The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Remembering Janis Joplin 52 years on from her untimely death, and playing all the new indie & underground you can stuff in a two hour set with Danno & Kat Bass providing the usual verbal flubbery.

Show Notes

As broadcast October 4, 2022 with plenty of extra triggeration for your indignation.  Tonight we mark 52 years since Janis Joplin joined the infamous 27 Club, as the famed leading lady of Big Brother & The Holding Company was found dead in an LA hotel after showing up late to wrap her final album.  After that, huge new tunes out this week on the indie vibe, with plenty that maybe shouldn't be played on Tuesdays since the artists are massive commodities, but with the Monday holiday we had to cover as much as we could with the missing chapter.  New tunes from LCD Soundsystem, Paramore, Men I Trust, Stevie Zita, and Lunar Isles are all in there with a lot of other quality, so we recommend diving in head first!

Part 1

Big Brother & The Holding Co – I Need A Man To Love
Frankie Cosmos – FOOF
Raavi – no bodies
LCD Soundsystem – new body rhumba
Lunar Isles – Unwinding
hanbee feat woo! – Kawakawa

Facts
Big Brother & The Holding Co – I Need A Man To Love
- Janis Joplin is found dead at the Landmark Hotel in Los Angeles after a heroin overdose. She was just 27.
- Joplin's road manager, John Cooke, went looking for her when she didn't turn up for a recording session. When there was no answer at her door, he got the key from the front desk and found Joplin.
- Jimi Hendrix died of an overdose just 16 days earlier; in July 1971, Jim Morrison meets a similar fate. All three are 27 when they passed.
Frankie Cosmos – FOOF
- Just out via Sub Pop, and a moniker I’d thought was gone until August of this year.
- Frankie Cosmos aka Greta Kline and her band are out with a new album October 21 called Inner World Peace. This would be their first album in 5 years’ time.
- Kline says of the album it’s both strange and vast while also contained and interior.
Raavi – no bodies
- Formed in 2017 under the moniker Raavi & the Houseplants, Raavi is fronted by queer-desi songwriter Raavi Sita. The band blossomed in the Boston DIY scene before heading to Brooklyn to work on their latest project, It Grows on Trees.
- The band released the ep earlier this year in spring, and this is the first single to drop since the debut EP’s release.
LCD Soundsystem – new body rhumba
- Another first in 5 years is this single from James Murphy & company, who released this over the weekend.
- The song is by director Noah Baumbach, who commissioned the band for the Netflix adaptation of Don DeLillo’s White Noise, which Baumbach directed.
- For fans of the band, this is a great dance punk return to form, with Murphy singing not so fondly of the gig economy and the endless capitalist desire for more everything.
Lunar Isles – Unwinding
- More dreamy guitar-centric surfmatic dream pop from David Skimming, the soloist who goes by Lunar Isles in his indie guise.
- This is the first release since balloons came out in July, and continues a prolific past couple of years that has seen two albums, an EP, and the last two singles drop.
hanbee feat woo! – Kawakawa
- This is the latest from Jeong Hanbee, who is an artist whose parents emigrated to NZ when she was just a year old and is now based there.
- Hanbee’s main instruments are the violin and piano, although she states that the guitar is a work in progress at mastery right now. Still just in her early 20’s, lots of time left to get better on the technique.

BUNGALOW - Seperation Anxiety 3.33
- As a 5 piece indie/dreampop band, Bungalow is the 'brainchild' of Joe Russell-Brown. Continuing to work in his home studio (a bungalow), the band wants to explore different sounds within the realm of indie, and see the limits they can go as a band.
- Today's pick, Seperation Anxiety is actually their first ever single! Even with such a tiresome title as Seperation Anxiety, the song differs to something entirely joyful.

BOYO - Vampire Girl 3.23
- Performing as a solo artist, BOYO is the eclectic, psych-pop brainchild of 22 year-old multi-instrumentalist Robert Tilden.
- The project was born out of the gradual dissolution of Bobby T. and the Slackers, a cult-beloved garage-band that Tilden started at age 16. Since 2016, Tilden has feverishly released a series of albums, EPs, and singles, all varying stylistically.

- The song was accomponied with a music video shot in France, go check it out!.

Stevie Zita - Silver Surfer 2.37
- Toronto based Indie artist Stevie Zita is back at it again with a new track called Silver Surfer.
- With beautiful synth waves washing against the dreamy shore, I can definitely say this is a sweet track; as always, expecting nothing less.
- Passionate with his work, Stevie Zita seems to try taking on new levels as he is gaining major attraction across the globe.

