Our goal is to explore Scripture together to discover the wisdom that has for our lives. In this podcast, we'll be diving deep into God's truths and discussing how they impact our daily living. We're eager to unpack the riches of the Bible with you all our extended church family. And now here's Welcome back temple family and friends. In today's episode, we will be diving into the topic of personal discipleship. And its role in becoming the true Kingdom servants, which is the series that we've been going through. We're going to talk through what it means to be a disciple how how it affects us, and how we minister and figuring out where we are in the process of really owning those things. We're really excited about that. Today, we have the preacher of the message himself. Let's go pastor Ben Holloway,
Bennett Holloway 1:09
you're stuck with me. I'll try not to be redundant. And I
Tuck Choate 1:13
joke but Dr. Your is is out of the country. Will you kind of tell us just briefly what's going on with him? Because it's big. Yeah. So
Bennett Holloway 1:20
doctor you were at does a lot of work internationally with southeastern. And some of the things that they're working towards is establishing healthy environments for different colleges or seminaries to be established to be able to train up and disciple in the native tongue of different countries and cultures. Graduates with a with a good foundation, biblically, to be able to teach and lead churches in different areas. And so as of recently, he got called out to head over to Ukraine, and serve over there for this week. That's where he's at right now. And he'll be making his way back to the state side soon. But he ended up needing to fly into Poland, and then walk across the border and pour into some of their network there, through southeastern. So in doing so, he asked if I would be able to teach this lesson. And he blessed me with the opportunity to, to delve into what it means to engage in personal discipleship here at Temple Church as we keep that that the forefront of our mind this reality of the Kingdom, and our desire to serve in what he's wanting to do in his church today.
Tuck Choate 2:36
Absolutely. All right. So let's let's talk through personal discipleship. And as we do a lot of times, I think the first thing when we're dealing with a fairly new concept is is to define it. So we need to figure out and you gave a couple different references to what some say it is. But I say sounds a little Jesus, like you've heard it said that I say, the
Bennett Holloway 3:02
two pastors that I refer, well, one of them's a pastor and one of the teacher and so Dallas Willard is one that I referenced John Piper's another one that I greatly respect. And I referenced him. And the reality is, is that a disciple in those days would be more a more accurate word to be used. There's an apprentice, and it's someone that isn't just a fan of a person or someone that just follows after but it's in their following that they walk where their feet walked, and their mannerisms and their worldview, and even the way that they communicate and the things that they teach, they begin to look more like the person that they're following. And so as these little Christian as these little Christ's, these Christians are disciples of Jesus, it would be more accurate to say that they are apprentices to become more like Jesus, they follow under his teaching and live as he's lived. So that's, that's, that's what when I use the word disciple, that's the depth that which we're talking about. We're not just talking about someone that agrees with him, or thinks he's a good teacher, or even is very up to date, and all of his podcast episodes, or all of his sermons that he's taught, or he knows the stuff that he said, it's someone that believes it and wants to look more like him in the pursuit of living as he lived. Yeah. Does that make sense? Yeah, absolutely.
Tuck Choate 4:22
It changes from a passive to a much more active because you are becoming, you know, those those old bracelets and said, What would Jesus do? If we all internalized that question, and lived that out? What would we look like?
Bennett Holloway 4:37
And so the challenge is almost, okay. So if we're looking towards a healthy church, and we'll walk through the passage in Ephesians, and a little bit, but on a personal side, there's a personal ownership that's required. Right? And so we aren't just a factory that pumps out. You don't just jump on a conveyor belt here you go around, it's like a carwash, you know, sit on the track. You go through on a Sunday and pop out nice and clean, there's there's, there's much more work that needs to be put into this situation. But there's also a transformation that the Holy Spirit can only do in the life of a follower as we deal with sin as we're Crucifying the flesh. And as we're growing to look more like him. The only way that's possible is through dependency on the Holy Spirit to do that in us and through us. And so there's a cultivation of discipleship or apprenticeship that must be owned by the individual in that form of a commitment to walk and answer the call. Follow me. So if you remember last week's episode, and in the sermon where we talked about a called out people, right, I want you to think in that same vein of thought of you, giving presented, having been presented with an opportunity to respond to Christ saying, follow me. So you're called out? You're a believer, you know, he's the Messiah? How would you respond? Will you do as Peter did and drop his nets, and immediately follow him? Or will we do as many others did, and come up with our excuses, and say, we do everything good, but we aren't willing to let go of that rich young ruler. Or I've got some other things I need to take care of like burying my parents, like, Are we are we coming up with the excuses?
