The Green & White Report is a weekly live radio show at 11 a.m. on Sundays produced by the student reporters of Impact Sports. The show features sports news and debates from across Michigan State’s campus, as well as Detroit pro sports teams and the rest of the sports world.
Hi, guys. This is Jack David, producer of the Green and White Report. Just coming out here really quick to let you know. First twenty to thirty seconds of this episode wasn't recorded. You guys aren't missing much.
Speaker 1:We just kinda jump in with Joe talking about his poor stock options, and then we'll jump right into the rest of this show. So hopefully you guys enjoy it. Enjoy your Thanksgiving, and then we'll see you all next Sunday, 11AM sharp, either on the FM Airways or on Twitch.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Guess Gotta
Speaker 3:hold. Always gotta hold.
Speaker 2:Yes. We did not sell during the peak, now we're fighting in the dip. But it's okay. The diamond hands do not break, so it'll be all good. But, yes.
Speaker 2:Tim Marshall, our good friend, is back in Massachusetts. He has left us. Owen, thank you for coming in today. Course. Of course.
Speaker 2:How was your weekend up to this point?
Speaker 4:You know, it was a good time. Other than watching MSU get swept in hockey Yes. That was that was a weird feeling. I don't know. Wisconsin's very good, but I feel like MSU really beat themselves.
Speaker 4:I feel like we're we're we're definitely gonna talk about this later, but, I don't know. I it was it was cool to not watch football. Yeah. I I got the last, like, fifteen, twenty minutes of the game when I came in for, for the the hockey practice call last night, but, you know, I I only got a little bit of heartbreak, not the entire thing.
Speaker 2:Yes. It was a rough day overall. We'll be talking about that in just a minute, but gonna give some positivity for this morning on some people on their morning commutes.
Speaker 4:It's just good to be alive.
Speaker 2:Yes. Exactly. Yes. For those who do not know, the woman's soccer team here, one of the best in the nation. They're in the sweet 16 today.
Speaker 3:Oh, yes, baby.
Speaker 2:Yes. Playing the Colorado Buffaloes right at 1PM. So right after you turn off the green and white report, turn on ESPN plus, watch the University of Colorado. Realizing that might be a call to action, so don't actually do that. Do that if you'd like.
Speaker 2:Yes. Do that if you choose to do that, hopefully.
Speaker 3:I was gonna say the Haas man's gonna look for his, deepest tournament run, I believe, since he's come here at MSU. So, hopefully, they can, come out with a victory here tonight or today, I should say, at 1PM. And, yeah, just a it's a great season overall from the women's soccer team so far.
Speaker 2:Yes. The University of Milwaukee is who they beat four to one in the first round, then Wake Forest one to nothing on Thursday. Now they're playing the Buffalo. Should be a good matchup. We're gonna have to talk about the sad part of this weekend, unfortunately, in just a moment.
Speaker 2:Michigan State football falls to three and eight. They've lost eight games in a row now. They're up by 10, and they did could not finish off against the Iowa Hawkeyes. Kershaw McCray, great game. Two touchdowns.
Speaker 2:He hadn't scored since that USC matchup. It was nice to see him get back in the end zone. Mhmm. But now a lot of questions come up. Questions that might not be answered this offseason either, but still Michigan State has not gotten a Big Ten win this season.
Speaker 2:This might be the first season ever since
Speaker 3:I believe the fifties is the last time they had not won a single Big Ten game.
Speaker 2:Was it
Speaker 4:was it was before they joined the Big Ten. I'm Yeah. That that's what
Speaker 1:I was
Speaker 2:gonna say. Yeah. The first season ever not having a Big Ten win, which is just horrible. But we're gonna call the experts in so you we all don't have to talk about this forward. Jack Dale, would you like to call Jacob Mauer first?
Speaker 1:Yeah, can.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Awesome. Yes, our wonderful producer. But not too many positive takeaways. You could see it
Speaker 1:yes, seemed
Speaker 2:it seemed like there was going to be a few points. If Michigan State could have held on that 10 lead, it would have been being a team who was ranked just a week ago, but instead, they couldn't do it. Alessio looked pretty good. He had a pretty bad pick at one point. Mhmm.
Speaker 2:Micaiah Frazier was out, of course. Childs was out. Seemingly half the team was out. And now, you're if going to Ford Field, you have three tickets for the price of one. Everybody just giving free tickets.
Speaker 2:Yes. That's a real thing going on.
Speaker 3:Oh my gosh.
Speaker 2:Yeah. It's would be nice to get to the end of a season and not have half the tickets given out for free one year. It's been four years in a row that all of us have gotten to experience that. It's pretty sad to see, to put it lightly.
Speaker 3:No. It is, man. I mean, Jacob Bauer, he tweeted it when they announced it was bring a friend for free for Penn State. It was just it's a tradition that never dies. And unfortunately, it's a tradition that does need to die, and it needs to die fast.
Speaker 3:It's just so unfortunate, the situation we found ourselves here in the last four years. Obviously, you know, it's just it it's how it is, and it's just not much that we can do right now to make it better. Obviously, we talked about the violations last weekend that we suffered, due to ineligible players. That has just put us, you know, so far behind. And, you know, in a in a in a time right now where it feels like every single job, every single major job right now is open, you're just it feels like you're stuck in a position where you can't really make a lot of changes in terms of coaching or, you know, personnel, and you're sort of just gonna have to, you know, run this back next year and hope that they can, you know, figure it out and just hope that this is just one bad year that they can, you know, really rebound from and hopefully come back better next year, I wanna say.
Speaker 4:Yeah. I I I don't even I feel like there's so many things I can say that, you know, probably aren't fit for air. But, you know, there there's a lot there's a lot to be said about, I guess, the buy in, you know, how much these players actually wanna be on the field. It it feels like a lot of them don't. You know, looking at that at that availability report every week, you know, when there's when there's ten, fifteen guys out, you know, you have to wonder for for six and a half weeks if if, you know, so many guys have listed us out.
Speaker 4:You have to wonder if there's a couple quiet quitters in there. Yeah. So I I feel like, you know, after this week, we'll see a bunch of guys put their names into the portal. But you know what? If if if you're gonna quit on the team for half the season, I don't want you here.
Speaker 2:Yeah. I can understand. It's tough to wanna buy into a team
Speaker 5:right now, Joel.
Speaker 4:I mean, of course. I don't I don't blame the guys that, like like
Speaker 2:I I know I know what
Speaker 4:you're saying though. Yeah. That are kinda checked out, but I feel like, you know, not not wanting to play games to, to preserve your your portal stock to me, it you know? Well, it's I don't like it.
Speaker 2:It's the problem with college football as a whole right now. The fact that you can just train schools at any moment. It means that nobody is gonna buy into the bad situations. And that used to be when you would get your best players, the guys who stuck around, the ones who were there when you were doing the worst.
Speaker 3:That's the, yeah, that's the volatility with the transfer portal right there. I mean, Florida State has seen it. I feel like the last two years, just it's very hard for a team with guys who have not been there before and not having, you know, foundational guys who have been there on only at those schools. You know, you just don't really have that culture that you can really lean on when times get tough. Obviously, like I said, Florida State has really struggled with this.
Speaker 3:And right now, it just really feels like Michigan State is at this problem right now too. Not a lot of guys who have been here for a long time and just not a lot of guys who understand the culture and, you know, it's just really easy at that point for them to give up and really quit because, you know, they know they can just get a different opportunity somewhere else when they transfer. So it's hard to deal with, but, you know, it's something that every coach has to deal with now in this new transfer portal era. So just about making sure you can build your team right. And, unfortunately, they just really haven't been able to do that this year.
Speaker 2:Yes. Now Jack David has been manning the phones from far away. He's been making call after call. Kyle Keegan, how are you doing today?
Speaker 6:You know, I've been better. I've been worse. Currently trekking through. I believe we're now in Northwestern Indiana.
Speaker 7:Oh my Correct.
Speaker 6:And we'll be passing by Gary here shortly. So we just locked, but now two and a half hour out from East Lansing, just watch the Spartans drop their eighth straight. And about as good as you can be on this fine Sunday morning.
Speaker 2:Yes. We'll talk about the game and specifics in just a moment. But how was the Iowa Hawkeyes Stadium? How was that whole area of Iowa City?
Speaker 6:Oh, you know, I I think we would say we were really we had a really pleasant experience. Kinnick Stadium is beautiful. Definitely one of my favorites that I've been to. The press talks was really cool. Getting down on the field, seeing the view.
Speaker 6:Iowa fans, I thought, were pretty cool. Overall, pretty good. What did you think, Jacob? Yeah. I mean, it
Speaker 7:was cool that Iowa was booing, you know, when Iowa was bad. You know, it showed that they cared. It was, you know, pretty good day, though. I mean, there wasn't really a cloud in the sky from what I saw. And it, cool to see the stadium, of course, Two thirty kick there where you see, you know, the afternoon daylight and then transition to the night.
Speaker 7:So you kinda get both perspectives. You know, without talking about this Michigan State football team, stadium wise and fan wise, just for college football in general for Iowa, a plus.
Speaker 2:That's good. Good to hear. Well, okay. Last question before we hop into the actual game. What was the food like for you guys this week?
Speaker 6:You know, the press box food was alright. I mean, they did give out a lot of stuff. There were some options, and they had some sandwiches after the game that they were handing out, which was really sweet, but definitely not good hot dogs. And they were kinda serving this, like, Thanksgiving style meal, like mashed potatoes, turkey. You know, it's alright.
Speaker 6:Nothing crazy.
Speaker 2:Okay. That's a little disappointing here.
Speaker 3:That sounds pretty good.
Speaker 7:Yeah. I will say they did have these, like, pumpkin bars. Oh, yeah. Nice icing on top.
Speaker 6:The dessert was good.
Speaker 7:I I probably had three.
Speaker 2:Nice. There you go. Okay. Well, let's touch on the, the game that I don't think any of us really wanna talk about. But I
Speaker 6:gotta ask you Let's get through it.
Speaker 2:Yeah. From inside the stadium, they had that 10 lead, and that started to fall apart. How bad did that look in person?
Speaker 6:You know, you get a sense by covering this team throughout the whole season. You know? You get beaten down into the ground enough times where no matter how big the lead is or what point in the game it is, you kinda or at least I'll speak for myself here, have this thought that they're gonna find a way to lose somehow, until they prove me otherwise. So even when they were up 10, I I was really thinking like, hey. Until the clocks hit zero here, you know, I'm gonna expect this team to lose this football game just because that's what Michigan State has done this year, and that's what they've done for the most part the last four years is find ways to lose.
Speaker 6:And, you know, it was just a microcosm of the season again yesterday. You know? It seems like MSU's had two kinds of losses in conference play. They either get shellacked or, you know, they kinda get your hopes up like they did against Minnesota and then let them down in the fourth quarter in overtime. Just happened in the fourth quarter this time, but, you know, I think I could kinda see the writing on the wall, but there were definitely more optimistic moments this week than there are throughout most of the season.
Speaker 6:What what would you
Speaker 7:say, Jacob? Yeah. I mean, we were talking about it, like, was the greatest point of, like, how did we lose that game when we were up by 10 in the fourth quarter or when we had the football up by seven with three thirty to go. It's like, okay. If we were to lose this in regulation, not only would Iowa need to stop us twice and quickly, but their offense that has largely done nothing today would have to find a way to
Speaker 6:They had done nothing at that point besides a field goal.
Speaker 7:Yeah. Right. Second quarter. That was set up by a good punt return. So it's like, really, I'd had no faith in their offense.
Speaker 7:But, again, as Kyle has talked about, what faith should I put into this Michigan State football team? So you're kinda at the edge of your seat. You know, definitely good covering this compared to, you know
Speaker 6:Better than a blowout for sure. Right?
Speaker 7:But But you still expect them to lose. Yeah. I mean, that was it was at the point where it was a tie Michigan State or not even when it was a tie game. When we had to punt it over down by seven, it was kinda like, okay. We're gonna lose this in the other regulation or overtime, but it's just we didn't find that window to win, which is disappointing, for this team for sure, and each trade is just kinda ridiculous.
Speaker 7:Hard to say off the tongue. Yeah.
Speaker 2:Yes. The Spartans have struggled pretty mightily. Do you think they finish with no big 10 wins?
Speaker 6:I mean, yeah. I would say at this point, I expect them to go out and lose next week again at their o and eight in big ten play. They have had multiple opportunities so far this month to get that first win. And as I mentioned before, it kind of found a way to blow it, every single time. And, you know, it's it's on everyone that they they can't seem to finish sixty minutes and, you know, make that last play to finally get it done.
Speaker 6:So, yeah, I
Speaker 7:mean, regardless of who they
Speaker 6:were playing, I know it's Maryland's, but I do expect them to lose. Yeah. I know. I
Speaker 7:feel like honestly, like, looking down the stretch, we've talked about it in the Spartan Red Zone. Like, what is their best opportunity to win a football game? I feel like people don't talk about how much this Maryland game is winnable for Michigan State. And, like, it's kind of the thing of, like, oh, this Iowa team that was on the brink of the top 25, we took it down to the wider in their own place. So maybe we have some against the Maryland team that just wouldn't really be a home game for Michigan State.
Speaker 7:But at the same time, I mean, there's been so many points in games where it's like, how can you lose this football game that it happens? Or even somewhere, it's like, how can we not win this football game and you just get select? So I don't know which Michigan State team is gonna show up on Saturday, but if they were to win, we have not seen that Michigan State type team yet this season. Yeah. And I think another,
Speaker 6:you know, important point to remember, about, you know, this team is, like, not only have they lost all these games, but, you know, like and it's not just that they're finding ways to lose either. They're you expect it kind of just because they it hasn't happened. You know? That they're o and eight in big 10 play. There's no moral victories that you can take out of the positive things that happen in the game because it's an eight game losing streak.
Speaker 6:So you could say, yeah. The defense played excellent for fifty minutes yesterday. Sure. That's a positive. Alessio Milivojevic made some great throws, and those two touchdown passes to Chrishan McCray were awesome.
Speaker 6:Sure. That's a positive. But you just can't actually ride anything home about any of that stuff, and it doesn't actually help you at all because the bottom line is to save straight losses.
Speaker 2:Yeah. It's not not looking very pretty in East Lansing at the moment. I do wanna ask you about the quote from Jordan Hall this week. He was pretty much hyping up coach Smith saying that he really likes him as a guy and as a coach, and that he doesn't deserve the hate that he's getting. I wanna know from your side viewing every game in person from an upper deck, how does it look for the team?
Speaker 2:Do they look bought in? Does that seem like a true statement, or does it seem like an exaggeration of a bad situation?
Speaker 6:Well, you know, I I think, you know, reading body language, I it is it's difficult to do, you know, and it's something that you can often
Speaker 5:get in trouble yourself doing as
Speaker 6:a broadcaster. But, you know, I will say there have been moments throughout this season where not that I've necessarily questioned the effort of Michigan State as a team, but just wondered if they're all on the same page and kinda wonder, what the compete level is on a play by play by play basis just throughout the game. Just because it feels like a lot of the time, you know, when things start going wrong, they just let it snowball. When it rains, it pours. They have no ability to battle against adversity and try to overcome the challenges that present themselves with winning a football game, you know?
Speaker 6:And they can't get through sixty minutes, as I mentioned earlier. So I think that, you know, good on Jordan Hall for, saying, you know, the right thing and, you know, being well media trained. But I don't even know how much he necessarily believes that as much as it's him saying, you know, like, I'm gonna have my coaches back no matter what because that's the kind of player
Speaker 7:and person I have.
