The KBEAR dudes interviewing your favorite artists!
The Artist Interrogations podcast. Alrighty. It is Peaches sitting down with Cam and Sam of Asking Alexandria. How are you guys doing? Yeah.
Doing good. Thanks. How's the tour been so far for you guys? Yeah. It's been good.
We're, like, nearly towards the end now. We've got about 8 shows left, so we're well into it. It's been great. It's been awesome. We came straight into this tour like off the back of like a lot of international traveling as well like we did Australia, South America.
So I honestly thought I was gonna be way more like burnt out at this point, but I feel pretty good. We've got, you know, a strong week ahead of us and Yeah. We took, like, what was it? Like, 12 days off in between those. So a little refresh and then it was, like, what, 5 weeks, 6 weeks of this.
So Oh, nice. We felt pretty good though. Feel comfortable Yeah. Buying this one. So yeah.
We already kinda been doing it for, you know, we've done a lot of shows this this year already. So it's been good. And you guys have been, like, touring as a band together for quite a long time now. Yeah. Just, not not to make you guys feel old or anything.
Yeah. No. No. Back back when I was, like, in, I think, late 8th grade middle school Yeah. I remember seeing Asking Alexandria shirts for the very first time.
And, like, I heard it. I'm, like at the time, all I listened to was, like, ACDC Metallica. So that was a little too heavy for me. But now it's, like, just perfect, you know? But, Welcome.
Yeah. Exactly. Yeah. But it's funny too because I was, like, how old are these guys? Because I Google searched it just and I'm, like, they're barely older than me.
You guys were, like I was 17 when I came to America. Yeah. Right. You guys were, like, really young when you guys first started the band. Living in a Walmart parking lot, baby.
Was that real is that really what happened? Yeah. We were in Jersey living in a in a Walmart parking lot. Wow. I remember having the guys all chipped in and got me a bottle of vodka for my 18th birthday, which isn't legal in America, but in England, you celebrate your 18th birthday, 21st.
So I just remember the sky blue sky blue vodka. That's all we could get. Sky blue vodka. It was a messy night. But now after touring all this time, do you guys have, like, a giant list of, like, restaurants and things to do on, like, your off days and all that?
We do. We like to we like to eat. Anytime there's a nice restaurant in the area, we like to go to it and try different things. But, yeah. Yeah.
We all love food. And do do a lot of, like, younger bands come up to you guys for, like, advice and such when it comes to, like, how to or how to, approach touring and all that? Yeah. I've had a few people come to me and ask me, like, if there's anything they can, you know, I can it's different. I I don't know.
It's like it really depends now because, like, I I I think it would be really hard to start panell just because it's so different from when we started. Right. So when I'm giving advice to people, I've got to keep that in mind that it's a different world from when I started. You know what I mean? I only know really what I'm what I know.
But I will say is just I think now just to be brave, I think, do what you wanna do and not worry so much about social media. Yeah. I think taking risks is important as well. Not a lot of people like to take risks early, like, early days, and I think that's one thing that we did a lot of. Yeah.
And just, like, just go for it, you know. I think that's really important for, like, those up and coming bands. So there's no half in it all. You you're all in and everyone has to be all in. So So you guys are from the UK?
Yeah. Lived in Jersey for a long time? Or No. A long time. Just for literally, it was the first place we went to when we landed in America in Oh.
In 2008. But, we're all from Yorkshire, England. But we've been here since honestly, I'm 33 now, and I've been in America since I was 17. So Yeah. I don't know.
It's crazy. It's a bit of a weird, like, feeling, innit? Yeah. It's been a while. We've been playing your guys' track Dark Void on the air, of course, not doing the radio edit stuff.
Because that's what makes me laugh is that, like, you know, typical rock radio, they avoid the screams. They have, like No. They call all the good stuff. Yeah. Like, the cabaret in Utah, for some reason, skipped the screaming of the diary of Jane from breaking Benjamin.
And we're just we just make fun of them all day. Like, for some reason, they copied our state our station name, copied the voice guide, even have them, a host named Victor who's our who's our morning show host. Like, it's a different Victor. Oh, wow. Same name.
They just copied all, like, all parts of her. So compliment. That's a compliment. Yeah. But, I mean, Dark Void, I mean, the whole album, of course, where do we go from here?
Is that more so, like, a question for you guys as well for, like, after this album, after this tour, like, what's going to happen? I think a little bit. We were in a spot where, you know, I think since COVID, like for us, we we struggled to get, like, back off our feet. It took a few years. And I think, I mean, the last year we've just tried to stay as busy as possible.
We kinda got together. We had lots of conversations together and we all decided we wanna keep touring. And we really hadn't done a lot of that since COVID. And, I think since doing that, we've seen a lot of success. Like it's it's come full circle for us.
