IN LOCAL NEWS,
The Madison Common Council rejected an aid program for local businesses on Tuesday. The 100,000 dollar proposal was set for local businesses in the Marquette neighborhood that were affected by the July shooting. On July 22nd, a shooting occurred killing Corey Ruiz, a 38-year-old man on Williamson and Baldwin streets. The proposal would have used the contingent reserve, however the city said it needed to save the money for that year. The Williamson Street Business Stabilization Support Program received 13 votes for and seven against. However, the proposal failed as 15 votes are needed to approve the budget amendment. Body camera funding has been added to the 2027 Capital Budget. The Common Council also refused to provide the Office of the Independent Police Monitor with an additional $28,500 for staffing and service funding.
IN NATIONAL NEWS,
Trump gave $45,000 dollars worth of holiday gifts to White House aides. Four aides received large gifts. $45,000 dollars were given to executive assistant Natalie Harp, communications adviser Margo Martin, and deputy director of Oval Office operations Chamberlain Harris. $20,000 dollars were also given to the director of Oval Office operations Walt Nauta. This information was disclosed through financial disclosure forms published by the Trump administration last week. Harp, Martin and Harris make $150,000 dollars annually and Naulta is paid $175,000 dollars annually. A white house staffer claims the gifts were for the individuals rather than for their government duties, and therefore are permissible under legal standards.
IN ECONOMIC/International NEWS,
The Brent Oil Index hits $100 / barrel as fighting between the US and Iran in the Gulf escalated earlier on Tuesday. US oil remains trading around $96.45, also up today. This follows a US attack on Iranian-Flagged oil tankers, earlier in the day. According to US CENCOM, the attack was in response to Iran firing missiles over a US Naval Vessel twice over two days. Near simultaneously, Houthi attacks on a Saudi Oil Refinery, killing 73, also stoked fears as to the stability of the Middle Eastern (and thus global) oil markets as the Middle East produces about a third of the world’s oil. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Navy has warned crews of oil tankers near ports in Kuwait and Bahrain to immediately leave their vessels, saying the ships could be targeted in retaliation for U.S. attacks on Iranian tankers. This marks a continued trend of “tit-for-tat” strikes in the Gulf region which have, for the moment, shown little signs of stopping.

IN ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS,
US Department of Energy to provide billions in loans for reopening of a nuclear power plant in Iowa. The loan of up to two billion dollars would help NextEra Energy reopen the Duane Arnold nuclear power plant in Linn County, Iowa, which had ceased operating in 2020. NextEra, one of the nation’s largest power companies, announced last year that it planned to refurbish the plant’s reactor and seek regulatory approval to restart operations by the spring of 2029. Google has agreed to buy a portion of the plant’s electricity to help power data centers for artificial intelligence. No US nuclear power plant has ever been successfully restarted, but there are currently three attempts.

PASSING IT OVER TO SPORTS, HERE’S WITH AN UPDATE
Brewers storm back in the 9th inning to beat division rivals. Trevor Megill had been stellar in the last month but after loading the bases and giving up two runs in the 9th, the Brewers were down 3 to 1 in the bottom of the 9th inning. After a two out single by Christian Yelich and subsequent Home Run by Jackson Chourio they sent the game into extra innings. In the 10th inning a throw by Center Fielder Garrett Mitchell turned a routine fly out into a double play and set them up to win in the bottom of the 10th. 21 year old Luis Lara came up in the bottom of the 10th with one out and the bases loaded. Swinging on the first pitch, he walked off division rival Cubs to extend their NL central lead. With every game more pivotal as the season nears its end, a 9 game lead for the Brewers looks increasingly promising for another NL Central division title. The Brewers sit at 90 and 56, with the Cubs at 81 and 65 finishing the season series tonight at 6:40 pm. Logan Henderson and Kevin Gausman square off on the mound.
