The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Season 7 of The Drop begins tonight as Iggy Pop and David Bowie go to jail in 1976 and we, like everything else in Korea, get touched by COVID as Kat Bass has to sit out the first show of the season under quarantine.

Show Notes

As broadcast March 21, 2022 with plenty of spring for your podcast steppin.  Tonight we welcome two very new things with open arms on The Drop, with the start of Season 7 of the show happening on Spring Solstice, we couldn't possibly take that as a bad sign, although Iggy Pop and David Bowie weren't having the most auspicious night on this date in 1976, which is our history opener for the gig.  Tons of great new tunes to cover on the show tonight, with new tunes from The Smile, Bon Iver, and a new album announced from Arcade Fire to highlight.  However, we were missing Kat Bass at least in the studio this week as she came down with COVID, so is trapped at home until later this week as a result.  Great cuts to hear in our 2nd hour Popcast feature from her as well though, although without her lovely voice.  Nothing serious with Kat's situation though, she's doing well so no worries!

It is 20 hours past midnight and season 7 of The Drop kicks off tonight, and just moments ago in fact, if you wanna get technical about it. We hope you had a great weekend and that spring has kicked off today in all the right ways, with those of you not getting technical but needing assistance in that area it must be noted that fair spring’s solstice is March 21, this being the year 2022. Danno here welcoming the 7th season of the show and the solstice of my namesake with open arms, coming at you from the mic in the usual studio 2 at GFN HQ, how do you do? Extra special shout outs to all of you continuing to make our nightly music show churn, you’re the best and we cannot thank you enough for making all of this possible. We have a couple of new personalities joining us weekly on the air for season 7 with the departures of Prince Paolo & Lizz Kalo on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and there’s definitely other surprises we’ll unveil here in the next couple of weeks. However, not much has changed here on Monday nights, as it is our Popcast feature with Kat Bass, but one thing that has changed is she has contracted COVID over the past week, so she’s in quarantine for today. That’s the bad news, but the good news which is much more important is that she’s feeling perfectly fine. She’s still got the selections and tunes for parts 3 & 4 this evening, and we’ll see what happens then as far as her joining us on our first show of the season. For right now though, we go back to 1976 for tonight’s TIGHT (or) feature, and we’ll talk Bowie & Iggy and the big bust after we take a ride. THIS is The Drop.
Iggy Pop – The Passenger
The Drop is officially taking a ride as we have officially kicked off Season 7 of The Drop this fine spring solstice. Happy to say goodbye to old man winter, and we hope you had a great start to the workweek today.
That was our history for tonight’s start to all the music here on Monday, and that was of course Iggy Pop with The Passenger, released in 1977 on the Lust for Life LP.
And in light of today’s TIGHT (or) feature, one wonders if being the mere passenger along for the ride was maybe some inspiration for that song, as we go to Rochester, NY on this date in 1976 as David Bowie and Iggy Pop both got busted for marijuana possession by the cops, who’d raided Bowie’s hotel room after a concert there.
Bowie’s hearing took place later on April 20 (whoa, dude), where all charges against everyone were dropped. So, in other words, all that drama and show outside of the real show at the concert were all a total waste of time and effort.
Bowie at this time was touring his Station To Station LP, which had dropped earlier that year on January 23.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
So moving along, and staying mindful and positive there is indeed a point to THIS, we got new tunes just out from Andrew Bird, Yumi Zouma, and Dent May to start letting the new stuff dance around in the atmosphere, and we’ll talk about this troika of tunes after the magic. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday.
______
Back on The Drop this evening and it is our final new muses Monday night of the season. What’s happening tonight, Drop Slops (KOR)? Danno here, studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, buzzing with a fresh new season ahead and spring in the air. For those just joining us Kat Bass has contracted COVID, which, honestly, who hasn’t here in Korea lately, but she’s feeling fine and has the tunes lined up for hour 2 tonight. We just kicked off our New Muses Monday properly with the first trio of fresh cuts to taste test, so let’s get to the nutritional info here…
Andrew Bird – Atomized (…a new standalone single from the acclaimed singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist out of Chicago is out as of last Friday. This song deals with the death of Joan Didion, whose journalism and writings dealt with the fragmentation and isolation of the individual during the heights of the 1960’s counterculture. Nothing larger announced, but Andrew Bird’s 2019 album My Finest Work Yet was indeed our album of the year, so do check that if you never did.)
Yumi Zouma – Astral Projections (…one of the top indie darlings out of New Zealand are out with their latest album as of Friday. Present Tense is available everywhere now, and the band describes the LP as A process of curation, revisiting the past and making it relevant to the present.)
Dent May – Crying Laughing (…always a vintage sound with this singer-songwriter out of LA, this being his latest which just dropped last Wednesday. May proudly carries the torch of Harry Nilsson, Carole King, and Randy Newman with each release, this being a standalone single for now.)
Alright, so we still have a good bit of real estate on the clock tonight, and we have a big single out over the weekend along with a couple of announcements. First off, Arcade Fire announced their sixth studio album WE with a two-part single called The Lightning I & II. Almost simultaneous to that is the announcement that Will Butler, younger brother to lead singer Win Butler has left the band. The break is amicable and everyone remains close, but Will just felt it was time to move on after wrapping the recording of this upcoming album. WE, which is a two-part LP, drops May 6 so mark it, this sounds pretty promising. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.

