Always looking to help you and connect with others. All right, let's get into it, shall we? I have so many stories I wanna tell you. I'm not sure how this episode is gonna go 'cause I'm feeling really activated and excited. so even though I have good notes and I'm, and I'm hopeful that I'm going to be able to bring high value to you today, just know I'm coming from a very excited and activated state of my nervous system.
[00:01:04] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: So, vacation, I used to go on vacation to escape my life. And I mean that wholeheartedly. Like I just felt like I gotta get away, I gotta get outta here. it was like I was running from a burning building, which was, you know, work and just life was hard and, activated in not always a really great, excited kind of way.
[00:01:33] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: For a variety of reasons that many of you know and I've talked about here before. But anyhow, I am getting ready to go on this trip tomorrow, and as I was preparing yesterday for some things, I was sitting out on my back patio taking a break, and I thought, you know what? It feels so good.
[00:01:54] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: To be leaving on vacation with a totally different mindset. I'm not trying to get away from my life. In fact, I'm gonna miss my patio and my dog and my kids and my life that I've built. And so while, yes, I'm leaving to go explore and be curious and do just wonderful things, It comes from a very different place.
[00:02:21] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: And so that's why the episode title is wherever you go, there you are, because we can believe that we need to run away, and sometimes it's not just a vacation. It's changing jobs or moving or changing spouses or changing something that we think is going to solve something that is actually at a soul level.
[00:02:47] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: And so your soul goes with you in a new job, in a new city, in a new relationship on vacation. And so, I wanna talk about that. another part of this vacation story that I have to share with you is that, you know, here, um, Business is Human. We talk about, brain, business, Bible as our foundation, and.
[00:03:11] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: It was a couple of months ago. Um, in my prayer time on my patio, I said, you know what, Lord? I haven't been on a vacation in a while that wasn't somehow attached to work. Like if I go to do a keynote somewhere, sometimes I'll take a few days, and if it's in a fun place and explore, I've taken some trips that we're a part of, um, exploring some real estate opportunities, and so I haven't had a vacation that is just purely vacation in a while, in years.
[00:03:39] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: and that's another testimony to I don't feel like I need to escape my life. I love my life and how nested and wonderful it feels to be in my house and the life that creating the conditions to thrive, as we say around here. I kid you not, it was just a few weeks later, um, having dinner with a friend client and she's talking about going back to Italy to visit a friend.
[00:04:04] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: And I'm aware of this friend and she's been there recently and I was like, oh, yay. I'm so glad you're going back. She was like, yeah. her partner couldn't go and she was like, do you wanna go? I was like, yes. And then. It was right before my birthday that this happened, and my parents were like, what do you want for your birthday?
[00:04:22] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: I am like, buy me a plane ticket to Italy. so they gave me money and then we found out that the foster of the plane tickets had gone down way past what they had been in the past. one thing after another. This trip just keeps getting better. I just got a message from my friend that we leave tomorrow that we got upgraded to first class.
[00:04:41] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: I'm like, so when I tell you that the Lord wants to bless you in ways that are just very beautiful and practical based on your prayers, trust me. Asked me about the boots that he bought me for my birthday too. Mm-hmm. Not kidding. I started posting on my, uh, Instagram story. thank you Lord for these boots that I, I typically buy myself a pair of shoes or boots for my birthday for myself every year.
[00:05:04] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: And this year I was like, you know what? I'm gonna see if God will buy me these boots because they were a little more expensive than I do spend on my birthday boots or birthday shoes. And so I was like, Hebrews 11, one says, you know. believe In things yet to be seen. And so I started posting some scripture and pictures of these boots, and two days before my birthday, there was a deposit in my account for $350.
[00:05:28] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: That's exactly the amount of the boots. It was on a day that I was two miles from the boot store visiting my son in Nashville. The deposit was made at 6:00 AM I was dead asleep. I didn't make that deposit. The Lord did. So I've got stories for days if you wanna hear more of the miraculous signs of, all these.
[00:05:46] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: God good. Thanks. I told you I'm activated and excited today, so my horns aren't coming easily. It's a good place to be excited. So the illusion of escape, lemme get back on track, narrow it back in. changing things on the outside. Aren't going to give you the satisfaction of what you want to feel on the inside.
[00:06:09] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: And so oftentimes a client or a potential client will call me and say, Hey, I really need to change jobs. Will you help me? Like, I'd love to. And then when we get into it, I realize that what they're feeling is a. Soul misalignment or something in themselves that changing jobs is only gonna just create more uncertainty.
[00:06:32] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: It's not gonna solve it. And so I always just at that point say, okay, well let's talk about this because wherever you go, there you are. And so if your sense of self is frenetic and proving yourself and never feeling like you can take a break and always in this state of fight or flight. You're just gonna take that to the new job.
