The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Our delayed to COVID Round Trip season premiere is finally here, and we could not be more excited to welcome the lovely and incredibly fun Dunia Aljawad back full-time as our weekly guest! Venezuela awaits. #LetsGo

Show Notes

As broadcast March 30, 2022 with plenty of llanos if things are getting a little too plain on your podcast dives.  Tonight we took another jaunt to Venezuela, this time with our lovely new guest Dunia as our new weekly travel companion.  Dunia originally hails from Iraq but is now a Korean citizen, and we are just thrilled to finally have her as a regular contributor.  The trip to Caracas highlights a lot of music regular listeners will be familiar with, but if it's your first time, the country with all the beautiful people indeed boasts an equally impressive portfolio of gorgeous tunes both old and new.

I.
It is 20 hours past midnight as these parts start to bloom with pink flower wonderment and spring begins to peak. But tonight as we do every Wednesday night it is time to take you on a trip and we are heading for Venezuela on this week’s flight, and we are round trip world premiered for season 7 as March 30, 2021. This is Danno ready as always to travel without moving from studio 2 GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Tonight begins the reign of the fabulous Dunia Aljawad on our Wednesday night travel showcase for season 7, and the lovely native of Iraq and Korean citizen will be joining us weekly moving forward. We had a bit of a delay last week due to our friend having a case of the covid and the quarantine, but we are ready to go wheels up to Caracas at 9pm sharp tonight aboard flight TD067. Now of course, before we begin the sojourn up to our flight from ICN tonight, we have to get in the history and cometh the travel, cometh The Empress who’s hitting the road on tour in the US starting this week, and we’ll talk about that after we hear Flore and company reign on a virtual world tour from 2020. Is this voodoo? No, I’m afraid not. This is The Drop.
L'Imperatrice – Voodoo (Virtual World Tour 2020)

The Drop is on the bus & on our way to the airport tonight for our Round Trip Wednesday, great as always to have you fly with us. Flight TD067 takes off for the Bolivar Republic of Venezuela this evening with our new guest Dunia Aljawad joining us starting this week, and as always we are excited to go into the sky and explore this blue marble we all call home tonight. But anyway, what’s up, Drop Gangsters (Korean)? Danno here, as always whether here or there or anywhere really, and we just started with our TIGHT (or) feature to start the fun, that was L’Imperatrice with a live version of Voodoo, which came out on their latest album Tako Tsubo.
This was done as part of a Virtual World Tour back in summer 2020 when all of Europe and basically the world was in total lockdown, so the oh-so alluring Flore Benguigui and her band decided to do a one hour TV special in France.
Now, as to the history we are living it this week with The Empress, as our dear friend Kate Bollinger hits the road in America for 10 dates starting next week. This would be the first time L’Imperatrice has been able to tour on their last album, which is fantastic if you haven’t taken a listen.
Kate Bollinger drops her latest EP April 22, and we are welcoming her to the show on that date as our guest artist selector. The EP is called Look At It In The Light, and I really REALLY wish I could go check this tour out as it’s heading through Chicago, but oh well.
Once again, Kate Bollinger is our guest April 22 so do lock that one in. She always has a killer set of tunes lined up to play.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast details, etc.
So let’s get to the warm-up for our Round Trip to Venezuela this evening, and we’ll stay in the 70’s to begin things then go a bit more contemporary to finish the upcoming audio triangle. Up next is Vytas Banner to be followed by Un Dos Tres y Fuera along with Manybeat, and we shall discuss all of it after they do their thing. This is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday to Venezuela.
_________

