The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

As broadcast April 16, 2023 with plenty of hero worship to start.  Tonight we open with the immortal Paul McCartney calling it quits publicly on this date in 1970, but we mainly focus on the more recent with the legendary octogenarian seemingly more relevant than ever.  After that it's onto celebrating the new music just out, with highlights in hour 1 from Yaeji, Little Dragon, Billie Marten, and Emily King to taste test while they dance in the stratosphere.  Part 3 sees us covering all the big tunes just out as we are Poppin Off, starting in Korea with a total sell-out tune from NewJeans and a tune from BTS's Agust D featuring IU, then we had fresh joints from Pink Sweat$ and Greta Van Fleet as well to keep the flavors varied.  Part 4 our Fresh K Cuts saw joints from Chang Kiha, deulraejang, and TAEWOO being the highlights, and that's where we shut the front door.

I.
It is 20 hours past midnight after a day so nice you kinda reeaaaaally wish it wasn’t Monday, but anyway Danno here, studio 2, GFN HQ, at work but enjoying it anyway and we hope you did as well. And this minor momentito in the cosmos is marked into history as we know it here on earth as April 10, 2023. It is as mentioned Monday night, so it’s time to let the new muses out into the cosmos and have them dance around on your plate for our big weekly taste test. New biz in the first hour to highlight from Yaeji, Blondshell, Billie Marten, and obviously many more beyond that, while also letting you know what’s live that’s coming up here in Korea. Hour 2 we get poppin with all the big new cuts out this weekend, with NewJeans & IU starting things there, and that’s followed by our Fresh K Cuts to close the show, for all the artists out with new stuff that haven’t gotten YET as big as the aforementioned leadoff hitters for part 3. Let’s get things going by having Paul McCartney call it quits, and we’ll talk about it after Beck does the remix. This is The Drop.
Paul McCartney – Find My Way Back (Beck remix)
Back on The Drop, and hoping you got a moment from the desk to get out and enjoy the sun today. However, if you didn’t, we’re always here to help with our new muses Monday night. Danno here, studio 2, GFN HQ and thanks for joining us to taste test all the fresh cuts tonight.
That was Paul McCartney from his remixes album III Imagined, which dropped in 2021. Like his unbelievable atom smashing set at Glastonbury last year to close the door on the fest, this record is so brilliantly curated, with features from Khruangbin, St. Vincent, and Phoebe Bridgers amongst others.
That was Beck’s reinterpretation of Find My Way, the original of which dropped the previous year in 2020 aka the best year ever no question about it.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast details, etc.
Let’s move into our first fresh new capers of the evening, and we’ll get a touch electronic to draw our first triangle. Up next is SBTRKT along with Toro y Moi, then we have more electrocuted fish from Yaeji and Little Dragon to draw the 2nd & 3rd glowing lines. Of course we’ll talk about what’s up after they go ding dong dang, but for now the play button is hit. This is The Drop.
_________

The Drop is back for our final airbreak of part one tonight, Danno here making it all come together in my usual disheveled but somehow together manner. Grateful to have you with us even if you were fashionably late to our Monday night new music soiree, so let’s discuss what just went up to the rings of Saturn and returned…
SBTRKT feat Toro y Moi – DAYS GO BY (…so, the rat saw god with Wednesday’s new LP just out this past Friday, and this is the latest single from UK-based producer SBTRKT’s upcoming album The Rat Road, with this joint featuring Chaz Bear aka Toro y Moi on the vox. The Rat Road drops next month.)
Yaeji – Passed Me By (…the NYC-based Korean artist is out as of Friday with her debut album called With A Hammer. Kraeji Yaeji states that the record was composed over 2 years of pandemic insanity in New York, London, and Seoul, and is a diaristic ode to self-exploration.)
Little Dragon – Slugs of Love (…the latest from the Grammy-nominated Gothenburg-based band is out with a new EP as of the weekend, and this would be the title track AND their first new music they dropped 2020’s highly lauded New Me, Same Us LP. The band says they imagine this tune being played by a couple of youngsters with rubberboots in different, sparkling colors.)
Now, we have a couple of tunes to feature from a pair of quite good albums that just dropped Friday. Wednesday as mentioned earlier were out as of Friday with the Rat Saw God LP, and it’s a rather amazing bit of business I gotta say. It’s like songs about forgotten places in America, or a secret make-out spot a young couple sneaks off to that gets found and lived in by homeless vagabonds. Very quality stuff. After that, Blondshell is also out with her self-titled debut album as of Friday, and we’ll feature a tune called Salad to make the jump to part 2. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
Wednesday – Quarry
Blondshell – Salad