Speaker 6:Because, you know, Jordan's a good guy. He's not gonna lay Smith out on the line, but I'd imagine there's frustration all over the place. That's for sure. Because when you lose that much, never good, obviously.
Speaker 2:Yeah. You
Speaker 7:got We were talking about it before. Like, Jonathan Smith, after every press conference, always reiterates the fact that the staff is working. And I don't doubt that. I don't think they're just laying around saying, well, looks like this year isn't our year because, I mean, these guys are getting paid a good amount, and they want to keep on getting paid a good amount. And the way you do that is by keeping your job.
Speaker 7:And the way you keep your job is producing a good football product and, know, showcasing that out. And really, we've only seen that with Joe Rossi, the way he's been able to turn around this defense and, like, hey. I'm gonna go on the field and physically pump up my guys. But I do think his coaching staff is working, and I do think that these players see it. And the fact that Michigan State was even competitive in a game that, you know, they were more than two possession underdogs, I think, shows something.
Speaker 7:But showing of, like, they have still yet to coach a team to get a full sixty minutes out of them. And especially, I don't care, you know, where Iowa was, where Michigan State was at, where the tables were set before the game. When you have the football up by seven with three minutes to go, it is just inexcusable to not be able to close out that football game, especially with how your the other team, your opponent has been playing up to that point. Let alone losing in regulation. Right?
Speaker 7:So I I just think it's the point where not only like, it's not like this is the first time this has happened this season. And when it constantly happens and you try to change certain things, personnel wise, player wise, it really ultimately goes up to the coaching staff because right now, that's the only constant with losing.
Speaker 2:I think you put it perfectly. For Michigan State, if the games are forty five minutes instead of sixty minutes, the record would be much better is the problem. It's just that last quarter.
Speaker 6:Six and five if that was the case.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Genuinely. No. It feels that way. Is is Connor Gilly with you right now?
Speaker 6:Yes. Connor Gilly is here right now.
Speaker 2:I'd like to ask him in particular one question. I've got one more for you guys, so don't go anywhere. But, Connor, you've been at every press conference. You're the writer for the beat. I wanna ask you, the press conference after the game last night, what did you take away from it?
Speaker 5:So first things first, ever since the, I would say, the Michigan game, every press conference has kind of had the feeling of of, like, morning, like, is, like, passing or, like, that's the feeling in the air, first of all. And then he gets to the players. You know, Jacob and Kyle did say that, Moescio Milivojevic and Jordan Hall, they took the stand and, very yeah. Like, well spoken and, you know, like, trained to to say the right things and that kind of thing. And and that's all good and dandy.
Speaker 5:But, I mean, the like, you can see it. It is wearing on these on these players, I think. I mean and they can talk about, you know, better execution the next week or, like, trying to, know, finish games better. And at that point, what does that mean? You know, we're at this is game 11 of the season.
Speaker 5:We're gonna get to 12, and they want that. They want that fourth win, and they want to get the next one. But I I mean, it's it's wearing on the guys. And Jonathan Smith was, again, more of the same, but he did use a word I haven't heard from him before, and the word was painful. He said that in his opening statement.
Speaker 5:And I think and it's wearing on him too, but the face is kinda similar. But I think it's just it's a lot of the same, but you can kinda feel the underlying tension and the underlying sort of, like, momentous, like, building of where this could be headed.
Speaker 2:Yeah. That it's a good way to put it. Thank you, Connor. I appreciate that. You all three of you can answer this if you would like, but where do you think Michigan State goes from here?
Speaker 2:It's a really loaded question, obviously. There's a lot of different avenues they could go down, but what do you think in your mind?
Speaker 6:Well, I guess I can start with that. You know, to me, the program isn't as bad of a place as it's ever been in a time where college football is changing as much as it's ever changed. That's certainly terrifying. And the next hire that Jay Bat makes is a big one because to me, coach Smith is already a lame duck. You've lost eight straight games in the conference.
Speaker 6:Nothing you saw last year has given you any reason to convince you
Speaker 7:to keep him around for a
Speaker 6:year three. Quite frankly, I would be shocked if Michigan State didn't stick with him or does stick with him going into the 2026 season. So I would say that's the first thing is just kinda getting the donors together and, you bringing in a new head coach and making sure it's a hire that people can be excited about. I would also go with a low, if possible, instead of a high ceiling guy, go with a low floor guy. Make sure that you get this program up off the mat.
Speaker 6:This is four straight years of losing seasons, of not making it to a bowl game, losing to Michigan, losing almost every trophy game besides a game against Indiana in 2023 that now doesn't matter according to the NCAA and their vacated wins. So it's been a dumpster fire. It's been a complete disgrace to the brand that Michigan State football once was. And, you know, it's easy for me to sit here on Sunday morning after a straight Big Ten loss and say, hey. Let's tear it all down and start over.
Speaker 6:But that's essentially what they need to do because right now, you know, it just kinda feels like this program, this athletic department may be kinda just acting like the problem isn't as bad and as toxic as it really is because I do think it's deeper than Smith and deeper than the staff. But this program has a lot of stuff that they need to figure out. And they need to be ready right after Saturday because, you know, I think it's almost a breath of fresh air for everyone involved that this season's coming to an end, but that doesn't mean that the work for next season doesn't need to start now because it's just not gonna get any better if it doesn't it's gonna stay worse longer if it doesn't get any better soon.
Speaker 7:Yeah. I think the thing that I agree with Kyle saying, like, Michigan State is probably in the worst spot they've been. You know, whether it's the, recruitment watch over by the NCAA that will happen for the next three years and maybe the next Michigan State head coach, whether that's the just state of college football right now, other jobs and other candidates already getting filled and so many openings, and it's like how desirable now is Michigan State after this turnaround. Then you get to the I think the biggest thing this off season is just the questions of opportunity cost and what will set this program up for the best possible success in the future. And Jay Bette very early on in his, you know, athletic director days of at Michigan State as probably the hugest decision upcoming whether, you know, you gotta consider one, is Smith the guy?
Speaker 7:And I know they meet weekly, but does he see that potential? And, like, how much is enough to say, okay. What I've seen what I thought is no longer what I know. And then at that point, you know, how many season ticket people are going to cancel next year's plans? How much money will you lose by that?
Speaker 7:Where can you put NIL at that point when you're not getting the same revenue for tickets and donors if you were to stick with Smith versus going for another guy? And then the question is, what other guys are even out there for Michigan State to get? And I get Kyle saying like a low floor guy over a high ceiling guy, but it's really hard to decipher that at all because low floor guys are how you get Matt rule. High floor guys are how you get Matt rule down in Nebraska where you think, okay, this is a veteran guy, solid guy, and still Nebraska's in a place where they're lost. And I don't think Michigan State wants to repeat that.
Speaker 7:You wanna go for, you know, the shining glory. But it's so hard to decipher because even when you get a good head coach, how much success can they have at Michigan State with everything else going around? And it is just a deeper issue than Jonathan Smith be the head coach from Michigan State or not. There's a lot of questions that need answers. Some that we don't even know are questions right now because we're still outside of the internal discussions going on.
Speaker 7:But it's one thing we know for certain, it's a big off season and very important decisions upcoming for Michigan State AD and everyone else involved.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Well, the issue too is it's not like Michigan State's sitting on a pile of money like Scrooge McDuck here. They have issues that they have to pay off. When you're looking at getting out of the Smith contract, it's complicated. If he's back next year, I know that we'll all be riding for him, but still, it's not looking the best at the moment.
Speaker 2:We're going a little bit over the time for the segment, so I just want a quick answer on this one. What do you think about Brian Kelly? Would you take him in East Lansing?
Speaker 4:Oh, god. Oh, we'll let Connor
Speaker 6:answer this one.
Speaker 5:I'll put Brian Kelly. Wait. So so okay. So I didn't exactly hear, but from what I'm gathering, the question is kind of about what the positives are of maybe keeping Smith the next year and, like, where where
Speaker 3:Brian Kelly in green and white. What are the thoughts?
Speaker 5:Brian Kelly in the green and white. Yes. So from a pure coaching standpoint, it's kinda like, okay. You know what? He can get you, like, eight wins a year or whatever.
Speaker 5:But Brian Kelly as a human person in a in Michigan State Guard is something I find to be abhorrent.
Speaker 4:No. That is my correct answer.
Speaker 3:That was, yeah, that was a 100% accurate. I I can't I could not put it any better, Connor, honestly.
Speaker 2:We've been very doom and gloom about coach Smith, so I needed to provide a a little bit of an out for a moment just to see
Speaker 3:that Be all green and to get accurate. Like
Speaker 6:I said, Smith is not part of the solution, but he's not the entire problem either.
Speaker 4:Of course not.
Speaker 6:That's the that's where that's where I'll leave us here at three and eight.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Yes. Needed to give a reminder that it's not always greener on the other side. The grass is sometimes best where you water it instead of where you try finding it. So Kyle, Jacob, Connor, thank you so much for joining us on this first segment of this Sunday morning.
Speaker 6:Yeah. Thank you for having us. Appreciate it, guys. Thanks, Fausto. Yeah.
Speaker 2:Thank you, guys. There we go. Thanks.
Speaker 1:See
Speaker 2:you. That was our football beat. Thank you, Jack Dale. Appreciate your man on the phones. But yes, Kyle Keegan, Jacob Mauer, Connor Gilly, all helping us out.
Speaker 2:Very nice. We appreciate that. But, yes, had to remind some people that even even if coach Smith isn't doing what you want him to do with the football program He's
Speaker 5:a good
Speaker 2:yeah. He's a good person. That's what you gotta be happy about.
Speaker 3:Yeah. We could have Brian Kelly in the in on the university, which is just the last thing
Speaker 2:anybody wants have. Yeah. You'll sacrifice some wins for a couple years. No controversy. I think we are all happy about that at least.
Speaker 2:Yes.
Speaker 4:No no no scissor lift incidents.
Speaker 1:It was interesting there really quick. I know we gotta move off and get some basketball, but it was interesting to see between Jacob and Kyle the two different opinions when it comes to this next coach. Mhmm. Kyle wanted the floor. Jacob wanted the ceiling.
Speaker 1:Yeah. And that's two different ways that you can view it, and it'd be interesting to see which, you know, path Jay Bet wants to go down.
Speaker 2:Well, people forget too. Jonathan Smith was a high floor guy. He is a guy who came in who was just supposed to get the team back to bowl games.
Speaker 1:I was expecting like eight wins by this When we hired
Speaker 6:him Yeah.
Speaker 1:I was expecting eight wins by like this point and
Speaker 4:And any losses. I mean, looking at his time at Oregon State, the only time they've ever had two wins is twice. They've had two wins twice. It was his senior year when he was playing the when he was playing quarterback and then his last year as the coach.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 4:So, like, I you know, he's the only thing that is constant between those two ten win seasons at Oregon State. I just I I I don't think exactly the brand of football may be translated. I I don't wanna, you know
Speaker 1:Speculate.
Speaker 4:Yeah. I don't wanna perform an autopsy on a program that's still technically alive. Yep. But it it it just seems like it hasn't worked out schematically.
Speaker 2:I I will also say when when you're dealing with the transfer portal, dealing with people like Michigan recruiting from the same places that you're recruiting, Notre Dame's just around the corner. Indiana's great now. It's tough to get guys to come to Michigan State when it's been a struggling program. So there's still hope on the horizon. Can hope that everything turns around.
Speaker 2:I think so. Go to a team that's much more happy that we can actually celebrate. Michigan State football five and o. They should be a top 10 team in the country. Those polls came out.
Speaker 2:Football. You said football. Oh, Michigan State basketball.
Speaker 1:Do we actually think
Speaker 2:they will be? I think they'll be 11 or 12 Okay. To be quite honest.
Speaker 1:What I think as well. And then They should be
Speaker 3:higher than some teams who will probably
Speaker 2:be Wait.
Speaker 1:It's not it's not out
Speaker 3:It's not it's gonna be out on Monday.
Speaker 4:That's twenty four twenty five, not twenty five
Speaker 2:twenty six. That's my fault. No. No worries. Yes.
Speaker 2:Michigan State basketball. They obviously had that trip to Madison Square Garden to extreme success. Defeating a joke. Oh, yeah. Defeating Kentucky eighty three sixty six.
Speaker 3:Yes,
Speaker 2:sir. Yes. The Kurtang game, 15 points in perfect time.
Speaker 3:Oh my god. The Jackson Koleer game.
Speaker 1:Yes. The Jeremy Fierce game.
Speaker 2:Exactly. Everybody's working.
Speaker 3:That MSU basketball team game, matter
Speaker 4:of fact. This has been the Jackson Koleer season. Let's be honest. Yeah. For sure.
Speaker 2:Yeah. But you have to say for the two guard position where I had so many questions, especially coming into that matchup, who's going to step up? Seemingly everybody did at the right time. When you look at Fort, you look at Tang, they combined for 28 points on efficient shooting as well. Just so nice to see.
Speaker 2:Jesse McCullough, two, three pointers. Who knew he could do that? Even coach Izzo and the presser said, didn't know he could do that. So our stretch big is fine.
Speaker 4:He knew.
Speaker 5:We could
Speaker 3:we could realistically if he push came to shove, he could have an all shooting lineup out there.
Speaker 2:Genuinely.
Speaker 3:For the first time and it feels like a long time that Izzo has had a a two bigs who could really stretch the floor out.
Speaker 4:What what year could that have been?
Speaker 3:Oh, god. I couldn't even tell you,
Speaker 1:dude. Honestly.
Speaker 4:The the team that beat Duke?
Speaker 3:Yeah. Probably. Maybe a cat like, the year after with Cashes, I'd say, maybe. But it's been a while since he's had a five out.
Speaker 1:Shocker. Who would have thought if this team can shoot I I mean, they shot above average. They shoot average from beyond the arc. They're gonna do this to, you know, top They're
Speaker 3:gonna be a top
Speaker 1:borderline top 10 teams. Yes. Kentucky Kentucky came out and they played flat. I think everyone would agree with me. They didn't they did not look as good as I thought they were gonna look, but MSU was just dominant from bell to bell.
Speaker 1:It never was close. There was a few times where Kentucky got it down to maybe, like, 10, maybe in single figures, but, no, they just ran away with it. And everyone was amazing. There wasn't really like a, you know, like a bad spot here.
Speaker 3:I can't yeah.
Speaker 1:Like, I'm looking through the stats. I mean, maybe you could point to Jordan Scott, but, like, yeah.
Speaker 2:Scott was a plus. He was the leader in plus minus.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Exactly. Like, you look at the actual stat I'm just, you know, stat watching here. It doesn't look great, but then, you know, obviously, the effort is
Speaker 3:It's clearly there.
Speaker 1:That doesn't show up in the stat sheet, and it's amazing from Scott. What just an a, you know, top to bottom amazing performance from this team. Once again, Tom Izzo does it again.
Speaker 2:Yes. 11 of 22 from 50% from behind the arc. Nick Sanders got to play a mass and square guard. Walton twins got to play a mass and square guard. You know, Nick Sanders, man.
Speaker 3:Who I was gonna say, who's got who's got more auras, the coach's son? The Wojcik kid or Steven Izzo?
Speaker 2:It's Who
Speaker 3:are we talking?
Speaker 4:Definitely I think we know
Speaker 2:that. Yeah.
