Neil:

Hey. Welcome back to your best t one d year ever. This is episode three. I'm Neil Greathouse. Some people call me the Beaties.

Neil:

Some people call me the Beats, which is is kinda weird. But if you've got five minutes, then you got time for this podcast. It doesn't matter if you're driving to work, you're out walking the dog, or maybe you're attempting to resist that giant pile of half price Valentine's Day candy just staring at you from the kitchen counter. Right? No.

Neil:

It's it's true. Like, just let's be honest. I don't know I don't know who decided that February 15 should be the official buy a 10 pound bag of Reese's hearts and pretend it's for later day, but here here we are. Okay. Since we are all surrounded by sugar right now, it seems like the perfect time to talk about why glucose tablets work faster than really anything else and why our low sugar brain does not want to believe that.

Neil:

It it is so difficult to change our our thinking about this, but what happens when we eat different low snacks? Okay. So let's say that we're low right now. Okay. We we go to the kitchen cabinet, then we go to the pantry, and what do we have?

Neil:

We've got a juice box, we got a candy bar, maybe you've got a banana, a handful of cereal, or maybe we have glucose tablets. What happens when we eat each one of these? Let's just let's just talk about it. A candy bar can have some fat in it. Right?

Neil:

And high fat content means it digests slower. So, by the time the sugar kicks in, we might already be overtreating because we're gonna eat something else. We're like, why is this candy bar not working fast enough? Sorry, I don't know what that voice was. Okay.

Neil:

Let's let's say we pick up the banana. Well, fructose, which is the sugar found in fruit, for ouctose sorry about that. Fructose has to be broken down by our body before we can use it as glucose. So it's not that fast. It seems super healthy, but it's not really that fast.

Neil:

Okay. Cereal or crackers or cookies, we have to eat more to get the carbs that we need, and they don't really hit our bloodstream quickly. Like, you eat a sleeve of Oreos, you are gonna eventually skyrocket, but it takes us a little while to get there. Let's talk about a juice box. It works faster, but the problem is the portion size can spike us past where we wanna be.

Neil:

Like, I have nervously drank an entire juice box one time and been like, I didn't mean to drink all of that, but I did. Okay. Now let's talk about glucose tablets that's straight up dextrose. It's absorbed fastest. There's no middle man.

Neil:

There's no extra junk. Like, it just has one job. Like, you had one job. Do your job. So let's let's talk about this.

Neil:

Alright. This isn't about getting everything perfect. None of us are. I'm not perfect. I overate some glucose tablets last week.

Neil:

I'm slowly learning that I only need a couple of them to kind of stop the low that's happening and and kinda steady out that drop. This is all about making one small habit easier. So if you've ever treated a low, and you felt awful for hours afterwards, then this this little shift might change everything. Remember, we're not doing a bad job. We're doing a difficult job, but we're also we're getting a little bit smarter about how we do it.

Neil:

Okay? That's what this is all about. So new episodes drop every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, so hit that subscribe if you haven't. But this is it. Like, this is just five minute quick hits in the middle of your day while you're driving, while you're doing laundry, while you're filling out a TPS report, whatever that whatever that is.

Neil:

Now if you want some free t one d resources, I I started a website to try and just put all of this stuff in one place. Because I'm on I'm doing this on social media, but I'm I'm I need a landing spot. So I made a website called yourbestt1dyear.com. You can go there and grab them for free. There's no gimmicks.

Neil:

There's no catch. It's just stuff to make our type one diabetes life a little easier. And that's it. We'll see you in the next episode. Remember, you got this.

Neil:

Nobody remembers easy, and what you are doing is pretty much incredible, and I'm excited to hear about your best t one d year ever.