II.
The Drop is back after the 2nd quarter wormhole where everything goes just a touch slower. Danno here enjoying the trippy slow motion visuals, and that was a pair of cuts just out this weekend if you’re not noticing a pattern here...
Billie Marten – God Above (…another highly anticipated album just out Friday is the latest from this UK-based folk singer called Drop Cherries. Rather incredible the level of quality that Marten is able to maintain given the rigorous output, as this would be the singer’s 4th album in just under 8 years’ time.)
Superviolet – Big Songbirds Don’t Cry (…this is the project of Steven Ciolek for those unfamiliar, better known as the lead singer for The Sidekicks who unfortunately broke up in 2020. This is one of the final teaser singles from the upcoming Infinite Spring LP, due out April 21.)
Moving along SM, #9870, podcast let us know …
Next block it’s time to draw our last triangle of the first half, and we’ll start with Daughter followed by Jana Horn and Emily King, all of which we’ll talk but not your ear off side opposite the string things. THIS is The Drop.
_________
Back on The Drop as the clock keeps ticking and we finish our new nibbles for the first half of our new muses Monday. Danno here, grateful as ever to have you with us, and our concert feature starts momentarily but not before we let you know a bit about what just happened and explain ourselves semi-thoroughly. That was...
Daughter – To Rage (…this is from the London trio’s latest record, which also dropped Friday called Stereo Mind Games. The record deals with long distance relationships and the struggle to be sober, which seems to be very close to home for them, as they do in fact now live in different places although I can’t speak to the latter.)
Jana Horn – Days Go By (…and another album that just dropped Friday is this one called The Window Is The Dream. The Texas-based singer-songwriter says that this record began as a failed poem, written initially as a waking up.)
Emily King – False Start (…and finally, something not out in full yet, this is a new single from the upcoming Special Occasion LP. This would be the NYC through and through artist’s first new project in four years’ time, which drops in full on May 5.)
So that’s it for our favorites for the first half, and in some exciting news for anyone who likes covers, Mr. Big will be playing a show July 29 at Yes24 Live Hall, so get yer tix right now. We’ll close with To Be With You, and then another cut titled Shine. THIS is The Drop, and that is halftime.
Mr. Big – To Be With You
Mr. Big – Shine

III Poppin Off
NewJeans – Zero
Agust D feat IU – People, Pt. 2
Jonas Brothers – Waffle House
JP Saxe – I Don’t Miss You
Pink Sweat$ - Moments
Ricky Montgomery – Eraser
Greta Van Fleet – Meeting The Master

NewJeans – Zero
- Now, admittedly, this song is a straight up ad, but then again would not be the first time that the American cola industry has infiltrated Korean culture down to the core.
- Nothing announced with this one, just a one-off promo, but as usual, making waves.
Agust D feat IU – People, Pt. 2
- Now, the song features IU, but as anyone knows, one doesn’t merely feature IU and expect to outshine the most popular artist inside Korea.
- However, Agust D aka SUGA from BTS has an outside chance and might be the only artist locally able to do so.
Jonas Brothers – Waffle House
- This is a tune debuted over the weekend on SNL in the US, and is the latest single from the Jonas’ upcoming album.
- The album is imaginatively titled The Album, and is out in all its anodyne glory May 12.
JP Saxe – I Don’t Miss You
- So, this is the lead single to an as yet unexplained or at least properly announced album that is due out later this year.
- The song was co-written by John Mayer, and produced by Malay. The artist says the song is basically Saxe telling himself lies about an ex.
Pink Sweat$ - Moments
- T/n David Bowden is out with this joint as of last Friday, just a standalone for now.
- That being said, it’s generally just good to see the Philly artist out with some new stuff, and this is pretty good biz.
Ricky Montgomery – Eraser
- This is an American singer-songwriter who’s not crazy popular just yet, but Mr Loverman and Line on a Stick in 2020 during the pandemic’s heights went viral, and now Montgomery appears courtesy of Warner, with this being the latest standalone and nothing larger announced.
Greta Van Fleet – Meeting The Master

Part 4 – Fresh K Cuts
TAEWOO – Coffee
nynas – SUGAR
deulrejang – People
ALEPH – T
Risso – Daydreamer
Chang Kiha – Do
Kid Wine – I Cried

Facts
TAEWOO – Coffee
- For those unfamiliar, this is an artist t/n Han Taewoo who appears on the MECHIVE label.
- This would be TAEWOO’s fourth standalone release since debut in 2021.
nynas – SUGAR
- This is the first single out since the young artist’s debut EP dropped last year called SUNSET.
- Nothing on the bio front for this artist, but definitely gaining a pretty steady stream of listeners in this nascent time.
deulrejang – People
- This from an album that just dropped at the end of March called Hi, I am Dulrae Jang.
- T/n Jang Deulrae, this is definitely an album you should check out if you like what’s coming up.
ALEPH – T
- This is a new standalone single from the artist, who appears courtesy of Studio White Hands.
- True name Alvin Lee, the singer dropped a debut LP called 21’ Archive last year if you’d like to go digging for more.
Risso – Daydreamer
- Another album that dropped at the end of March was called pat pat, by this artist.
- Risso is the moniker of Kim So-ri, and this would be her third studio album to date.
Chang Kiha – Do
- The main man from the long-running Kiha & The Faces is out with this single but without the mugs in tow on his own.
- This is a standalone single which I guess kind of fits, as he and the aforeplayed 2nd tune IU used to be a couple, so it’s rather strange how life lines up sometimes, even on a simple playlist.
Kid Wine – I Cried