The Drop returns and we’re about to disembark at the terminal but still got a few miles to go. Danno here studio 2 GFN HQ checking the mic & tunes every night from 8 to 10pm. Our new weekly guest Dunia Aljawad joins us aboard flight TD067 bound for Caracas, Venezuela and we just started getting familiar with the destination tonight through some old psyche & more contemporary dance music, so let’s get to the liner notes...
Vytas Brenner – Araguaney (….)
Un Dos Tres y Fuera – Machu Picchu (…both of these first two tunes we played tonight are from a great compilation album from Soul Jazz Records called VENEZUELA 70: Cosmic Visions of a Latin American Earth. Latin America had an amazing rock & psyche movement going on in the 1960’s and 1970’s with Venezuela being no exception. Do check that comp in full if you’d like to hear more.)
Manybeat – Manao (…the artist here is a veteran DJ out of Caracas who has been making well…many beats since he was 17, so for over 30 years now. His sound is a combination of some more traditional sounds one would find in Venezuela along with funk, soul & house music.)
Now let’s fit in a couple more contemporary bands before we hit the jump to part 2. Up next is Los Amigos Invisibles or the invisible friends, and this is their latest called EH EH OH OH, after which we’ll follow with another FIFA hit and La Vida Boheme or The Bohemian Life and a tune called Hands Up or Manos Arriba, and that is going to do it for the first quarter of the game tonight. THIS is The Drop ready to check in for our Round Trip to Caracas.
Los Amigos Invisibles feat C-Funk & Silverio Lozada – EH EH OH OH
La Vida Boheme – Manos Arriba

II.
The Drop has arrived for check-in and doing the usual wait with the bags and being in line presently. Danno here ready to check in for flight TD067 tonight on our round trip to Venezuela, and our new weekly contributor Dunia Aljawad joins us for the first time tonight as our official weekly contributor, although you probably remember her from her time covering for Lizz in February while Mizz Kalo was on vacation. We just started with some very tradicional canciones right there, so let’s get to the informaciones...
Luis Silva – Como No Voy A Decirlo (…this tune the title of which means How I’m Not Gonna Say It. A type of traditional tune from Venezuela called llanos, which means simply plains as they are from the flat agricultural area of the country originally. As we’ll discuss further in hour 2, llanos are truly Venezuela’s stamp on the music world.)
Simon Diaz – Caballo Viejo (…another llano about an old horse right here, and for those curious as to the background of the artist, Simon Diaz is probably the most influential musician and composer of all time from Venezuela. As we’ll discuss in hour 2 with Dunia, this guy is the main force in bringing the llanos sound to the world.)

Moving along SM, #9870, podcast let us know …
So we’ll continue to keep the vibe easy but switch it up a bit to a more modern era. Up next is indie stalwart Davendra Banhart followed by Americania and Simon Grossmann, all of which we’ll talk further once we’ve let them walk around in the air. THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday to Caracas.
_________
The Drop reverberates again on the mic and we are into the final airbreak of our first 57 tonight. Danno here, checking my stuff at the departure gate prior to taking off for tropical Caracas on flight TD 048, which will go wheels up to start our 2nd hour with our new weekly guest Dunia Aljawad. However we still have a few notes on the notes to note prior to in flight cocktail hour, so let’s get to that...
Davendra Banhart – Abre Las Manos (…open your hands says the song, and this is the US-based indie darling doing his thing on his 2019 album entitled Ma. Banhart was raised in Venezuela and is just a top-notch indie folk musician in the world right now.)
Americania – Emilia (…a group formed by Italo Pizzolante, Alvaro Casas and Armando Añez is a necessary inclusion on that list. With only two albums, the group left a deep mark on the entire alternative scene in the country, particularly thanks to their second album 'La Fiesta Del Rey Drama', on which Emilia appeared.)
Simon Grossmann – Luna Llena (…the song title here is Full Moon, and is from the Miami-based Venezuelan singer-songwriter’s debut album called Ciclo or Cycle. We’ll talk more about Grossmann on the other side of the hour with Lizz Kalo while also featuring his more recent stuff.)
Okay, so that’s final call to board so I gotta boogie, but there’s plenty of time to wait in line for like the 5th time. Up next we got a pair of tunes more in the reggaeton area with ADSO up first on a cut called Como Si Nada, or like nothing, and to finish Mau y Ricky featuring Maria Becerra with a cut called Mal Acostumbrao, or poorly accustomed. THIS is The Drop now boarding flight TD067 on your Round Trip to Venezuela season premiere with Dunia Aljawad and it is halftime.
ADSO – Como Si Nada

Say Sue Me – Around You

Sobrenatural - La Melodia Perfecta
• Latin pop duo consisting of the Martinez brothers with a well known radio hit called "Ya No Me Enamoro" and a viral YouTube song called "Juntos."
• The group was originally called Gio, Gabo & Clan La Melodía Perfecta before a third member left the group in mid-2015 for personal commitments. “Sobrenatural” is their first single as a duo.