[00:06:54] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: So we've gotta address that before you go to a new place inside out. 'cause the brain is always seeking predictability it believes that same equals safe. And so if you just go change jobs, you're gonna take this already frenetic feeling of not feeling safe with yourself and your habits and your choices into this new place.
[00:07:21] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: And you're gonna create additional loops of, of anxiety, but you just don't want, so I post it on Instagram. And I said, look, if, if you are experiencing the Sunday scaries, it may not be a new job that you need. It may be a stronger sense of self in your identity, and there's someone that cares more about your career and your life than you or your boss.
[00:07:54] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: And that's the Lord. So Jesus wants you to feel the identity that you were created for, like back to your mother's womb days, like before the world told you who you were supposed to morph into or strive to be or prove yourself to be there. You have an identity that is deeper than all of that, and so. I want you to know that version of you.
[00:08:24] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: I want you to know that you are loved and protected in a way that when you say, Hey, I haven't had a vacation for a while. You don't have to spend hours and days searching for the perfect deal and get a bunch of people's recommendations and figure it all out. Like there's somebody that wants that for you as much as you want it for you.
[00:08:45] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Or when you say, I really want to be promoted and do something different, that you don't feel like you have to prove yourself and strive and, put yourself in a situation where you're working more and neglecting your own needs more. Like that's the opposite of what he wants for you. You are a masterpiece that was created to do great works.
[00:09:12] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: A verse that says, before I formed you, I knew you Just sit in that for a bit and think about what that would be like to be cared for there's someone out there, something out there that wants more and better for you than you could even want for yourself. So when those Sunday scaries hit, I want you to ask yourself, is it really the job?
[00:09:34] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Or is that voice in your head that sounds like fear telling you that you are not enough? just ask, what is this voice really saying to me? Because the power of good and evil is always at work, and God would only speak loving kind affirmations to you, so it might be a different voice and that's not the one you wanna listen to.
[00:09:59] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: here's the deal also, high achievers, performers, typically the kind of people that listen to this podcast get tired. Like work is exhausting. It's hard. but ask yourself, are you tired from doing work that feeds your soul? Is it soul food? Or are you tired from trying to prove yourself?
[00:10:21] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Feel a sense of worth and satisfaction 'cause I'm tired at the end of a long day of coaching or preparing keynotes or whatever it is. And I love my work so much that I can work for hours and hours and hours and hours, and so there are times I have to stop myself because I am exhausted, but it's a different kind of tired, thriving, tired and striving, tired are different.
[00:10:46] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: I'm not striving, trying to prove myself. I'm trying to build the things that are going to serve you, and that feels really, really good, but it's also really, really exhausting too. So just try to sort out a little bit what that voice is telling you. Because burnout says, prove yourself.
[00:11:05] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Work harder, take care of the business, and it will take care of you. Lies lies from the pit of hell. We were sold this pattern of success That's what I was told success was, prove yourself, work harder, take care of the business, and we'll take care of you. No, we need to take care of ourselves and know our identity and then go out and surf.
[00:11:28] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Rested well, ready to go again the next day. The more we know ourselves and the more we show up to serve others and it can be like, I'm the best Excel person in the company and when I build pivot tables, everybody benefits likeWhatever your gift and talent is, maybe your gift and talent is, you are in manufacturing and you build really good systems and processes that allow the line to run really effectively, and that makes everybody's life better.
[00:11:58] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Like everybody has a different place in business. We're all unique down to our fingerprints on purpose for a purpose, so you don't have to do my job.we're all unique pieces of the puzzle. Know that you know who you are and that you go to serve others with the gifts and talents that you have, because chronic striving to prove yourself keeps your nervous system stuck in activation that feels like.
[00:12:28] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: being chased by a bear, it's an unsafe feeling. Anything that has friction about your identity is creating unsafe feelings of activation. And your nervous system when you're feeling unsafe, doesn't know the difference between you being chased by a bear or having a bad boss. It feels like I gotta run away.
[00:12:54] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: And so the more we can ask ourselves, okay, what am I really feeling? Get quiet. Ask yourself those questions. Because if you are in a situation that's toxic and you really do have a situation that feels like you're running from a bear every day because of your boss or because of coworkers, ask the Lord to put you somewhere else.
[00:13:21] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Where you can feel safe. But we've gotta do that internal work to say to ourselves, am I okay? Am I creating this anxiety in my head? Is it real? Like we've gotta ask ourselves, What am I experiencing here? I'm gonna teach you how I pray because the more I've talked to people about this, they're like, I don't know.
[00:13:41] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: I don't know how to hear those voices you talk about. I'm like, okay, I'm gonna teach you today. this has evolved for me, like when I started praying earnestly, 10 years ago or more. It used to be like happenstance and now it's like every single day earnestly. I would just talk to the Lord like I'm talking to you right now because I didn't grow up in church.
