What is The Infinite Game Podcast?

The Infinite Game Podcast exists to capture yesterday's and today's wisdom to help us all play life at a higher level. With topics of mental health, spiritual health, and physical health being the focus for pursuing mastery in the game that matters the most: life. There will be two styles of shows, one, with Henry and Harrison talking, the other, hosting guests to glean insights from them!

The Infinite Game is a project that believes the expansion of our capacity and the shouldering of personal responsibility is the key to changing culture.

Henry how we doing great we're back good Monday weather was nice wasn't too hot
might have been our last lacrosse tournament actually driving with a
steering wheel if Elon Musk does what he says he's gonna do we'll see we always
talk about though how awesome it'll be we are not I mean I will always have a
car that you can drive but to have self-driving with internet yeah yeah
it's been awesome experience the weekends already feel like little time
warps where you get back and you feel like you've experienced a month worth of
emotions and then throw on top of that on the way out I typically listen to
four or five podcasts on the way down listen to a ton of podcasts and then
when you're there you're just immersed in thought how can you help individuals
what does the future of the lacrosse Academy and what we're doing need it's
very emotional I mean you want things to be turning out as well as possible so
there's just it's two days three days but it feels like a month when you get
back yeah oh yeah I mean if you're a first time listener what Henry and I do
we have a club an Academy and then right now a platform software system a tool but
everything is about how can you order and maximize somebody's not talent but
you're just trying to bridge the gap between who they are and who they want
to be you want them to be you know trying to raise some standard in their
life but in the area yeah for sure and when we go out east for these
tournaments it's a constant reminder one recognizing how far you are behind from
national norms not being discouraged by it but immediately pivoting pivoting
into okay what systems have to get set up immediately yeah what has to change
it's all it all comes back to the three words that Tony Robbins always says raise
your standards it just comes back to that comes back to him out of times I
said you must increase your expectation of what is required of you daily on
defense increase your expectation of the effort that it takes on offense off ball
increase your expectation of what it takes my whole mindset and just when I'm
repeatedly bringing to the awareness of players is these facts of trade-offs
there we're out there so there's this level of like ignorance is bliss when
you don't meet the the highest level if you never come in contact with the
highest level you almost are just in this ignorance and blissful state of you
don't understand how great things can be yep and there's trade-offs to the high
school you're almost protected yeah there you're the high school you're the
small-town hero when you're continually taken in front of the best and you have
to stare at your inadequacies the trade-off is it's pretty tough it's
pretty painful but the awareness leads to you have a choice yeah you can see how
great you can be oh absolutely absolutely and that's the fun thing it
immediately gets pivoted to daily systems and daily practices yeah that is
what obviously we do at the Academy what the whole point of the club is and then
of course you project in the platform foundational discipline structure order
allocating times to things that matter setting clear aims compelling visions
all of that it's just foundational skills that have to be put in place but
you could basically categorize that as raise your standards but also I get back
and this was I was reflecting on today which is the power of discipline and
focus focus is is saying no to a lot of things discipline is saying yes but you
have to qualify that it is we talk about every time well no I'm more saying it's
discipline is saying yes when you don't want to yeah focus is saying no when you
don't want to you know I have this great screenshot I've been going to sub stack
it's such a great scroll compared to X if you've got a burn time but this person
it's a great it's a great thought about focus he says the real power of focus
isn't just to direct your attention on a task at hand it's to channel all of your
inner resources in the same direction over a long period of time that's just
the first port first part I don't mean to bring everything back to you project
but there was this initial insight that I said people fail because of lack of
clarity inconsistency and not knowing what commitment is yeah if you don't
understand what long-term commitment is which is a stack up that day that you
think was so hard stack that up for 500 days 100 200 300 stack that up for a
very long time and stop being emotional in between it right you need passion of
course you need intensity enthusiasm but you don't need drama you don't hear that
internal narrative the Peter Diamandis talks so well about the difference between
passion and purpose purpose is knowing the why passion is just like a flame
that potentially could go out it's yeah more important to know you're what he
calls the massive transformational purpose yeah which is the MTP which is