Speaker 1:I don't wanna answer that. I know.
Speaker 2:I know. There was a certain hype when he came on the floor every
Speaker 3:single day. It's different type of aura that came out there when Steven was
Speaker 5:Steven was on
Speaker 4:the court. The thing is, like, Wojciech actually, like, gets minutes. Like, he he's got
Speaker 1:He will.
Speaker 4:He's getting three minutes a game, but also he he hasn't played in one of the games. But I I don't know. When he gets in, he actually does play. He has one assist per game averaging a stat. Just even Izzo got what?
Speaker 4:He he played in probably 20 games?
Speaker 2:Yeah. You're going
Speaker 3:to decimal.
Speaker 4:Did twice 20.
Speaker 2:But for for Wojciech, you also gotta keep in mind, he's also a genius. The guy went to Harvard, the guy is Yeah. Extremely smart. He's a pretty smart kid. Yeah.
Speaker 2:Anytime he's out there on the court, he is the smartest guy playing. It's ridiculous to see. He actually can help out. Him and Ugo Chuku can really help out step in, give Fears minutes off. Mhmm.
Speaker 2:Even if he's only playing three minutes a game, that's three minutes. Fears doesn't have to play.
Speaker 1:That's a huge three minutes for someone that is leading the nation in assists right now.
Speaker 2:Yes. That's where we're about to get to it. Leading assists total, assists per game as well. He's averaging a double double at the moment. He has been excellent.
Speaker 2:We're gonna talk about Dog. His great game versus Detroit Mercy. The Titans, a career high 18 points, adding another 11 assists. Could have had 15 or more if the team was actually making shots.
Speaker 1:That's what Izzo said in the presser.
Speaker 2:Yes. That's exactly what he said. Two guards really struggled in that game. I have to say that that's gonna be a question seemingly all throughout the season is whether or not the two guards are gonna step up. They did it in Madison Square Garden.
Speaker 2:If they're gonna have an off game, you want to be against Detroit Mercy. They still won obviously. Looked ugly at points, but it was a very wide margin that they won by. For Michigan State, they have to be feeling good. They're going in the Fort Myers Classic very soon, playing Eastern Carolina for the first time in program history, then they face off against the Tarheels.
Speaker 2:Yes. And then they come back, start the in conference schedule versus Iowa, the hot guys. And then guess who it is? The big blue. And that.
Speaker 2:Duke. Yes. Yes, sir. Gonna be such a great another conference schedule.
Speaker 3:Was just saying, what a day that Duke game is going to be. Not only do we have that, which will hopefully
Speaker 1:A certain crawl on Grand River.
Speaker 3:Not only is there
Speaker 1:a crawl He did it again.
Speaker 3:There's a game, and then there's also a one two matchup that might potentially be happening in Ann Arbor that day as well.
Speaker 1:That is a packed day.
Speaker 5:Hold on.
Speaker 3:Could we
Speaker 4:ever get these things on separate days? That's what
Speaker 5:I'm saying.
Speaker 8:Like ever.
Speaker 2:Yeah. But Definitely three weeks, nothing going Yeah. Yeah. One day.
Speaker 1:Jack, back to this Detroit Mercy game here, more specifically Fierce. Izzo was just glowingly talking about Fears. Oh, yeah. Presser. It was and you have to get the sense the way he was talking about him.
Speaker 1:He thinks of Fears, like how he thinks of Some of these other The rest of his great
Speaker 3:point guards
Speaker 1:he's had. I believe he has himself compared him to Matine Cleaves.
Speaker 2:Every every single press conference.
Speaker 1:I'm not gonna I'm personally not gonna make that comparison because it's Matine Cleaves, but I completely understand where he's coming from. Obviously, Tom knows better than literally anyone. I expected him to break out not like this through the first five games.
Speaker 3:Mhmm.
Speaker 1:And I think what's really surprising me, obviously, the assists were gonna come. Did I think he was gonna be the national assist leader? No. But I knew he was gonna average around eight, nine. He's at he's at, like, 10 and a half right now.
Speaker 1:The points, the scoring is what's really surprised me. He had 12 shots against Detroit Mercy. Yeah. 12 confident shots. 12 good shots.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Two from four from three. It's just and so impressive what he's been able to do. And if he could continue that into conference play against Duke and then all the way into the tournament, I don't
Speaker 3:wanna
Speaker 1:I make don't I wanna make assumptions here, but This yeah. We're gonna be competing for banners, I'll
Speaker 4:say that.
Speaker 3:I agree. This team, like you said, if they play the way they did against Kentucky, if they shoot half as well as they did against Kentucky, this is going to be a top five team. And like you said, they will probably really, I think, coast their way again to another regular season big ten championship. Looking at how some of the other teams are shaking up right now in the big ten, it looks more wide open honestly than it did last year. And so I think they could really, you know, make some noise in conference play.
Speaker 3:And like you said, man, Fierce the type of love that Izzo has for this guy is just one of one, it feels like. He really has bought into he really has bought into this kid, and he has just become such a great leader for this team, both on and off the court. Izzo clearly sees it, and Fierce has really stepped into that, you know, dog role of playing that point guard under Tom Izzo and really being the leader and the alpha of the team. I think he has fully embraced that role this season, and he has just he he there there could be no other compliment bigger than what Izzo has said about him week in and week out so far.
Speaker 2:I I think what's the best part for Izzo for me is his press conference is he knows how the media twist words because he's in his thirty first season. He call he said that I know that Jeremy can be a dog on defense, and then he had to emphasize, I mean, dog in a good way. Yeah.
Speaker 4:And it should bad.
Speaker 2:Yeah. It should be an obvious thing to say, but then you obviously read national headlines and seemingly everything has turned into an insult. So you have to respect Izzo for that. I gotta go back to that Kentucky game for a second. Go ahead.
Speaker 2:I Mark Pope, I have not felt worse for a coach after a matchup to be He looked like he was mentally destroyed.
Speaker 5:It was
Speaker 3:Oh my god.
Speaker 2:Real sad.
Speaker 3:The panic around Lexington that I have seen after this game is something that I have not seen in a long time.
Speaker 1:Well, because they
Speaker 3:Kentucky basketball.
Speaker 1:They've played six games so far. The two actual viable teams. They lost. They they have wins against Nichols State Mhmm. Valpo, EIU, and
Speaker 3:To be fair
Speaker 1:What even is this?
Speaker 3:The Louisville game, it was LoyaltyMD. Yeah. That was a that was a tough place to play. KFC Yum was rocking for that Kentucky Louisville game. That is a really good Louisville team this year.
Speaker 1:Brown is
Speaker 3:Brown went ballistic in that game. He is an absolute phenom, freshman this year. Like, he it was a close game too, so I thought they played really well in that Louisville game. But, yeah, obviously, this Michigan State game was just completely different. They looked so out of it.
Speaker 3:I mean, the backcourt that we were really worried about with Aberdeen and OA just were completely shut down.
Speaker 1:By the chance
Speaker 3:they're defense. Yeah. Chandler could not hit a shot. I know they were missing their best player and acquaintance, but it really felt like even if he was out there, it would not have
Speaker 1:been much of a difference, honestly. Here are their total points besides our game. 77, a 107, 88, 99, and 88. We held them to 66. They held them to 66.
Speaker 1:My apologies. That, like, obviously, I know, like, they shot, I think, three from 30 from beyond the arc. Mhmm. But they just muffled any type of offense, name being MSU.
Speaker 2:Oh, you also got like
Speaker 1:So impressive.
Speaker 2:The fact that Michigan State won that with only 10 free throws. Yeah. That's probably the most impressive part. Yeah. They didn't get the line at
Speaker 9:all.
Speaker 1:And I think that is gonna change for the team going forward. I think especially Fears is going to once we get to conference play, because that's that's just kind of the way you have to win at the guard spot now, especially in the NBA is you just gotta get you just gotta get to the free throw line. You gotta draw those fouls. And I think that will be huge in the and we don't even and they don't even need to really do it, at least early on the season to have success. Oh, and you were gonna say something, and I cut you off.
Speaker 4:I I don't know if you guys saw, but Otega OAI took a indefinite leave of absence in the team. Yeah. You know, whatever he's got going on, hope that that gets cleared out, you know, or, you know, cleared up soon. But I don't know. I think, like, the way that they really shut down that that backcourt was really, like, cool.
Speaker 4:You know? It feels like MSU has kinda struggled around the perimeter in the last few years, both offensively and defensively, and they really, really, like, had a breakout game as far as their perimeter entire their entire perimeter game goes. I mean, were seven for 13 from three in the fur on the first half, and they went, like, what, four or five straight? Like, they made four or five straight.
Speaker 3:To begin the game, I feel like, yeah, they made like
Speaker 4:Well, they missed they missed the first, and I think it it it went
Speaker 3:After that.
Speaker 4:Out of, like, five make streak. And I don't know. I think that this game was, like, very, very close to a a ceiling that we can expect from this team. I think that there's room to grow. Obviously, there's room to grow for every team.
Speaker 4:But I think if we can if we could see this from this MSU team a lot more or more often and against tougher opponents, think we're we're gonna see it against Duke. We're gonna see it against UNC. You know? Or they're gonna have a chance to show it. If if that's the kinda on court product that we can expect from this team, they're gonna go so far.
Speaker 4:It's gonna be amazing to watch. And time is oh, finally coached a team to make three pointers again, which has been, what, the last four years?
Speaker 3:Yeah. It's been a while. I I mean, this year, they don't even have to worry about running against a team that is full of grown men either, basically. So I think that's a plus as well. Yes.
Speaker 3:You know, don't have to run against what is considered an NBA squad by most people can due to their age. So
Speaker 2:For Michigan State, everything's going right. You talked about them shutting down the guards. We're gonna end this segment in just one second. But have to mention, Jordan Scott, he didn't have any real offensive production, but there's a reason he was a plus minus, a plus 19. Tied for the team lead with Jeremy Fierce, of course, because they both played excellent defense, shut down the guards.
Speaker 2:What a great win in the garden. Everyone was hoping for it. It's been a little bit of time for the champions classic since we've seen Michigan State win like that. So pretty nice to see. Michigan State basketball, five and o on the season.
Speaker 2:They're traveling down to Fort Myers. I should be there. We're gonna figure out exactly, but we'll yeah. We'll send out some tweets. We'll make sure everyone knows.
Speaker 2:But, yes, facing off against the East Carolina pirates for the first time ever on Tuesday. The Tar Heels of North Carolina. That's where Drake May went for those who forgot. They're playing
Speaker 1:about them on the green and white report.
Speaker 4:Hey. Who's Drake Mac? Oh,
Speaker 2:let me tell you during the break. I've got a page you've gotta see. But, yes, we'll see you very shortly after this three minute break. Come back at 12:45 on the dot. We're gonna talk some MSU basketball with Liam Chudler and then some MSU hockey.
Speaker 2:Gonna go a little bit sad during that segment, but it's okay. This is the gray and white report. We'll see you very shortly. Stay safe in your car. If you're at home, have some food.
Speaker 2:We'll see you soon. Welcome back in the gray and white report. A little little amazing grace for you because there's one player on the women's basketball team who has been amazing this year, Grace Van Sleutin. Quite good. Oh, yeah.
Speaker 3:Our lord and savior.
Speaker 2:Well, we're in the place. Yes. Yes. For those who didn't understand that, home grace man, sleuthing averaging 17 points per game over five rebounds, adding 3.4 steals as well. Liam Chudler, welcome to the Green and White Report.
Speaker 8:Thank you. Thank you for having me.
Speaker 2:Yes. We're happy you're here. It's of course, just for those who forgot, I am Joe Dez joined by Liam Chudler on the mic. Oscar Henderson, Owen McCarthy, Jack Dale. We got a loaded crew here.
Speaker 1:Liam, is this your Green and White debut?
Speaker 8:It is my Green and White debut, Jack. Yeah. I'm very excited for it. Gotta start somewhere. Why not start today?
Speaker 1:I'm so pumped when, like, Impact people finally come on the green and white.
Speaker 2:Oh, it is nice. That one made his debut a couple weeks ago. Now he's
Speaker 1:now he's kind of a mainstay.
Speaker 2:Yeah. My this
Speaker 4:is this is my third time.
Speaker 5:Do I
Speaker 4:get a t shirt now?
Speaker 2:Yeah. Yeah. Yes. But, Liam, would you like to explain why we have you here at the moment? Obviously, you're a beat reporter.
Speaker 8:Yes. I'm a beat reporter for the Michigan State women's basketball team. Today, they're taking on Oakland, a little nice in state matchup there. So should be a good one. Oakland is a decent team, but Michigan State, I have no doubt should be able to handle them with no worries.
Speaker 2:So I wanna ask you for events, Lewin. Is she playing tonight? Because I heard some rumblings that she might be injured a little bit.
Speaker 8:She did get injured in the last game. It's unclear if she's gonna be able to play today. But she did in late in the game in the last game against Eastern Illinois. She did take a pretty tough tumble right on the floor and was able to get up after a few minutes. But she did need to be helped off, put a little bit of pressure on the leg, but was in a clear limp.
Speaker 2:Yeah. It's tough to see obviously for the best player on the squad. She is just a stalwart. She's a captain this year. Right?
Speaker 8:I believe so. Yes.
Speaker 2:Okay. I believe it's her and Kimball as the captains this year. That sounds right.
Speaker 1:Yes. That sounds right.
Speaker 2:But three games over a 100 points. Every single game so far, they've scored over 90. Yeah. Just ridiculous to see. And they have Jaylen Brown on their team.
Speaker 2:It's a different Jaylen Brown, but still, how's she been looking?
Speaker 8:She's been amazing. I interviewed her in the last game after Eastern Illinois, and she just had an amazing game. She put up 14 points, hit a couple of threes. She's been a really nice player off the bench and MSU's depth in general. Like, everyone who comes off the bench has been able to be productive, put up a solid amount of points so far this season.
Speaker 1:And, Liam, about you talk about that depth. Can you talk about some of the players that came off the bench that second half against Eastern Illinois and just, you know, showed out?
Speaker 8:Yeah. I mean, Kenneth or not Kennedy Blair. She's a starter now. But for who is it? Julian Woodard.
Speaker 8:She's coming off injury. She had a ACL tear last season and has been able to play the last couple of games. She started the season still a little bit injured, but has been able to come back. She really produced a lot in the Eastern Illinois game. She put up 17 points, only starting the game in the third quarter.
Speaker 8:So she put up 17 points in
Speaker 2:the season.
Speaker 1:Only played fourteen minutes. I believe she was four from five from three.
Speaker 8:Yeah. Sucks.
Speaker 1:Woodard could not miss in that second
Speaker 3:That's crazy.
Speaker 1:Same thing with Kimball. Same thing with the Tyrionan twins.
Speaker 2:Yep. You wanna hear something? Yeah. Seven players on this team shooting over 40% from behind the arc so far. 11 players averaging at least five points per game, and then 12 if you include Abby Kimmel because of the 4.8 points per game.
Speaker 4:Mhmm.
Speaker 2:How about four players averaging over two steals per game as well? It's ridiculous.
Speaker 8:The the defense has been amazing so far. Frelick really likes to run the full court press, and it's been working like a charm just causing Teams
Speaker 1:don't know what to do with it.
Speaker 8:Teams have no clue how to break it. It's crazy. The amount of ten second violations I've seen, unbelievable. Like, I've never seen this many in my life.
Speaker 2:It's every season with her at the helm for some reason. Teams just can't handle the full court press. It's funny.
