Authorities in High Point, North Carolina, say a potentially deadly situation was stopped outside Wesley Memorial Methodist Church after 44-year-old William S. Milliken III was arrested in the parking lot Sunday morning. Police say Milliken, described as armed and wearing camouflage and body armor, had two flamethrowers, two crossbows, a CO2-powered launcher resembling a handgun, more than 500 rounds of ammunition, knives, duct tape, and oxycodone pills in his truck. Mayor Cyril Jefferson said court documents also showed “a notebook with addresses of churches and schools,” adding Milliken is believed to have mental health issues. “Most importantly, no one was hurt,” Jefferson said. Police Chief Curtis Cheeks III praised officers, saying they “prevented a potentially dangerous situation from escalating.” Milliken is being held on $250,000 bond.

Southern Baptist pastor David Hughey has stepped down as lead pastor of Geyer Springs First Baptist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas, after his wife, Louanne Hughey, finalized a divorce following nearly 40 years of marriage. Court records show Louanne filed in February and cited “general indignities,” alleging Hughey “would humiliate me, intimidate me through his words,” and that “my life with the Defendant [was] intolerable.” Hughey flatly denied the claims, saying, “My wife’s allegations … are totally untrue,” describing their issues as only “normal marital arguments.” Though the Southern Baptist Convention has no rule automatically disqualifying divorced pastors, Hughey said he chose to resign because he did not want to become “a distraction,” telling his congregation, “I feel certain my decision is led by God and best for our body.”

Journey keyboardist and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Jonathan Cain is marking America’s 250th anniversary with a new patriotic anthem, “The Winds of Freedom,” calling it both a tribute to the nation’s founding ideals and a spiritual challenge for the present. Cain said, “Freedom’s a choice,” adding that it means “free speech… the Constitution, our civil rights — everything matters.” The 76-year-old songwriter, best known for co-writing “Don’t Stop Believin’,” says his faith now drives his music, crediting author Eric Metaxas and his wife, pastor Paula White-Cain, for shaping that path. Reflecting on his own survival of the 1958 Our Lady of the Angels school fire, Cain said his father told him, “You were saved for music.” And on America’s future, he offered a blunt message: “We all have to wake up and love our country. We can’t sleepwalk through this.”

Theologian Carl Trueman says the West’s decline is rooted in a false view of humanity as “self-creating and autonomous,” warning that technology and AI now make that autonomy seem plausible while threatening to “dehumanize us in a way we haven’t witnessed before.” Speaking in London at ARC 2026, Trueman told Christian Today that neither cultural Christianity nor nationalism can restore the West. He said the political left often blurs a vital line, arguing that “the tendency of the Left to conflate nationalism and patriotism is an unfortunate one.” Patriotism, he said, is love of country; nationalism claims superiority over others. Trueman also criticized the Church’s “complicity” on issues like no-fault divorce, cited Melanie Phillips, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, and Kemi Badenoch, and urged Christians to rebuild society locally by being “kind, hospitable, respectful, and stand for the truth.”

South Carolina is moving to block so-called “debanking,” after Republican Governor Henry McMaster signed the Guarantee Banking Act, House Bill 5538, into law. The measure, which takes effect at the start of the new year, bars major financial institutions, credit card companies and payment processors from denying services based on a customer’s religious practice, political speech, opinions or associations. Customers who are denied service can demand a written explanation, and the law says a vague claim based on “internal standards or policies” is not enough. Alliance Defending Freedom senior counsel Matt Sharp praised the move, saying, “No one should be denied access to basic financial services based on their political or religious beliefs.” The law follows allegations involving JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America, though Bank of America insists, “Religious beliefs are not a factor in any account-closing decision.”

The U.S. men’s national team is headed to the World Cup round of 16 after a hard-fought 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, then marked the moment with prayer led by defender Mark McKenzie, ending with a teamwide “Amen!” But the celebration was tempered by the loss of star striker Folarin Balogun for Monday’s clash with Belgium in Seattle after a controversial red card. Even Merriam-Webster weighed in online, saying, “That was not the definition of a red card.” Former referee Andy Davies agreed, writing that Balogun “can feel unfortunate” because the challenge was “purely accidental.” Down to 10 men, the Americans still sealed it when Malik Tillman blasted home a direct free kick in the 82nd minute, while coach Mauricio Pochettino’s squad drew praise for its public display of faith and unity.