[00:14:03] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: I mean, I went squirrel hunting on Sunday, so I didn't have to go to church with my biological grandmother Who would. Come and try to take me to church. I didn't wanna go there. I didn't know people. I felt uncomfortable. So I didn't grow up with this. I would just sit down and talk to the Lord like this, okay, Lord, what?
[00:14:21] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: What are we doing today? What's going on? Why am I feeling this way? And then I would try to get quiet enough to see what I heard. Now I read this, A couple different books and things about prayer that has given me some more guidance that has helped me a lot. So I'm gonna share it with you now. Now I sit down and I say, Lord, I know that you are an answer of prayers.
[00:14:43] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: I read the Bible. I know where it says it. And then sometimes I'll actually quote the scripture, Matthew seven and seven is a good one. so I'll say, Lord, quiet my voice and silence the voice of the enemy. So that you can bind my mind to Christ, so I can hear from you. And then I just pause and breathe and let that steep and let that just be a quieting moment.
[00:15:10] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: And then if I have questions I need clarity on, I'll ask. And then I'll just get really quiet and see what thoughts, what the Holy Spirit brings and just be still. That's the hardest part for people is the being. Still, people will say, okay, I wanna pray, but like, do I just sit there? Because we're so used to being activated all the time that stillness feels wrong.
[00:15:32] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: So maybe the step one for you is just to practice being still for 10 minutes in the morning and see what that does to your cellular system to be able to receive and hear with more clarity. Anytime you need some clarity in the middle of the day, just close your eyes. When you shut out the input of visual, it's calming.
[00:15:56] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: It will actually heighten your sense of other areas, smell, hearing, sensing, so anything that you can close out as an input allows more stillness for you. Take deep breaths, feel those breaths and just talk to the Lord like you talk to me or anybody else. Because my biggest hurt, the thing that just pains me is when I talk to somebody that has given up on God because of church or religion or somebody that was shaming them about whatever,
[00:16:36] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: oftentimes religion in some churches become a power struggle. that's not what it's supposed to be. It's a relationship. Jesus rebuked the religious leaders because they were using faith to control people like it's in the Bible. So don't walk away from a key relationship that wants you to have the identity that you are created for more than anyone or anything in this world.
[00:17:05] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Don't give up on the relationship because of religion. Ugh. I just get like emotional thinking about it. 'cause the number of people that have said that to me, like, I don't know. I went to this church one time and this lady said this, or the pastor was having an affair with the person in the office. look, nobody gets attacked more than pastors.
[00:17:26] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: So if they don't have a strong conviction Yeah, they're, they're gonna lose their. Place, don't get me started. That'll be 18 episodes in this. so let's talk about this From a business and leadership perspective, the stronger you have, a sense of your own identity in the way that you are created, gives you better nervous system regulation, which means you end up being a better manager, better leader.
[00:17:52] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Come at it from the nervous system perspective. then let's just talk nervous system. The more rooted you are in your own sense of authentic self and not trying to prove yourself, the more you show up with the energy of regulation, and so that's a welcoming energy to people, and so it makes you a better leader.
[00:18:13] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: But when we lead from our God-given identity, not from fear or the the feeling that we need to perform, we create spaces of safety and clarity and connection. The energy we put out is different. So couple of reflection questions for you today. Where are you outsourcing your sense of worth to a boss, a title, a paycheck, or for performance?
[00:18:41] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Number two, what false messages about work and worth are still shaping your choices? If you have to violate your sense of character and values to perform at work, that's a false message. If you have to turn yourself into someone that you don't respect to be successful, that is a false message.
[00:19:07] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: Ask the Lord to take you somewhere else. You will. Reflection. Question number three, what would it feel like to lead from who you are? Not what you do. Because if you know who you are, you have a lot more options than just staying with whatever industry you're in or what role your title that you're in frees you up big time.
[00:19:29] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: And if you want some action plans, 'cause I know some of you do, try that prayer to quiet the other voices. Try it for seven days every day for seven days. See how it goes. I'd love to hear from you. Here's a journal prompt. dear Lord, who did you create me to be before the world told me who I should be?
[00:19:52] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: I spent a whole weekend with that one. Seriously, an entire weekend I spent with that question, pages and pages and pages of mostly what he told me I could peel off, take away guilt, shame, all kinds of things that were. Shed in that, in that weekend. those two were probably enough to keep you busy for a minute.
[00:20:15] Rebecca Fleetwood Hession: I hope this episode wasn't too chaotic. Like I said, I am so just activated and excited with all the goodness that's happening in my life, and I wanted to share it with you. So it may not have been as succinct of a format as I try to bring to you, but here we are. Alright make your great day, love you mean it.