Orchid Mantis - Lucid Dreams 3.48
- Orchid Mantis – also known as the experimental bedroom pop project of Atlanta-based artist Thomas Howard – has returned with the stunning single “Lucid Dreams,” the first from his upcoming seventh album and follow-up to 2021’s Visitations.
- Howard’s signature lo-fi sound has inhabited “the edge between ambient song structures and pop songwriting;” he utilizes obscure samples and unique recording techniques, all of which work to carve a space for nostalgic, earnest narratives concerned with “forgetting,” or the often elusive and fleeting natures of memory, time, and place.

Blue Canopy - Stranger At The Door 3.10
- From Portland, Oregon, Blue Canopy is a solo artist with a total of three singles since 2020, each released each year, including today's pick Stranger At The Door.
- The artist explains, "Stranger At The Door is a song from my dog Banjo's perspective. He's been super anxious and paranoid since we moved to a new house. He's especially worried that there is someone or something dangerous at the front door."
- In translation, he means to say how the artists himself doesn't feel comfortable even in his own home at times because of his social anxiety. He doesn't know what will happen.

MorMor - Chasing Ghosts 3.0
- Another! Toronto based artist MorMor has revealed that his debut album, Semblance, is on the way; out on November 4.
- The Artist has now shared the tracklist for the project, along with the music video for the single “Chasing Ghosts"
- It's said to speak "directly to the ways in which we fall into certain habits that grant only fleeting happiness. It’s an ode to the avoidance of dealing with one’s self; sitting with one’s self is often uncomfortable and can be painful."
- In addition, Early next year, he’ll play a handful of shows around North America in support of the album, too.

Echowave - Hidden Spaces 4.08
- EchoWave is the project of songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Sam Croaker. He has a full band that he has worked with for live shows over the last few years and they put on a tight intense set which apparently amazing to watch.
- The band has moved on from the psychedelic rock of previous releases, towards a more indie pysch pop electronica.
- Their newest single, 'Hidden Spaces' is the first single from the act's new EP ' Makeup' out early next year.

Part 4
Old S Resort - Tribal Maze
Honeywhip - Tag Along
Polycool - Unlike You
Melby - Hammers
Fevre - Where Your Going
Tide Rider ft. Occult X - Mixtape Cassette

Facts
Old S Resort - Tribal Maze 3.07
- Ya know, I never knew I would be in a situation where I go down an odd rabbithole of hotels and resorts in, God knows where, places as I look for a band, which happens to be named Old S Resort.
- Now digging in some more, I have found that-
- 'Old S Resort' is the project of Simen Søgnen, a songwriter from Oslo who was previously played in the band 'Fold', and then the electronic duo 'Norte'.
- With one EP from 2017 and a few singles after, it seems odd how the artist doesn't release more songs! After listening to Tribal Maze, I want hear more!

Honeywhip - Tag Along 2.09
- LA based Duo, Honeywhip is back with a new single, Tag Along.
- And that we shall do. As the Honeywhip way, the track is definitely a bit different. Mixing their experimental style with indie tones really captures a person's interest.
- With a statisfying animation of jellyfish as accomponied as a visualizer, I definitely say tag along and dive into honeywhip.

Polycool - Unlike You 3.44
- With the release of their full-length debut, 2091’s Lemon Lord, French psych pop outfit Polycool quickly established a unique sound
- The French outfit’s latest single “Unlike You” is a swaggering and sultry song centered around glistening synth arpeggios and a Quiet Storm-like groove
- But underneath the sultry facade is something much more uneasy and menacing — the dysfunctional past relationship that you can’t escape from, that you can’t stop obsessively thinking of.

Melby - Hammers 3.41
- With a few weeks to go, Swedish indie psych pop quartet, Melby stop by with one final single before the release of their forthcoming LP, Looks Like a Map.
- Looking into the band, Melby is quite fresh to the indie scene and is getting good attention from our younger crowds.
- Their sound gives nastolgic vibes of 90s synths with modern pop beats.
- I'm quite enjoying them.

Fevre - Where Your Going 3.29
- Okay, again, I am not writing fever incorrectly, and no, I don't have a fever and am wondering if I'm dying, I am looking for artist FEVRE.
- Another Fresh one on the scene, all the information I found was this one quote saying, Forever Underground.
- Seems they are accomplishing their statement, but I gotta say, nice music, me like. Want more.

Tide Rider ft. Occult X - Mixtape Cassette 2.52
- A solo artist from the US, this mystery man has released their newest single, Mixtape Cassette.
- Listening to this, I instantly loved it. I saved it onto my go to playlist right then and there.
- Apparently the song itself is a nostalgic number about a summer fling! Honestly, the concept never gets old.
- I hope to hear more from Tide Rider!
