Yo, what's going on? It's Korbin Amaya, also known as Nuvusan, and look, here's the thing. Music isn't just entertainment. It's an escape.
I've had days where all I want to do is just sit down, listen to music, and write some lyrics. Or draw, you know? Just sit there and do that. But I always get sucked out, and I feel like there's things in life that prevent you from doing those.
It saves you a bit, because you can't go full mad into your own craft, you know? You can't just do that. It's important to know your limits for what you're into. But it's also good for you to explore how far you think you can go.
If you can stay up all night and, I don't know, practice anything, that would be good. But it's about, I think it's about quality, not quantity. So if you think you can just flush down a bunch of thoughts, and it's not really sat on enough, you know? I'm not saying become depressed, I'm just saying sit on something.
Sit on something that resonates with you. Something that adds flavor to yourself, or just some compassion for your own passion, you know? It's not bad, but there's definitely a lack of it. I don't know.
At least it feels that way. Most artists are very conceited, you know? Whatever's going on in their mind, it's very clandestine. My journey so far, I've explored many different artists.
I don't find it something to brag about. Not every artist is great, but it's something to just kick off your day, honestly. I find that I want to kick off my day with rock, or hip-hop, or just the solo cumbia.
Like, oh. I can tell you that cumbia is something that drives a country. The working people, the working class, they would get up, they have a playlist.
Most Latinas have a playlist in their car, and they just have it playing every time they get in. And it's like they're, it's what drives them, you know? But let me tell you about cumbia. It's special.
That's for sure. A good example, if you want to get into cumbia, if you haven't heard of what the best is yet, I would say Eniceto Molina, the legend, he's been a huge influence on me. But also on a lot of people who play the accordion, because that's his main instrument.
His music is raw, simple, but it grabs you, you know? There's this authenticity, you know? It's in the kind of music, you just don't hear it. You feel like it's the soundtrack to every Salvadorian party, and I love that it connects me to my roots. It also gets me going, too.
You can dance to it like merengue, but it's, Salvadorian music, it's a bit slower, so you really have to feel the funk with your foot. You can't just hop into it like you're on fire. People hear cumbia and think, oh, that's just some dance music, like I was just saying.
I mean, cumbia's got soul. It's for dancing, but it's also about the resilience and the families and the stories behind the rhythm. It's like, for example, when I'm playing my guitar in my room, or in stages sometimes, just performing in general or writing my music, I try to channel that energy.
Just grab ahold of your roots, know what your last name means, you know what I mean? It'll get you far. Being painfully authentic is the start of a long road of pride, I feel like. I was going on a bit of a rant there about cumbia.
Anyways, I was just trying to say, I want to keep it as real as I can. If you're sleeping on cumbia right now, go give it a listen. Aniceto Molina.
Here's a short clip of his music. Well, I hope that was worth it for you. I definitely had my foot tapped in there for a bit.
So, now let's just switch gears to some hip-hop and rock. Let's test the waters here. These two worlds are completely, almost different.
The passion is there. I think after the rock movement in the 90s, hip-hop really stepped up with all the different bands that came out, like Cypress Hill and Motang, Biggie, Wisconsin rap, Memphis rap, West, Coast Rap, Public Enemy was a great one. There's also a lot of individual artists that I look up to.
There's actually a lot of new artists, like Kendrick Lamar. He's a new artist from the 2000 era. But it's also another form of an escape.
But it's more intense, you know? It's got longevity. It can fly. Like, that can pick you up on days when you want to just spew your poetry out fast.
It helps release a lot of stress, I find. Like, just in my room with my Akai system, I have an MPD 226 pad in my room. And I just go in there when I'm stressed, hit some beats on it, and make up my own sounds.
I don't necessarily follow the rulebook, but that's what makes me me. I don't care. I just do whatever comes to my ear.
And I take influence from rock for my hip-hop songs. And I take influence from hip-hop for my rock songs. I just scoff it off.
I don't care. That's another thing. I just let it go.
I let myself do me. And that's important for anybody that wants to be an upcoming artist. Just do you.
Don't care what other people have to say. So when I make my own music, I blend it all. Hip-hop, cumbia, rock.
That's what makes my sound my sound. Well, this is a work in progress. And I just wanted to say a few things off the top of my mind.
And I think I got some of the ideas I wanted to get out, down. I'll definitely be more prepared with explosive ideas next round coming up. And I just wanted to quickly say, before I dive away, that I want to break down what Nubusan actually means.
Because it's not just a random name. But it is a random name. I just completely made it up.
Nuvusan is a fusion of two words. Nu and vusan. Which to me represents the idea of constantly reinventing myself through my art.
Every day is a chance to create something fresh. To find new meaning, new sounds, new ways to express what's inside. Nuvusan is like a play on word for the sun.
Like every day you wake up, it's a new sun outside. What do you know? Also, it's just music in general. And art.
Without art and music, I wouldn't be Nubusan. I let that create me. I don't make music.
You know, music makes me in a way. Anyway, thank you for listening. And have a good rest of your Thursday.
And a good weekend. And I'll see you on Wednesday. This is the Nuvusan Podcast.