Speaker 8:Yeah. She runs it to perfection. It's very impressive.
Speaker 3:Yes. She's been impressive so far these first couple of seasons she had. Obviously, you know, last year coming in, they were almost, I believe, a tournament team. Right?
Speaker 2:I think they they did make it. Yes.
Speaker 1:Make it.
Speaker 3:Yeah. For the first time in a long time, Sam too. You know, obviously, didn't have a lot of success in the postseason, but it was a really great first season for Frelick. And as you said, man, they are scoring in buckets. They have they have just five or six walking buckets on this team.
Speaker 3:It feels like, as you mentioned, a bunch of them shooting 40% from three and also the steals too. They really bought in on the defensive end. Yeah. My my question is, how do you think they're gonna do, like, when they go into big ten play? I know we're gonna talk about this a little bit, but obviously, they haven't really faced a lot of quality competition Yeah.
Speaker 3:And so they're scoring a lot of points on, you know, not very quality opponents. Do you think that's gonna be able to keep up once they get into Big Ten play and play more better opponents?
Speaker 8:Yeah. I think a Big Ten play, it's definitely gonna be a little it's gonna take an adjustment because of the schedule so far hasn't really been anything too special. They're about to go, I believe, into a tournament where there's Clemson, there's Ole Miss. So they're about to play some pretty big non con opponents. But, yeah, so far, it's kinda hard to tell how they'll be in big 10 play until they play those Clemsons, the Ole Misses, just some powerful opponents for them.
Speaker 8:So but I think they will be atop the big 10. I think they've got a lot of good depth. Like I said earlier, the defense has been impressive, but also rebounding. Frelick has harped on how important rebounding is. She's continuously said in each press conference, rebounding, the most important thing in basketball.
Speaker 8:And if they can rebound the ball, then they'll be able to win a lot of games this season.
Speaker 2:Frelick's definitely one of my favorite coaches in just sports as an entire. He's one of the nicest people you'll ever meet, and then she knows how to lead her team. What I like is that she emphasized the fact that end of the day, this is a game. Realistically, no one lives or dies by what happens on the court. So for her, time has flown.
Speaker 2:She's already on her third season out nowhere.
Speaker 1:Which is just insane.
Speaker 2:Ridiculous. Yeah. It's crazy. Last year, got to the second round of the NCAA tournament, lost to NC State the year before that. It's just Carolina teams, man.
Speaker 2:Lost in UNC in the first round, but now they're top 25 team in the nation. They are. They're doing great in the out of conference schedule. I wanna ask you who has impressed you the most on this team?
Speaker 8:Oh, that's a really tough question.
Speaker 2:There's a lot of options.
Speaker 9:There's a
Speaker 8:lot of options. I'd say Kennedy Blair has been a really impressive player.
Speaker 1:You talked about that rebounding.
Speaker 8:Yeah. The rebounding she put up, what was it? Yeah. 15 against Eastern Illinois.
Speaker 1:If you guys haven't watched women's basketball and specifically MSU, Kandi Blair's a guard. She's about
Speaker 3:Five nine. Five nine. Five nine.
Speaker 8:Yep. Yep.
Speaker 1:She had 15 rebounds against Eastern Illinois. I know it's Eastern Illinois, but
Speaker 3:She's averaging seven right now.
Speaker 1:It's insane. Insane. Bounce of season. Is that good? I think that's pretty pretty good.
Speaker 5:Landon, give
Speaker 8:your thought. Yeah. I mean and in the previous game before Eastern Illinois taking on Western, she was just two rebounds and two assists away from a triple double. So Kennedy Blair has just been a really impressive player. She came off the bench, I believe, last year, and this year, she's really blossomed in her starting role.
Speaker 8:It's just been a really impressive start. I'd also say Emma Shumate has been really impressive. Her shooting, it's just automatic. She's hit so many threes each game. And also another player who's coming off the bench.
Speaker 8:So Zedgegain, just another player who highlights the depth that this Michigan State team has.
Speaker 2:When I first covered a game that Shumay played in, I was really hoping that her name was pronounced Shumaytie because I had like 10 pirate references to make during it. But then Shumayt, yes, she's a great player as well. Jaylen Brown, she's been doing great so
Speaker 7:far. She's
Speaker 8:been amazing.
Speaker 1:Jones has been doing well.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Rashunda Jones. Yes. She has over three steals per game. When you I mentioned the four players having more than over or more than two steals per game.
Speaker 2:Three of them have more than three steals per game. That is ridiculous. 3.6 for Jones, 3.4 for Ben Slooten, and 3.2 for Theron Halleck.
Speaker 8:Yeah. Yeah. The I mean, like, the defense just that's what Frelick preaches, defense, rebound, and that's led to a lot of second chance and fast break points all season long. So that's been what Fralick has been preaching all season, and it's worked for him so far.
Speaker 2:Alright. We gotta keep on schedule. Liam, anything else you'd like to say before we let you go?
Speaker 8:Not really. I'm just excited to continue being on this beat this season. The women's team is really fun to watch, and it's gonna be a fun season for sure.
Speaker 2:Did you have a preview for today? Is that is that you or is it Josh today?
Speaker 8:It is Josh today. So I did not have a preview for the Oakland game, but he should have it up by now. No worries.
Speaker 2:Yep. Make sure that you check out all the work that Liam Chudler has done for the Impact eighty eight point nine FM. Seems there's some issues with the website right now. We've all gotten blocked out, Jack. It's not just you anymore.
Speaker 1:Yeah. I was talking to this before the show, but I our I think our IPs got blocked.
Speaker 2:I don't know. Something like that.
Speaker 1:I got
Speaker 2:out of my computer. Those web and look at those websites on the company computer anymore, Jack. I thought we talked about it. But now, Liam, thank you so much for coming on. We had a good one having me.
Speaker 2:Yes. We're gonna sub you out with another man that we love, Gabe Souza.
Speaker 8:The goat.
Speaker 2:Yes. He's on his way over. But Leo, have a great time covering the game today.
Speaker 8:Thank you. Appreciate you.
Speaker 2:Yes. Appreciate you coming on. It's great having the beat reporters come on.
Speaker 3:Yes, sir.
Speaker 1:A little tag team wrestling right here. You can see on the Twitch. Liam is now out of camera. And in comes sliding in his There
Speaker 2:he is.
Speaker 1:Now we have a trio right here. Owen McCarthy, obviously, and then Oscar and Gabe, both of them being on the beat. And Owen, you've played hockey your entire life.
Speaker 6:What? Alright.
Speaker 3:Let's get to
Speaker 1:some hockey.
Speaker 2:Let's let's not go that far.
Speaker 6:You're a
Speaker 4:big yes.
Speaker 6:You're a big hockey
Speaker 1:guy.
Speaker 2:We were talking about during the break, but if you are a fan of MSU athletics, you've probably seen Owen McCarthy on every video board that could possibly Probably. He's everywhere. Especially have a
Speaker 1:sombrero on on Friday night.
Speaker 4:No. It's not a sombrero. It's a it's a straw sun hat.
Speaker 2:Oh, thank you.
Speaker 4:There you Yes. Yeah. I was right back. My apologies. Yeah.
Speaker 4:If you watched the, the the MSU basketball game on, on Friday or maybe even what else? Last Thursday. Yeah. The San Diego game. That was actually my birthday.
Speaker 4:But I My birthday. Yeah. I I find myself on camera quite a bit. Yeah. I I I I I've gotten to know a couple of the the in house camera guys.
Speaker 4:So they they always like to catch me off guard too.
Speaker 2:It's great to see that. A lot of the times you'll be staring into the camera as it kills me. Yeah. Very good. But yes, it's time for the next segment.
Speaker 2:We're flying through these so far today. Gabe, you ready to talk some hockey?
Speaker 9:Of course, man. Obviously, this one's gonna be a little bit more disappointing than the ones of the past. But, yeah, it's always good to talk about our Spartans. Yeah.
Speaker 2:We've gotten some great weeks the last couple of weeks to talk MSU hockey. They have mostly been the savior of this show.
Speaker 3:We've been a little too spoiled with this team as of late.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Nine straight wins. Right?
Speaker 3:Nine straight? Yeah. Nine straight.
Speaker 2:Nine straight wins. It's time to rip away the band aid. They got swept this weekend by the seventh ranked with Scotts and Badgers, and the biggest winner of it all, unfortunately, for everyone is the team down the road, the rival Michigan, most likely the number one ranked team in the country after this weekend. But we're gonna start off with a little bit of a recap. For Wisconsin, they won five to four.
Speaker 2:It was offensive shootout in the first game on Friday. Mhmm. And then a defensive slugfest the day after that. Two one victory. Puerto Martin.
Speaker 2:What a way to end that third period. And then the man himself falling down mid air shot, Ben Dexheimer.
Speaker 3:I can't believe he got that pass, Augustine. That was insane. In an absolutely absurd goal to end it by Dexheimer. He's been one of the best defensemen in all of college hockey so far this season. And, man, he showed it right there.
Speaker 3:I mean, just an unbelievable goal, like you said, in the air, got it right past his glove side. It was the the fact that it was on glove side too, he got it past was just phenomenal. I mean So Chris. Just an insane goal. And, yeah, it was it was a deserved one with just how much effort he had to put into it.
Speaker 7:Well, it
Speaker 9:was a little bold as well because if you think about it, you're gonna have two badgers deep in the zone. One of them on their stomach. Right? So you figure if they miss that, the Spartans can go the other way and potentially win the game. So was kind of a do or die situation in an for the Spartans, capitalized.
Speaker 2:I I will say for Dexheimer, he was smart in the fact that there was a Spartan who got I don't know exactly who it was when they're falling down. It's tough to read the numbers, but they both got caught up, got stuck behind the goal after that shot was made. So it would have been, I believe, a two on two in the end, maybe a two on one Yeah. In MSU's favor, but still, what a play. Oh, and I believe you're about to say something.
Speaker 2:I apologize.
Speaker 4:Yeah. Well, I don't know. I think they had a lot of trust in Pulver. Yeah. You know, his first few starts as, you know, as a collegiate athlete, and he was real like, he stood on
Speaker 1:his head. Phromenal.
Speaker 4:You know, he he had four goals against, the first game, but, you know, with with such an, such an impressive offensive attack that MSU has, you kinda you kinda expect something like that for your first start, you know, in college. But the second game, he was unbelievable. You know, the only time that he was, you know, beaten was on a late chance where who would who would have thought Porter Martone of all people, he had four points in this series. You know, he he was able to beat him on a rebound early or sorry. I passed back in front where, you know, he's he's gonna get that rebound even if Pulver saves it and he has another chance.
Speaker 4:But, you know, it was it was an all around great, you know, two starts for him. And going into that series, people were kinda scratching their heads. You know, why why do you leave Paulson on the bench? But I think that Mike Hastings probably knows something that we don't.
Speaker 3:Yeah. He has to because, I mean, like you said, Hauser has been playing really well so far for this, Wisconsin team. He's had some up and down games, but I mean, he's been really solid for them. I believe he's allowing around what 2.2 goals against the game. Yeah.
Speaker 3:Was. So the fact that he put in Pulver and probably again, one of their biggest games they've had all season was a, you know, very bold move. I wanna say, I don't know if Hauser was injured or not was the reason why he was not playing.
Speaker 2:I haven't
Speaker 3:seen you. I don't think so. I haven't, yeah, I haven't seen anything about that. So, I mean, the fact that it was, you know, Hastings' decision to put in Pulver over Hauser with Hauser even being healthy was, you know, such a a bold move. And I think his team responded really well after that first period to it, and they really played I think they played well in front of their new guy and really did a good job of defending him and making sure he had the easiest job that he could have.
Speaker 3:And they they delivered and end up getting the sweep in the two games.
Speaker 2:And, well, when the only time you let up a goal in the second game is a six on four or the goal is pulling the other end, it's very impressive to put it lightly. I do wanna ask all of you. What does we have a couple questions here, so we're gonna roll through them. But what does Michigan State need to fix going in the next few weeks?
Speaker 3:It's just beating themselves. I mean, look, the second periods for this team have been really brutal throughout the throughout the season. I mean, I believe it's their lowest scoring total, in any period they have. They're really great first and third period team, but the second the middle 20 is really where they've struggled a lot this year. It hasn't mattered a lot, obviously, because they're just winning games and, you know, dominating teams, but it really has been that middle 20 where they have really seemed to struggle and really have lost their offense, I felt like.
Speaker 3:And, you know, as we saw it, especially on that first game, they just had a terrible second period, gave up four unanswered goals to Wisconsin, had that power play goal three seconds into when they got the power play, and then it was all over from there. So it's just really, you know, just really them beating themselves and really beating themselves in that second period, not really playing a consistent full sixty minutes of hockey, it feels like. And and and two, I just think, you know, Augustine just didn't really have that great of a game in that first one. Obviously, he played a lot better in the second game, but, you know, 29 saves on, you know, 34 attempts. It's it's not very good.
Speaker 3:And, you know, a lot of those shots were, I think, really easy for him to block too. And, you know, when Scottson just got the better of him, I felt like this weekend.
Speaker 9:Yeah. I think that's a great point, Oscar. I was gonna say that this second night from Augustine was like a scuba bump night. It felt like, you know, he pitched or saved a really good game, but then the offense couldn't get going. I think the biggest takeaway for me, especially from the second night, is that Michigan State did not capitalize on any opportunities.
Speaker 9:Mhmm. I believe Moniz still had two breakaway opportunities, one in the middle of the game, one in overtime, of course, and he was visibly frustrated and said a word I probably can't say on air after he missed that opportunity. But then also late in that overtime or about halfway through, Riker Lee, one on zero opportunity, and you figure this freshman who is like the Kyrie Irving of hockey. Right? He's dribbling the puck against Notre Dame.
Speaker 9:You think he's gonna finish it. But, he's not able to capitalize, and I thought that we've mentioned Oscar with Jack multiple times that, every single time a team comes in and plays Michigan State, it's their Super Bowl.
Speaker 1:Right?
Speaker 9:It's they're taking on the number one team in the nation, and Wisconsin played, like they had nothing to lose, and they didn't, and they didn't lose. So
Speaker 3:Yeah. This is a this is a phenomenal Wisconsin team. I mean, they've had two I think they've had three really great starts, three really great weeks to start big ten series. They've played, obviously, two of the toughest opponents in the big ten in Michigan and Michigan State, and they won three out of those four games. Obviously, they split the series against Ohio State last weekend, but this is a really good Wisconsin team.
Speaker 3:They had a down season last year, but, I mean, you look at the scoring they have right now with Christian Fitzgerald, Gavin Mornsey, and Ben Dexheimer. It's one of the best scoring lines in the country right now. Obviously, one of the best power plays in the country right now. And so this is a really, really good Wisconsin team that I think was very underrated coming into this season. Right now, they have the goaltending that they that Mike Hastings likes, and now they have the scoring, and they've always had that defense.
Speaker 3:That's something that Hastings really caters into his team. And so this is a really good Wisconsin team, and now I think they've put themselves right in the thick of possibly winning the Big Ten regular season championship.
Speaker 4:Yeah. And I think for MSU, you know, like you said, beating themselves is always gonna be an issue. You know, we can think of the two, you know, probably most high profile losses in recent memory for MSU. It's UNH and it's Cornell. Both of those times Mhmm.
