Well, actually

working as an occupational therapist

and really loving clinical work

after graduating from Troy University
00:01:22:17 - 00:01:23:12
with my masters
00:01:23:12 - 00:01:25:14
and I was taking field work students
00:01:25:14 - 00:01:26:23
and enjoyed being able
00:01:26:23 - 00:01:29:04
to mentor them and new therapists.
00:01:29:04 - 00:01:30:03
And I was even teaching
00:01:30:03 - 00:01:31:22
some continuing education courses
00:01:31:22 - 00:01:32:21
and I found myself

becoming more interested in research,

which is kind of funny

because I actually chose a masters

over a clinical doctorate

because I thought there's no way
00:01:41:21 - 00:01:42:15
I'm ever going to
00:01:42:15 - 00:01:44:09
be involved in research.
00:01:44:09 - 00:01:45:13
But as I was working across
00:01:45:13 - 00:01:47:07
that continuum of health care,
00:01:47:07 - 00:01:49:05
I just kept finding myself
00:01:49:05 - 00:01:51:01
coming up with clinical questions
00:01:51:01 - 00:01:52:05
based on the clients,
00:01:52:05 - 00:01:53:03
the populations,
00:01:53:03 - 00:01:55:00
the diagnoses I was working with
00:01:55:00 - 00:01:56:21
and going back to that evidence
00:01:56:21 - 00:01:58:11
and I was doing what I was taught,
00:01:58:11 - 00:02:00:10
I was being a consumer of evidence,
00:02:00:10 - 00:02:02:05
but I was finding that
00:02:02:05 - 00:02:03:10
there wasn't enough evidence
00:02:03:10 - 00:02:05:00
for some of the things I was interested
00:02:05:00 - 00:02:07:02
in, and there were some significant gaps
00:02:07:02 - 00:02:08:22
on the rehabilitation side.
00:02:08:22 - 00:02:10:20
So I kind of started to envision myself
00:02:10:20 - 00:02:12:00
and think about, well,
00:02:12:00 - 00:02:13:15
maybe I could be a part of that process
00:02:13:15 - 00:02:15:16
to help answer those questions,
00:02:15:16 - 00:02:17:12
maybe someday down the road.

And for me,

that's kind of where it all started

as integrating

my clinical practice and interests

with the possibility of doing research.

I knew that I wanted to teach someday.

I had taught at the undergrad level
00:02:30:01 - 00:02:31:04
and really enjoyed it,
00:02:31:04 - 00:02:33:06
but as my research interest was growing,
00:02:33:06 - 00:02:34:24
I started to kind of play around
00:02:34:24 - 00:02:35:10
with the idea
00:02:35:10 - 00:02:36:09
of going back to school,
00:02:36:09 - 00:02:36:15
and that's
00:02:36:15 - 00:02:39:15
when I decided to pursue a Ph.D..
00:02:39:20 - 00:02:41:05
I was in my first semester
00:02:41:05 - 00:02:42:07
and the program director
00:02:42:07 - 00:02:43:14
at the University of Nevada
00:02:43:14 - 00:02:44:20
called me and said,
00:02:44:20 - 00:02:46:11
Can you come on campus?
00:02:46:11 - 00:02:47:17
And pitch an idea on
00:02:47:17 - 00:02:50:03
how we could make our anatomy class
00:02:50:03 - 00:02:51:04
a little more functional,
00:02:51:04 - 00:02:51:24
a little more relevant
00:02:51:24 - 00:02:53:16
for occupational therapists,
00:02:53:16 - 00:02:54:11
because it was taught
00:02:54:11 - 00:02:56:13
by the College of Medicine
00:02:56:13 - 00:02:58:04
and not by an occupational therapist.
00:02:58:04 - 00:02:59:06
And sometimes that was hard
00:02:59:06 - 00:02:59:23
for the students
00:02:59:23 - 00:03:02:00
to connect the content
00:03:02:00 - 00:03:03:12
to what they were going to do.
00:03:03:12 - 00:03:04:11
So I made my pitch
00:03:04:11 - 00:03:05:08
and then she said, Great,
00:03:05:08 - 00:03:07:03
would you like to teach the class?
00:03:07:03 - 00:03:09:03
And so I taught as an adjunct.
00:03:09:03 - 00:03:11:12
And then after that semester,
00:03:11:12 - 00:03:12:11
she reached out and said,
00:03:12:11 - 00:03:13:08
Would you like to apply
00:03:13:08 - 00:03:14:22
for a full time position?
00:03:14:22 - 00:03:15:16
And I've been there
00:03:15:16 - 00:03:18:03
since 2018, full time,
00:03:18:03 - 00:03:19:13
and then I've kind of transitioned.
00:03:19:13 - 00:03:20:24
I still teach anatomy.
00:03:20:24 - 00:03:22:14
I also teach our mental health courses,
00:03:22:14 - 00:03:23:23
but I transitioned
00:03:23:23 - 00:03:25:07
from just clinical courses
00:03:25:07 - 00:03:27:09
and now I teach are intro to Qualitative
00:03:27:09 - 00:03:29:07
and Quantitative research,
00:03:29:07 - 00:03:30:07
which I really enjoy
00:03:30:07 - 00:03:31:00
because it's allowed me
00:03:31:00 - 00:03:32:10
to share my passion
00:03:32:10 - 00:03:34:10
and my research experience
00:03:34:10 - 00:03:36:01
with our first year occupational
00:03:36:01 - 00:03:38:07
therapy doctorate students.

