LEENALCHI – Tiger Is Coming
- The iconic track from the seminal SUGUNGGA LP, released in 2020, and our album of the year.
- SUGUNGGA is a classic Korean tale of a dragon king from the south sea, a wily rabbit, and a softshell turtle.
- The band’s sound is an amazing meld of new wave, funk, and of course, the key ingredient, pansori vocalists who just kill it.
- The band in fact is named after a classical pansori vocalist and jultagi performer from the 1880’s, and the project came about right here in Gwangju. The band members met during a 2018 performance of "Dragon King" at the Asia Culture Center in Gwangju.
Sori Flower - Four seasons (사철가)
• The song "Life Can Be Meaningless" emphasizes the value of time, urging people to prioritize loved ones and pursue their passions. It's typically performed as a calming prelude to a pansori piece called "Danga."
• the fusion gugak group Sori Flower performs a modern take on traditional music with "The Song of Four Seasons."
It must be spring now that flowers bloom in the mountains near and far.
The spring has arrived but the world is forlorn.
I was young yesterday but am sadly old today.
SE SO NEON – The Wave
- This band lead by Hwang So-yoon is just on a rocket ship to stardom. Probably the biggest “indie” band in Korea for the past few years.
- So-yoon also does some amazing solo work, having released a sophomore solo LP this year called Album Commentary: Episode 1, Love that featured some great collabs, most notably one song with RM of BTS.
Buzz버즈 - Trip To Myself 나에게로 떠나는 여행
- band best known for its emotional rock ballads. The group, which debuted in 2003, currently consists of 5 members Yoon Woo-hyun (Guitarist), Min Kyung-hoon (Main Vocalist), Son Sung-hee (Guitarist), Kim Ye-joon (Drummer), and Shin Joon-ki (Bassist)
Peggy Gou – It Makes You Forget
- Born and raised in South Korea, educated in England & Germany where she still lives, Gou was almost disowned by her parents when she graduated university and they found out she was Djing and working at a record store.
- Now one of the most famous DJ’s in the world, this song propelled her to stardom after it went viral in Europe back in 2018, and the world then learned that she is an incredible DJ that uses old school acid and house sensibilities with a modern twist.

Lee Yun-jin - Elegant Song Pt 4 (A Windy Day)
• This song, "Woljeongmyeong," is a sijo poem depicting a serene autumn night on a boat, where a gentleman humorously asks his errand boy to fetch the moon from the water.
• Most sijo poems sound rather despondent, but “월정명” is an usijo우시조 piece, which should be sung in a composed voice.
HUNJIYA – Lee
- This is from a 2017 EP titled Lineage, and t/n Kim Hyun-ji was born in Seoul and moved to the States with her parents, growing up in New York.
- She moved down to Miami for a time, but now has made a permanent move back to Seoul, where she still plies her trade.
- As the EP title would suggest, this is an exploration of Hunjiya’s roots, with her grandfather discussing how he met their grandmother, and he would wait for her to leave the salon she worked at so he could talk to her.
Lee Jung-hwa – I Don’t Like
- Another Shin Jung-hyun classic right here, the godfather of rock n roll here in Korea.
- Not much is known about this singer that I can discern in Korean or English, which is an unfortunate aspect of the time frame we’re talking about, with female singers generally given the brush off by publicists.
second aunt kimdavi둘째이모 김다비 – gimme gimme 주라주라
- Comedian, MC, and radio DJ Kim Shin Young made her debut as a trot singer under the name Second Aunt Kim DaVi with the song “Gimme Gimme.” on May 1, 2020.
- The song features an upbeat 'new trot' style aimed at relieving the stress of busy professionals.
Zzzaam – sleepwalking not sleeptalking
- This is a band out of Hongae that were a trailblazing band in the 1990’s and early 2000’s that drew major inspiration from The Velvet Underground and other 60’s sounds.
- Their self-released album "Requiem #1" appeared in 2002, followed two years later by their second and final release, "Mirror Game."
- Their consistently downtempo compositions were simply truth in advertising; Zzzaam is the Anglicization of a Korean word meaning "sleep,” and this just dropped earlier this year. Still snoring away, brilliant band.