creates the well repeatable action this is powerful so here's the second part
that I want to kind of point out more where he goes the point of having a
personal myth is in having an internal structure that supports you as you
navigate this overwhelming world the point is in having all of your inner
resources united and channeled in the same direction the point is in feeling
like you're standing on firm ground even when the whole world is shaking that's
that that's what an entire weekend workshop should be about yes when you have time when
you have a weekend off that's what it's not you that's what a Sunday's for
breaking down what is it called the internal personal personal personal
myth your personal myth well and this is a great thing to qualify a myth is not
we've been distorted by this thinking that fiction and myth is similar a myth
is a perennial pattern it's a perennial pattern and obviously the Odyssey just
came out the return of the father the elevation of the Sun the hero's journey
that's a myth and it's not fake that's very real and so when you look at myths
as these perennial patterns that exists across time and across people's lives
that right there what is my personal myth that you're living as the world is
shaking there's something solid that is an incredible an incredible thing yeah
awesome those two together long-term commitment with some sort of uniting
narrative that will exist across time and there's a great quote I think it's
by William James but he says the wise man only focuses on one thing sinner to
saint now the transformation of the individual the integrity the elevation
you know one thing that we say with you project give people the dignity of order
that affords flourishing afford meaning like if I can afford something I can
have it if you don't have that dignity if you don't have that discipline if you
don't have that foundational those foundational skills habits whatever it
may be you can't even afford it it's not gonna it's not gonna come your way okay
excellence is not an accident but I love that you need to focus but you also need
that personal myth I'm an overcomer there's something in me that is
unstoppable that can make things happen you know we are created in the image of
God God is a creator we are co-creators he's given us the dignity of being an
agent of having an actual hand in this story all of that I mean that is genuine
that should be at the core of your being yeah so powerful yeah that's incredible
it lays at kind of this the base of not the problems we see but it's the
solution to unlock that unstoppable consistency in any player because it
creates that just consistent narrative across no this is why I'm dedicated to
this is why I've been assigned this is my field in my plot to take care of and
if you assign who you are to like it said in the middle it in the middle of the
quote it gives the consistency what is it in the middle of part of the quote
again potentially the point is having all of your inner resources united and
chain united a direction yeah yeah congruence alignment all of that very
powerful here's the second one that I love I'm taking this from substat just
putting out amazing quotes and I guess the person's name Sidney Smith looks like
a pretty old text but he goes a great deal of talent is lost in the world for
want of a little courage every day sends to their graves obscure men whom
timidity prevented from making a first effort who if they could have been
induced to begin would in all probability have gone great lengths in
the career of fame the fact is that to do anything in the world worth doing we
must not stand back shivering and thinking of the cold and danger but jump
in and scramble through as well as we can it will not do to perpetually
calculate risks and adjust nice changes did very well before the flood when a
man would consult his friends upon an intended publication for a hundred and
fifty years and live to see his success afterward but at present a man waits and
doubts and consult his brother and his particular friend to one day he finds he
is 60 years old but he's lost so much time and consulting cousins and friends
that he has no more time to even follow their advice now that kind of weaved
around and I like that initial punch more than anything right that first two
sentences is exactly where it is it's obviously the end is the reality of the
window of opportunity yes yeah yeah exactly there's so many times we see of
course with the players we interact with I could also audit my life now
fortunately we've been people that we've always said ask for forgiveness later go
for it you have to you have to try you know there there's certain things that
the regulations the governing body yeah that those are gonna be what slow you
down but and this is the great thing about trying to stay on the tip of the
spear of technology which once these new technologies come out you have this
window of time to apply them as fast as possible until well basically until the
not even monopolies but the people who have the most to lose don't get to the
edge cases that have the highest risk yeah and so you got to get to the
riskiest point and go as hard as you can there yeah as fast as possible and I just
loved that I also think courage I've seen recently and I've been diving into
my player to the players about this that the youth really associates love with
comfort meaning yeah in high school their relationship the person they think
