Hey everybody, and welcome to another episode of sports prep live. Sports prep live, where we unbox the bike and talk excellent in athletics.
Unknown Speaker 0:35
Welcome back to sports prep live. I'm your host, great and Prescott, today, today, today, today, we got a lot to talk about. There's a lot going on in sports, not only the basketball, but, you know, some football, collegiate sports. WNBA, we got a lot going on right now. So without further ado, we got me. We got KB, always great to have you good to be here. All right. Now, do you want to just rip the band aid off and go for something that I know we both want to talk about. WNBA, yes has been active, active so far in the off season, and we're not even too easy musical chairs. So seven head coaches so far have been fired. Correct? Seven? That would be the LA sparks, Washington mystics, Indiana Fever, Connecticut sun, yes, Chicago Sky, yes,
Unknown Speaker 1:23
I'm blanking on the last two. All right. Well, close enough, yeah,
Unknown Speaker 1:28
but I know for a fact it's seven. Yeah, the Las Vegas aces fired their general manager. They did. That's big. That's big. Changes are coming, yeah, and hopefully some changes that I talked about. Here's a question three weeks ago on this show, do you
Unknown Speaker 1:44
think that was deserved? Do you think that needed to happen based on what they did and did not achieve this this past
Unknown Speaker 1:51
I don't necessarily think that it was it needed to happen. I guess it makes sense. But if you're if you're speaking strictly from the perspective of a general manager you this year was, you're coming off of Back to Back championships, right? And the team last year was significantly better than the year before the first championship. They were a really good team. The second championship, they were the best team. Yes, they were the best team in league history. So they essentially kept the roster the same going into this year looking to three beat now we know now that didn't happen. They got beat in the second round by the New York Liberty, who went on to win the championship undeservedly. But that's another story for another day, right? But you know, from the perspective of a general manager, if you have a team that goes 34 and six, you bring the people back the next year, basically the same exact roster, minus Candace Parker, sure you did your job. So I don't think that the firing was unwarranted, because there are moves that they should have made in the during the regular season, yes, some trades that I think they needed to make, cutting the right people, but I don't think that it was necessarily needed, because it is the general manager who brought in Tiffany Hayes mid year, the sighting of the season. Absolutely,
Unknown Speaker 3:06
absolutely she can ball. So, you know,
Unknown Speaker 3:08
it can go either way. I would have waited one more year. I know what I
Unknown Speaker 3:13
think it has to do with. I think it has more to do with, I think there's some basketball decision making that went into this. But also we have to remember, there's a lawsuit going on. Yeah, that's true, and that lawsuit is a thorn in the side of the aces, and it does seem like something that did not have to happen. Now, I don't know if Natalie Williams was there. I believe she was when the decision, decision was made to get rid of de Erika Hamby, for the reasons that are being reported that they got rid of de Erika Hamby, which is that she became pregnant, right? She was going to have a baby in a league that is for and about and of women. I just don't think that that that passed the smell test, in terms of them saying, hey, it had nothing to do with that. She was hoping they had just won a championship. It was, it was gonna happen. In fact, as it as it ended up happening. You know, when she was having the baby, she wouldn't have really missed any basketball. And that's actually what ended up happening when she went out to Los Angeles, she didn't miss any basketball at all, and dericka was hoping right when she came back. So I think that may have a little bit to do with it, getting them in this kind of turmoil, which then did seep into basketball decisions. And maybe that's why Tiffany Hayes had to be brought in, although I'm glad she's here, yeah, yeah. It was a great signing, but they'd be better if they had Tiffany Hayes and Derek, Derek Amy, yeah. And now, as it were, now as it is, there's going to be some some player personnel decisions that have to be made as a consequence of all of this. So I don't know if you know, I don't know where I am on the firing, but I do believe that. But having made that decision, I don't think it's, you know, completely out of left field. I don't think it's unwarranted. Yeah, she got them if she's made, if she made those decision, and usually the GM does, she kind of got them in a pickle. Yeah,
Unknown Speaker 5:11
that's true. So, you know, I agree with you. I think it could go either way, depending on how you look at it. They are, you know, you know, situation with a lawsuit. But, you know, as the GM, she won back to back championships. So, you know, it could go either way. I don't really have an opinion on that one. I just think that, you know, they fired her. It was warranted. So, you know, I am neither here nor there with the ACES firing their general, right? I
Unknown Speaker 5:37
think where it's going to get interesting is, you know, when they do bring in a new GM. How's that? How's that going to impact player personnel, right? You know, we've already spoken on that a little bit, and there's some people that I think should be gone. I want
Unknown Speaker 5:50
to see what moves the whoever they bring in, sure, I want to see what moves
Unknown Speaker 5:53
they make, because moves do need Yes.
