Dan Lloyd joins us for our Season 6 AMPED maiden voyage as well after 9pm with a backlog of new cuts from the past couple of weeks.

Show Notes

As broadcast September 30, 2021 with plenty of forget me nots for you podcast note takers.  We wish a very happy 67th birthday to the incredible Patrice Rushen on this date to start the show, an amazing woman who made some amazing music that continues to gain relevance & fans with every year that goes by.  For our Sampled funk & soul showcase, we kept it around the early 80's for most of part 1 while highlighting a great show happening next weekend with Galactic & Neal Francis playing together in New Orleans.  Part 2 sees all new stuff with a pair of great joints out from Tru Thoughts over the past couple of weeks along with new albums just out last week from Holy Hive and The Rugged Nuggets.  Dan Lloyd returns to the sitcom set as usual for our Thursday nights, entering to raucous applause every time.  Lots of new tunes to go over and even some festival news for here in Korea to report!

I.
It is 20 hours past midnight on the first Thursday of the new season, and it’s time to let the stank out & throw rocks like we always do on our Sampled & AMPED fourth day of the workweek, with this particular 24 hour minichapter glinted off the mirror & onto the scrolls forever as September 30, 2021. This is Danno of course continuing with our season 6 premiere week this Thursday evening, what a day out there today, I hope you got out and enjoyed a bit of time in the sun today. As always we start tonight with our Sampled funk & soul crash course in the first hour, and then we are joined by the man, myth & legend of Gwangju’s very own Man On The Drums Dan Lloyd for our AMPED weekly rock feature. So, to get there we have to start somewhere tonight, and we can start no better than wishing a happy birthday to Number One: Patrice Rushen. THIS is The Drop.
Patrice Rushen – Number One (12” vers)
The Drop has commenced the birthday cakery here on our Sampled funk & soul season 6 opening night. What’s the deal, Drop Tops? (KOR) Danno here bossin the mic from studio 2, most thankful to have all of you joining us for tonight’s show amongst shows.
That was our TIGHT (or) feature to commence things properly tonight, wishing Patrice Rushen a very happy birthday today, that was Number One because she is to so many fans of her music and is definitely one of our all-time favorite artists.
While most know her for her smash 1982 hit Forget Me Nots for which she won a Grammy, it must also be noted that Number One was also a Grammy nominee for best instrumental that year. Of course, both of those appeared on the absolutely essential Straight From The Heart LP.
Rushen’s work through the years has continued to stand out & gain fans through the later generations, with her influence only growing. Nowadays she serves as an ambassador for Berklee College of Music and as the chair of the popular music program at USC’s Thornton School of Music, and appropriately so.
Happy birthday to the one they called Baby Fingers, may there be many, many more.

Onto the next block, we’re going to keep it in the late 70’s early 80’s rubric in the next block and to start we’ll rock Sylvia Striplin then follow up with Greg Phillinganes & Bernard Wright, all of which we’ll only talk up after they go to space & return. THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday season premiere.
____
Back on The Drop as we continue with part 1 on our Season Premiere Sampled & AMPED Thursday nights, which most will be familiar with by now. Danno here, about to play something newer next, but we just kept it vintage here on the fabulous Patrice Rushen’s 67th birthday, and of course Dan Lloyd will be smashing down the door and throwing rocks for our 2nd hour AMPED feature. Let’s run down those last three vintage vibes right there...
Sylvia Striplin – You Can’t Turn Me Away (…this of course is a sampler’s delight having featured on 28 songs through the years, most notably Junior Mafia’s Get Money & Naughty By Nature’s Hip-Hop Hooray back in the 90’s. This one came out on Striplin’s Give Me Your Love LP, released in 1981.)
Greg Phillinganes – Lazy Nina (…the artist is probably most well-known as the keyboardist for Toto back in the day, but he also had some pretty great solo stuff, this track being from 1984. In addition to Toto, he’s also featured with the Bee Gees, and Buckshot Lefonque while touring with the likes of Stevie Wonder & Eric Clapton, and later serving as the musical director for Michael Jackson.)
Bernard Wright – Spinnin’ (…another famed sample from the 1990’s right here, specifically I Wish by Skee-Lo. This tune appeared on Wright’s 1981 album Nard, and I’m not so sure that’s the best nickname or even if I can air it, but I’m ownin’ it!)
Moving along, we have a new tune out as of last week from new ATO Records arrival Neal Francis, whose latest is called Alameda Apartments, and the artist will be joining jazz-funk legends Galactic next Saturday at Tipitina’s, so in tribute we’ll close with a tune called Church. THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday opening salvo.

Galactic – Church

II.
The Drop continues along into a rather blue but still new part 2 for tonight. What’s snappingck and or tappingck Drop Slops (KOR)? Danno here rocking some new stuff just out for most of our radiological orchestra’s 2nd stanza, and we started just there with the newest of the bunch, so let’s discuss further...
Ben Pirani – Solitary Me (…the newest single from Terry & the fam over at Colemine Records. It’s kind of hard to capture the essence of isolation, loneliness, and all the emotional states every single one of us has had to deal with during the pandemic, but this one makes a very valiant effort at doing so. This tune will be part of a 7” single releasing physical format next month.)
Holy Hive – Brooklyn Ferry (…just out as of last Friday is the latest LP from the group, which is simply self-titled. That of course is available everywhere via Big Crown Records, and as usual is highly touted by yours truly on the mic right here.)
Now we’ll keep it a bit low key to continue the stankola tonight, and we have a trio of newbies with Joey Pecoraro leading the way with The Rugged Nuggets and fika rounding out the triforce. We’ll be sure to make sure the angles are just so & inform our findings after the glow. THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday evening.
____
The Drop swelters along as we inevitably march towards the termination of our first half, and the ensuing mayhem that sees Dan Lloyd join us for our AMPED Season 6 premiere in hour 2. Danno here, going through some of the newest funk & soul jawns just out over the past week or two, so let’s run things with the infotainment right now...
Joey Pecoraro – The Warden (…back in late May we saw the Michigan-based artist drop his Old Time Radio LP, and this would seem to be a joint he liked that was left on the cutting room floor for that LP. Do check that album in full, it’s good biz.)
The Rugged Nuggets – Songs for Lemona (…this tune is from the cinematic soul septet’s debut LP that just dropped last week. Entitled Odds & Ends, cinematic it certainly is. Definitely give it a shout if you liked that joint.)
fika feat Barbie – How Can I Love? (When I Can’t Get Away From You)* (…this tune is one of the latest singles to drop from Tru Thoughts and the lead single to the Coffee & Clouds EP from the South London duo of Sam Hutton & Al Wreaves. Coffee & Clouds drops in full on November 4th via the aforementioned Tru Thoughts.)
Now to finish the first half there is a lovely new EP from one of South Africa’s most magnetic artists in Tiwa Savage, which is called Water & Garri and actually dropped about 5 weeks ago. The next tune features Tiwa & Brandy teaming up on a lovely cut called Somebody’s Son. And last but not least to finish, we’ll rock a joint from sUb_modU’s debut LP Descent to the Centre, which was made with support from Off White’s Virgil Abloh. Our final cut is called Air Eater, and that is going to do it for this evening’s first 57. THIS is The Drop on your Sampled & AMPED Thursday night and it is undoubtedly halftime.