Tuck Choate 6:25
And they're good excuses. They're
Bennett Holloway 6:27
great excuses, right? They're fantastic excuses. But when you line them up with the choice of surrender to the creator of everything, and to step in and engage in your personal discipleship prayerfully through the context of your healthy church, then that's what we're coming to is this crossroad, where we're all at the answer, follow me.
Tuck Choate 6:52
And you mentioned, you have to own this. And you showed a picture towards the end of the sermon of the levels of engagement, right? Oh, my level, I
Bennett Holloway 7:01
almost had that. At the beginning. I actually did have it at the beginning of the sermon as part of my intro. But I wanted to sit in a little bit more time of defining what it means to be a disciple, because that can be many interpretations of that. And then I found myself waiting far too long to get into Ephesians. So I took those levels of engagement and use at the end. But that is, it's blooms theory. It's a taxonomy on walking through that moment where thought shifts into action behavior actually changes based on the level of ownership, or engagement someone has with a value that's presented any
Tuck Choate 7:44
value anything. No, in this case, we're specifically talking about the personal relationship.
Bennett Holloway 7:49
Right? So yeah, so this this, this, this paradigm that we see on this is really meant for the human behavior, but it's any value, but I'm giving it in the context of valuing your discipleship with Christ responding to the follow me wanting to walk where he walked, speak, when he spoke, and live as he lived, to look more like him and spend all of eternity worshiping Him. That's the question, do we value that? And a lot of us are in all over that spectrum. And we've been all over that spectrum. And so it's, it's a difficult question when we're asked.
Tuck Choate 8:25
Yeah, so the first three levels are awareness, pondering and value. And then there's that gap,
Bennett Holloway 8:33
right? There's a behavioral gap. There's this, there's this massive Grand Canyon between valuing something and reprioritizing things. It's, it's that moment where you go from, some people call that 18 inch journey, where it's head knowledge to heart transformation. I would argue that to a degree when it comes to following Christ. This is that moment of salvation, where things are rearranged when it comes to choosing to be a disciple of Christ, right. I'm not just talking about accepting the truth that he spoke. I'm not talking about the the understanding of yes, the 10 commandments are good, like valuing the 10 commandments. I'm talking about the all end. I deserve this. He did that. I will respond with a rearranged life in light of this revelation. And so that behavioral gap is a big one. And and in a million different Valley. You can plug it any any way you want. It's tough. Some people are fairweather fans. They value the Dallas Cowboys, but they don't they're not willing to wear their jersey in public, especially after they lose, right? And so there's this there's this. There's this idea behind. What do you believe that actually changes the way you prioritize? You can do the same thing with goal setting It's the same thing with new year's resolutions is the same thing with understanding how to live healthy, and exercise routine. You can do the same thing and in parenting, or disciplines in life, or overconsumption, or minimalizing, or some simple living, like all of it sits in this spectrum. And we sit all over the place, but I wanted to hone in and focus on our personal discipleship process.