Unknown Speaker 5:57
You know, we're not the only one saying that. They're their head coach, Becky Hammond, she said, this roster will not
Unknown Speaker 6:03
look this isn't last year's League. This, this league looks entirely different than it did a year ago. Yes, it's much more competitive, right? So they do need to make some moves,
Unknown Speaker 6:12
and one of those moves that I suggested that they made was for Kelsey Mitchell. That's looking a lot less likely now. Yes, it is. If you don't know what I'm talking about. Here's what it is. Christy sides, head coach of the fever last year, was fired just a couple of days ago after two seasons, yep, just two seasons in the chair, one of which they got significantly better, not no thanks to her. That was thanks to the play of Caitlin Clark and Aaliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell. But she was fired. They went 20 and 20, and then they got swept in the first round. Made the playoffs for the first time in a long time, but got bounced in the first round. They did, they did, but I think that they could have been better than they were, even though I'm sure they outperformed expectations. Sure, my expectations for them going to the year into the year, and I'm going to own this last season I said that Caitlin Clark coming to that team met conference finals in the first year. Yeah,
Unknown Speaker 7:06
that's a big leap.
Unknown Speaker 7:07
I I know what I said. It was wrong. It was it ended up being incorrect. However, I do think that if there was a better coach, better personnel decisions in coaching, who you put on the floor at what time? Sure, sure. I think they could have at least gotten a game, maybe even took down Connecticut, and then who knows what happens in the second because they beat Connecticut this year, right? And who knows what happens in the second round with Minnesota? I don't think they would have beaten Minnesota. Minnesota, for my money. Minnesota is the best team in the league.
Unknown Speaker 7:37
Mafisa Collier is balling. Yeah, that's all I have to say, you've said that a lot on this, yes, yes, but
Unknown Speaker 7:43
the bottom line is, they the fever could have been better, and I think that Christy sides was holding them back a little bit. However, there was another coach fired significant over in Connecticut. Yes, Stephanie. But was it? Was it really a firing? No, it wasn't really a firing, because
Unknown Speaker 8:01
Stephanie White was, she had a successful season. Obviously, they wanted, they
Unknown Speaker 8:05
wanted to. She's had a successful career, yes, in Connecticut, and
Unknown Speaker 8:09
she was a baller herself. You know, she played. She's from Indiana, Hale's from Indiana, went to Purdue, played for the fever, was an assistant coach with this fever. And then I believe, for a couple of years, she was actually either the head or the interim head coach for the fever as well, before being, I believe, recruited to go over to Connecticut sun. So Christie sides is well respected, knows the area, knows Indiana basketball forwards and back, but they weren't going to get rid of her, right? Connecticut Sun had a really good season. And so I think what happened was because Stephanie White had made some public comments this past season, all alluring to the benefit of the fever, almost speaking, wanting about the fever, Connecticut General Manager and ownership might have been looking at her a little bit sideways, like, Yo, you need to talk about the Connecticut sun the way that you're talking about the Indiana Fever. So I don't think that she was going to get fired if she hadn't expressed maybe some interest in having the conversation with the teams that were pursuing her, which I believe it was Chicago Sky, of course, Connecticut sun for the resign, and then Indiana Fever, and she was willing to take those conversations with the Indiana Fever. I don't know how much there was interest in the Indiana the Chicago Sky, but the fever, I think there's a lot of mutual interest between that organization and Stephanie white, yeah, you're
