The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Marking tonight in 1979, when Disco Demolition Night happened at Comiskey Park. Whatever, disco rules, so does Sylvester. Kat Bass joins us once again to share her bevvy of new indie tunes for this week.

Show Notes

As broadcast July 12, 2022 with plenty of disco to treat with tender, loving care.  Tonight we mark the mania that was Disco Demolition Night at Chicago's Comiskey Park in 1979.  As disco faded and the backlash became enormous amongst the rock heads, Steve Dahl made some very weird, quite ugly history when he blew up some "disco" records fans brought in.  But we love disco, so we payed tribute to a trailblazer and revolutionary of the disco and Pride game in Sylvester to start.  After that, Kat Bass is back with all the new indie she liked just out this week, with highlights from Lunar Isles, Minsu, Band Nah, and Zitten on the Korean indie front, and Alvvays, Layzi, and King Princess from further afield on the map.  Of course, that's merely a fraction of the offering for the show's new music.

Part 1
Sylvester – Dance (Disco Heat)
Bliss Samsa – Father Figure
Low Island – Can’t Forget
bed bug guru – Brand New
Welcome Strawberry – You In Your Rare Ugliness
Lunar Isles - Balloons

Facts
Sylvester – Dance (Disco Heat)
- A couple of things to cover for our Tuesday night here on July 12, mainly this is the anniversary of Disco Demolition Night at Comiskey Park, which happened today in 1979.
- The plan is that fans who hate disco can bring in a record to blow up between games during a doubleheader between the White Sox and Detroit Tigers, but thousands upon thousands beyond the team’s expectations show up to the game.
- Local radio DJ Steve Dahl goes through with the demolition and blows up the disco records, but mayhem ensues with fans rushing the field and rioting, totally tearing up the field of play.
- Thus, we pay tribute to Disco Demolition Night tonight by playing a tune from the African-American LGBTQ revolutionary that is Sylvester, because disco does not suck, but demolition night surely did. There’s a great podcast documentary on Sylvester on Spotify called Sound Barrier if you wanna check that out. One of our all-time heroes here at The Drop, may Sylvester rest in power supreme.
Bliss Samsa – Father Figure
- This is an amazing new tune from Bliss Samsa to keep it in a warped disco & funk/lo-fi 80’s kind of vibe after the opener tonight.
- This is an artist we’ve been paying attention to for a good bit now, but just not a lot of biographic info. This latest one is just perfect for summer, so do check the rest of the burgeoning discography.
Low Island – Can’t Forget
- Big news with this release that dropped last week, as the British quartet announced their sophomore album Life In Miniature with the single and video release.
- If you’re excited about the album, you’ll have to wait a good bit as it doesn’t drop until Nov 4th. The song itself is about the headiness of youth and the fear of growing up, according to the band.
bed bug guru – Brand New
- This is a very new band and is in fact their debut single.
- The group is a trio made up of former members of the band Hensley, and they are out of the swamp itself aka Gainesville, FL.
Welcome Strawberry – You In Your Rare Ugliness
- Amazing band right here, usually in the more shoegaze realm of things, but this one is truly different vs past work.
- The band out of Oakland, CA will release their eponymous debut album on September 2, which was announced with this new tune. Kind of a slower, more dreampop bit of shoegaze right here, but the roots are still audible in the tune.
Lunar Isles – Balloons
- Interesting tune right here, right out of Cheongju-si here in Korea.
- The artist is not Korean however, but rather Scotland, true name David Skimming. Skimming describes the Lunar Isles sound as dreamy surf pop, and whatever, sign me up and float me away is all I gotta say.

