the Rosary, and she probably prayed for 10 lifetimes for our generations, but yeah, she basically said, "Oh my gosh, you joined one of those cults, and you know we had some some very deep conversations, you know, through the years, and I think she came to the realization that you know it wasn't a cult, and you know I believe that Holy Spirit gives us the words and leads our footsteps. You know, and I thank them for raising. In a Catholic home, at least there was some stability of of knowing that there was a God and a higher being, right?
Speaker 2 30:09
Right.
Speaker 3 30:10
So one of my sisters in Christ said something to me, and it always stuck with me for many years. She said, "How would you know that your life is good if you didn't experience the bad in the world.
Speaker 2 30:26
Right?
Speaker 3 30:27
How did you? How would you know you were having a good life if you didn't know what a bad life was or bad experiences?
Speaker 2 30:35
Right. Well, listen, we're Ed. We've got about I don't know six minutes left or something. Was there anything else you wanted to touch on real quick that you wanted to cover while you're on here?
Speaker 3 30:48
Yeah, I just anybody listening, I and they have doubts about God or, you know, they're dealing with any troubles in their lives. I just you know I I just pray that they they just ask God just like we're talking now, just go in a quiet place if if you can take a walk in the woods or you can take a walk in the park, and just ask God to show Himself, you know, and He'll do it. Yeah, He will do
Speaker 2 31:15
it. Well, thank you, Ed. Really enjoyed talking with you. I can't wait to run into you again at one of the sportsman dinners. You always encourage me like crazy, and oh, that's
Speaker 3 31:25
that's that's refreshing. I appreciate that. And we
Speaker 2 31:29
got to get together because you got to teach me how to catch stripers.
Speaker 3 31:32
Oh yeah, maybe
Speaker 2 31:33
we'll have you on again, and you can talk about that.
Speaker 3 31:36
Okay, yeah, and you know we'll just yeah next time we can talk about some tips and tricks that have worked for me many years. Oh, I'd love
Speaker 2 31:45
it. Yeah, I'd love it. And you know,
Speaker 3 31:46
we all have our we all have our processes, right?
Speaker 2 31:50
Right.

Yeah. Also, check out our targeting the truth Bible studies. We have these Bible studies that include hunting videos. I mean, think about it. When was the last time you went to a Bible study and got to watch a hunting video? Well, that's what targeting the truth Bible studies include. You watch a video, then I share the three to five minute spiritual message at the end, but then you go into the five discussion questions. You have leaders' guide. You have everything you need.