they're they love is the one that makes them feel more most comfortable yeah and
I was explaining to them one day love is that which draws out what's good in you
it's to will the good of the other and that means love takes ultimate courage
because what is drawing what's good out of you at moments seems like it could
completely break you yeah and so we always say like your sport your vocation
what you're giving yourself to is an incredible lover it's always pulling out
what's best in you and it takes insane courage to give your heart to something
that is always almost making you uncomfortable yeah there's this
incredible I need to find it it's in my notes but it is all about let me find it
love is not affectionate feeling but a steady wish for the loved person's
ultimate ultimate good as far as it can be obtained that takes courage when you
are going into an agreement with something that is your current state is
not what is acceptable in the future like you're meant for so much more it
takes courage to walk into that oh absolutely yeah it takes some sort of
not even internal monologue or trigger but I won't obviously I won't say the
full word but I would almost tongue-in-cheek cheekily say there's been a
lot of great things accomplished by a man just saying f this effort and in
some I say that all the time yeah to that feeling of timidity that I've just
pointed to to then mustering the strength is what comes to mind I don't
love that saying but you have to it it gets to the point where you you've got to
just jump you got to go and it's not the absence of that feeling it is the the
well to go screw the feeling to not go assures that you're definitely not going
to accomplish anything yeah and that feelings gonna grow and the feeling is
gonna grow and the one parable in the Bible that we love is the one of the
talents yeah and it one highlights that everyone is given a different amount of
gifts and people always look man that person's so lucky they're blessed with
this and that and this well a large blessing means you better do a lot with
it yeah and that takes one incredible courage to look in the mirror and be like
damn I've been I've been given this I cannot spoil it and without courage
you're gonna be the person that buries in the sand and is is too scared to do
anything with what they've been given yeah absolutely it I try to I want to
try to boil some of these not even meta ideas like courage is such a philosophical
yeah concept but what I mean what it comes down to is you want something and
actually boldness to say what it is well say it one but more so an action is
gonna flicker in your at least how it works for me yeah I will always imagine
something in my head the moment I see it feel it I know it's gonna happen well
it's gonna be a matter of also at the same time a lot of moments in the past
we've had the same flicker on the same day remember we came home and we thought
man we need to go back to the gym tomorrow at five yeah there's just this
this rumbling meaning a spirit will be oh yeah revelation revelation all that
all that stuff and so that there's gonna be something that flickers into your
mind calls to you pulls you inspires you moves you that you aspire to you know an
action then is going to reveal itself something that or you're gonna have to
act to make it happen you know there's and the book I love I am that Maharaji
says on this plane action it's all that matters motive for action and action
intention but you eventually have to get into the plane of demonstration it has
to this this idea you imagine you have to bring it into your cells incarnate it
embody it acted that's where the courage comes you know you feel it you're on that
line of tension where you could come back to the comfort zone you know could
procrastinate that happened all I'm not perfect at all I'm procrastination just
because of how many things are vying for our attention at times you know I'm
things that I love to do want to do want to create want to pursue want to
continue to push then there's things that are like I have to do those people
need me have to respond to this create this get kind of this kind of back end
plumbing of these systems I mean all the businesses we have right now it's
literally us building it and so we have whether it be it's prioritizing execute
but if you don't prioritize what's gonna happen is it's overwhelm and step back
nearest necessary nearest necessary task yes and so when I'm we're talking about
courage my mind goes well okay this is now we're in the motivational realm and
I don't like that I like being in the strategist realm what is that action
pattern that strategy that actual practical insight that I need and it's
usually going to be prioritized and execute remind yourself what do I
actually want who do I want to become what am I willing to sacrifice for this
what is that step that must be taken yeah I think courage to assign it to
anything outside your current limits today exactly today we were working on
footwork and I continue to say I've seen you do that before find your limit find
your limit when it comes to being aggressive with the angle at which you
come in getting your feet outside your hips you've got to have courage when
you're training if not you're gonna stay in the repetition of things you've done
in the past that's why I think it's a little dangerous as a coach at times to