Speaker 4:It it followed the exact same script where you're taking dumb penalties that keep a team in the game, then you take a major late in the game to really, really keep them in a in a in a spot where you should be closing that game out, and then you take another dumb penalty late in the game to give them the the chance to score a winner. And, obviously, Augustine was very he was very good last night.
Speaker 9:Yeah.
Speaker 4:He he should have probably pitched a shout out. I mean, he had one, you know, mark against him that came, take a guess, on the power play.
Speaker 3:Yeah.
Speaker 4:Wisconsin's power play is the best in the nation. I mean, they scored in what? They scored in five seconds, their first their first opportunity on Friday, and then they scored in, was it eighteen seconds last night? Yep. So giving this team multiple, multiple opportunities like they did last night.
Speaker 4:I mean, how many power plays did Wisconsin have? Five, six?
Speaker 3:They had they had six last night.
Speaker 4:Yeah. Okay.
Speaker 3:I believe it was, like, two or three in the second night or the first night, I wanna say.
Speaker 4:To kill five penalties against that Wisconsin, you know, power play is it's it's great, but still to give them that many opportunities, especially when you're fighting when you're fighting a deficit is it's it's poison to wins. I still do think this MSU team is the best in the country, but if they want to prove that to everyone else, they really, really have to stop taking penalties and stop playing emotionally, play with emotion instead.
Speaker 3:Yeah. I I I think, you know, what perfectly encapsulated all that is that third period last night that they had. I mean, just, you know, in a game, one nothing. They're really sticking into it, and they're making themselves close. But then Daniel Russell gets that cross checking, then a misconduct, and then Mackie gets another penalty.
Speaker 3:They were honestly lucky that they were able to get that six feet four because, honestly, it should have been six feet five had Jack Horbach not gotten that lucky delay of game, in a panic trying to get trying to clear the puck. So, really, it just felt like this third period, they were letting it slip out of their hands on their own just by these dumb penalties. And, again, it it when it comes from Daniel Russell too, one of the guys who you look at to be your leaders, he's been here for a long time, and he's the one taking the game misconduct. It's just absolutely unacceptable, honestly. And that was obviously was not the reason why they lost the game.
Speaker 3:They were able to come back and force that one into overtime, but I think it was a great example of a game that they probably should have lost in regulation because of how much they really did beat themselves in that last period, especially with those penalties.
Speaker 2:We'll see how they respond versus Colgate on Wednesday and Friday. Weird to have it before This Thanksgiving to
Speaker 3:is such an interesting series.
Speaker 5:Like, I
Speaker 3:have I have never seen a series like this with a, like you said, a Wednesday and a Friday on Thanksgiving.
Speaker 2:Could've just done Friday, Saturday.
Speaker 3:Really should've. Really could've, honestly. Like, just skip the skip the Thanksgiving in between or just have Thanksgiving in
Speaker 4:any go. When does any Big Ten scheduling ever makes sense?
Speaker 3:I was gonna say, yeah, Penn State has a whole month off right now after their series against Minnesota. Like, they are not playing this entire month of December.
Speaker 2:So Is that serious?
Speaker 3:Yes. If you want yeah. You wanna talk about crazy scheduling, at least we don't have that issue going on, and we actually play.
Speaker 2:Oh, that is pretty close. So they played December versus Michigan. Got it. Great Lakes Invitational twenty two days later. So three weeks off for Michigan State.
Speaker 2:Owen, do you have something to say before
Speaker 9:we go? I did
Speaker 4:just wanna give Wisconsin some extra flowers. I mean, they they they really came in and proved, you know, that they they deserve to be at the top of the big 10. You know, they do have a 10 game winning streak against number one overall teams. That's impressive. I mean, that's that's the Mike Hastings effect.
Speaker 4:There's a reason he won coach of the year. It it was a few years ago, but, like, he's still there. You know? That's still the same guy. And I think, you know, looking at their at their lineup sheet, they have how many senators on that lineup?
Speaker 4:Is it They got
Speaker 2:a Four or five?
Speaker 3:I was gonna say they got a decent amount of
Speaker 4:The Wisconsin's. Yeah.
Speaker 3:Got a decent amount
Speaker 2:of I saw
Speaker 4:that all over Twitter
Speaker 2:last It
Speaker 4:was it was it was a funny funny thing to see. But Excuse me. I think I think that this this big ten's gonna be a four team race to me. It's gonna be between MSU, Michigan, Wisconsin, and if Penn State decides they wanna strap it on.
Speaker 3:We'll see.
Speaker 2:Alright. Well, last thing I'm gonna ask you because we gotta go break. Keep this quick as short as you can. Where do you think Michigan State ends up in the newest poll as it comes out? And then second question, is Michigan number one?
Speaker 3:I I think Michigan will end up getting one. They did split the series against Ohio State, I believe, so they did end up winning second game. They lost on Friday.
Speaker 2:Oh, yeah. I thought they won on Friday. Okay.
Speaker 3:So I think they'll end up getting number one just because of that, but, yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if it's just a split vote. I'd say 26, 24, honestly, in terms of first place votes between the two.
Speaker 9:Yeah. I mean, I would agree with that. I think that, honestly, it doesn't really matter because in two weeks, these teams are gonna play each other, and that's gonna be for the number one rank anyway. So I think that even if Michigan State's number two following this week, which they most likely will be, it'll be for a short period of time until they had to play the Wolverines.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Just to clarify also, they did sweep Ohio State. It was five two Friday and then eight one the on Saturday yesterday.
Speaker 3:Oh, I thought I heard they won.
Speaker 9:I thought they lost. Yeah.
Speaker 3:I I we were we were fed false information.
Speaker 2:You guys are thinking the Penn State game. They lost to Penn State in the second game. That's what it was. Yeah.
Speaker 1:There
Speaker 4:No worries. Owen? Yeah. I I I don't know. I think MSU's definitely not number one.
Speaker 4:They were unanimous number one this week, which was, how many weeks ago?
Speaker 3:Three, I believe. Yeah. Two weeks in
Speaker 7:a row.
Speaker 4:Okay. But, anyway, I don't see them dropping below Denver, even though, you know, Denver hasn't gone on a two game losing streak or they're not on a two game losing streak currently, but I think it's still gonna be Michigan and MSU one and two. Denver is gonna be close, but I don't think I don't see them above MSU yet.
Speaker 2:Alright. Well, that's all we got for this segment. We're gonna head to our final break of the afternoon. Technically afternoon now. Yep.
Speaker 2:12:10PM. Come back in two minutes. We'll keep it short. See you very soon on the green and white report WDBM East Lansing. Hello, and welcome back into the Green and White Report.
Speaker 2:The Pistons have been making some night moves. I guess that fits somehow. Apparently, that song's about Detroit somehow. Didn't know that apparently, but that's
Speaker 3:It sound very
Speaker 2:Detroit. Internet, so it don't make much sense, but it's okay. Welcome back to the Green White report. Joe Dez here as the host, Gabe Souza. Joining me, Oscar Anderson, Liam Chudler.
Speaker 2:Owen, what were you gonna say? That's a Bob Seger song. It is a Bob Seger. Yes. He's from Detroit.
Speaker 2:Okay. That makes sense. Yes. Yes. Yes.
Speaker 2:A great song as well. Night moves. Everyone loves it. Of course. Yes.
Speaker 2:Liam Chudler has rejoined the mic. Jack David as well. We have more people than we have mics here at the front.
Speaker 1:Oh boy. We currently have six people sitting at the desk. This might be a Garina White record.
Speaker 5:Could be.
Speaker 2:It's a year of any first. First time ever having an athlete on Garina White report. First time ever having the president of Michigan State on, and now we got six guys on five mics. What a crazy year. Very good.
Speaker 2:Crazy year. We're gonna hop we're gonna hop in to the Detroit Piston segment. Yeah. Yes. The Pistons have looked awesome.
Speaker 2:Fourteen and two at the moment. Jayden Ivy has returned. He got in double figures his first time back. 10 points for him. They're at the top of the east.
Speaker 2:Oh, Jalen Durin. What a man. A man in a boy's body, I guess you could say. He's younger than most of us. I I gotta get off this mic.
Speaker 2:Don't know if this moment is turning up.
Speaker 3:But yeah. I'll say I'll save you here, Joe. You know, I was I was I'm kind of upset that we did not sign this man last year because the amount of money that we are going to have to pay him now
Speaker 1:No. No.
Speaker 3:Is going to be absolutely ridiculous. I mean, he's playing like a top 10 center right now in the NBA, arguably top five maybe. You can make a real argument for him to be in there right now. I mean, the guy just he makes everything. His postgame is so efficient.
Speaker 3:Him and Cade's pick and roll is one of the most unstoppable plays in all of the NBA right now. The those two have so much chemistry together. You can really tell they've worked a lot with each other and just know each other on a on a on a level that is, you know, just beautiful to watch when these two run the pick and roll. They finally got that backup point guard back, and Jaden Ivy, like you said, he came back, had that 10 had 10 points on his way back. He's gonna be really important, I think, for this team and especially giving Cade a little bit more rest in terms of that offensive, responsibility that he has.
Speaker 3:So, yeah, man, they're looking real good. They have currently tied their longest win streak in franchise history. So they will have a chance tomorrow at Indiana to break that record.
Speaker 9:And they'll be a win.
Speaker 3:Most likely, yeah, be a win. Indiana is tanking to all extremes right now. Probably the best tank situation I have probably ever seen for a team because they're gonna get a superstar right back and possibly a top five-
Speaker 1:They're gonna get boozer, DeBanza or Peterson.
Speaker 3:With Tyrese Halliburton? Crazy. I mean, come on dude. Like that is scary team for next year. But yeah, man, let's take our situation while we can now.
Speaker 3:And while the East is wide open, why not take it for ourselves this year?
Speaker 1:And that's the big thing is you look around the East and you mentioned Indiana, they're down. They just made the finals. They're down. Celtics, no Tatum. You know very well.
Speaker 1:They're down.
Speaker 3:Toronto is currently second seed in the East right now.
Speaker 1:It's crazy. Like, the Cavs have some injury stuff as well. Yeah. So do the Sixers. I don't really believe in the Raptors, the Heat.
Speaker 1:The only team that I'm looking at the East right now that would, I think, would give the Pistons fits if the playoffs started would probably be the Knicks.
Speaker 2:Right? Probably. Yeah. That's about it.
Speaker 1:So it it's gonna be between those two, but, like, the Pistons have a amazing opportunity to make the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in I don't even know how long.
Speaker 3:It'd be teen some since 2008, I wanna say.
Speaker 6:Yeah.
Speaker 1:And then a chance to make the finals for the first time in I would imagine That around
Speaker 3:would be
Speaker 4:twenty years.
Speaker 1:That would be two decades. Yeah. Have that
Speaker 2:chance. Yes.
Speaker 1:Yes. Then, yeah, obviously, if if you wanna win the title, look across the aisle to the West and you have a monster in OKC.
Speaker 3:Good luck. I forgot I said this. We need to send a prayer to the NBA's Lord and savior right now, James Harden. Is currently stopping us and saving the NBA from Armageddon basically. If you guys don't know, a couple years ago, Clippers decided to trade away SGA to the Thunder for Paul George.
Speaker 3:The trade is still going on as a matter of fact, as the Thunder still have the Clippers first round pick for this year. Clippers are currently four and eleven as we sit.
Speaker 2:They could just trade SGA and they would have won the trade, but then they got like 10 for a draft picks back too.
Speaker 9:Well, Oscar, don't disrespect him like that. They're five and eleven now.
Speaker 1:Oh my god.
Speaker 3:I forgot. Yeah. James Harden had a masterclass last night and they beat the Hornets barely.
Speaker 2:55 points for Harden. Yeah.
Speaker 3:He's averaging almost 30 a game right I mean, he is again, if if the Thunder get a number one overall pick in this year's draft,
Speaker 1:which Speaking of a team that Very well happening. Very well connected. Three one of the three headed monsters of this draft class, they could possibly get him.
Speaker 3:They could get him. And I can't think of a more scary situation than that team adding a top three pick.
Speaker 1:Can you imagine a backcourt of Darien Peterson and Shay Gilgos Alex?
Speaker 4:Can you
Speaker 3:imagine AJ DeBansaw on that defense too?
Speaker 1:Throwing in throwing in possible Nate Naismith player, Cameron Boozer on that team.
Speaker 2:I know. They might end up with more.
Speaker 3:We're so screwed. Like, the NBA is so screwed.
Speaker 1:And the even have to play all their pay all their young play I mean, they they have already. But, like, a lot of the players, they don't even have to pay.
Speaker 3:And this season, SGA has sat out 50% of fourth quarter games.
Speaker 1:And he's
Speaker 3:not sat out 50%.
Speaker 1:So yes. If the Pistons wanna win a final, you're gonna have to slay the beast, which
Speaker 3:is He's the only probably the greatest team in NBA history. Yeah. It's so good. One off. One off.
Speaker 3:They're getting there, dude. They're getting there.
Speaker 1:We'll see.
Speaker 2:There's a few I'd
Speaker 1:It's so good.
Speaker 5:They're getting
Speaker 3:they're getting there, man.
Speaker 1:Back in, you know, playing really competitive basketball again. I know they were competitive last year, but they play the they play basketball in such a different brand than a lot of different NBA teams want to. Mhmm. A lot of NBA teams wanna just, you know, chuck up threes. Missoula ball is the phrase most used, bro.
Speaker 3:But You ruined our game, Joe. I ruined my beautiful game.
Speaker 2:Thanks, Steph Curry.
Speaker 1:I think I think Joe would would, you know, ruin the game ruin the game for the title that he literally just got two years ago.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Watched I watched the man I I go to sleep with a poster on my wall of at 21 years old. I watched him tear his Achilles, and I I cried in my girlfriend's arms there.
Speaker 3:I don't blame
Speaker 1:the fuck. I don't blame the fuck. I
Speaker 7:don't have a poster.
Speaker 4:Wouldn't go
Speaker 2:around telling people that. Yeah. I don't have a poster. I have a body pillow. It's it's much better.
Speaker 1:But the they play with defense
Speaker 3:Yes.
Speaker 1:With Kade, Kade in them, but it's it's it's not even really Kade in them because Dern's been awesome and a lot of the nude additions they've Dunkered around this
Speaker 3:often. Shooting 40%
Speaker 1:from three. So I'm excited to talk to Pistons. Actually, be able to talk to Pistons
Speaker 8:Yes.
Speaker 1:On Green and White, like
Speaker 2:And be happy.
Speaker 1:Be happy.
Speaker 5:Yeah. I know.
Speaker 3:It be good talks.
Speaker 2:You know who saved the franchise? Tobias Harris. That man
Speaker 3:What gave me that? You know? Changed it around.
Speaker 2:Was true setter.
Speaker 3:Was such a Tobias Harris hater when he when we said he was coming back here. I was like, he's washed. I washed him in Philly. He ain't got it anymore. Turns out he
Speaker 5:was just He playing too
Speaker 3:was playing too much with Joel Embiid. Okay? I think that's all it was. Just a wash.
Speaker 2:It might be too little with Joel.
Speaker 6:The washed,
Speaker 3:You know, disease was like traveling to him, but now he's with Kade, and he looks like a completely different player
Speaker 2:right now. Alright. We gotta get back on schedule. So that's gonna be the end of our Pistons segment. I do want everyone at home to know, at least you're not a Charlotte Hornets fan.
