Putman Podcast Pops

In this episode live from NSTA, Tanya, a staff member at the Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos, CA, shares what makes the museum special — from Wright Model B replicas and a real 747 cockpit to drones, simulators, and VR. She talks about their field trips and summer camps for kids K–8, the excitement around the Artemis launch, and the museum's popular "Biggest Little Air Show" featuring a drone show.

Hello again.

I am excited.

I am sitting here with Tanya, who was graciously en- willing to come chat with us as she was sitting here enjoying her break, and I came and disrupted it.

So Tanya, thank you so much.

Of course.

Of course.

Welcome to the pod.

How are you?

I'm excited to be on the pod.

Good.

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do?

Sure.

Um, so I work at an aviation museum.

Um, we run field trips and summer camps and kind of all things hands-on fun.

So lots of airplanes, lots of helicopters, and lots of family fun.

Super exciting.

Mm-hmm.

And you, I think you had mentioned something about summer camps?

Yes.

So can students come and actually get into planes and things, or how is it actually, what levels do you have?

Yeah, so we, um, cater to kinder through eighth grade.

Oh, great.

Um, and that's incoming for the fall year, so we take those little young ones at four and a half- Mm-hmm … which is fun.

Yes.

Um, we have a ton of cockpits that you can get into, a ton of simulators.

We have a giant 747 outside in our back, area, and you can go to the cockpit and sit in there, and it's an actual plane, so that's really fun.

Oh, neat.

Yeah.

That's our most popular exhibit, so.

I can imagine.

As an adult, I would run to that as well.

Yes.

Do you have any virtual reality simulations that you use?

We do have VR, um, that we bring out occasionally, but, we don't use it as often as we'd like to.

Have you seen any uptick in interest or anything with the new Artemis launch and successful landing?

Have you seen anything?

Yeah, so we actually, as a staff, actually watched the launch.

Mm-hmm.

And then we actually had spring break camp going on at that same time.

Neat.

And the kids were watching it during their break, like when they were having lunch.

They were just kind of watching the cameras that NASA had on.

Mm-hmm.

So all of them were interested.

It was really cool.

I think it's just neat to see kids excited about something.

Absolutely.

Absolutely.

Especially today, you know?

Yeah, absolutely.

And, and so at your museum as well, which if you wanna plug it, you totally can, um- Oh, it's- Yeah … the Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos.

What range of airplanes and things do you have?

Ooh.

Do you have, like, old, new?

That's a really good question.

We actually have a variety.

So from early gliders, like we have a Wright Model B.

Really fun.

Neat.

Not the full scale, 'cause Smithsonian has that, but we have a smaller scale.

Um, to dirigibles, which are like hot air balloons- Mm-hmm … gliders to airplanes to helicopters Stanley Hiller, invented helicopters, so he, um… We have a ton of that, and then we also have, like, drones and unmanned aerial vehicles, things like that.

So- Mm-hmm … wide, wide range of things.

How exciting.

Yeah.

Really, really cool.

I want to arrange a trip.

Yes, please do.

L- look for us- Absolutely … and come talk to us.

Yeah.

I'm gonna say, "Where's Tonya?" Exactly.

I'm there all the time.

Okay.

So yes, please.

I love it.

Well, if somebody was interested in going to your museum, where should they go?

So you got a website.

Yeah.

You said an Instagram.

What should they check out?

Um, we have a website, so hiller.org.

We're on Snapchat, we're on Instagram, all I think just Hiller Aviation Museum.

Um, but yeah, come visit us.

We are the most driven-by museum because we're right off 101.

Okay.

So you see us more than you visit us.

Ah.

Um, but once you get in there- I'm gonna change that … it's so much fun.

We just had our runway.

We do, um, a Biggest Little Air Show.

We have a dr- and that's, like, a drone show.

Mm-hmm.

We just do a ton of things, ton of events.

Very family-friendly.

That sounds so exciting.

There's an event in Louisville that they do 'cause the Kentucky Derby is in Louisville.

Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.

And it's a whole month celebration.

Wow.

In M- yes.

In, in… It is, it is epic.

But one of the things they do is a balloon glow.

Oh.

And 'cause they have a balloon race, a hot air balloon race.

What?

And the night before, depending on the weather, um, the balloons are all on the ground and they light them up and it's this glow.

It's really pretty cool.

Wait, stop.

That sounds amazing.

Yeah.

I know.

So maybe we need to do a little cross balloon glow thing.

We do.

We do.

We do, for sure.

Yes.

You come to our museum, I'll come to your balloon glow.

Yes.

That sounds awesome.

Totally.

Why are we not in charge?

I don't know.

We should be.

Mm-hmm.

We should be.

I want to.

I don't want to.

I don't want to, actually.

No, no.

No, no.

I want the paycheck- Yes … but I don't want everything else.

Exactly, exactly.

Well, Tonya, this has seriously been amazing.

Yay.

Um, and I'm not just fluffing because I don't need to.

Uh, I… This has been a wonderful chat with you.

Yes.

Amazing.

And I look forward to… Actually, I will absolutely be following up with you and I look forward to- Okay, good … to come.

And I'm gonna come to the museum.

Please do.

Please do.

Mm-hmm.

Yes.

Awesome.

Thank you so much.

Thank