Unknown Speaker 9:34
listening to sports prep live. I'm your man, great. And Prescott, we are discussing some very, very quick changes being made in the WNBA off season, and we got a lot more coming for you,
Unknown Speaker 9:44
so I have a question for you. Do you think going back to Christie sides and Stephanie white? Do you think that they brought her in because remember, Stephanie White was with the fever organization, and Kelsey Mitchell has been. There for a minute, right? Since she got signed, right? Do you think that maybe Christy getting pushed out has anything to do with the fact that Kelsey Mitchell said I'm going to explore my options, as opposed to just saying I'm going to resign with a fever. This is my home yada yada yada. She didn't say that. She said it's time for me to be selfish. And so I'm wondering if that relationship with Christie sides had something to do with Kelsey expressing some interest in being a little bit selfish, and if the potential relationship with Stephanie White has something to do with Stephanie white or Christie sides being pushed out the door.
Unknown Speaker 10:37
So obviously, I don't know Kelsey personally, but I would assume that she understood what a lot of people understood that is Christie sides wasn't the best coach for that team, okay, and as a player, arguably, you know, for my money, the second best player on that team, but some would argue She's still the best player on that team, and she's been there for a while, but they haven't had any success. Now she's put herself in a position with her individual play, where she can go anywhere that she wants, sure, sure. And she can be in a position where her team will be successful immediately. And some teams are going to want to write that conversation. So changes needed to be made. Yes, and for her, that could have been, you know, moving to another team. And it still could, yeah, there's a, you know, a chance she goes elsewhere. But I think that having a coach that was holding your organization back wouldn't help. So moving on from Christy sides and possibly bringing in Stephanie White, who was a better coach, more experienced, involved with the Indiana Fever, played there for a while. Sure, sure. I think that's going to be a much better fit for Kelsey Mitchell, and it will persuade her to stay.
Unknown Speaker 11:50
And I think Christy sides may have ruffled some feathers with the way that she handled or did not handle some of the some of the social media chatter that was going on surrounding Caitlin Clark and those basement dwellers who were saying all sorts of offensive things about the team, not only the teammates, but other you know, WNBA players, Christy sides, did not handle that well. She wasn't forceful. She didn't speak. Speak to it repeatedly. She didn't reject outright, and on multiple occasions, the inferences that were made by, you know, these, these nameless individuals who were all using Caitlin Clark as a as a proxy for, you know, let's, let's keep it a buck for their racism, you know, directed at players, not only in the WNBA and other teams, but also in the Indiana Fever organization. So I just don't think Christy handled that well. And I think that there is some there's a lingering bad taste in the mouth of several of those African American players on that team. Yeah, so it was going to be tough for her to hang on to her job anyway.