Speaker 2:No matter how bad your fortune is going. Not only have they traded away Jalen Duran on draft night. Some people we were talking about, we got confused for him. But they traded the Knicks, and then the Knicks traded him to the Pistons. So both those teams, Knicks could never afford him was the thing.
Speaker 2:Probably not. Yeah. For the Hornets, they got rid of Durin. That would have been nice for them. They don't even have Mark Williams, the guy they traded him for anymore on their team.
Speaker 2:They traded away last year's MVP, the reigning MVP, SGA, Shay Gilgess Alexander. And who can forget the Black Mamba, Kobe Bryant was also traded on draft night. Things can always get worse. You could live in Charlotte.
Speaker 3:So to the five Charlotte Hornet fans out there, I'm sorry for you, man. Sorry for your loss.
Speaker 2:They at least got a nice nice area around them, guess. I get good one. They're
Speaker 8:cool colors.
Speaker 4:You know?
Speaker 2:Yeah. It's true. It's true. Got a fun announcement.
Speaker 4:Very good color.
Speaker 2:So now we're gonna move in to the next segment. Our last segment before Descent Confused. We're a little bit behind schedule. We'll keep it fast. But for NFL buy or sell and then all of our three game pick thems, Jack David, we haven't heard from you in a little bit.
Speaker 2:Like, we'd like you to lead this segment.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Of course. So we got about eighteen minutes to go through. We got five buy or sells, and then we have a three game pick them for everyone. So if you wanna just while we're going through this, try to stew a, you know, parlay in your brain that will not be placed, but we'll just be, you know, talked about and discussed just for fun.
Speaker 1:But we'll start with a buyer sell. Starting the NFC North here. The bears will hold on to this NFC North lead that they now have. Hello.
Speaker 3:I, like, I low key I low key might I'm gonna sell right now, but I am I am reluctantly selling, I will say. This team is playing really good football. My problem is it's too many one score games that they find themselves in against not quality opponents. And this back half of schedule, all they play really is quality opponents. You have the packers twice still, have the eagles have to go to Philly to play that game, have to go to the forty niners, and also have to play Detroit on the last game of the season.
Speaker 3:That one could be for the division possibly. We'll see. But I I think they're playing just not good enough to possibly win out and win out all of these games, especially with how close a lot of these games have been. I just don't think they're gonna be able to keep up in these one score games. And at some point, it's gonna come back to bite So I think I'm gonna take them to I'm gonna take them to lose the division right now.
Speaker 2:Yeah. There's a lot of teams that obviously could compete, and it's not like they have some insane type of lead in the division. I get that they are seven and three, but still a lot of teams in the division haven't played that tenth game at the moment. Mainly man on the pack or nope. Packers have that tie.
Speaker 2:Excuse me.
Speaker 4:I I
Speaker 3:I gonna say they're about a half game ahead.
Speaker 2:Yes. They're half of that tie. Exactly. But I still think Packers have a chance. Lions obviously always have a chance.
Speaker 2:The only one who's out there is the team that's led by nine, the Vikings. They were I don't I don't think anybody trusts them anymore.
Speaker 3:The worst Why thing would he say that?
Speaker 2:The thing is because
Speaker 3:he doesn't understand how horny he is. Say that. He doesn't get it.
Speaker 2:You know, the thing is if I didn't have Twitter or Instagram, I probably would be a better person. So maybe he's he's living life. Right?
Speaker 5:He's at least not cranking them.
Speaker 2:So yeah. So anybody else have any thoughts on that one before we move on? I'll I'll I'll sell it.
Speaker 4:I think that I I just yeah. I'm selling on this too. I I just don't I don't see them them I don't see them holding on. It it seems like that, you know, they're they're kinda swimming out ahead of, Michael Phelps right now. Michael Phelps being the rest of the NFC North or well, rather just, you know, Detroit and Okay.
Speaker 4:Green Bay.
Speaker 1:Okay. Don't don't compare yourself to Michael Phelps.
Speaker 4:No. No. No. No. No.
Speaker 4:No. We're not this is more of a this
Speaker 2:is more of
Speaker 4:a division as a whole.
Speaker 1:No. I understand what you're talking about. No. I think I'm gonna sell this as well, but the bears have to be taken seriously. They are very good.
Speaker 1:I just first year, Ben Johnson, Caleb Williams. Don't one zero one score games. They got a big matchup today against Mason Rudolph with the Pittsburgh Steelers. No Aaron Rodgers. So I'm sure that will probably end up well for them, but I'm gonna sell.
Speaker 1:I'm gonna go with the lions any less
Speaker 4:Yeah.
Speaker 2:I will say the bears are feasting on terrible teams. I get that you can say that about the patriots. I understand. Yes. Will say that about the patriots.
Speaker 3:I understand. Yes.
Speaker 2:It's okay. Very much. But still bears well, they don't have a win as good as the Buccaneers or the Bills on their schedule. Hey, Drew.
Speaker 3:Sir, convincingly too.
Speaker 2:Yes. But for the Bears, they beat the Vikings by two. They beat the Giants by four. They beat the Bengals by five. This team is not good.
Speaker 2:They beat the Saints, I guess, by 12, but then a one point victory over the Commanders. Believe that was a Mariota game too. Yeah. It was Jayden Daniels. Excuse me.
Speaker 2:I'll give them that at least. But still, they're not winning against good teams. It's not tough competition. Next one, please.
Speaker 1:Next question. And we'll let's start with let's start with Owen on this one. The Texans will make the playoffs. Oh, boy. And then I put in parentheses, and I'm you could take this however you want to.
Speaker 1:Three teams currently outside of the AFC playoff picture will make it. And those three teams that I'm referring to are the Texans, the Chiefs, the Ravens.
Speaker 4:What was the take I had on on the pylon?
Speaker 1:Oh, I gotcha.
Speaker 4:Oh, boy. On who? On the Texans. I don't think they've got it. Alright.
Speaker 4:Now now that I have the playoff picture up here.
Speaker 1:That front four though for the for Houston. Oh, good.
Speaker 4:Yes. But is it enough I mean, obviously, if that was what let them manhandle the Bills. But I I think that looking at the playoff picture right now, it's the Broncos, Patriots, Colts, Steelers, Chargers, Bills, Jags. I think there's one team that drops out, and it's not the Bills, the Chargers, the Steelers, the Colts, the Broncos, the Patriots. I think that the Jaguars are probably be the one to come out, and I think it's gonna be either the Chiefs or Ravens that slide in.
Speaker 4:So I don't know. I I just don't think that the Texans have had enough juice for the entire season to be in position to make a playoff push.
Speaker 3:I'm gonna I'm gonna buy on Houston, man. That game last night, I think, really convinced me that this team could really make a run. I don't think anyone in the AFC honestly would wanna see this team in the playoff either.
Speaker 1:No.
Speaker 3:That front four, as you mentioned, is so dangerous. De'Hunter and Will Anderson as two edge players are just it is a ridiculous combination to have. And I think this is a year, especially, where you can really go far with a very great defense. I mean, we've seen it with Denver. They don't have a great offense at all.
Speaker 3:And yet, look, they're nine and two right now. So this is a year where I think defense can really carry a team. And with the way that Houston Texans defense is playing right now, I think if they get Stroud back, if they get some of these other players back healthy, I think they could make a run. And then I just I don't know if any team's gonna wanna see them in the playoffs if they do. And especially if they're coming in really hot too, which they're gonna probably have to if they wanna make it.
Speaker 2:Yeah. I'm I'm gonna have to sell. I think I trust the Jaguars more than the Texans right now just because looking at the schedule, I know it's not not something I say confidently, to be quite honest, because the Jaguars seemingly come oh, it's terrible.
Speaker 4:I don't think that's
Speaker 3:on the week.
Speaker 2:I don't think that
Speaker 4:sentence has ever been said before.
Speaker 5:I know. Right?
Speaker 2:Yeah. Exactly. But still, I think for the Texans, they play the Chiefs coming up. They play the Colts twice. They play the Chargers.
Speaker 2:That's a chance for four, like, realistic losses unless they outperform expectations. Yes. They have the Cardinals and the Raiders on their schedule. That's too should be sure wins, but still, I don't see it happening. They've just struggled too much.
Speaker 2:They haven't inspired any confidence in them, feel like, throughout the season. Besides, I will say Josh Allen getting, like, 40 yard sacks at a time. Oh my god. Crazy.
Speaker 3:Eight sacks on Josh Allen is unheard of.
Speaker 1:Which is why I even put this question down to begin with. Being able to do that to Josh Allen Insane. Six five around two forty, that has to make you it has to make other teams really focus about you.
Speaker 3:Yeah. I have not seen him that rattled in a
Speaker 1:long time. But we can end it off here unless unless anyone else has thoughts. I'm probably gonna sell. I agree with Owen's take, and then you look at those other two teams that are also on the outside being the Ravens and the Chiefs. Yeah.
Speaker 1:There's not a lot of room because there's still a lot of good teams in that AFC playoff picture, and I'm gonna bet I'm gonna bet, you know, against the Texans when when you compare them to the Chiefs, at least for the playoffs, and then the Ravens will probably win the North. So, yeah, I'm probably gonna sell that. Any last thoughts before we move, Arm? Nope. Okay.
Speaker 1:Next one here. Let's start with Oscar. The rams are the current favorites in the NFC.
Speaker 3:I like it, dude. I love it. I think this team has everything. They got the defense. They have the offense.
Speaker 3:Obviously, Matthew Stafford is playing at an MVP level. Pukhniku was right there with him. They just made mince meat, it felt like, of Sam Darnold and the Seahawks. I came on here last week and said that that team, that Seattle team, I thought could have a real chance to be a competitor in the NFC, and they just proved me wrong. I mean, Sam Darnold just for Sean McVeigh owns Sam Darnold.
Speaker 3:I mean, every time this guy plays the Rams, he just gets cooked. And it is it it would it happened twice last year, and now this year, you see it again. Four interceptions, just crazy. And this t like I said, they have it all, man. I don't really see a weak spot for them outside of maybe the offensive line, but they clearly showed that this offense can produce even with that being some sort of a weak spot.
Speaker 3:And yeah, man, I just I love everything that they do. I think they are the best all around team right now, and I don't think they have as many question marks as a lot of the other teams in the NFC do right now.
Speaker 2:Owen, do you want
Speaker 3:to go?
Speaker 4:Is this one about the Rams? Sorry. I I checked out for a second.
Speaker 2:I believe Are the
Speaker 1:Rams the favor in
Speaker 4:the action? I I think so. I I I'm gonna have to buy on this one. I I was very in and out on the Rams all year. I didn't think that Stafford had it.
Speaker 4:Obviously, he still does. Sean McVeigh is still Sean McVeigh. Puu Puuka Nakua is still Puuka You know, I I feel like this defense had a lot of questions surrounding it going into the year. At least they had no real, no no real, I guess, cohesive unit like they have had in the
Speaker 3:previous year. Secondary, I'd say. Yeah. I mean, I mean, that front seven is just phenomenal. Braden Fisson, Jared Verse, and Byron Young are they it's an it's an incredible front four.
Speaker 4:But they've they've really put it together this year, and I don't know. I I've really been out on on the eagles as well. And I think that with the Eagles kinda taking a step back this year, this is really the time for the Rams to to make a push.
Speaker 9:I think the better question honestly is, are they the favorites to win the Super Bowl right now? Because I think they're well, they well, first of all, they are the favorite according to DraftKings right now.
Speaker 1:I would pick them up
Speaker 3:right now.
Speaker 9:Yeah. And I, mean, you look at this NFC, I think, like, the last game we saw out of the Eagles, the last two games really haven't been although, you know, they've been winning these games and winning in the National Football League is a win, they haven't been very pretty. Right? Their win against the Lions obviously did not impress anyone. So I think that the rams are the clear cut favorite for sure in the NFC, but I think for the Super Bowl right now as well.
Speaker 9:Okay.
Speaker 3:It's fair.
Speaker 1:Yes. Let's keep it in the NFC here. The lions miss the playoffs. Anyone can take this. Come on.
Speaker 1:Because I know
Speaker 3:well Alright. Listen. Start this one.
Speaker 1:I put it on here because Lions are not currently in the playoffs. If the playoffs started today
Speaker 3:It's so fair.
Speaker 1:They would not be in there.
Speaker 4:They like to play games with me. I I
Speaker 3:don't know what's going I know what's going on with this team. They are too inconsistent right now. More specifically, the o line is too inconsistent right now for this team. One week, they look like they are still one of the best units in the NFL, and then the next week, they look like they're one of the worst. I mean, this eagles this game against the eagles, I mean, deflection after deflection, Goff was under pressure all day.
Speaker 3:It it it is an amazing eagles front seven, but this was supposed to be an o line that is looked at as one of the top in the NFL. They are not playing like that right now at all. Dan Campbell had just a horrible game plan calling, I thought. Just really questionable decisions all throughout. I mean, there was a there was a series in which he ran Jamere Gibbs up the middle four times in a row against Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter.
Speaker 3:I don't care how good Jamere Gibbs is. I don't care how good your offensive line is. You are not running four times up the middle in a row against Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis. This just does not happen in the NFL. So I you just need to find more consistency from this team.
Speaker 3:And I I get it. Dan Campbell has not lost back to back games since 2021. I still think that's gonna be the case. I like them to win this week, but I I'm not gonna go as far as to say they're gonna miss the playoffs. I just don't think they are the Super Bowl contender that we thought them to possibly be this year.
Speaker 3:So I'm gonna sell, but I I think they'll make the playoffs. I don't think they're gonna miss it at all as a whole. That that's that's kinda crazy.
Speaker 2:Yeah. I'll I'll hop in real quick. I I I do agree. I don't think that they'll miss it in the end. It's more just for the sake of Detroit.
Speaker 2:I've seen some, like, 60, 70 year old man's finally smiling with their Detroit Lions hats on. So just for the hope of this world here. I I hope
Speaker 3:they make it. It's just yeah. I I don't know what it is, man. It's it's just too inconsistent. Yeah.
Speaker 3:Too too up and down. And now now now I don't even know if our head coach is the right play caller, and he can't just go back and give John Morton play calling duties because how does that look on him to say, hey. I thought this was the plan. This is clearly not the plan. I'm gonna go back to my offensive coordinator after saying, I'm gonna do this.
Speaker 3:Like, it's just not a good look. So
Speaker 2:Alright. Does anyone have any other thoughts just because we had that through one and then our three game pick thems?
Speaker 1:I I think the lions are still gonna make it. They are way too good to not. I know the eagles game was really ugly, but that's just kinda how the eagles like to play that game play the game. And that game was in Philly. Correct?
Speaker 3:Yes. They were still in position to win.
Speaker 1:Were still in that game as well. Yeah. And I know we're not, you know, very high on the eagles, but the eagles are still a good team. So I I I think you guys are still fine.
Speaker 4:I I do just wanna say, according to nfl.com, the lions still do have a better chance to make the playoffs than the bears. Bears.
Speaker 2:Yeah. That makes sense.
Speaker 9:That makes sense.
Speaker 5:I agree
Speaker 3:with that.
Speaker 2:When you look at their schedule, it makes sense. The Lions have a pretty weak schedule comp. But, Jack, keep us on rolling.
Speaker 1:Last one here before we get into the three game parlay. We are going to get a throw off a a throwback. Sorry. AFC championship game, that being the broncos and the patriots.
Speaker 3:2015 all over again.
Speaker 1:Yes. Oh, yeah. Between Peyton and Tom, but this time it would be be between Bo Nix and Drake May. I think naturally, Joe, I'll start with you on this one.