Tuck Choate 10:25
And this speaks to me personally, so much in the last few years here, because if you remember, when I came to this church, I was a little overwhelmed by it never been somewhere quite like this. And I was raised with head knowledge. And that is all that that's where we lived. It was head knowledge. And it wasn't until I got here and had a conversation with you, that you told me about that at an 18 inch distance, where I really realized that I've got an awareness. And I've, I've got all the way up to valuate. Yeah, but I hadn't reorganized and reprioritized into owning and, you know, when I look back over the last couple years, I've seen a bigger transformation in my life in the last two or three years than I have in the previous 30 something years. And because of the difference from going from Step three, to steps four and five,
Bennett Holloway 11:20
well, what's important to recognize here is you can jump in, and if you find yourself in that same spot that tuck just described, read Ephesians, one through three, these three chapters, it clearly states why or how someone can go from, you know, a valuing head knowledge to heart transformation. It's only by the power of the Holy Spirit. It's only by God Himself, having sent someone to help us in this time, to bring us to life and equip us with a relationship with him. So, so what's amazing about the story is, you may, you may attribute some things to some people conversations or aha moments. But the reality is, it's it's God doing it in you revealing Himself to you, and taking every thought captive as a reprioritize as your perspective in a biblical worldview that's built on grace that's built on experiencing him, love you, and know you, and see you and forgive you, and equip you and do everything for you and to you that you don't deserve. And that's the part where sometimes head knowledge, can't compute. Because that experiential relationship with Him is the game changer. And we see it all throughout Scripture. So it's that, that I just, I'm so thankful for a God that cares that much for tuck. I'm thankful for a God that cares that much for Bennett, that he not only is willing to think of everything that I've done wrong, but do everything to overcome it. We didn't meet halfway. No, no, he went the entire distance. And I'm I'm, I'm nothing without him completely dead in Ephesians, nothingness. And he brought me to life. And so before time even knew this would happen. So it's just an exciting thing. And it's sometimes something that's difficult to actually talk about, because we'd rather check the boxes. We'd rather do the lists, we'd rather look the part. We'd rather wear the masks, we'd rather stay busy and ignore the tough work. But that's a critical aspect of what it means. Because if we're in the discipleship pathway, if we're engaging in personal discipleship, then that is surgery. Things that are of our flesh are being cut away. Because we we should be looking more like him. So the Holy Spirit can Vic's we have to be habitual repentance before the throne, saying I'm sorry, I shouldn't have I see it like you see, it gives me boldness and strength to grow my faith Jesus, the author and the Perfecter so that I can see all things like you do. Give me a burden for the last. And we'll begin to see what ends up happening. So engaging in personal discipleship isn't just you doing the things, but it's actually depending on God and surrendering to Him and stepping into the life of a local church that is hopefully working towards health that is hopefully obedient to Ephesians chapter four. And specifically, I like to hone in on verse 12. And it says for the equipping of the saints, for the work of service, some of your version state for the ministry, to the building up of the Body of Christ. So there's been equipping that takes place for the ministry to be through the people of the church, not to the pastor's, not to the leadership, but through the members of the church, there is ministry, there is work that must take place. For what? For the church to grow? No, not exclusively, for things to look really good. No, definitely not. For us to have a lot of high energy and good entertainment. No, that's not it. For us to have all the baby's diapers changed. And we got 35 volunteers back there covering 45 babies. No, that's not the motive. The motive is to in the Scripture, it says to build up the church, you build up the church in multiple ways, one in strength, and in boldness, remembering what God has done in our lives, encouraging one another. There's that type of building up. But there's also actual building up evangelism and sharing the gospel, and more people will come and more people will be exposed to the goodness of God, to the love of the Father, that may be very different than what they've experienced out in the world. And so it's our personal engagement in discipleship is to what end as for the glory of God, in the Bride of Christ. And so if we shift our perspective to feed me, make me smart. I'm not getting what I want out of this, too. How can I be used by you God today in church? And how can I grow in my personal discipleship, so that I can experience you move empower more. That's a paradigm shift. And that goes from value to reprioritizing, to owning in the behavior model that we see.
Tuck Choate 16:56
One of the big ideas and a shift in perspective that I heard recently is we need to stop thinking about ourselves having a soul. He says, we don't have a soul. We're not We're not bodies with a soul. We are souls that temporarily have a body. Yeah. Because the soul lasts forever. It's eternal. It's true. It's
Bennett Holloway 17:18
the most true thing. Right? Yeah. And
Tuck Choate 17:20
it's just temporarily for, you know, a couple couple of decades that we have a body. But we we prioritize that so much that we forget about, about our eternal soul and guiding it and getting it ready for the rest of eternity.
Bennett Holloway 17:35
Yeah, we're so limited in the temporal, but we forget, man, that's so good. I love that.
Tuck Choate 17:42
So you mentioned you know, all of this is for for the ministry. And I want to kind of sit there for a second and say, what does the work of the ministry look like in the body of Christ? You know, we and you mentioned specifically, it's not the leadership, it's not just the pastor, it's not the staff. But it's each member playing a vital role, utilizing their spiritual gifts to serve one another in love. And you mentioned three key aspects that we're doing here at Temple to kind of get ready and prepare our members for the ministry, you mentioned, small groups, the intro to Temple course and the gifting classes. And I know that here on the podcast, we've mentioned so many times about small groups, which I don't want to minimize, but we've mentioned it before. But talk to me through the intro to Temple course and the gifting classes because the I don't think those are quite as well known. Yes.