So I feel like for for all of us, it's like it's starting to get on the right track again. Yeah. For sure. I think it was just like you say, at that time when we were making the record following that crazy time, I don't know. I think everyone had that question.
You know what I mean? A lot of people a lot of things change for a lot of people. So I think that question can be it can pertain to anything really. Not necessarily mean a band or or or us personally is just a relate to it. Something the fans can connect with as well or anyone, really, that reads it.
Did you guys record the Where Do We Go From Here during COVID, during 2020, or was that just a little bit after? 20 20, but after. We don't we no. Not that one. We've done this one.
Well, I mean, that was all remote, really, wasn't it? We were all connected from our homes and stuff. So You know, I think the last time, we actually had a member of one of you guys on our on our station was when Ben was on talking about our morning show Victor, our morning show host Victor, and he was just talking back and forth about parenting and now he's out he's not being a full time parent. How is is has the dynamic changed at all without him or is it just kind of the same? I mean, aside from the obvious of him not being here, like, we've obviously done that for a long time, many years together and is very different.
Well, that's not to say we don't all we talk to him every day. We always feel speak to him. He's just, you know, he's he's been a dad. Yeah. We're all dads.
We all we all have kids now. Apart from Danny, like, well, we all have kids. So it's, you know, it's one of those reasons that he did I just couldn't even fathom not understanding because Oh, yeah. Yeah. You know, he did it, and it's just a bit different, but we still speak, and everything's good.
You know? Yeah. Yeah. Makes total sense. Now for the we're going back I get it.
I get it. I think he just, you know, I think he just had been wanting to for a while, you know, and I think it was just time for him. Well, I can only imagine, like, being like, you guys being all dads and stuff. It's not easy, man. Being on the road for most of the year, doing all that and, you know Very hard when you got kids.
But, like, after this tour, do you guys plan on just taking, like, one massive break? Or Well, we go to England After this, pretty we have a day at home, and then we go to England. I go straight to England from Cali, and we have 2 shows, and then we have one in Dallas of South by Saw Walk, I think, on 3rd. Yeah. And then we're done for the summer.
Yeah. Oh, good. Rest of summer off. So Oh, nice. Yeah.
That'd be nice. Any vacations planned? Anything like that? Or just had it no. Nothing in the books yet, but there's gonna be some stuff we're gonna do this on.
Like the songwriting process without like, is Ben still a part of that? Or are you guys just kinda, like, letting him be the dad while you guys handle anything new? At the moment, we're just we're just focusing on, getting out on the road and putting on, you know, the best show we can at the moment. And, it's just not really our head's not really in that that that realm at the moment. Like, he just said, it's, you know, it's been a long time doing it with Ben, and now we're not.
We're just kinda really focusing on that. Yeah. So not really many conversations on that front, really. You know? Mhmm.
Yeah. Yeah. Do you guys do anything together outside of music, outside of touring? Like, do you guys hike together? Like, do you We do a lot of drinking.
There you go. Nice. Do you mean like well, now, the 3 well, me, Sam, and Danny now live in the Nashville area. We get to, like, see each other quite often, which is nice. Got James still in Texas, but, yeah, honestly, we we hang out quite frequently.
So Yeah. Do you use that one street in Nashville? I forgot what, like, where Kid Rocks bar is on. Broadway. I tried to avoid Broadway at all costs.
Yeah. Is that where, like, everybody just goes? It's the tourist strip, you know, and it's, like, the capital of, like, for, like, bachelorette parties. It's wild, dude. And, you know, it's crazy because living there is great.
I love the areas. I love where I live, but anytime you have family coming in, they wanna do that. Of course. They kinda get ready. Alright.
I'm going to Broadway. And you tell the people that live there that you go to Broadway. They're all like, good luck. Yeah. And have you guys been in Nashville for a little while now?
I've been there for 2 years. Yeah. 2 years now. Oh, okay. So one of the new guys that moved into the neighborhood?
I am one of those guys. I got ridiculed in Idaho, and I have the California plates. I was Oh, really? Oh, no. Those got changed immediately.
Oh, yeah. I was coming from Arizona. So Okay. You weren't that bad? Becomes newer newer than me.
And John John Danny's the newest. I've, I've only been there a year. So Different areas. I actually used to live there, like, years ago. Yeah.
He was he was the first one to live there. Yeah. Well, it's awesome. Returning. Well, thank you guys really for doing this with me today.
I really appreciate it. Very excited for the show tonight. First time seeing you guys live here or live at all. So, you know, I was there's been previous opportunities, but both my bosses decided to, you know, take advantage of that. They went instead of me and all that.
See, you snagged it. Yeah. I was like, I gotta go for you guys. Memphis May Fire, haven't seen before, Word Alive. That's awesome.
It's a really good show, man. Yeah. It's a it's a cool package. Well, thank you guys. Really I did really appreciate it.
