Episode 24: Why Do I Keep Going Back to Old Habits? (Spiritually Stuck)
Hook
Are you torn between God and the world?
You love God.
You want to live for Him.
You desire to do what’s right…
But at the same time…
You feel pulled.
Conflicted.
You go back and forth constantly
One part of you wants to fully surrender…
…and another part of you still wants control, comfort, or what’s familiar.
If that’s you, I want you to know:
You are not alone.
But you also don’t have to stay there.
Intro:
Hey sis… welcome back to The Word Woman.
Here is where we talk about faith, identity, and purpose, especially for those of us navigating seasons where life feels uncertain… and we’re learning how to trust God in a deeper way one-step-at-a-time
(Music)
WHAT IT MEANS TO BE TORN
James 4:4 says:
“Friendship with the world is enmity with God…”
What is enmity: it’s a deep-rooted hatred, hostility, or antagonism, often representing a state of opposition to God or a spiritual divide between good and evil.
Now that sounds strong—but what it’s really saying is this:
You can’t fully align with both at the same time.
Being “torn” means you’re trying to hold onto God and hold onto the world
It looks like:
• trusting God… but still leaning on your own way
• wanting peace… but feeding anxiety
• desiring purpose… but staying in comfort
It’s a constant internal tug-of-war.
STORY / REAL MOMENT
Here's a real-world example.
There was a time when I knew God was calling me to grow.
To let go of certain habits, certain mindsets, even certain ways of thinking.
And I wanted to.
But at the same time…
I didn’t want to be uncomfortable.
I didn’t want to release control.
I didn’t want to fully let go of what felt safe—even if it wasn’t God.
So, I was living in this space where:
I was praying and seeking God …but I was also holding on to the very things He was asking me to release. This went on for a long time.
See, God was telling me to learn to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations and just about every time he tested me to see if I would obey, I’d shrink back. I kept going around that same mountain just as our ancestors did in the wilderness. Hurting my own self, missing opportunities that God provided and prolonging my blessings.
It created this tension in me.
I was frustrated, tired and definitely not happy
Because deep down, I knew I hadn’t fully surrendered. But you know what I learned, partial obedience is still disobedience. When you only go as far as you choose, you have not actually obeyed.
WHY YOU FEEL CONFLICTED
That feeling of being torn is a divided heart.
Matthew 6:24 says:
“No one can serve two masters…”
You will either: cling to one or pull away from the other
But you can’t fully give yourself to both.
So when you try to live halfway surrendered or halfway in control
It creates:
• confusion
• instability
• emotional and spiritual exhaustion
That’s why you feel:
stuck
drained
unsure
Because your spirit is being pulled in two directions.
WHAT THE “WORLD” REALLY IS
Now let’s clarify something…
When we say, “the world,” we’re not just talking about people or places.
We’re talking about a mindset.
The world says:
• depend on yourself
• chase comfort
• do what feels right
• control the outcome
But God says:
• Trust Me
• Walk by faith
• Surrender
• Let Me lead
So, the real conflict is:
God’s truth vs your old way of thinking
And if that old mindset isn’t renewed…
You’ll keep feeling torn.
SIGNS YOU’RE TORN BETWEEN BOTH
Let me give you some signs, just to bring clarity:
You might be torn if:
• You keep going back to what God told you to leave
• You second-guess what God already spoke
• You pray… but still rely on your own plan
• You feel guilty, but not fully surrendered
• You want change… but resist the process
It’s the result of trying to live in two directions.
HOW TO CHOOSE GOD FULLY
Now here’s the question…
How do you stop being torn? Well
1. Be Honest About What You’re Holding on To
Ask yourself:
“What am I not fully surrendering?”
Is it:
• control?
• fear?
• comfort?
• a mindset?
You can’t release what you won’t acknowledge.
2. Understand That Surrender Is a Daily Choice
This isn’t a one-time decision.
Luke 9:23
“Take up your cross daily…”
Every day you choose:
God’s way over your way
3. Renew Your Mind
Romans 12:2
If your thinking doesn’t change…
Your life won’t either.
You must replace:
• Fear with Truth
• Control with Trust
• Doubt with Faith
4. Let Go of the Middle
This is the big one.
1 Kings 18:21, Then Elijah stood in front of them and said, “How much longer will you waver, hobbling between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him! But if Baal is God, then follow him!
Listen, there is no peace in the middle. Trust me, there isn’t.
Peace comes when you fully choose God.
OUTRO
Sis…
If you’ve been feeling conflicted…
If you’ve been going back and forth being double-minded and confused…..
If you’ve been torn between what God is calling you to do and what feels comfortable…
Now you understand why.
You don’t have to stay divided.
You don’t have to stay stuck.
You can choose today:
The bible says, Today I have given you the choice between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live. You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God, obeying him and committing yourself firmly to him. This is the key to your life. Deut. 30: 19-20. NLT
Trust God fully.
Release what’s been holding you back.
Stop living in the in between…
And start walking in:
• peace
• clarity and
• purpose