Bennett Holloway 18:36
So the small groups, I'll just give one line for this understanding, I walked through the multitudes to the inner circle that he that that Jesus displayed, always inviting people into a deeper relationship of intimacy with Him, recognizing that has to take place in a church or sighs that has to take place in order for discipleship to occur. So if you're not a small group, join, join, go to temple dot church, forward slash small dash groups, go there. Look at the list, shoot emails, join one. It's amazing. It's
Tuck Choate 19:11
been updated recently. It's very easy to find something you're looking for. Do
Bennett Holloway 19:16
it. Alright. Step two, Intro to temple. Okay. So what I mean we've had this in the past and a way that some people describe this as a new members class or a one on one class and, and so what we really want to make sure that we do is because we've got a we've got a very wide spectrum of people in our congregation. We've got some people that attend that were founders of this campus of this church that came from tabernacle, back and 56 I think to start temple.
Tuck Choate 19:48
You upgraded from a tabernacle to a temple. I never knew that.
Bennett Holloway 19:51
Isn't that incredible? Yes. Yes. tabernacle Baptist Church planted temple. Yeah. Isn't that funny? That's fun. We're what are we going to call it? Nevermind. Alright, so So, we're a church plant. And we've got some people that have been here a really, really long time. We're also in the context of a military community, where we've got a lot of transitions. And a lot of young families that are here, we've had a weekday preschool that's incredibly successful at bursting at the seams that has a longevity of a positive reputation in the community. We've launched temple Christian Academy, and and it's going incredibly well now in its second year, and so we're maxing out the building usage in almost every possible way. Every single day of the week, we've got a thriving upward ministry that's taking place right now, we're in the midst of the season. And so we have a large number of young families of just checking us out. We've got a large demographic of older people in our community, because New Bern is a fantastic retirement destination. It's a location that that many people move down to, and that many people are moving towards after they've gotten a taste of what community is like in a small colonial town on the water when they've been in military. So when they're getting out of the service, they're moving here with their families, and we've got the schools, we've got these ministries. And so we've got a lot of things and a lot of transition. So we've got a group of people, but I've been here a really long time, and the church has gone through a lot. And honestly, there's things that have shifted and changed in different seasons. So they may not be fully aware of where we are today and where we're headed. The Essentials of of what we believe we're just trying to make sure that we have a good onboarding process that would benefit people that have been members for 40 years, but would also benefit people that are just interested in figuring out who we are in an expedited way. So we've developed this course, that's called Intro to temple, where we walk through who we are, what we believe in an engaging way, that allows people not just to get to know staff to be equipped with our resources to study on their own, but also to engage in getting to know some other people in the group. So we've limited the groups to 20 people can register at a time, we've got them available online for people to sign up for, we're only doing one group every month. So we'll be putting through 240 people every year through this class, and the class is three weeks long. The first two weeks are highly engaging, and and they're working towards understanding joining the church baptism, the virtues, our bylaws, the way that we operate, and the heart disposition that we have to serve other people. Throughout it. We're also participating in discipleship by giving homework where we get to work through devotionals, and work through scripture, and pray and engage in journaling, as we work through the content that we're teaching. And so what our prayer is, is that as people sign up and attend, not only they're getting a better understanding of where we're at a clearer picture of our next step, but they're also equipped with resources to learn and grow, to better understand our church. And they're equipped with an opportunity to dive deeper into scripture, and to hopefully cultivate Sunday to Sunday, a little bit more depth in their intimacy with how they handle the word, and how they pray, and how they journal. And so we've got this course. And so we've got the first two Sundays of every month or that, and then after that, if you're if you join the church, or you're a member of the church, you come to the third Sunday, and the third Sunday is driven towards evangelism. It's driven towards your testimony. It's driven towards understanding, we are outwardly focused, and it's equipping our people. So everyone that goes through into the temple can leave having understood one, salvation, two, membership, three ordinances for general church structure, and five, how God has drastically transformed them, and are able to talk about it comfortably, or have resources that they can access so they're informed. And so intro to Temple is not just for people that want to join the church, Intro to Temple we're developing in a way to where it'll radically improve and equip the saints to have a better