II
Back at it and continuing our maiden voyage of The Drop Season 7, kicking off tonight! Very excited to have you with us on this New Muses Monday, but as is often the case, COVID has reared its ugly head tonight as Kat Bass caught it over the weekend, but she’s perfectly fine just small discomfort, and has the tunes lined up for hour 2. We just lit the wick on the 2nd stanza of our radiological orchestra for tonight, so let’s get to the damage...
The Smile – Skrting On The Surface (…for those unfamiliar, this is the side project of Radiohead members Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood along with Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner. The band has released several very Radiohead-esque singles, and this one is no different, although unlike the other singles the band have released, this did originate as a Radiohead outtake never released. The band are hitting the tour circuit in Europe this spring, so maybe check it out if you’re over there. This single also has a video that was shot in a Cornwall Mine, with the film being developed in water from the mine itself, which is kinda wild.)
Pod, socials, etc…
So, let’s continue with the new cuts for tonight and next block we have Ethan Gruska leading off to be followed by Hovvdy and why mona. We’ll talk about the background after the foreground dies down, but for now, THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
____
Back on The Drop here on our New Muses Monday grand opener for this season as the solstice hath shone warm and bright in Gwangju today. This is Danno as always in studio 2 GFN HQ on the usual steelo, and unfortunately Kat Bass has come down with a bit of COVID as of last weekend, but she’s feeling perfectly fine and will join us for hour 2 tonight at least in terms of scriptage and tune selection. Now, as far as the songs we just heard let’s get explainin’…
Ethan Gruska & Bon Iver – So Unimportant (…this is an early pandemic collaboration between Gruska and Justin Vernon. For those unfamiliar, Gruska gained a bit of buzz after working with Phoebe Bridgers as co-producer on a couple of songs, notably the title track to her album Punisher. Keep an eye on him, very talented artist right there.)
Hovvdy – Everything (…for those who missed it last year, this duo out of Austin came out with a very strong LP called True Love, and this tune just out last week is the first tune left on the cutting room floor from the album. The song is rather straightforward as far as message, with the band saying the song is about having fun even when you don’t achieve objectives.)
why mona – lemons (…interesting band here, which is the duo of Unlike Pluto and Joanna Jones, who’s mainly known as an actor in Hamilton. It seems that this is a standalone single for now, with nothing larger announced here, but this is another group to keep an eye on.)
Alright so the halftime break approaches rapidly, but we have a couple more joints to let into the air before then. Up next is Mt Joy with their latest single Lemon Tree, appropriately enough given the previous song, and then we have Cathedral Bells with Fall Into Place and those two standalones are gonna call time on our first half tonight. THIS is The Drop at haltime.
Mt. Joy – Lemon Tree
Cathedral Bells – Fall Into Place

Part III

Hot-Take

Kanye West - Hurricane
Kanye West will not perform at the 2022 Grammy Awards. The Recording Academy's decision to ban the 44-year-old from the Grammys was based off of his recent Instagram activity, which included slinging racial slurs at Trevor Noah.

iyla - Naked Girl
Maren Morris clapped back at a social media troll who ordered her to 'dress appropriately' after she posted a throwback nude playboy shoot on social media. The musician hit back with: "RESPECT 4 MOM BOOBZ." As a comment.

Fresh Buns

Alessia Cara - Voice in My Head
03.18.2022
I'm sorry, is there something wrong with the system or is it true that Alessia Cara released a THIRD Album within the past few weeks? She has come out with "Me, Myself, and I" this past week and there so much to take in!

King Princess - For My Friends
03.18.2022
King Princess will be releasing a new album later this year titled "Hold On Baby". Giving us a little sneek peek, For My Friends is the new single that will be a part of her album. Apparently, it's about her high school friends.

GAYLE - luv starved
03.18.2022
Gayle wrote “luv starved” when she had made mistakes when it came to her relationships. She says "I pushed away every possibility of it away until somebody came into my life that I didn’t want to push away and I couldn’t tell if it would be worth it or not to open up myself to the possibility of caring about somebody deeply."

Tones and I - Eyes Don't Lie
03.17.2022
Eyes Don't Lie is her first new music since the release of 2021’s debut album ‘Welcome To The Madhouse’. Her new single represents of being alone, but not lonely. Escaping something that hurts and being happy, even if its passed.

The Score - Pull The Cord

Part IV

The Unlikely Candidates - Sunshine
03.18.2022
The Unlikely Candidates are an American indie rock band from Keller, Texas, widely known from their classic song, Novacaine. Sunshine is the first of three singles leading up to the full length album in May and spring tour for this year.

Unlike Pluto - Cold Weather
03.15.2022
For those who don't know, Unlike Pluto is an American singer, songwriter, DJ and record producer. All the singer had to say was "wrote a song about the cold weather". Right, the cold does make us comfy, but also sad and lonely.

Mabel, Jax Jones, & Galantis - Good Luck
03.18.2022
“Good Luck” is a collaboration between British singer Mabel, British DJ Jax Jones and Swedish duo Galantis. We're back on the EDM train as the sun is shining brighter in the sky. Summer's coming.

Marian Hill, Kemba, & Steve Davit - Spinnin'
03.11.2022
Marian Hill just dropped the latest single SPINNIN off of their upcoming third studio album "why can’t we just pretend?". The moody and elusive track, which features Bronx hip-hop artist Kemba and sax master Steve Davit, is ear-candy defined.

On Tour

Who. Charli XCX
When/Where. US & EU 03/26/2022 - 06/09/2022
Opener. Complicated?

Charli XCX is out with a new album since the 18th and will start her tour from the 26th! "Crash" really shouts Charlie's edge tech sound, bringing us back to 2014. A neat way to start off the summer!
Apparently there are a few too many artists who have collaborated with her songs that could make an appearance to her shows.

Charli XCX - Boom Clap

Charli XCX - Boys

Charli XCX ft Rina Sawayama - Beg For You