Part 2
Minsu ft. BIG NAUGHTY - Friendzone
easy life & BENEE - OTT
Sleeping Jesus - New Years
Alvvays - Pharmacist
bb sway & Basile Petite - Your Type
Trace Decay ft. Lucille Two - Radicalize

Facts
Minsu ft. BIG NAUGHTY - Friendzone 3.43
South Korean indie-pop singer Minsu has released their double-track single, Friendzone last Friday.
Her approach to unfolding complex relationships shows once again in both songs, each separately inspired by latin pop and gospel.
Our first track, Friendzone, can be mistaken to be themed as about a love triangle, however it really implies how friendships can have enough intensity that could confuse you for it to be romance. That's a BIG Oof.

easy life & BENEE - OTT 2.38
Easy Life have shared a new single called ‘OTT’ featuring New Zealand singer BENEE.
The track is the latest preview of the Leicester band’s upcoming second album ‘Maybe In Another Life’, which is due out next month.
Now OTT is an abbreviation for Over The Top, and our artists today are trying to say to those who are OTT to maybe just… keep it down a notch?
People are having such a nerve wrecking time, that they just need to chillax. Think of themselves once in a while.

Sleeping Jesus - New Years 4.41
Continuing after their previous banger, Outside, Sleeping Jesus has given us their 3rd single from their forthcoming debut album Leave The Party Early, out July 25.
From Minnesota, Sleeping Jesus gives us some Holy and groovy indie dream pop bops to really relax ourselves in to.

Alvvays - Pharmacist 2.04
Canadian pop group Alvvays have announced that they will be releasing their next album Blue Rev in October.
While still far away, they’ve shared a video for the first single “Pharmacist”. It’s been five years since the last album and they now have a new drummer and bass player onboard.
Blue Rev was recorded in a different way to previous records, where the arrangements have been layered on top of basic live takes of each number. This creates a dense and lush sound, as you can hear on the shoegazey single.

bb sway & Basile Petite - Your Type 4.01
London-based artist bb sway has teamed up with French bassist Basile Petite for the new single ‘Your Type’,
the duo said in a statement, “‘Your Type’ is a dreamy number… We wrote it as an anthem for the swooners, and as an ode to OutKast’s iconic song ‘Prototype"
And as in swooners, will this mean the ones who are swoon, or the ones who swoon others???

Trace Decay ft. Lucille Two - Radicalize 3.14
Meanjin-based electro-pop artist Trace Decay is today returning with his second release of the year, bringing forth his darkly seductive new single Radicalize feat. Lucille Two.
The artist explains, “‘Radicalize’ is about the crippling self doubt and existential fear that sets in when trying to uphold how people perceive you as both an artist and human being… it's an impossible task to juggle and leaves very little space to be who you want to be."
That's, alot of responsibility I'm detecting there.

Part 3
King Princess - Change the Locks
Soft Velvet Lounge - Homecoming
Glaze - Wave Runner
Band Nah - 1+1
Scary Pockets ft. Kenton Chen - Young and Beautiful
Pine Barons - BABY BLUE

Facts
King Princess - Change the Locks 4.30
The genre-blurring pop star’s latest single is the fourth preview of their forthcoming second album, ‘Hold On Baby’, which is due to be released on July 29.
Change The Locks’ was co-written with The National’s Aaron Dessner at his home studio in upstate New York.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, King Princess said someone in the studio told them that the song sounded like “menstruating at Lilith Fair”. And apparently that's what she was going for!

Soft Velvet Lounge - Homecoming 3.25
Today we got a fresh new debut album, Life of the Party, by Soft Velvet Lounge.
Consisting of 8 tracks, the album brings us to those days of when all you can think is the summer heat, fun, and love.
Homecoming describes the longing of a special somebody. Everything they do reminds them of the person, and it's just too hard to move on.

Glaze - Wave Runner 2.53
From Austin, Texas, Glaze is a indie postpunk band that serves us some major chill vibes with their latest single, wave runner.
The song itself is quite dreamy and has a very calm tone to it. However, the image the band portrays is a different story.
Looking through their social media, you can see the trio is awfully immersed into 2000s media.
Handheld homemade music videos, referencing the matrix, and how could I forget their seemingly Microsoft edited vaporwave cover photo for our newest track Wave Runner.
I suggest you look them up when you can.