You're not just in the research

and also in teaching

and you have a clinical practice

still going on.

So how do you find time to do

all this research?

You know,
00:04:13:11 - 00:04:14:23
I think that's one thing faculty
00:04:14:23 - 00:04:15:24
always struggle with,
00:04:15:24 - 00:04:17:06
especially if you have
00:04:17:06 - 00:04:18:10
a clinical practice
00:04:18:10 - 00:04:20:12
or administrative position.
00:04:20:12 - 00:04:22:08
It's hard to find time to do research.
00:04:22:08 - 00:04:24:09
So how do you find time to do
00:04:24:09 - 00:04:25:13
this research
00:04:25:13 - 00:04:28:21
and get all these publications out?
00:04:28:23 - 00:04:30:05
Well, I appreciate that question.
00:04:30:05 - 00:04:31:15
And the first thing I'll say is
00:04:31:15 - 00:04:32:21
I didn't do it by myself,
00:04:32:21 - 00:04:34:06
that's for sure.
00:04:34:06 - 00:04:36:03
I've had a lot of great mentors,
00:04:36:03 - 00:04:38:01
and I think research is a team effort
00:04:38:01 - 00:04:40:13
and it starts with collaboration.
00:04:40:13 - 00:04:41:24
We really need each other
00:04:41:24 - 00:04:43:10
in the world of research
00:04:43:10 - 00:04:44:23
and of course academia,
00:04:44:23 - 00:04:46:07
because we all have different
00:04:46:07 - 00:04:47:11
expertise, different
00:04:47:11 - 00:04:49:10
experiences, backgrounds,
00:04:49:10 - 00:04:51:19
ideas, even different skills.
00:04:51:19 - 00:04:54:03
And I think research is more efficient
00:04:54:03 - 00:04:56:22
when we share those and we work together.
00:04:56:22 - 00:04:58:13
Because going from that idea
00:04:58:13 - 00:04:59:19
or that research question

all the way to publication

for anyone that's done
00:05:03:00 - 00:05:03:17
that knows it's
00:05:03:17 - 00:05:05:02
a long and difficult process,
00:05:05:02 - 00:05:07:06
as you alluded to.
00:05:07:06 - 00:05:09:09
And we also know that across fields
00:05:09:09 - 00:05:11:08
it doesn't really matter what discipline
00:05:11:08 - 00:05:12:05
you're in.
00:05:12:05 - 00:05:15:00
We have a high percentage of projects
00:05:15:00 - 00:05:16:00
that get abandoned
00:05:16:00 - 00:05:19:00
before they ever make it to publication,
00:05:19:03 - 00:05:19:22
and sometimes there's
00:05:19:22 - 00:05:21:00
a valid reason for that.
00:05:21:00 - 00:05:21:22
But other times it's
00:05:21:22 - 00:05:23:15
that time, it's that commitment,
00:05:23:15 - 00:05:25:05
it's that lack of follow through
00:05:25:05 - 00:05:26:17
because of
00:05:26:17 - 00:05:29:01
the arduous process of publishing.
00:05:29:01 - 00:05:30:12
So I've found that
00:05:30:12 - 00:05:32:04
when I'm collaborating on a project,
00:05:32:04 - 00:05:33:12
I'm far more likely
00:05:33:12 - 00:05:34:13
to meet
00:05:34:13 - 00:05:37:15
those deadlines, to maintain motivation,
00:05:37:15 - 00:05:38:16
to finish a project
00:05:38:16 - 00:05:40:20
and to get it actually published.
00:05:40:20 - 00:05:43:01
And I'll be very transparent.
00:05:43:01 - 00:05:44:06
I have to projects right now
00:05:44:06 - 00:05:46:09
that I was doing on my own
00:05:46:09 - 00:05:48:17
that are maybe 75% done
00:05:48:17 - 00:05:50:18
sitting in a folder on my computer
00:05:50:18 - 00:05:51:12
and I kind of just
00:05:51:12 - 00:05:52:13
keep leaving them there.
00:05:52:13 - 00:05:53:11
But I have five
00:05:53:11 - 00:05:54:19
papers under review
00:05:54:19 - 00:05:56:05
that I collaborated with people
00:05:56:05 - 00:05:57:06
that I worked on a team.
00:05:57:06 - 00:05:58:05
And so

