The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Wishing all of our Jewish friends worldwide a most Joyous Hannukah for this year to start, then getting down to all the new tunes out this weekend while wishing fond farewells to Aline, who heads back to Belgium for the holidays the next couple of months.

Show Notes

As broadcast November 29, 2021 with plenty of extra light for your podcast menorah lighting.  Tonight we open the show wishing a Happy Hannukah to all of our Jewish friends, artists, and supporters of the show.  The Festival of Lights kicked off yesterday, to be followed by "eight crazy nights," as Adam Sandler once put it.  After the opening it's two hours of new tunes just out over the past week, with cuts from Kali Uchis, AURORA, and Montell Fish being highlights in our first hour, and then we have Aline Verduyn in the studio for one final hurrah before she does her exams and heads to Belgium for a couple months over the holidays.  It was a short run, but she has been a fantastic weekly contributor so hopefully we can also collab when she returns.

It is 20 hours past midnight on a sunny & cold one here in our fair city of light as we wind down to the end of November, so with the beginning of a new work week it’s time to let the new muses come out & dance tonight. And this evening’s Monday square dance is marked on the poster of spacetime as November 29, 2021. This is Danno ready with the cue from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Of course, with us starting to stretch into December, the volume of new music just out is a little scant but there’s still plenty to go through in both hours tonight, and in our first we have new tunes from Benny Sings, Kali Uchis, and an interesting rock tune to finish featuring none other than Idris Elba of all people. For our Popcast 2nd hour, we have lots of new & recent releases to go through with Aline Verduyn, but it is with a bit of a misty eye that we note this will be her last appearance on the show as she’s heading back to Belgium for the holiday break. So tonight we’ll bid Aline fond goodbyes as she did a tremendous job on the show for the short time she was with us. That being duly noted, we start everything for tonight with our TIGHT (or) feature to get the history in, and we must note that the Jewish festival of Hannukah is upon us for this year, so with the warmest of hearts we send wishes of a happy Hannukah to all of our Jewish friends, artists, and supporters to start the show. THIS is The Drop.
Adam Sandler – The Hannukah Song (Live)
The Drop has lit the torch on our New Muses Monday weekly kickoff after the last new music release weekends of November 2021. Danno here, going through all the new stuff for our first hour, and for those just joining us Aline Verduyn will be leaving us to head back to her home in Belgium for the holidays so this will in fact be her final appearance on the show tonight to close out the month. Of course, with Thanksgiving in the US being celebrated last week, we must thank you for joining us this evening, fair listener. You’re the best.
To start, as Thanksgiving does indeed mark the beginning of the holiday season, we began things wishing all of our Jewish friends a happy Hannukah, which also kicked off over the weekend. That was then-SNL comedian Adam Sandler with The Hannukah Song, a cheeky well wishing to all of his fellow Jews world-wide during the festival of light.
Now, as that song amply demonstrates, one of the best guessing games or drinking games if you’d like to roll that way is guessing whether or not famous people are in fact Jewish. There’s always unexpected names on the list if you’re not so initiated, and it’s both fun and a good learning experience even for Jewish people I’ve played the game with.
Now, for those unfamiliar Hannukah is a commemoration of the Israelites recovering Jerusalem from the Selucid Empire waaaaay back in the 2nd century BCE. Israel had been subjugated by the Selucids and revolted, taking back their holy city and rededicating the 2nd Temple.
The festival of lights is celebrated for 8 days and nights, with the menorah or 9-pronged candlelabra having a new candle lit on each night. So, happy Hannukah to all who are celebrating it this week!
So, now that we have the ancient living history out of the way along with some laughs, let’s get some of the new music out for tonight. Up next we have Kurtis Wells, Benny Sings, and DJ Khaled to give a whirl, and we’ll discuss further after each candle is lit. THIS is The Drop on your new Muses Monday night.
__________
Back on The Drop after our first triad of new tunes for the week, and while the weekend was a little light on volume for new music there is still some good new quality to get through tonight. For our 2nd hour Popcast feature, our main lady Aline Verduyn will be adding her bits of new pop starting at the top of the hour, but it is her final appearance on the program with a long holiday jaunt coming up, so we wish her all the best as we’ll have a new guest host starting next week. For now through, we go to the recap, that was...
Kurtis Wells – Forever Young (…a rather new artist here who’s gained quite a following here in 2021. Kurtis is of Trinidadian background and lived in the US growing up, but now calls Berlin home. Speaking of home, the artist says that the longing for it is precisely the driving force behind his music.)
Benny Sings feat JONES – Look What We Do (…the Dutch artists now residing in LA Benny Sings has a new mixtape ready to drop in just under two weeks’ time. Beat Tape II as it is called is ready to drop on December 10, and this is most likely the final teaser single prior to release, and that drops in full courtesy of Stones Throw.)
AURORA – Midas Touch (…this tune released last Wednesday simultaneous with the third teaser for the final season of the American action drama series HANNA, which appears on Amazon Prime. The song is about a sad man who is a terrible lover that takes place in a beautiful house that is empty & lifeless.)
Now, we’ve got a couple more tunes to rock here in part 1 tonight before the jump, and we’re going to get some Latin spice going here. Up next is Kali Uchis and Ozuna with a cut that is both in English & Spanish called Another Day In America, and then we have Sech & DJ Khaled with a tune called Borracho or Drunk, and that’s gonna do it for the end of the first fourth. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
Kali Uchis with Ozuna – Another Day In America
Sech feat DJ Khaled – Borracho

