Sound & Season is a daily audio devotional designed to connect the routine moments of life to the rhythms of the Church seasons.
This is Sound and Season. It's Friday, 15th day of Lent. Our passage today comes from the gospel of Mark chapter 6 verses 45 through 56. Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat, and go before him to the other side to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray.
Lauren Starnes:And when evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land, and he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about the 4th watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them, but when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out, for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, take heart, it is I. Do not be afraid.
Lauren Starnes:And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. They were utterly astounded, but they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened. When they had crossed over, they came to the land at Gennesaret and moored to the shore, And when they got out of the boat, the people immediately recognized him, and ran about the whole region, and began to bring the sick people on their beds to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he came, in villages, cities, or countryside, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and implored him that they might touch even the fringe of his garment, and as many as touched it were made well. This is the word of the Lord.
Lauren Starnes:Thanks be to God.
Jeffrey Heine:St. Augustine used the image of the stormy winds and waters as an illustration of sin and death that torments and fights against us. He said that Jesus walked on the sea that he might show us that there is a way to cross those waters, but rather than having the strength and ability to walk ourselves across, we hold fast to the cross of Christ to safely make the voyage into the land of the living. In Mark 6, we see that the fame of Jesus continues to spread. The primary mark of his notoriety is his authority and power to heal the sick.
Jeffrey Heine:Whether he was in the crowded villages and cities, or in the remote countryside, the people would desperately lay their sick down in front of him hoping for healing. Consider this kind of belief in the power of Jesus. It is not deeply theological or doctrinal. It is not from insight in books or lectures. It is a belief born of hope.
Jeffrey Heine:It is the hope that Jesus can do what we cannot and that he is good and willing to heal us. This faith is not merely agreeing with ideas or concepts about Jesus, this faith is looking to Jesus and believing in him.
Lauren Starnes:Pray. Prince of Peace, may the uncertainty rising within us cease. May we trust in the all powerful nature of the unshakable triune God whom we praise. You are over all things, and in you is peace. Oh, Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lauren Starnes:Glory to the father, and to the son, and to the holy spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