Speaker 2:Yeah. I I gotta say yes just because if you're a Patriots fan, you don't agree with this. It's something that you gotta kinda give up your leadership for. But I will say there's plenty of options for throwbacks. Know how good the Patriots used to be, of course.
Speaker 2:If it's
Speaker 5:the How case
Speaker 4:long they were Colts.
Speaker 2:I know Colts, Broncos, Chiefs, Ravens, any of those, you got a throwback playoff game. And I think at least one of those will happen. I trust in Drake May. I know it's almost every season it feels like where a QB has a breakout year, makes it to the playoffs. Almost every QB in their first playoff game kinda puts up a sneaker.
Speaker 2:I think that Drake May will be able to handle if you get the one or two scene. Their first matchup should be a pretty weak team, but also, you never know. Could be Ravens. Could be Chiefs. So it all depends on how things roll out, but I I trust in the Patriots.
Speaker 2:We're gonna say yes. We'll buy.
Speaker 4:I don't know. Just just for the purpose of laughing at you, I kinda hope that they lose just so I can say that Connor Cook has more playoff wins than Drake May.
Speaker 2:Yeah. You know what's crazy is, last year, the Lions and the patriots had the same exact amount of playoff wins even though you guys were top of the NFC.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Yeah. It's crazy how much the lions fans love to make jokes now.
Speaker 2:Oh, I know.
Speaker 1:It's crazy.
Speaker 3:What would you do if you spent your life in the basement and finally made it up?
Speaker 1:I guess I guess What would you do? I guess me and Joe don't know.
Speaker 3:Oh, shut up. Slow your roll.
Speaker 1:Shut up, mister
Speaker 2:nine and
Speaker 4:eight. I'm not gonna
Speaker 2:hear this
Speaker 3:from you. Enjoy another 500. Enjoy another 500.
Speaker 4:Hey, how many of those happened before color television was invented?
Speaker 3:I think
Speaker 4:Actually, whatever that number is, it's more
Speaker 1:than Lions.
Speaker 4:That's that's that's
Speaker 1:just that's not the
Speaker 4:original question. The color TV came out before Yeah. The first Super Bowl. Sorry. I
Speaker 3:like it, man. Again, I think this is a year where you could really see a defensive minded team make it very far into the playoffs, something that we really haven't seen a lot in the last couple of years. So I I looking at how both of these teams are playing defense and more specifically, I think how the patriots are also looking on offense right now. I mean, you probably have the MVP candidate right or the leading MVP candidate right now on that on that team for New England, and Trayvon Henderson has just been playing absolutely phenomenal now that he's finally getting the ball too for this team. I like them in the playoffs.
Speaker 3:I'm just a little concerned if they'll be ready to meet with the playoff challenge just because, again, of how weak their schedule is. I mean, they're gonna play Buffalo closer to the postseason as well. So that'll be nice for them to get at least some, I guess, experience against the playoff team later in the season. But I like them, man. I like them going far.
Speaker 3:Vrabel, he's been there before. He's gonna know how to get these guys ready. I I I don't hate this idea that we could get a throwback AOC championship game. I think I'm gonna buy.
Speaker 1:I like Joe's idea. I I'm gonna sell the actual game itself because I don't think the Broncos have it. I agree. But you look at any of these teams in the AFC, all of them will be considered throwbacks because, you know, the Patriots were good for twenty years. Mhmm.
Speaker 1:So I think I think if I had to throw one out, I think you're gonna get a throwback to twenty eighteen Patriots Chiefs. I think something like that.
Speaker 3:Of
Speaker 1:course. I got the years right on that one. Right?
Speaker 5:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Yeah. So 2018. Honestly, all those years were Patriots Chiefs. But, yeah, I think it's gonna be the Patriots. They're just really good.
Speaker 1:I really believe in Drake May and then whoever else wants to go and, you know, beat them and take them on an AFC championship game. Really quick. We'll move on, Jack, three game parlay.
Speaker 2:Jack, let me say something real quick. You you've gotten a bat for me quite a few times in the Green Wright report, so it's time I step up on your bat. Oh, boy. Yes. Everyone loves to talk about the Steelers being bad because of the last couple of years.
Speaker 2:But I'm giving the Lions some grace here. I'm going back to the nineteen thirties pre Super Bowl era. The Lions have nine playoff wins ever, including the nineteen thirties. The Steelers since 2008 have 11. Sounds like one franchise doing quite better than the other to be quite honest here.
Speaker 9:What are we doing here? What's I don't think what even the point of that?
Speaker 3:Who's better? Talking we're talking about the
Speaker 9:the Broncos Patriots right now. Mean, we just caught a
Speaker 1:straight up.
Speaker 3:Oh, yes.
Speaker 1:No. We were, and then somehow the Lions were brought
Speaker 5:up into the conversation.
Speaker 3:You went to a conference championship game?
Speaker 2:When was the
Speaker 1:last time you guys went to a conference championship game?
Speaker 3:Earlier than you guys did.
Speaker 1:2017.
Speaker 3:2020, I wanna say.
Speaker 1:Oh, yeah. Oh, I forgot what you guys lost in the Bay Area.
Speaker 5:Oh, yeah. Hey. We don't talk about it.
Speaker 3:Kendallville Dora is
Speaker 2:not a We'll get back on track. Three game. Yes. Yes. We'll get back on Three
Speaker 4:game parlays real quick. So
Speaker 1:we can get into some awards.
Speaker 3:Go right ahead.
Speaker 2:Oh, yeah. I'll go through quick. So I'm taking Jaguars minus 2.5, Eagles minus three, and then or Patriots, excuse me, minus seven and a half.
Speaker 9:Alright. So yeah. Took a Saint Brown touchdown, of course. I'm one of the biggest Saint Brown fans out there, so I had to throw my boy in. I am also the biggest Jameis Winston fan on this planet, but I do have him to throw one interception.
Speaker 9:He might throw for 500 yards today, but I
Speaker 3:think one of three.
Speaker 9:Yeah. At least three picks. He's gonna have at least one interception, I would assume. And then I have Gibbs, a 100 rushing plus receiving yards, all purpose. I think he should get that done.
Speaker 2:I agree. Oscar.
Speaker 3:Alright. I'm going with Chicago minus two and a half against the Pittsburgh Steelers. No Aaron Rodgers today means no ownership over Chicago. I would've liked Pittsburgh honestly had they had Aaron Rodgers, but no Aaron Rodgers means no victory over Chicago, unfortunately for them. Give me the bears by two and a half.
Speaker 3:I'm gonna go Philly plus three against the cowboys. Cowboys defense is not very good. Philly's defense, phenomenal. Probably one of the best in the NFL right now. I expect them to shut down Dak Prescott in that offense, and the cowboys defense is not gonna do much, I think, against Saquon in that offense.
Speaker 3:Give me the Jaguars minus two and a half against the Cardinals. Cardinal season is over. I mean, that game last weekend, I believe they had, what, 15 penalties in the game or something. Something like both. I think Jonathan Gannon might be a dead man walking right now.
Speaker 3:I think after especially after that game, 15 penalties is just absolutely unacceptable. So give me, the Jaguars minus two and a half because they're still playing for something at least.
Speaker 1:Right. K.
Speaker 4:Owen? Well, I'm a start. I got the Lions plus 14. Hugh Herns, if you're watching or if you're listening sorry. Minus 14.
Speaker 4:Mhmm. I I just don't I don't see these, this Giants team being able to keep up. Even even if they have had a, you know, a better couple of weeks just with no dart, you know, James is gonna he's gonna come out and sling the ball, but he's just not gonna be able to, I guess, put together a competent offense. And I just I just think the Lions are gonna be able to shut them down and really, really do a a number on this, this Giants team. And then I got the Colts plus three.
Speaker 4:Going into Arrowhead, I I just think they have the better team. I think they'll be able to stick with them. Even if they do lose, I don't think I don't think that they've I don't I don't think it's gonna be by more than three. And then, Panthers plus seven and a half against the sorry. The 49ers on Monday night.
Speaker 4:I like the Panthers. I don't know. There's something there's something there's something about Bryce Young and his offense that I just I just like. Wanna root
Speaker 2:for him is a big thing. For him. This seems like such a nice guy.
Speaker 3:Yeah. You just wanna
Speaker 9:do You wanna root for the average. That's what you wanna root for. They're just like a whole bunch of mid right now.
Speaker 2:Yeah. That's
Speaker 3:fair. Actually,
Speaker 9:you what? I root for short guys. He's like, what? Five nine.
Speaker 2:I was gonna say, what what about a five foot eight NFL quarterback screams average? Oh, yeah. We gotta end this segment, Jack David Singer's. Let's go.
Speaker 1:Last one here. I'll take Chiefs minus three and a half. They are hosting the Colts. I I think they're just gonna have a bounce back game. Patriots minus six and a half.
Speaker 1:They're going to Cincinnati. I think they'll easily win by touchdown. And then give me Lions over four over 34 and a half team total. Wow. I think they're gonna light it up against the Giants.
Speaker 1:Wow. The Giants team are they they are struggling to score, and they're struggling to, you know stop.
Speaker 2:Teams
Speaker 1:now. It's I think after, you know, putting up nine points, they're gonna go for the moon here. Alright. Let's move on.
Speaker 2:Yes. I will say for Lions as well, seemingly every time I trash in your franchise, they do quite well. That's why I said go pack,
Speaker 1:go a Hence few weeks why was trashing them. So I could then put them in my
Speaker 2:I know. Yeah. We are Yes. We are secret savers saviors
Speaker 1:for the franchise. It's all us.
Speaker 2:All me and Jack can take Yes. No. No. No. But, no, it's fair.
Speaker 2:I hope that they do good. I like seeing people be happy around here at least. Well, we're gonna go into our final segment, the Destin Confused game. Will just a clear confusion three minutes before I brought that up. Owen was trashing on the Steelers.
Speaker 2:We don't have fly wings or We
Speaker 1:don't let that
Speaker 2:stuff fly. We don't have the memory span of goldfish in here. We like to take it back couple minutes just to clarify. But, yes, now we're on Dust and Confused. It's the final segment of the show.
Speaker 2:Time to have some fun here, guys. For everyone who does not remember, last year, the segment before Thanksgiving came in second place at the MAB Awards. It's a segment where we draft our Thanksgiving football teams using superheroes, cartoon characters, and former athletes. But now, we're gonna try something else. We're gonna see how this goes.
Speaker 2:I I don't know. I'm gonna be honest. I'm not not too sure how this segment will go. I see. I've got high hopes in it.
Speaker 1:We'll see.
Speaker 2:So what's gonna be today, we are drafting our Thanksgiving dinner conversation lineup. Some would call it a rotation of some sorts, but still, we're gonna keep with former and recent athletes. So the four categories we got, you gotta just stay in the general parameters. If it leaks out a little bit, it's okay. But we got the eccentric aunt slash uncle.
Speaker 2:That's someone who comes in big loud personality. Got the guy sleeping on the couch with his mouth open. Everybody's got one of those. Usually, it's an uncle, maybe a grandpa. Next up, a cons conspiracy theorist cousin.
Speaker 2:That is me most of the No. No. No. But that that will be a good one. And then the relative with the terrible sports takes, the one who's saying that the Bucks, like the Milwaukee Bucks are gonna win the championship this year out of every year.
Speaker 2:So on Dame Lillard's gonna win MVP even though he's out.
Speaker 1:You know?
Speaker 2:Yes. Whole season.
Speaker 1:So is this gonna be like a snake draft?
Speaker 2:Gotta be a snake draft. I'll start off first, then Gabe, and then we'll go all around Oscar, Owen, Jack, and then we'll go back the other way.
Speaker 1:One more question before we get started. Are we going In order? In order or can we just kind of jump around?
Speaker 2:You know, I was gonna go in order at first, but I'm good with jumping around.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Because there's some of these where I I have an answer a better answer than others and I wanna
Speaker 2:Yeah. Ones that you wanna keep, Oscar. Appreciate you. Gotcha. Cleaning up a little bit here.
Speaker 2:But, yes. For all of you at home, hope that you enjoy this segment. Should be a lot of fun. We'll see how the answers go. Just so everyone knows, try keeping criminals out of the answers.
Speaker 2:That is the thing to say. I had to fight around that myself. Behavior. Yes. We'll try not condoning terrible people out here.
Speaker 2:So there might be some bad people, but we won't go into the terrible extreme. So for the first category, I'm going to draft the conspiracy theorist cousin here.
Speaker 3:And I'm going
Speaker 1:think was gonna go to the conspiracy I
Speaker 2:think so as well. Give me Michael Porter junior.
Speaker 9:Oh, wow.
Speaker 2:Yes. I would like to hear about certain professions and why they make so much money and why they don't.
Speaker 9:I love that.
Speaker 2:Yes. I think that Michael Porter would keep the conversation pretty interesting. I think that he would be writing in himself for the presidential vote or something and arguing why it's a good decision. So I like that one. I would like to hear why the moon landing never actually happened and they actually just went underwater for some reason or something like that.
Speaker 2:Now Gabe, let's hear you.
Speaker 9:Oh, man. I'm gonna go with the eccentric aunt or uncle here. I'm between two names right now. I think both of them would work, but I'm gonna take Gronk. Think that he would carry a conversation well during Thanksgiving.
Speaker 9:He's if you just think about Gronk, he's like a high energy uncle, so that's gonna be my first overall pick.
Speaker 2:It's actually a great answer. If you anybody saw Tom Brady roast him, Gronk spiking the shot glasses, is always a great one too. I would love to see him at Thanksgiving dinner.
Speaker 3:Alright. I'm gonna go to start with eccentric aunt and uncle as well. I thought I had my pick, but honestly, I think Gabe changed my mind with his Gronk pick. I'm gonna go with Charles Barkley as my eccentric aunt and uncle.
Speaker 2:That's good. That's that's fantastic.
Speaker 3:The round the round mound of rebound, just an amazing personality, one of the funniest NBA players to ever exist, honestly, I think, in the game. Justin, all around great guy, Charles Barkley, the perfect eccentric aunt and uncle I think you could ever have,
Speaker 5:honestly.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Alright.
Speaker 4:Well, I I I was thinking an all hockey lineup. I have an all hockey lineup here. I I think I might go three or four, though. I I might have to pivot to the conspiracy theorist cousin. I might have to go Kyrie Irving.
Speaker 9:Yeah. Oh.
Speaker 2:Yeah. That's good. That's really good.
Speaker 4:Yeah. That was the one I thought you were gonna take.
Speaker 2:That's a good one. I actually don't think about that. It's really ever since the ACL Terry has been off my mind though.
Speaker 4:Fair enough.
Speaker 3:That's a good one. Yeah.
Speaker 1:That is good. So I have the back to back here. Yep. And with the back to back, I'm gonna take the Pat McAfee show kinda duo here. Oh.
Speaker 1:So we're gonna start with the conspiracy theorist cousin. Give me Raj.
Speaker 2:Oh, okay. Give me Aaron Raj.
Speaker 3:Give me
Speaker 1:Aaron Raj. I'm not gonna talk about why he's a conspiracy theorist, but I think you guys understand.
Speaker 3:But we know.
Speaker 1:And then for the eccentric aunt and or uncle, it's gonna be the uncle who's the more eccentric personality currently going right now than Pat McAfee himself.
Speaker 2:That's a good one. There you go. Okay.
Speaker 3:There you go.