understanding of all the ministries that are taking on that are happening at Temple. So that's intro to temple and in Intro Template, we're driving towards small groups. We're showing them all the ministries we have. We're working through, praying towards understanding that each one of them is gifted and called by God, if they've accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. If they agree with our vision, then they have a place that they need to serve and get plugged in. Because Because what they have only they can bring it And the church will be edified and matured through what they have to offer. And so that's intro temple. And then the last one is a spiritual gift. So this ministry is driving towards, it's really honing in on what Scripture teaches in the New Testament with the equipping of the Holy Spirit, and the unique gifting that believers have to experience depth in that personal relationship with Jesus Christ, but also praying for the manifestations of the of the power of the Holy Spirit, to glorify the sun, in everyday life as we navigate things. And so we study the Scriptures on what it says about gifts of the Holy Spirit, we take into consideration ways that we are individually gifted, and uniquely wired. And the reality that there's a place either a ministry that's happening now that, that God's going to really move in power through you in or you're gonna come to the table with a unique situation, that we need to launch a new ministry. And that ministry is based on the giftings that God's given you, and the passion, the vision that you have. So this is beautiful balance, all sitting under the vision of temple, but how we can really experience the saints doing the ministry, through high level of education, through intentional patterns of discipleship for all ages and stages. And so it's an onboarding process. And and it's an exciting one, but those the three examples? That's a lot, right, let's just three, yeah, we've got more things coming and actually more things happening. But that's a good entry level opportunities for people that may find themselves on different different levels of engagement at Temple.
Tuck Choate 26:47
So all of that is for, you know, maturing our church, which was another point that you have is that the idea that we need to be defining our church by growing our members in Christ's likeness, in their faith. And we need to kind of contribute to that collective growth, by a few different things, by, you know, growing the members and getting them to become mature instead of young in their faith, right, speaking the truth and love. And then one of the things that I loved was that you mentioned your children and growing up kind of that next generation of making sure that they have Christ likeness as their priority. So talk us through this idea of maturing the church. And what that would look like for as we go forwards, in our, in our church here, specifically at Temple.
Bennett Holloway 27:45
So the way that I would describe it is really, what do we have to offer that allows people an opportunity, if they chose to engage in their personal discipleship to experience an environment that would foster maturity, because the the, the, the issue here is, I don't want you to think that just doing a thing makes you mature. All things are by the revelation of God, through the Holy Spirit glorifying the son. Okay. And so, your growth, some people grow and mature in their relationship with Christ at different speeds than others, different people learn and process and, and understand or comprehend things at different speeds. So we can't have a cut paste thing. So if you do this, then we know this will be the outcome. If you do this, then we know you will be mature. But as a pastor, my primary objective is to do everything in my control, to be able to at least create an environment where there are less barriers, less excuses, less distractions, and things are fixed and focused on Jesus Christ, not our cloud, not our church, not even our size, but knowing that this is an environment where maturity can be cultivated. And our prayer is that that maturity, it isn't cultivated in the building, but it's cultivated in our prayer closets. It's cultivated at those early mornings when we get into his word. It's cultivated when we lay our heads down, and thank him for all that he did, and showed us and provided for us that day. It's cultivated in those difficult situations where we can only reach out to a friend in our church that understands and is there for us. It's cultivated in times of loss, or in difficult seasons, that we see him rule and reign like those are the things that I am praying for, for us as a church that we keep working towards opportunities to see him do that. what only He can do? And quit thinking that the ball is better in our hands? Does that make sense? Yeah, so we're not trying to make little Bennett's, we're not trying to make little temple lights, we're not Christians maturing in their apprenticeship means that we are doing everything we can to point them towards walking where he walked, sitting under his teaching, and living as he lift. And as time goes, I know that we will look more like Him. That is what sanctification is, and it will not we will not be done. Talk, spoiler alert, until we are in His presence. And so that's either at His second coming, let's go or after we've died. And we've exhausted that temporal life that we've been stewarded. That's it. And so, there's so much grace in that. Because that, guess what now all of a sudden, I know, there's not an expectation of me being perfect until