Billion Dollar Backstory

Panels are weird. Everyone’s trying to look smart without sounding rehearsed.

And somehow you’re supposed to introduce yourself and tell memorable stories in just a matter of minutes.

It’s not easy, and it’s not something you want to wing (especially if you want to make sure your participation is worth your while).

That’s why, in this episode, Stacy’s breaking down her top dos and don’ts for showing up sharp and human on a panel. Whether you’re intro’ing yourself or riffing off someone else’s point, these moves will help you actually make your time on stage count.

You’ll learn:
  • What makes a 90-second intro land
  • How to make a panel feel less like a meeting that should’ve been an email
  • A better way to add to someone else’s point (without just repeating it and blending in)
This is Story Snacks, a bite-sized, jam-packed series for fund managers who are ready to master strategic storytelling in under 20 minutes a week.

[00:01:57] I'm really excited because I'm gonna be on a panel, but [00:02:00] there are five of us and it's only 45 minutes long. So how do I maximize my time up there? Panels, uh, we just did a podcast about this actually, so I'm going to reference the podcast with Dan Mikulski. The second one, the reunion one, which is all about panels.

[00:02:18] He's gotta be in his bonnet about this topic, and, uh, it's a masterclass in how to make panels great. I'm gonna give you some quick snack size tips on what to do if you're on a panel. The first thing is a panel or any kind of speaking engagement is a great place to tell your backstory. Now you're gonna need to tell the short story one.

[00:02:39] Okay? But with that said, I want you to take up space. So when the moderator says, I'm gonna have the panelists introduce themselves, I do not want you to give a one sentence introduction. I do not want you to say, I'm Stacy Haner. I'm the founder of Haner Capital Partners. [00:03:00] Like that's not jazzy. No one really cares about what you've just said right now.

[00:03:04] The reason I'm saying this is because someone on the panel is going to do that, and once that first person does that, everybody else feels like they need to follow suit and say the short one sentence introduction, but not you. Not you, my friend, because you are gonna take up space and tell your short story, 90 seconds with some emotion, with some vulnerability, with a smile on.

[00:03:30] You want people to get your expertise and like while you're on the panel, sure. But more than that, like who you are, be approachable, be fun, be interesting, be engaging. Okay, so you want you to take up space and tell your short story. The second thing on a panel that's important is to riff off of each other.

[00:03:49] Okay? So the, the real value of a panel is in the fact that you have different points of view. From different people. Different people in one [00:04:00] place. So if Mary says something really interesting and I agree with it, and now it's my turn to say something, what doesn't work is if I just pile on. I agree with what Mary said, and let me just say it again, boring.

[00:04:15] Okay. So we don't wanna do that. Better would be, Mary said this great thing. I agree. And I would add this, that, and the other thing. So you're gonna take that idea, that thread and add your unique point of view, add something new. You could also add a challenging point of view. It's a little bit more nuanced and maybe trickier, but you could say, you know, Mary said some really interesting things.

[00:04:43] I often think about this other side. So the idea of a panel is to make it interesting amongst the panelists, not just interesting for the audience to hear one person's point of view in a silo and move to the next. Okay, and the last [00:05:00] one, I sort of referenced this already, but smile, laugh. How many times have you seen a panel where everyone's stone face or resting bitch face and like listening intently?

[00:05:11] I do the same thing. So smile when you're talking. Smile when other people are talking. Smile at the audience when you're just sort of sitting there. Um, panels can be awkward and weird, just like meetings can be awkward and weird. And so how can you take the level of awkwardness and weirdness down? Make it fun, make a joke, laugh, be interesting, not just be like your wicked smart, professional self.

[00:05:38] Hope that helps. Let's be real. No one wakes up and says, I can't wait to build some operational infrastructure today you are here to manage money to build something that lights you up, not chase down reports across five systems and 15 service providers. That's where Ultimas Fund Solutions comes in there.

[00:05:58] Your ops dream [00:06:00] team, consolidating all your middle and back office chaos into one clean, scalable setup, registered funds. Private funds, SMAs, all integrated. One team, one tech platform, one rock solid source of data. But here's the real differentiator service. I know that Fund in a box sounds convenient.

[00:06:24] It's also a box. Know what? You can't put in a box? A human who picks up the phone when you call and need help. Real life people who know your name and your fund and they care about getting it right. Ultimas was built on people doing business with people. You get institutional strength combined with boutique level service without getting stuck in a phone tree of doom.

[00:06:50] If you're ready to simplify scale and start working with a team that feels like an extension of yours, check out billion dollar [00:07:00] backstory.com/ultimas. That's ul. T-I-M-U-S. You've got the investment strategy, the vision, the track record. Now it's time to upgrade the engine behind it all with ultimas.