Band Nah - 1+1 3.15
Band Nah or 나상현씨밴드 is a South Korean Indie rock band that have been releasing music since 2019.
Today, they're back with a new summer single called 1+1.
Reminiscing of 2000s Highteen guitar pop, Band Nah expresses how everything comes to an end eventually, but doesn't necessarily disappear. They are left as memories, and everyone should try to have more for their own sake.
They hope for others to make memories with the help of their latest single 1+1.

Scary Pockets ft. Kenton Chen - Young and Beautiful 3.11
Scary Pockets is a indie funk band based in LA that has recently released a cover album called , JEFF.
The reason behind the Title? Unknown, but the music masks the mystery enough. Within this album we can find covers of iconic summer tunes such as, Closer, Permission to Dance, Issues, and a few more.
Young and Beautiful is a piece by Lana Del Rey back from 2013.
With Kenton Chen's majestic jazz vocals, we find ourselves in an entirely new song.

Pine Barons - BABY BLUE 5.52
Pine Barons has given us their latest tribute album, I LOVE FISH.
Now, During the mixing process of Pine Barons' last album, Mirage on the Meadow, frontman and Keith Abrams stumbled upon the music of cult favorite Japanese band, Fishmans (active throughout the late 80’s and 90’s) and fell in love with their peerless mix of dream pop, psychedelic rock, trip-hop and reggae.
With the help of a Japanese-speaking friend, came up with lyrical English interpretations of the late Shinji Sato’s words. After Sato’s copyright successor passed along his blessing to move forward, I LOVE FISH was officially born.

Part 4
Cuco - Aura
Rothy - Changed Number
Fiji Blue - Dance When You Cry
Layzi - Shop Around
Jack Landess - Sun's Out
Zitten 짙은 - Summer Night

Facts
Cuco - Aura 3.27
Ahead of the release of his new album Fantasy Gateway, dropping on July 22nd, Cuco has shared the new song “Aura”.
The Spanglish track finds Cuco longing for a lover as he weaves between English and Spanish throughout the song.
The forthcoming album precedes his North American tour that begins this August. The headline tour commences in Phoenix on August 14th and wraps up in Dallas on September 2nd. So if you're near by and interested, go check him out!

Rothy - Changed Number 3.28
Rothy (로시) is a South Korean solo singer working under Dorothy Company.
Today's track, Changed Number, is her seventh single to date.
Continuing from her previous single BEE, Rothy is giving a different look to her fans as she writes and produces the singles on her own.
Changed Number is a diss track to those who regret breaking up with them. Saying, "Oh, you miss me? Too bad, I've changed my number. It's too late" I would love some of that confidence!

Fiji Blue - Dance When You Cry 2.52
Released on the first of July, Fiji Blue has given their latest EP, I Loved You, What Happened?.
The EP consist of seven tracks, all of which tell their own unique story of love and complicated yet beautiful aftermath.
Dance When You Cry is a song telling you, you're not alone. Youre emotions may be all over the place, but it's okay. It's all you and do whatever you want.

Layzi - Shop Around 3.00
Layzi caught our ears with the heavenly slacker vibes on her latest offering, “Shop Around.” Relationship anxiety is no joke, especially when you’re worried about a partner looking around for a potential new toothbrush buddy.
Layzi channels her nervousness into a surprisingly laid-back bedroom-pop jam, pairing lo-fi study beatz energy with heavenly vocals and a monster chorus hook.

Jack Landess - Sun's Out 4.57
Emerging from Nashville, Jack Landess started writing music to share his journey as an undergraduate, during his first semester at Belmont University.
As the artist described: “I was super nervous about making friends and leaving everything I knew”. Thankfully, this is how Jack has become the musical artist we hear today.
With Sun's Out, He's given us a song to jam out to as the Summer Sun has come out to scorch us with it's heat.

Zitten 짙은 - Summer Night 3.37
Zitten (짙은) is a South Korean singer-songwriter who has gained the nickname “Honey Voice” because of his attractive dark vocals.
Not used to writing music along with the seasons, the artist found himself blinded by the sunlight and standing in the summer heat.
So, he decided to write a 4 track album called summer in Hopes to bring happiness and make memories to the ones who listen.