keep telling a player no that's good that was good that was good yeah you
don't want them to think that that's the final train station they're getting off
at like oh yeah hundred percent you definitely took a step there now you've
got that on level one now we got to get to level two okay you got the footwork
now we need the hips shoulders eyes and then you get that now we need the
cadence to snap you got that now we need your head outside your hips now apply
that obviously I'm speaking from across a domain of I think I could say mastery
but apply that to anything else it you have to develop taste that's what I love
listening more and more on the AI side of things AI is going to be an
unbelievable tool it is an unbelievable we need to do a whole episode a week yes
Henry and I absolutely stay on the leading edge of this you know it's
interesting to see what's gonna happen actually in the business side of things
with these open and closed models and and yeah what happens there but here's
what I love the people who are leading this I mean leading us the lead
commentators per se it always gets back to what is the point of impact your
passion the the pain point and what is your taste like you actually have to
develop taste if not is just pure AI slop it is to exist in reality money it
meets reality in some sort eventually meets reality but I'm more saying is AI
is either abdicating your thinking okay yeah making you dumber or it's a tool
through which you're constructing some vision something you want to bring into
this world ridiculously powerful it's allowing you to do things you originally
didn't have the skill skill set for it's intelligent you're having access to
intelligence yeah but what I think is powerful is you have to develop your
taste you have to develop your skills you have to develop your understanding
of hey I'm dealing with this problem I bet other people are too if I can figure
out a solution for this figure out how how to dial in the pitch the prop the
experience the interface there might be something here and it's only done through
experience oh yeah iteration the idea the idea because this gets clickbait for
everything all this new model just one-shot in my website nothing is
one-shotted ever in life and I said that all weekend when I but for the game I'd
lay out these buckets of variables that you're trying to develop IQ lacrosse
skill leader as a teammate and then internally like your spirit having
endurance in the game and being able to bring passion to it the whole time and
certain variables you can develop IQ when you're sitting on the couch you
know scrolling through Instagram looking for some videos trying to find a coach
giving a little dialogue on lacrosse but spirit endurance that's something that
needs experience like you guys have to get just sit in your room and be like oh
develop courage you got to go do it you have to turn the YouTube off you have to
turn the music off you have to put the phone down you have to take the headphones
off and you need to go out and actually meet yourself in that hard and lonely
moment wait yeah and that's why I think Harrison has years of going on a run
early in the morning I went on a bike ride one time with just a flashlight
that you like take on the beach at night wasn't that big tight taped it onto my
bike and rode on the Loveland bike trail that we call it it's just the Ohio bike
trail at 4 in the morning it was terrifying when I took my headphones off
and just heard silence and the funny thing about the flashlight every time I
hit a bump the tape would like readjust and then for a while it would be pointed
at the trees and I couldn't even like see the path oh yeah that's just one of
those repetitions of courage just doing things which got into the dark weird I
don't I think I've unfortunately not unfortunately I've been working in the
morning meaning cognitive side and I've been pushing my workout just to the
afternoon right when I get home it's been nice but there's something that I so
miss yeah about going out into the darkness you know starting that day with
the run the lift the pull-ups outside it cannot be it cannot be replaced in
college literally would wake up at base 330 335 grab my stick go on a run if
you're let's say just a young player unwilling to go on a run with your stick
crazy cuz you're embarrassed because you're embarrassed wake up earlier
there's so many things that like Henry saying courage is Emerson line do the
thing have the power you have to do the thing can you have the courage to do the
thing you don't deserve to have the power yeah visualization powerful
obviously I mean I've read every law of attraction book law of vibration her
medic her medicism all of that like New Age style stuff but then visualization
that just gets back to the Bible of seeing it asking believing it we're
seeing it as it's already been received visual visualization is so powerful for
for athletes of course I mean Jack Nicklaus said you never step up to the
ball without seeing the ball perfectly struck and exactly where he wanted it to
land on the green or on the fairway but that's just priming your nervous system
that's not the actual doing of the thing you know every day you should start your
day with a compelling vision of the future bright and alive walking in you're
either stuck in the memories of the past or you're walking towards a compelling
vision of the future that's alive but that doesn't accomplish it that doesn't