Danny Ocean – Me Rehuso
- A real well-travelled guy right here with an interesting background, having traveled all over the world with his writer mother during his younger years growing up living in Japan, the Antilles, and Namibia.
- Ocean started out in 2009 when he started his YouTube channel, and has gained popularity from that, and this cut appeared on his 2019 LP 54+1.

Moliendo Café - Hugo Blanco
• popular Venezuelan musician. He is best known as the author of "Moliendo Café" and other written in 1958 when Hugo Blanco was only 18 years old, has become one of the most recognized Venezuelan songs in the world.
• After he composed it in 1958, and it was an immediate success, not only in Venezuela but also in the rest of the world, believe that this song has an enormous amount of cover throughout the world (there is even a Japanese cover!)

Canelita Medina – Tanto y Tanto
• Released in 1980 by Rogelia Medina known as Canelita Medina, a legendary Venezuelan salsa singer from port of La Gueira

Mis Ilusiones - SanLuis, Feat. Voz Veis and Apache
• It is an authentic musical treat filled with so much love and care, SanLuis an extremely talented singer of an extremely charming voice actually proposed to sing a song that could display the greatness of a country that is not going through its best moment with musical group Voz Veis and rapper Apache.
• Venezuela’s political crisis has caused indignation among many, but during times of turmoil, Venezuelan artists — including actors, musicians and athletes — united in a powerful music video to send a message of hope and unity.

SanLuis feat Chino and Nacho – Se Acabo

Rumba Hoy - Gustavo Elis
• Elis was part of the musical duo Gustavo & Rein. After duo Gustavo & Rein split up, both Gustavo Elis and Sixto Rein have been building solo careers. “Rumba Hoy,” Gustavo’s single released in April, was produced by Luny Tunes and is a great dance track.
• Gustavo Elis is a famous Pop Singer, who was born in Venezuela. Latin pop and reggaeton singer with singles called “Novios,” “Mujer de mi vida,” “Te Extrano” and “Cinturita” who has also performed a duet alongside Sixto Rodriguez. He is a social media phenomenon as well with 2.2 million followers on Instagram.

Rawayana – HIGH feat Apache
- This is a band out of the capital Caracas who formed in 2007.
- The band combines several styles, notably reggae and funk which you can definitely hear in that tune along with more local flavors like salsa and reggaeton. They call their style “trippy pop,” which might sound a little too obvious on the drug influences, but I don’t think they’re really hiding that with this tune, which dropped on their 2016 LP Trippy Caribbean.

“El Alma Llanera” - Simón Díaz
● Simon was a Venezuelan singer and Grammy Award-winning composer of Venezuelan music. Díaz endeavored to recover the folklore and musical traditions of the llanos, the Venezuelan plains.
● El Alma Llanera In itself, a classic and of course the iconical voice of one of the most famous singers of Venezuela has served to give it the notoriety and recognition it deserves. It had been composed by Pedro Elias Gutierrez in 1914, and due to its lyrics is considered the second national anthem of Venezuela by popular petition

Cecelia Todd – Pajarillo Popular
- This is a pretty amazing album from 1979 called Acceso VIP.
- The artist made her debut in 1970, and is still active today at over 70 years of age. She mainly works in traditional sounds of Venezuela, mainly a type of music called cuatro along with other areas like cumbia and salsa.

Korean song
iKON - ‘사랑을 했다(LOVE SCENARIO)
• iKON is a South Korean boy band formed in 2015 by YG Entertainment, consisting of six members
• They were first introduced through the reality show WIN: Who Is Next as Team B in which they lost to Team A (who later became WINNER). Later, they appeared again on the show MIX & MATCH.
Say Sue Me – Around You
- Just out Friday is the latest from Busan-based indie darlings Say Sue Me.
- For those unfamiliar the band led by Choi Su Mi (get it?), are now a leading Korean indie band who mainly gained popularity abroad prior to getting recognition here.
- With the song and accompanying video the band announced a new album out on May 13 called The Last Thing Left.