Unknown Speaker 12:51
So you know, her moving on, and Stephanie White has a reputation as someone who would yes she does. Yes she does. So I think, you know, if she comes to Indiana, that's a very positive thing for them. It's a positive thing for the possibility of Kelsey Mitchell staying, and I think it's a positive thing for the just the team as a whole, yeah, you know, the possibility of growth into a contending team in the next couple of years. So I think it makes sense. I think it's the best fit, yeah. Look for that to happen, yeah. And I think it will help Kelsey Mitchell's case to stay in Indiana, right? So, right? Definitely look for that to happen within the next couple of weeks. Yeah, they want to hang on to her great and Prescott here on Sports prep live, we have discussed some changes that have been made in the WNBA, and now we got to switch to the men's basketball. Okay? This is something that you brought up to me in the last couple of days, and I've had a little bit of time to dwell on it. You think there's some nepotism going on in the I think
Unknown Speaker 13:50
it's glaringly obvious. Let the people know, right? It's glaringly obvious from where he went in the draft to the demand by clutch rich Paul that no one else better draft him, basically, or he won't play for him. He'll go back to college if anybody else drafts Bronnie. Of course, we're talking about Ronnie James, through no fault of his own. But bronny, while he was at USC, averaged a point 5.5 points a game, five points. Okay, I thought that's that. That sounds like four points more than I thought it was like so, so he averaged, let's say it was five points a game. Yeah, you know, which is for a guy that is going to come out of the the the college experience year one, and then jump into the league that that's kind of subpar. And of course, you get picked up by the team. You know, make history. Want to play with your father. I do understand all that, and I'm not knocking brony for this. I'm not even knocking LeBron James for this, but the organization, the LA Lakers and a new coach capitulating to I don't know whether it was a demand or what have you. Yeah, but clearly this did not work out the way they thought it was going to, or maybe they even understood it would work out this way, but they just felt they had to go through the motions to to keep LeBron James happy. This is a bad look, it's and he's got to go in. And the guys in the the G League, those players, are no slouches, and they are hungry. There are some ballers in the G League. So from my and this is what I was talking about, the nepotism, from my vantage point, any other person with his basketball profile would not have gotten the opportunity that he got. And I don't know how fair that is, and I don't know how well that's going to wear with the NBA fan base. There's already a lot of chatter around this, and he was put in an impossible position, and so now he's being sent down to what is it, the South Bay Lakers, the name of their G league team. But it's not going to be easy for him there, either, and that's what I mean by the nepotism. And we see that a lot in sports, whether it's at the high school level, some some at the collegiate level, you know, usually not at the NBA level. But there is the the issue of, you know, kind of Austin rivers and Doc Rivers? Austin rivers got some who developed into a pretty good role
Unknown Speaker 16:13
player. No, Austin Rivers was the number one player in the country coming out of high school, if you say, in the NBA,
Unknown Speaker 16:19
Austin Rivers was subpar, and it took him a while to get traction that he Yeah, that he got he got opportunity after opportunity, but no other person without that name would have, would have received I
Unknown Speaker 16:31
disagree. I think it was because of how he performed in high school and college, because Austin Rivers was a he was a boiler. Yes, he was he went to Duke. He was cold. So I think that they knew it was there that he just needed a little bit of time to develop. A lot of time. That's that's the case with some players, that they need time to develop and break out. There
Unknown Speaker 16:50
are 400 players about in the NBA. There isn't usually any projects that don't show either immediate promise or we see in the next two or three years, we're going to be able to get a lot of production out of this particular individual, this particular player. That wasn't the case with Austin rivers, Shay
Unknown Speaker 17:09
gilgis Alexander was, but he's
Unknown Speaker 17:12
he was one of those examples of we can see what's coming.
Unknown Speaker 17:16
Shay was a eight ish points per game rookie in LA, and then got traded in his for before his second season, he got shipped off to Oklahoma City,
Unknown Speaker 17:26
okay, but I again, that trade, I think what he demonstrated is we can see what's coming. And that's the question that I would have you know, for you know, the brawny supporters, is, can we see? Do we have any indication as to what's coming? I
Unknown Speaker 17:44
think Ronnie can end up being a Dave on Mitchell type of guy. I
Unknown Speaker 17:47
think it's going to be tough for Bronnie to be successful in this league.
Unknown Speaker 17:51
I think he has potential to be a player similar to Dave on Mitchell, if you just put their game side by side. Brony is not the greatest shooter, so he's got to work on that. But he's a pretty good defender. He's athletic.
