Kristin Casey brought crack on Ringo Starr's tour while living with Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh, and Ringo called Betty Ford himself to ask for a bed for her. She turned it down and went home to smoke more. In this addiction recovery interview, the author of Rock Monster: My Life with Joe Walsh tells Austin how it started: a first drink at fourteen, poured by the doctor whose kids she babysat, a full-blown meth addiction within months of moving to Austin, then stripping and heavy drinking.

When Joe got sober, their relationship ended, and Kristin went to Las Vegas with no identity left and tried to drink herself to death. A brutal case of alcohol poisoning in 1997 became her turning point, and a sober fellow stripper who had been saving her a seat sent her to her first meeting. She talks about working the steps straight from the Big Book, making amends for robbing a church at fifteen, her work as a surrogate partner, and, for the first time publicly, a relapse on pharmaceuticals last year after 28 years clean and sober. Today she is married, writing her third memoir, Modern Courtesan, and still leaning on the tools that saved her.