I'm in his presence, right. But there's also this deep seated desire compound by the love of experience in him to live like, like him, knowing that living by the Bible works, getting closer and closer, thy will be done in my life, like, that's what I want. And so, maturity in Christ would be cultivated by a church that really focuses on creating opportunities for people to take that next step and their discipleship process. And so we've got some things that we're doing, we've got some things behind the scenes that we're continuing to work on, right, we've got some books on spiritual formation that we're working with. But we're doing this training, and we're doing these teachings in our leadership teams, and our deacons and our staff. And we're also providing it to the congregation to members. And it's a fantastic opportunity for us to grow. So that's what it looks like to grow in maturity. Now, when you look at the next generation, right when we talked about that. That's, that is like what we are doing, through all the ministries that we're doing, right. And so if we're, if someone's thinking up a ministry to do, and it doesn't really align with this process of discipling and evangelism, this mission outward focus minded, then we're probably not gonna do that right. Now. We're gonna hit pause, saying no is important, just like saying, yes, that's important. And so we don't need to say yes to every single idea that pops into our mind. But we want to only want to say yes to the ones that are in alignment with what he's wanting to do here. And so when it comes to the next generation, that the Academy, a TCA, coding, and these other teachers, they're driving towards right now, every single morning, they go into chapel, and they do worship. And they sit into the teaching, and the teaching that they're sitting in right now, as they're walking through spiritual formation. They're walking through disciplines and practices that we see displayed in Christ, but also commanded by Christ. And they're meant for us today to have healthy rhythms of life and balance that are centered around Christ. I was not taught that in elementary school, I went to public school, I was not taught any of these things. I wasn't even taught that in church. And so I'm so proud of the intentionality that them and the weekday preschool, I just heard testimony about a parent that was so frustrated, because her child continued to come back and share the gospel to her. Praise God, that these children are being equipped with what is true, what is eternal, what is impactful? Because each and every single step that they take, is deepening their intimacy with God. And it's advancing their maturity in Christ. And so we're doing that through Wednesdays through Awana. We're doing that through upward all that ministry that's taking place those sweet kids, it's happening in every corner of this building. And in temple students, Alex and Jess are doing an incredible job pouring into the students as they walk through the Old Testament. And it's something that I'm just so proud of putting on put a spotlight on these things, because God is moving and and it's so exciting to get to see him do it. Wonderful.
Tuck Choate 34:29
Well, I want to thank you for walking us through personal discipleship. We mentioned before we started the podcast I said I know this is something that is really close to your heart. And you said Yeah, it is a lot of things are
Bennett Holloway 34:47
an issue sometimes.
Tuck Choate 34:49
But you know, I see this coming through as this is one of the main things that is a drive towards success not only of of a church as a cult elective, but most importantly to the members individually. Sorry. So as we wrap up, is there anything that you want to highlight that we haven't talked about
Bennett Holloway 35:09
me and I would just strongly, strongly encourage, because sometimes when you walk through stuff like this, a scheme of the devil is to try to leverage where we fall short. And a method the accuser really spends a lot of time in, isn't leveraging shame, and guilt, and using words like disqualified or unworthy. And I would just say, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop. Because that's, that's not of Christ. And if you're feeling these feelings of I'm not good enough. I just want you to know that one, you're right. And to no one else is, right, every single one of us are not able to do it on our own. We need the Holy Spirit. And God the Father loves each and every single one of us in an unmerited way, which is difficult to to compute, but we cannot lose it. And the weird thing is, you can't earn more of it. And so the encouragement is, being self aware is the key. Understanding how he sees you is the next step. Once we acknowledge where we're at, but we recognize that how he loves us, it is this goodness, and this love that compels us towards this process of saying yes, to the command, follow me. And so, every single one of us are all over the spectrum. We're all a bunch of mess ups. You're in good company. So I would just strongly, strongly, strongly encourage, talk with someone jumping our website, get involved, come on Sundays, getting a small group sign up, you go to temple that church forward slash events, you can sign up for any of the intro to Temple classes that we have up right now. They're limited only 20 per class. So you can do that for the month of March, and even the month of April. So jump online, do that. If you got any questions reach out to us, but we love you. And we're so thankful that we get to serve a God that pursues us like he has. Amen.