Unknown Speaker 18:07
Um, Dave Young, Mitchell, as an off night. Yes, that Dave, that Dave on MIT he doesn't play defense like that, like, come on, yeah,
Unknown Speaker 18:12
but he's 1920 he's got, he's got time to develop. Dave Young is what, maybe 22 No. Dave on played a few, a couple years. Dave beyond is 25 Yeah, you're right. He was in college longer. He
Unknown Speaker 18:24
didn't do the one year thing. Yeah, Dave, Dave Young's 20 Baylor, right, right.
Unknown Speaker 18:28
Dave on Mitchell's 2520 Dave on Mitchell's 26 years.
Unknown Speaker 18:32
Okay, I take that back. I take but as long as I've known about him, he's been off night like I don't even know, yeah, but
Unknown Speaker 18:39
you didn't know about him till senior year in college, where he's 2223 that's a good point. So that's a good point. Let bronny get to 23 and then we can see if he's playing defense like that, because defense can keep you on the floor. Yeah, I think that's, I think that it hasn't kept him on the floor. Brony, yes, he's three games into his four games into his NBA career. Yeah. But what
Unknown Speaker 18:58
again, I it didn't keep him on the floor at USC, okay, let's, let's, I will grant you, all right, five points a game.
Unknown Speaker 19:04
But think about, think about his time at USC. That was a season. His freshman season, he's fresh off a cardiac arrest. Correct? He died and then was revived. So, you know, he comes back midway through the season. I said nepotism. He comes back midway through the season. Yes, he has a great showing at the draft combine, which boosted his draft projections. He had a good showing at the Combine game. His physicals were off the charts. He looked like a prospect worth taking a risk, and it's not even a risk when it's a defense. Overall, he
Unknown Speaker 19:36
had a great combine, didn't he only work out for one or two teams. That's
Unknown Speaker 19:40
not what the combine is. The Combine is the recruit. Oh, come in. Yeah, that's not teamwork, correct, correct. He had a good showing at the combine. Okay, we're kids from all over come in, right? They're wearing, they're wearing NBA jerseys. His number was 55 Alex SAR was there, who ended up being the second pick. Reed Shepard was there, third. He
Unknown Speaker 20:00
had a great combine, but he went 56th in the draft, so
Unknown Speaker 20:03
when he was projected undrafted, anyways, his combine boosted him up to the late second round. That can happen. He's not every player can be a first round pick. Not everybody can be a first No, but there's 30 of them. Okay, there's how many people trying out for the draft every
Unknown Speaker 20:19
year. So
Unknown Speaker 20:20
I'm not willing to say he had a great combine. Maybe he had a solid combine. He
Unknown Speaker 20:24
had for a guy who's projected to go undrafted, he had a good showing, a very strong showing. Again. By
Unknown Speaker 20:31
this isn't even a knock on Bronnie. This is to the Lakers, what are you doing? And we know what you're doing, and we know why right now, like it what they need to be focused on, focusing on is West Side connect, that that's where their attention needs to be, because they hate that kid. He's
Unknown Speaker 20:47
incredible on the roster. He was their first round pick. That kid is incredible. Yeah, he's there. He's playing, I understand. And the Lakers are off to a great start. Yes, they are best starting 13 years. Yes they are. So I'm, you know, people know I'm Lakers fan. I'm,
Unknown Speaker 21:03
I'm happy. I'm going to keep my eye on this situation at I South Bay.
Unknown Speaker 21:07
I think JJ Redick is a really good coach. I really do. I like what I see out of them. He's smart. He's got them, he's got them running off and very smart. You know, Darvin Ham had them saying salute to each other in timeouts, but not doing anything on the floor. JJ Reddick has got these guys playing basketball, moving the ball high, pick and roll, spread offense, like JJ Reddick has got them playing basketball, whereas Darvin Ham had them just running around with the ball, you know, saying, okay, LeBron, go put it. It seems like
Unknown Speaker 21:33
there was a little bit more discipline. Now we're only three games in, but it does seem like there's a little bit more discipline. Yeah, at the Lakers,
Unknown Speaker 21:38
the great impressed out here on Sports prep live. We just discussed some possible nepotism going on over there in the Los Angeles Lakers. We've also discussed probable that's just We've also discussed a lot going on in the WNBA, and some changes that have been made, one of which was with the Las Vegas aces. Another event happened in Las Vegas, UNLV football, and we don't noisy state. We don't have to dwell on this. They lost the game by five. I didn't think they played as well as they could have. They had a chance to win the game and
Unknown Speaker 22:12
still had a chance to win the game.