Summer Salt – Oh Dear
- The group was originally formed around the talents of Matthew Terry (vocalist/guitarist) and Eugene Chung (drummer) during their senior year of high school. In 2012 the band fledged away from their hometown to pursue music in Austin TX.
- Eugene Chung was born in California, the child of Korean parents, and the band had their first Korean live show in Seoul earlier this year in March.

• He is an actor and a singer got famous for his song “you’re my woman” back from 2004 and then later becamevery popular on reality travelogue-like series 1 Night 2 Days (1백 2일)
• The track, which was originally sung by Cho Yong-pil, appears in Seung-ki’s album of cover versions that was released on May 19 this year. The album is entitled When a Man Loves a Woman Vol. 2.
IU - Pierrot laughs at us (삐에로는 우릴 보고 웃지)
• The song “삐에로는 우릴 보고 웃지” (Pierrot Laughs At Us) was orginally sang by Kim Wan Sun
• The song reminds us of the importance of self-reflection and connecting with our true emotions, without fear of judgment or rejection. It conveys the message that embracing vulnerability leads to growth and genuine connections with others.
Buga Kingz 부가킹즈 - Journey 여행길 Feat. 윤도현
• Bugakings, a hip-hop trio formed in 2001 with members Bobby Kim, Gandhi, and JuB Train, initially had a lukewarm reception with their debut album "[BUGALICIOUS]." However, they gained recognition with their 2nd album "[The Renaissance]" released four years later.
• The track "Journey’ (Feat. Yoon Do Hyun)" combines Yoon Do Hyun's vocals with the rapping of the Bugakings trio, representing the free spirit of a traveler.
Shin Jung-hyun – Beautiful Rivers & Mountains
- An absolute classic both for the classic Korean rock sound and the incredible story behind it.
- Shin Jung-hyun is the godfather of Korean rock and psyche, and was commissioned by the government to do this song.
- Shin, not being a fan of the regime of Park Chung-hee, decided to make something that on its face sounded like praise of Korea’s beauty whereas embedded messages gave a wink and a nod to the anti-regime critics. Eventually, word got back to the people in charge, and Shin was thrown in jail & tortured for a time.
- What a hero.

- Rooftop Moonlight is a talented duo consisting of Kim Yoon Ju and Park Se Jin, often called the female version of 10cm.
- Their song's lyrics convey a story about a person who had a disappointing day but found comfort and cheerfulness through the support of someone else. The song's sweet and refreshing melody provides a boost of energy and motivation, with a memorable line, "For sure, there is a light," serving as a reminder that there's a solution to every problem. It's a go-to song for brightening up a bad day.
Insooni 인순이 - goose's dream 거위의 꿈
- Insooni, a member of the disco girl group 'Hee Sisters' in 1978, later went solo in 1980. She faced prejudice due to her mixed Korean-African American heritage.
- This song, ‘A Goose’s Dream’, is about having a dream so precious that it gives you the strength to rise above any hardship, to chase it despite any challenge, to ‘stand in front of the cold wall called fate and face it bravely’
The Black Skirts – My Little Lambs
- Jo Hyu-il, better known as The Black Skirts, is an indie rock musician based in South Korea. In 2010, he released his debut album, 201, which won Best Modern Rock Album at the 2010 Korean Music Awards.
- This is from 2022’s Teen Troubles LP, which was Jo’s 5th career album. Kind of today’s zzzaam in a lot of ways.

- Lee Juck is a singer-songwriter who has released over 100 songs since his debut in 1995. He is the author of Fingerprint Hunter, a collection of short stories.
- The artist is celebrated for his lyrics filled with introspective questions and comforting messages, and for his ability to weave profound, poetic narratives into his songs.
Lee Lang feat Unni Choir – Generation of Tribulation
- Off one of our favorite albums of 2021 titled There Is A Wolf, this song is just so anthemic and cathartic.
- The artist says of the album itself, "When I made my third album, There is a Wolf, I was thinking about how everyone else lives and how they got to where they are in their lives; I started imagining the lives and experiences of other people in greater detail. Half the songs on that album are written from the perspective of others."
