big guy was beligerant he came forc way in I should have never have opened the door we need to get into some meat this door right here is guaranteed to keep the bad guys out and we've installed over 15,000 not one has been breached not only looks sexy right but offers maximum security that whole level of anxiety kind of dissolves away

[Music] hi my name is James I'm the founder of Boss security screens and this is MJ MJ is our chief security adviser but he's got a really long extensive career in law enforcement and security yeah thanks J I appreciate you having me back again today I love talking about security you know that's what I do but uh one of the questions I get all the time and uh I am not an installer yeah uh so I'm going to be I'm going to be the host today and I'm going to turn this back over to you one of the questions I get is how do you install or how do you properly install a fortress door yeah so I'll start by saying not all doors are equal like you can go to a Home Depot or Lowe's and you can get a standard security door there and if that's all you can get it's better than nothing so I don't want to dismiss it I just want to be clear that different doors perform differently and you can get a top tier door or you can get a mediocre door if you've got the budget get the top tier door this door right here is guaranteed to keep the bad guys out and we've installed over 15,000 not one has been breached what's neat about the door is it mounts over the existing door so we don't have to modify the existing door at all just leave it right there yeah and if you've got one of the old school Home Depot Low's doors on there we can remove those that for you of course and put this premium door on there everything mounts into the perimeter of that door and what we want to get to is the subframe of the home we need to get into some meat now what what do you mean by the subframe well we'll use uh 3 and 1/2 in wood screws at a minimum to Anchor this Frame around that door and you want those screws every 8 in so on a house if I understand you correctly on a house when they frame up a house you're going to have some studs on both sides and then there's opening yep we want to get into all of that and so you want to get into the meat of the house framing exactly right and that takes what longer screws or it takes longer screws and it takes more screws okay you know the one thing to look for when you have anyone installing a security door is the screws at least every 8 Ines right some companies you know they're paid per door they're not paid per hour so they'll put screws in a few screws cover it up and get out of there cuz time is money and they got another eight doors to do that day right mhm so you want to get those screws in there every 8 in and then you want to be sure that it's fully cauled now purpose of the caulking is going to keep the moisture out it's going to keep the bugs out but it's also kind of screwed and glued all right with the caul in there you got the screws the screws are covered so they're not easy to find and then you've got the claing to keep that glued on there nice and safe the doors themselves are important to look at too this is is a 12x 12 per square in weave of mesh now why why is that important cuz I've heard about weave yeah but what what makes this different than what's out there on the market the standard uh mesh density is 10 x 10 okay and 10 x 10 meaning per square inch you got 10 horizontal strands and 12 uh 10 vertical ones that's 10x 10 and so you want to get the 12 by 12 okay and you want the mesh it's a little technical but you want it to be 035 in nice thick wire and you want nice dense mesh right just look for the 12 x 12 right that's that's the best start to go the thing is and I've tested this my background is mechanical engineering the 12x 12 is 75% stronger in tensil than the 10 x10 so we we take a piece of mesh we clamp it and we load it load it load it till it fails I knew it was going to be stronger cuz you got more wires there 12 x 12 versus 10x10 but 75% stronger what I encourage people is look when you're securing your home you don't want to go cheap right cheap security ain't good and good security ain't cheap cheap right so when you spent a few more nickels to get a premium door at 2 a.m. in the morning you're going to be glad you did when some creep is trying to get in right absolutely you know last thing you want is going to be like dang it I should have gone with something better so in terms of locks how does this qualify then more as a fortress style door well uh it has a three-point locking mechanism so when I lock it I get all three beaks to engage one two three and the common breach on the production doors there's only a onepoint lock there if you take a crowbar you can you can crowbar that male piece out of the female piece and the door opens correct it's very common breach right or if it uses the perforated steel when you bang the perforated steel with a hammer you don't even need one this big the per steel caves in right it doesn't hold and I've seen that I've seen that a lot on my law enforcement call outs and you reach through and you unlock the door cuz it's not double keyed exactly so uh the production doors again you know if that's all you have and that's all you can get it's better than nothing right if you spend a few more nickels you're going to get a three-point locking mechanism which cannot be Pride you need the pry all three at the same time you got to get to all three locations and they're spread far enough out and the bite is deep and let me tell you no home is square nor is it in a plane all right so when you get a production door and you try to pin it on there screw it in there something ain't going to be right right that's where the custom door down to the eighth of an inch really gets you a door that not only looks sexy right but offers maximum security how long does it take normally to install a door like this uh it's one person probably two hours two hours yeah one person so two hours they come in they they order up a door yeah get it and they come out in two hours they've got safety on their front door yeah you get all the safety you've got a great visibility head to toe looking out right you've got privacy if someone's trying to look in because privacy is a function of the source of light if it's bright outside and not so bright inside if you're inside you have more privacy right same thing if you're on the inside looking out if it's bright outside like today you can see real well out there correct so you got all the great visibility you got all the airf flow you've got light coming in many times the front door once you close that standard front door that whole hallways night is dark right but if you have a screen door you keep screen screen lock open up your standard door you got all the fresh air you got all the uh visibility out and you have nice sunlight coming in right before I started this company there I don't know if I told you the story some guy forced his way into my home yeah I thought it was a neighbor and there's a knock at the door and I opened it up a jar to say hello and this big guy was beligerant he came forc way in I should have never have opened the door right I should have never have done that and if there's any takeaway you tell everyone in the family just cuz someone's at the door doesn't mean you need to open it in fact you shouldn't you don't have to if it's important they'll always come back or they'll call or leave a exactly don't open the door right that was my mistake he had the wrong place he was looking for his wife I don't know him I don't know his wife he had the wrong place but you could see how this could have been something really bad he could have had a weapon it could have been more than one person now that I've got these that's never an issue cuz if there's a knock at the door I can open my standard door the screen door is locked there's no one getting in I can have a conversation safely with that person on the other side of the screen that's one of the things I love most well I know that I uh mentioned this in one of our other segments but uh when somebody is a victim of a burglary they always have that feeling of being violated that they're just not safe anymore uh one of the things that I have found uh when we talk to people who've gone through and and put your screens on is that that that sense of has gone away you know and that they're they feel secure in their home again and I don't know you just about can't put a price tag on feeling secure and many times we don't know how much anxiety we're carrying until it actually goes away right right so we live our normal day-to-day lives we're always looking over our shoulders we're always worried about that thump in the middle of the night and then when you get this kind of security on your home that whole level of anxiety kind of dissolves away you know it may not even be home it could be just my family there by themselves how much does it cost to put something like this on your home I I don't want to be that kind of company that kind of hides the pricing and forces you to get an appointment and then the person's there trying to sell you something that there's no way that you could afford it is important to note that every screen uh is designed for that opening so it really does depend on the width and the height of that opening obviously bigger doors are going to be more expensive a door this size standard door is about

$2,100 to install it is another $300 so with sales taxs everything included just for one door you're looking at just under about thir $2,500 $2,500 uh like anything else the more openings you secure the less expensive each opening becomes so if someone orders just one door and that's it it's a little under $2,500 if you're securing you know one door one slider and seven windows well there's an economy of scale there and you get it less expensively well I know that I don't hear too many complaints from the people who have these no one says come get that thing they've never said come take it off the house because uh they seem to love it so they buy they buy more yeah yeah yeah well they usually do yeah cuz the the goal is is to secure every window every door all right James thank you so much I appreciate you taking the time thank you
