Cease Striving: Learning to Trust God Instead of Forcing Life
Do you find it hard to obey God?
Hard to trust Him with everything?
Whew… girl, that’s me.
I have struggled with trust issues for most of my life. I wanted to obey God. I wanted to follow Him. But self-kept getting in the way.
I found myself constantly striving.
Striving to get somewhere.
Striving to become successful.
Striving to make things happen.
Always pushing. Always trying.
But somehow… still feeling like I was getting nowhere.
Maybe you know that feeling. (Music)

What Striving Really Means
When you look up the word strive, it means to try very hard… to exert yourself… to struggle intensely to achieve a goal.
It’s making a strong, determined effort, often over a long period of time — sometimes even against difficulties.
And while effort isn’t always bad, striving can become dangerous when we begin trying to run life in our own strength instead of God’s.

The Scripture
There’s a verse that changed how I began looking at this struggle.
Psalm 46:10 says:
“Be still and know that I am God.”
Another translation says:
“Cease striving.”
That means stop fighting.
Stop worrying.
Stop trying to manage everything yourself.
It’s an invitation from God to trust His sovereignty and His protection.
The word strive in this passage actually comes from a Hebrew word that means to relax… to let go… to sink down.
Think about that.
God is literally saying:
Relax. Let go. I’ve got this.
Letting God Fight the Battles
God is saying come rest in His power.
To allow Him to fight the battles that we keep trying to fight ourselves.
But let’s be honest for a minute…
That’s hard.
Especially when you’re used to doing everything on your own.
Especially when trusting people hasn’t always worked out.
But trusting God is different.
He is Omnipresent, Omniscient and He has everything under control.”
Why We Can’t Do Life Without Him
The truth is, our strength comes from Him.
Jesus said in John 15: 5 that we are the branches and He is the vine.
Branches cannot survive if they disconnect from the vine.
We cannot produce fruit.
We cannot sustain ourselves.
We cannot truly grow… apart from Him.
Sometimes we come to God feeling like withered branches.
Tired.
Worn down.
Exhausted from trying to carry life ourselves.
But God wants to take those weary branches and nourish them.
He strengthens us.
He restores us.
He gives us the life we can’t produce on our own.
Grace for the Process
And listen…
You’re going to make mistakes.
You’re going to try to take control again sometimes.
Like hello, preaching to the choirs over here, cause I know I’m guilty
We’re human.
But thank God for repentance.
Thank God for grace.
Grace allows us to get back up and keep moving forward.
Being Led by the Spirit
Romans 8:14 says:
“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.”
God doesn’t expect you to figure everything out by yourself.
He gave us the Holy Spirit to guide us.
To help us.
To correct us.
To lead us step by step.
Practical Ways to Practice Trust
Here are a few simple ways to begin practicing trust with God.
First, pray often.
Not just when something goes wrong.
Invite God into your everyday decisions.
Second, like I mentioned, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you.
He is your helper.
Third, consider fasting.
If you’re able, try fasting one day a week.
Maybe a 24-hour fast.
But if that feels like too much, start small.
Fast one meal.
Fast lunch or dinner.
Fasting helps quiet our flesh and makes room for God to speak more clearly.
Closing
Learning to trust God isn’t a one-time decision.
It’s a daily surrender.
A daily choice to stop striving and start resting.
To stop controlling and start trusting.
And the beautiful thing is
God is patient with us.
So if you’ve been striving lately…
Trying to force things to happen…
Trying to carry life in your own strength…
Take a deep breath.
And remember what God said in Psalm 46:10:
Cease striving.
Be still.
And know that He is God.