even though I know that collaboration
00:06:00:09 - 00:06:01:21
is really the key for me,
00:06:01:21 - 00:06:03:00
I still struggle
00:06:03:00 - 00:06:04:23
when I'm not working with collaborators.

And I for me, it's straightforward.

If you have people counting on you,
00:06:07:22 - 00:06:09:23
you tend to work smarter and harder.
00:06:09:23 - 00:06:11:04
You have that accountability
00:06:11:04 - 00:06:12:10
of your colleagues
00:06:12:10 - 00:06:14:00
and you can also ask for help
00:06:14:00 - 00:06:14:14
when you need it.

So our workload changes.

We have that ebb and flow in academia,
00:06:18:09 - 00:06:20:01
a higher workload in one semester,
00:06:20:01 - 00:06:21:19
a lower workload in another semester.
00:06:21:19 - 00:06:23:11
And so when it's overwhelming,
00:06:23:11 - 00:06:25:09
when you need to make some modifications
00:06:25:09 - 00:06:27:22
to your responsibilities on the project,
00:06:27:24 - 00:06:28:20
when you have a team,
00:06:28:20 - 00:06:30:01
you're not alone, right?
00:06:30:01 - 00:06:31:23
You can go to them
00:06:31:23 - 00:06:33:18
and get that support that you need.

And so

I think anyone in kind of a research

slump right now,

one of the first things I'd suggest

is to put yourself out there,

which can be a little scary

and find some collaborators.

The other thing

that has been really helpful for me

is looking at the type of research I do.

I'm at Toro University, Nevada.

It's not an Rowan University.

I'm not on a researcher tenure track
00:06:54:06 - 00:06:56:24
and we don't have extensive resources.

We do have some wonderful facilities,
00:06:58:16 - 00:07:00:18
but the truth is there's limitations
00:07:00:18 - 00:07:01:20
in what I can do
00:07:01:20 - 00:07:04:01
and what other faculty can do
00:07:04:01 - 00:07:06:09
at their respective institutions.

But I'm also limited by my position,
00:07:08:18 - 00:07:10:01
right? I have responsibilities.

I have courses to teach.

And so

I think it's important to be pragmatic

with your research agenda.

I would love to do

a randomized controlled trial

right at some point in my career,

but it's not feasible

where I am right now,

and I'm still an early career researcher.

I have those ideas in mind

and I'm working towards them.

But instead I consider

what can I do with my available time,

with my available resources

that are

still beneficial to the community,

that's relevant to my expertise

and something that still gets me excited.

Where do we already have

participants, populations?

A great reason to collaborate

with community partners and clinicians.

How can we capitalize on data

that we've already collected?

We recently did a study on student

outcomes from our program, data

we already collected

and found that our standardized

patient experiences were predictive

of fieldwork performance.

It's been very well-received.

It cost us no money to do that study.

Some faculty might want to think

I'm doing a couple of projects there

that are really exciting for me,

but in the end

I would suggest, you know,

finding opportunities

because if you have a five year project,

it's a little harder to stay motivated.

So sometimes a couple of smaller projects

keep us excited about what we're doing,

projects that are low cost projects

that we can collaborate

with, other faculty,

with clinicians, with students.

The reason why we got into teaching,

and I do recognize

these types of studies

may not be everybody's cup of tea,

as a stepping stone

so that then it could lead to a larger

And I made this mistake

the first two years I had this

thought that,

okay, I need to get a whole day

blocked off

or at least a half a day

so that I can focus on writing.

And it just wasn't happening.

And then

I was trying to do stuff on the weekend

and no one needs to be doing projects on

a weekend.

We need to have that work life balance.

So I started to try to figure out

what's my minimum time