accomplish it at all it's priming my mind my heart my nervous system for it
then the day is action it is hammering away it's one step at a time it's
executing it's prioritizing and then executing again that's it that's it so
you cannot you can't action your way to success no hundred percent you cannot
overstate the benefit of having the relative standard two examples and that
is one thing Harrison hopefully our physical embodiments of to the people we
get to see every day of just like we're not showing up weak out of shape
unskilled unprepared to lead like their players are seen every day leaders that
are prepared yeah but outside of it it cannot be understated the value of going
and searching for your own heroes essentially their own guidepost meaning
those years of reading and height in college the amount of times we would
just read three four hours a day on the weekends literally spend a whole entire
day just consuming a whole book in one sitting frequently yeah like that that
adds up oh yeah if you're a young player and you've got time and you've got time
it's not even like you need to read a whole book you just need that nugget of
gold yep we always said I'd give a book 50 pages if it gave me one or two nuggets
of gold I'd keep on reading because a small bit of transformation is worth it
oh yeah there's such outsize returns for just like a little change in the lens of
how you see things yeah it's exponential ideas are exponential because if I give
you one apple seed it doesn't give you one app it doesn't that tree does not
grow one apple yeah it grows thousands of apples season after season and those
apples have seeds and then it just goes again exponential ideas in or good ideas
in good ideas out that's why it is protect your mind at all costs that's
why social media of course is ridiculously detrimental you know I
cannot believe some of the the young players young kids that we have on
tick-tock and all of those things you hire I'm not gonna obviously this person
hasn't maybe no idea actually I won't say it but it's it's shocking sometimes
the conversations overheard and knowing or intuiting that that is a tick-tock
algorithm that you've fallen down yeah if a 12 year old is talking about deep
conspiracy theories yeah that's a tick-tock algorithm yeah and that is
incredibly harmful a conspiracy theory is when you're at the proper age almost
interesting to engage with because there is that radical sense of open-mindedness
that you need to have yes to critically analyze things but at a certain age if
you're young it's incredibly detrimental so disorienting so disorienting I mean I
we say all the time our Instagram algorithms since we have multiple
different accounts for businesses and just like things we're trying to launch
each one will give us a different type of feed and one will just be the
streamer culture the influencer and I think Elon probably has this famous
tweet of just like be a builder oh yeah and it's not a major builder not it
yeah makers and takers but also there's like people people that live in reality
and are actually contributing to society and then those that are disconnected
from reality and I think that's what reading books does you could say your
head's just in a book oh the the books again oh you're going back to the books
again the books are someone's life someone's
entire life the reality of their life and what they built is in 150 pages 200
pages 600 pages I don't know how you couldn't find that important all you see
on Instagram tick-tock those algorithms are people literally entertaining you not
contributing anything valuable no this person decided to write a book of
everything they felt valuable yeah if someone's if some social media was just
what someone felt insanely valuable to share instead of like this is going to
entertain you it's so different think about what we just did though with the
you project my whole that is my whole initial like in not insight and white
paper but in the construction of the you project it's we don't have social media
anymore we don't have platforms where you are sharing your pursuit your life
and being supported in that and allow getting the opportunity to support
others and theirs it is pure modern social media it's a distraction platform
meaning you have entertainers and then you have those who are just the you
project now is just my favorite app of all time it's all my favorite people and
I just get a vision and dream and to have a Strava but to construct it with
some different features and get more powerful and add what we've always felt
so empowering which is the daily mindset transformation yeah that's
accountability chats I mean it is truly I will link it in the show notes later I
haven't done a website pass it's been pure product development message
construction building the narrative actual yeah building the actual platform
that will be underneath the narrative and message the marketing those things but
when the website properly displays how beautiful this app is and I will have I
would if there's a way to message and be like hey can I get in I will give you a
code so fast come look at this platform join our team there will be that though
Henry and I will have a private group because you can get team codes that's the
whole thing team codes club code school codes you know you start with your group
and then there's a micro macro community effect that will be cool to see but yeah