Speaker 2:That's good. I'm starting to think my uncle pick might not line up with the rest of yours. You guys all have really good ones. But, yeah, Owen, let's hear yours.
Speaker 4:I would say for my eccentric aunt or uncle, I actually I have two picks, but I think I'm gonna go with the one that's a little bit more, current. Brent Burns. Do you guys know who Brent Burns is?
Speaker 3:Yes. Brent Burns.
Speaker 2:You're gonna have to a new one.
Speaker 3:You're gonna
Speaker 4:have to look him up. He currently plays for the Colorado Avalanche, previously played for the San, San Jose Sharks and the Minnesota Wild.
Speaker 3:And Toothless guy.
Speaker 4:Yes. Yes. He is, six foot four, I believe, a defenseman. He has no front teeth, like, of the front eight. He wears a giant man bun, has a huge beard.
Speaker 4:He was actually in the show Vikings, but he owns a zoo with, like, pythons and a bunch of other stuff. And in the off season, he, like, lives in a sprinter van. Drives all around the country, works out on the side of the road to keep in shape for hockey season, and he's always got something going on. I I think that, you know, he would probably bring, like, a baboon or something to Thanksgiving, and it would probably wear be wearing, like, a a nice sweater vest. And, yeah, it would it would be a good time.
Speaker 9:Sounds like this guy has conspiracy theories as well, honestly. I like how
Speaker 1:I like how we're going through this and no one has even touched the La Z Boy or the Terrible Sports one.
Speaker 3:I'm to think. I'm gonna
Speaker 2:be honest for the Terrible Sports Stake one, I have been double thinking that one. I think that we might make a last second change if you guys
Speaker 3:are like, I was just about to pick the
Speaker 2:relatively fair question.
Speaker 4:One There clear and above great answer for this.
Speaker 3:Yes. I had it. This one was I mean, mine was gonna be pretty niche, I thought. This one was a little more recent.
Speaker 2:If you boss, you're real if you wanna keep it, if yours applies this other category, we can change it. But if not, we'll keep it as this.
Speaker 4:Would you
Speaker 2:wanna switch it to the guy no one invited? Would that work or no? Or could we do like the
Speaker 4:one that likes start arguments?
Speaker 2:Wonder likes to start that's a good way to put it. There we
Speaker 3:we go. Okay. Will will go with conspiracy theorist cousin here. Oh, I gotta think. You guys took like I feel like you took the big three.
Speaker 3:You took the Braun, Wade, and Bosch of conspiracy theory cousins here.
Speaker 9:Oh god.
Speaker 3:Who is I can't even think of who else is some crazy dude. You know what? I think I'm gonna have to pass here. I'm gonna I'm gonna take a pass.
Speaker 2:You're You got two other or you got three other categories to get picked up.
Speaker 3:I you know what? Actually, guy one who likes to start argument, give me Stephen A. Smith.
Speaker 2:That's fair.
Speaker 3:Give me Stephen A. I
Speaker 2:know. Just technically. I know.
Speaker 3:Technically, a former athlete. As much as it doesn't count, I it's know more sports personality.
Speaker 2:No. You're good.
Speaker 3:I I One who starts argument, can't who who else is better?
Speaker 2:I'm using the same technicality, so I can't get that Who
Speaker 3:else is better?
Speaker 9:I think there is a better answer. I had this guy lined up for guy with terrible sports takes. I'm going with LaVar Ball.
Speaker 2:LaVar Ball. That's good.
Speaker 1:I don't know. He okay. LaVar's been out of the spotlight for a long time now. And the only reason he was even loud to begin with was to get eyes on his on his son. Yeah.
Speaker 2:He did also play though.
Speaker 9:And he started arguments.
Speaker 1:He started
Speaker 3:some awesome Hey. This is the guy who said he could beat MJ one on one.
Speaker 1:I love Lamar Brown.
Speaker 4:I have I have heard that LaMelo is unhappy in Charlotte, so maybe he'll maybe he'll enter the spotlight.
Speaker 1:LaMelo LaMelo denied that,
Speaker 9:but I Damn.
Speaker 2:Just moved out.
Speaker 4:Yeah. Sorry. I'm I'm not an NBA guy.
Speaker 2:Alright. Pick though.
Speaker 1:So on to you, Joker.
Speaker 2:Yeah. The back to back really gets you. I won't lie. Yeah. It's tough.
Speaker 2:But alright. We're gonna give the full explanation, so bear with me throughout this one for the eccentric aunt slash uncle. When I think of that, I think of an uncle who comes home, maybe he's divorced recently. He walks in. He's got a woman by his side who is quite young compared to him.
Speaker 2:So we're gonna go with mister Bill Belichick himself. That's it. I believe that he would be walking in. Yes. His 24 year old girlfriend, and they're talking about the recent vacation they took to Maui, whatever it might be, about how they might get married one
Speaker 3:day. The cheerleading event that he had to go to
Speaker 5:for her.
Speaker 3:I mean, that's great uncle.
Speaker 9:He's not even an uncle. He's the great uncle.
Speaker 3:Yeah. He's a very old uncle.
Speaker 4:Yes. He starts addressing people by naval rank. He he corners your little cousin, ask him when he's gonna start playing lacrosse.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Exactly. Yes. No. He technically played a tiny bit, a little bit of center.
Speaker 2:I believe that d three, d two college was what it was. So that's how he counts for this one. But Belichick, I think he's the one who comes in. Your mom tells you not to question why he's there with the younger lates.
Speaker 4:So there.
Speaker 2:Yes. That'll be one. So now that we switched it to one who likes to start arguments, this one's this one's gonna hurt me to say, to be quite honest. But I'm gonna go get me Jaylen Brown. He's gonna he's gonna come in there and say, my hairline is not receding.
Speaker 2:It is this is natural hair.
Speaker 1:This is real hair, not pink hair.
Speaker 3:The argument starts over with the hair.
Speaker 1:But you can't you can't touch it, though.
Speaker 3:Yes. You can't touch it.
Speaker 2:I don't think the argument's gonna be about sports. I think it's gonna be more, my hair's always looked like this.
Speaker 3:Don't tell them to lay on a pillow. You're gonna have some little residue on Yes. From up there.
Speaker 2:Exactly. During the backyard football game, it might turn into everyone's got a little bit of black dial on their
Speaker 3:shirts and stuff. No one wants to cover him one on one, dude. 10 yards off,
Speaker 4:man. But I love James Brown.
Speaker 2:That one hurt me to say. Gabe, take it away.
Speaker 9:Oh, man.
Speaker 8:I'm just
Speaker 9:like I'm thinking of so many great answers for these other ones I've already answered. But I think for I'll go with conspiracy theory. I have a couple of La Z Boy guys I hope you don't take. But for conspiracy theory, I am gonna go Antonio Brown. I just feel like he's the type of guy that would have a lot of interesting tips.
Speaker 2:So we said no criminals. We gotta get another one up. You said Oh, no. Yeah.
Speaker 1:I kinda forgot. We're not gonna be criminals. That's my fault.
Speaker 9:Alright. Well, I'm gonna pivot in to a guy sleeping with his mouth open. I'm with I have two names right now. I think I am gonna go Jokic just because he's the type of guy that you would I mean, doesn't really care about the NBA. Right?
Speaker 9:So why would he care about football all time, whatever? He's just gonna take a nap after a couple plates of food. So give me Jokic for a guy sleeping with his mouth open.
Speaker 3:Nice. Gabe just inspired me if we're talking about bigger white dudes who are, you know, somehow athletic. I don't know if you guys know who this is, but my guy sleeping with mouth open on the La Z Boy is going to be none other than the hot dog man himself, Phil Kessel.
Speaker 4:Oh, yeah.
Speaker 3:Just an absolute unit, has played in the NHL forever. One the most notable thing this guy has done when he won the Stanley Cup, of course, filled it with hot dogs and earning him the name, the hot dog man. Phil Kessel, one of the all time NHL great personalities. He's definitely my guy sleeping with the mouth open
Speaker 4:on the boy. Strongly urge you guys all to Google a picture of this man. This man You would be surprised that
Speaker 3:he played twenty years in the NHL.
Speaker 4:Yeah. And he could dunk a basketball. Yeah. He still can, actually.
Speaker 3:He is he is a he is a physical specimen just because you don't think he would be able to do the things that he does with his weight. But guy's athletic, dude.
Speaker 4:I have to tail yours with another guy sleeping with his mouth open on the La Z Boy. This is a story for my father. So this this might not be true. This is just an anecdote. Dad, I know you're listening.
Speaker 4:You're gonna like this. Guy sleeping with his mouth open on the La Z Boy, Bruce Boudreaux. He was a NHL coach.
Speaker 3:He coached guys. For
Speaker 1:I just can't understand any of it.
Speaker 2:Yeah. He he coached for
Speaker 4:the Washington Capital's Anaheim Ducks, Minnesota Wild, and Vancouver Ducks. You, Bruce. Yes. My father used to work for the Muskegon Fury, way back in the day in the nineties when Bruce Boudreaux was the coach there. And he said that one time, he walked into Bruce's office, and he fell asleep with a chili dog at his mouth.
Speaker 4:If that does not equate to guys sleeping on his mouth open on the La Z Boy, I don't know what does. He said he had he had mustard and relish all over his tie. It it's just there's there's nothing that embodies that guy more than that story.
Speaker 3:Barbecue Bruce, man. That's his that's been his nickname. It's it's long and proud, man.
Speaker 2:Jack, you you make a great point every time they talk to you. It sounds like a made up name. Yeah. You know what? Give me Jerry the Sabre Fontaine, I don't know what any of it means, but, Jack, you're I
Speaker 1:respect you. Yes. We'll round out my team here, and I'm happy this guy got back to me. I truly didn't think he was gonna get back to me. I guess we don't have a lot of I mean, Tim's not here.
Speaker 1:We don't have a lot of golf heads here. For a guy sleeping with his mouth open on the La Z Boy, give me none other than John Daly. Yeah.
Speaker 2:Oh, yeah.
Speaker 1:None other than John Daly just sitting back drinking that new that that drink he has. The the good boys. The
Speaker 8:good boy.
Speaker 1:The good boy on the lazy boy combination. He's gonna eat all the turkey in the world, and he's just gonna lay back with his cigar and just go to bed. And then for the ones who like to start arguments, this was tough for me. I went down the personality route and someone who's been in a lot of arguments lately, also a former stealer, give me RC, Ryan Clark.
Speaker 2:Oh. There you go. Alright. We got couple minutes to make it all the way back around the horn. Owen, what's your last bit?
Speaker 4:One who likes to start arguments, Paul Bissonnette, the one of the coasts of or one of the Busy. Co hosts of the, of the Spitting Chicklets podcast also on, NHL and TNT. This guy is a Leafs diehard even though he never played for them.
Speaker 3:He's actually insane. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 4:It's insane. He got a and he he I think he probably stole an ambassador jacket and then, has worn it all the time, is is the Leafs chief of propaganda. And I don't know. I I I couldn't I couldn't imagine a guy that's more down with the Leafs than, like, anyone else that never played for them.
Speaker 3:For for a for a team that is as miserable as the Leafs are too, especially.
Speaker 2:Oh, it's pretty impressive. Conspiracy theorist cousin.
Speaker 3:My conspiracy theorist cousin, this one has been so tough for me to thank. But, you know, the guy did technically is a former athlete, so, I think I'm gonna have to go with him. Give me Joe Rogan as my conspiracy for this call.
Speaker 9:That's a good answer.
Speaker 2:Technically found an athlete. Yeah. That's that's a answer. Former athlete.
Speaker 1:Insane, Paul.
Speaker 3:Was a comedian, and, I mean, they got this is what he's known for.
Speaker 4:His bread and butter. Is comedian.
Speaker 3:Technically, he's still a comedian. This is the guy's bread and butter. Anytime on his show, he's asking his guests the most recent conspiracy he has heard. That's my guy right there.
Speaker 1:Now that we're really pulling deep into the used to be athletes bag, there's a lot that you can pick up. Oh, conspiracy theorists. I'm not gonna name them, but We were thinking of this. Quite a
Speaker 2:few. Yeah.
Speaker 9:Well, mine is a through and through athlete. I'm gonna go with Dennis Rodman for
Speaker 2:Oh, My gosh.
Speaker 1:From the parking lot.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Obvious.
Speaker 9:From North Korea. Yeah.
Speaker 2:Genuinely. Okay. I don't
Speaker 9:think I need an explanation for that. He just
Speaker 1:That might have won. Draft game.
Speaker 2:Yeah. That's a real guy. I don't know how none of us said that at this point, to be honest. That's really good. Alright.
Speaker 2:Well, for my final one, I got guys sleeping with his mouth open on La Z Boy. I'm gonna go with the man who did that during his team's walkthrough, Abdul Carter. There
Speaker 4:you go.
Speaker 2:Yes. You're joining me. Yes. He obviously was sad again because he fell asleep during the Giants walkthrough about a week ago now at this point. Yep.
Speaker 2:But, yes, just to run it through the picks for eccentric aunt slash uncle. We all went uncle, it seems. I went Bill Belichick. Gabe went Gronk. Oscar went Charles Barkley.
Speaker 2:Owen went Brent Burns and Jack. Pat McAfee. Guy sleeping on the La Z Boy, Abdul Carter for me, Jokic for Gabe, Phil Kessel for Oscar, Bruce Boudreaux for Owen, and then John Daly for Jack, conspiracy theorist cousin. I went at Michael Porter junior. Gabe went Dennis Rodman, Joe Rogan for Oscar.
Speaker 2:Kyrie Irving for Owen. And then Jack went Aaron Rodgers himself, his quarterback right now. Yeah. That's my quarterback. And then for the final category, the one who likes to start arguments, I want Jaylen Brown.
Speaker 2:I still love him, but obviously, you know, he might be having to fight for that hairline at this point. For Gabe, he went LeVar Ball, the man Oscar, Stephen a Smith, Paul Bissonnette. Is that right, Owen? Yep. Yep.
Speaker 2:Awesome. Then Jack Ryan Clark. That is our Thanksgiving dinner conversation draft. We went a little overtime. Sadie actually gave me a really good pick that I should have thrown there.
Speaker 2:Anybody who's watched eastbound down, he's a fictional character. I should have included those. Man. Kenny Powers. Yep.
Speaker 2:Please come to my Thanksgiving, of course.
Speaker 3:Guys, I think you want that.
Speaker 2:Yeah. I know. I know. Which one
Speaker 3:is I was gonna
Speaker 2:better see you there. I hope so. But, yes, that's all that we have for this edition of the Green White Report. November 23, it'll be about 02:02 by the or 01:02. We got a fixed daylight savings time on this clock over here.
Speaker 2:But, yes, that's all that we have. Thank you all for joining me. Gabe Souza, really appreciate you being here. Great job, man. Oscar Henderson.
Speaker 2:Excuse me. Owen McCarthy. Tried to take a breather, dude. Can't There you go. Did not breathe in about a minute and a half.
Speaker 2:So, yes, Owen McCarthy, Oscar Anderson, Gabe Souza, Jack David, of course, Liam Chudler earlier, Jacob Mauer, Kyle Keegan, Connor Gilly. So many names, so many great people. If you're in the car, drive home safe, get to your destination at a safe pace here. Don't speed. Wear your seat belt, of course.
Speaker 2:If you heard the PSAs earlier, you know all the rules. But for today's episode, I've been Jodez. This has been the grand white report on WDBM East Lansing. See you next Sunday. Happy Thanksgiving.