The Drop commits to the verbal tenacity once again after the first jump and the start of the 2nd stanza this evening. Happy holidaze to all of you out there, Drop Gangsters (KOR)? Danno here on the mic, showin’ ya what it’s like from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju. So, we just began the 2nd quarter of our game of audio mirrors with a pair of rather pensive new joints, that was...
Nell Smith feat The Flaming Lips – No More Shall We Part (…interesting selection of Nick Cave covers right here that just dropped over the weekend called Where The Viaduct Looms. If you’re not familiar, Nell Smith is only 13 years of age, and teamed up with the psychedelic band after meeting them three years ago because she was a regular at their shows & wore parrot costumes. Little did they know at the time that the little bird could really sing, huh?)
rosi – Here (…very little info on this group which is admittedly just starting out. All we can glean from their bio is they are a male-female duo, but this is an interesting off the beaten path kind of repetitive psyche track that I wanted to give a spin this evening, and their first few singles are getting some good plays so interesting to see what they do moving forward.)
Now as usual around this time of the show, just a real quick reminder to follow us on social media we are @gfnthedrop, which is also a great way to keep in contact with me & the staff here at Drop Central free & easy & world-wide. Via SMS just contact us if you’re local meaning here in the Republic of Korea, which can be done via #9870 (it’s 50 won for a regular message, 100 won for a longer one). Weeknight broadcasts are available for free download & subscription via our podcast as well once we go off the air, just search The Drop with Danno or The Drop on GFN and you should be able to find us on any service you use or via simple internet search.
Now moving onto the next block we have another trio of sound grips to grapple with, and next up we have what’s probably my tune of the week by Montell Fish, then we have cuts from Softcult & Caroline Loveglow, all of which we’ll discuss further after the burn dies out. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday.
___________
Back on The Drop tonight as we stretch towards the end of this evening’s first half. How’s it going, Drop Gangsters (KOR)? Danno here holding it down as always between 8 & 10pm here on GFN, and Aline will be in for her final rendition of the Popcast 2nd hour tonight as she’s getting ready to head home to Belgium for the holidays after exams. For right now though, before we start to cry, let’s get to the notes on the floated notes in that last block. That was…
Montell Fish – Destroy Myself Just For You (…this is an artist in his early 20’s who has been on a mission since making his debut just a few years ago, releasing 19 projects in that time. Stating his mission as making music to glorify God, this latest single from Fish is just something else. Big up to the young man, keep following your passion.)
Softcult – Perfect Blue (…this is the latest single from the band’s forthcoming Year of The Snake EP. The duo of Phoenix & Mercedes out of Canada explain that this song is about the negative and unhealthy dynamic that their previous label created for them, forcing them to change themselves in order to please the label heads. Year of The Snake is out via their new label in February on the 8th of next year.)
Caroline Loveglow – Zenosyne (…this a project based out of LA, and her latest single on 100% Electronica run by George Clanton. The artist says that even before the pandemic, she had a habit of spending long nights alone making music and getting lost in her head.)

Now heading towards the end of our first half tonight, we’re gonna pump up the vibe a bit with a rock tune and then a house tune. First up is Lime Cordiale featuring Idris Elba on a rather wild lo-fi rock cut called What’s Not To Like, and then we have a Redinho remix of Sans Soucis’ original called Games, and that will be it for the first 57 this evening. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday and we are at halftime..
Lime Cordiale feat Idris Elba – What’s Not To Like
Sans Soucis – Games (Redinho remix)

Miley Cyrus has laughed off her lack of Grammy nominations for 'Plastic Hearts'.
The 29-year-old star failed to receive a single nod for her 2020 rock and country record – which was number two on the US Billboard 200, and featured collaborations with Dua Lipa ('Prisoner'), Billy Idol ('Night Crawling'), and Joan Jett ('Bad Karma').
And sharing an article of 30 artists who haven't received nominations, she quipped on Twitter: "In good company", along with the metal horns emoji.

2. Nirvana – Nevermind (Remastered)
Rel: 1991 – remastered
An amendment to the sexual exploitation lawsuit brought against Nirvana over the 'Nevermind' album cover alleges that the baby was styled and photographed as Playboy founder Hugh Hefner.
Spencer Elden was four months old when he was shot in a swimming pool reaching out for a dollar bill on a fishing line for the classic 1990 rock record's artwork.
Now aged 30, Elden has claimed his parents didn't sign a release authorising the use of his image on the cover, and he has also alleged that the nude image is child pornography.

Rel: Nov 18
FKA Twigs and British MC Central Cee have linked up for a new song, “Measure of a Man,” which will appear on the soundtrack for the upcoming spy flick, The King’s Man.
“Measure of a Man” feels like a classic Bond theme — sweeping strings, a blast of brass toward the end — but balanced with contemporary drums and synths.

Central Cee rolls through his verse, while FKA Twigs goes fully into crooner mode with a mighty vocal performance.

3. KAYTRANADA, H.E.R - Intimidated
Rel: Nov 19
Kaytranada's "Intimidated" EP brings the best out of his collaborators.
This year, Kaytranada scored himself 2 well-deserved Grammys for his exceptional work on his sophomore studio album Bubba, and although his output has been frustratingly limited in 2021, the Canadian artist returns with a brief, yet infectious new EP.
Serving as his only other solo release this year aside from the one-off single "Caution," Intimidated is a three-track project that is laced with three hype-worthy collaborations. (Thundercat, Mach-Hommy)

Over the past few years “Somebody To Use” has become a staple in Alesso’s set despite being unreleased, and the toxic mix is a real treat. While the original track tells the story of a quick love rendezvous, the toxic mix gives us a totally different deep, dark club vibe.