no it's uh there's just one there's one quote that I think is spot-on with the
summer that we go through which is just like such a grind we really miss out on
the monastic life that we have when the players go back in school and we get a
drink a couple pots of coffee and stuff but it's love to be real must cost it
must hurt it must empty us of self mm-hmm and I actually that is kind of the path
of union with what you are pursuing becoming who you are you're just like
constantly emptying yourself of what in the beginning was holding you back of
fully becoming something yeah and we're seeing that I mean I got an awesome
video before we walked up there of one of our players just on a walk with
another player having a one-handed pass while they're walking no just walking
down the street a little one-handed pass going back and forth and that's like
that's that's just emptying yourself of self yes and continuing to be more
filled with that which brings you full purpose yeah this is all this is a hard
goal to write specifically and to quantify but we will have been very
successful in this area meaning just local local impact yeah if we've
radically transform the lacrosse culture and make it very cool to be great and to
put in just tons and tons of work I mean that's what yeah we're already seeing
in terms of the feedback loop the project is having yeah with logging the
extra work sharing it supporting it celebrating it seeing it as that which
is celebrated yeah it's cool it's cool to give effort towards something yes it's
cool to hurt it's cool to hurt for something yes because everyone is there
everyone's there with you like everyone knows how tough it is but then it's also
rewarding to be tough that's the thing also too it just works yeah meaning the
work works to see how good these players are getting and to see I'm not saying I'm
overly receptive but when you work with enough people you see in their eyes you
see that flicker where they start to believe they start to say I've heard you
say this before I think I now I'm feeling it that's when it changed it is a truly
rewarding top-hand today on the lefty shot oh there's so many breakthroughs
every single day you get a more when you just pour more and more and more volume
negates luck that's always an incredible thing to take and just to recap because
yes we can talk philosophically but it has to be practical and what we've
talked about and touched on is always around these ideas of clear aim
compelling vision intentional action time allocation prioritize execute daily
towards what matters that is and I said it last time which is fundamentally to
be useful if I look at my life mission is a individual change to help people
change their it's to change their lives the integrity of the individual the
elevation of the individual yeah right glorify God sanctify the world
usefulness the dignity the dignity of the individual deserves that yes yeah
every kid deserves the skills knowledge the assistance yes to change their life
in that way a hundred percent but here's what I think it's great to boil down and
make definitional which is usefulness is allowing someone to transform their time
and attention alter their time and attention towards and whilst pursuing a
real goal something that it matters that's how you impact someone because if
not what we're just gonna be a slave to our addictions constantly floating
wandering being aimless and then get to the end of it well really didn't live at
all no didn't accomplish anything fulfilling there from one pleasure to
the next one distraction to the next every single day shot tired exhausted
sleeping in not motivated sloppy did not unacceptable did not feel what it was
like to contribute to a larger story which is worthy and brings meaning to
everything you do I think that's solid yeah I think that's a solid 100 episode
and hey guys as a reminder if you get something out of today's show one of the
ways it grows is sharing the show and definitely a lot of value I'm thinking
about there it is always a return to finite infinite games obviously podcast
is called the infinite game finite games in that fit that frame we haven't talked
about it in a long time the frame is a very fun one to understand meaning a
finite game what it is and it's a game that not so much you're trying to bring
to an end but it's it's gonna have a specific in you're gonna winner you're
gonna lose you're developing skills within a very specific time domain but
an infinite game it's something that you play for the love of the game for it to
continue to iterate to expand that you want to perpetuate but to master yeah
that it's intimately a part of you as the game gets better that means feedback
loop naturally you've gotten better that's why you can't pin us down and say
you are dangerously making players all in on the cross it's like no we're
teaching an infinite game yes not a finite game we're teaching an infinite
game which does not end yeah skills to acquire mastery in all levels and then a
flourishing of the mind body and soul oh absolutely I mean God willing we can go
for a deeper yeah God willing when all of it comes together that will be an
absolute termite gnawing at a temple concept that that's just not even close
so yeah absolutely but hey you got anything do we ever do outro music
anymore we just said get after it all right yeah god bless you my friend we're
praying for you please pray for us get after it