Unknown Speaker 22:14
I Yeah, you know,
Unknown Speaker 22:15
I'm this squad is for real. I'm okay with that. UNLV is for real. I am too. They're,
Unknown Speaker 22:19
they're going to be in a bowl game, UNLV, that is, you know, Boise State. They might make the college football playoff. UNLV will be in a bowl game, and I'm very confident that they can win one. They had a,
Unknown Speaker 22:32
you know, Hodge, Malik Williams, had an okay game, and almost beat the number 17th rank team in the country. Yeah, like he is, and we've said it before, he's impressive. He's impressive. His okay game almost delivered you a knockout of the 17th ranked team in the country, right? And I really thought they were going to win it, because they seem like they kind of had control for most of the game. It was a really good game. I don't think anybody was really disappointed with the outcome, just because of the heart, just because of the effort that they put in. You know, we haven't had this in UNLV football in a generation, so I think everybody was pumped, you know, coming out of the game, just because of how well they did in a game with a really worthy opponent. And I think you said Boise State lost to Oregon, Oregon by three. So that's an impressive football team. Yeah, so UNLV has no reason to hang their head. It was an outstanding game. Again, you know, Hodge Malik shout out to him. He's a great football player, great quarterback. Had an okay game. I don't think he'd be as thrilled with that as some of his other performances, but that's how good he is, that he could have a game where maybe he felt like, Okay, I was able to put together maybe 75% and only lost by five points. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 23:43
One more thing going on in Vegas before we wrap this up in a couple of weeks. Number one ranked in the basketball for college Kansas is gonna play Duke. We've
Unknown Speaker 23:54
talked about this kid a lot.
Unknown Speaker 23:56
Cooper flag man, number one player in the country, ladies and gentlemen, he is 17. Yeah, he's 17 years old. He won't be 18 until December. He should be in high school. Yeah, he should, he should be in a senior year. Duke and Kansas, in Las Vegas, in a couple of T Mobile Yep, AT T Mobile arena. I got Duke. I'm gonna just go ahead and say it. I got Duke.
Unknown Speaker 24:20
You know, there are elements of this that should be a debate show, but I find it hard. I find
Unknown Speaker 24:26
it hard one. Kansas is number one in the country. I got Duke.
Unknown Speaker 24:29
They are number one in the country. But this kid, Cooper flag is for real.
Unknown Speaker 24:35
I think he's the second best, or like second most dominant possible freshman recruit they've had in the last 10 to 12 years.
Unknown Speaker 24:43
Never, never mind Duke. He is one of the more dominant players coming out of high school that basketball has had in a generation or two. I saw a graphic today. Zion was cold. I saw his upside in my Zion. On what's called Don't do that. His upside is
Unknown Speaker 25:02
so much more than Zion. Zion was given Duke 22 and 10. Zion needs to stay off of hamburgers like Duke. He was the real deal. He was and then, and he's doing okay in the NBA now. He started chomping and chomping and chomping. That's another has been eating too. We're not talking about him in the NBA. We're talking about him as a recruit. But
Unknown Speaker 25:21
here I'll tell you this the graphic that I saw today. The names that were on that list were Kobe, Bryant, LeBron, James Tracy, McGrady, like these. These are all time greats coming out of high school. Yeah. So I don't say that to get in a debate about how well or you know, not how good or not good that Zion was. I know you're a Zion Williamson fan. To me, I just don't,
Unknown Speaker 25:50
I wouldn't consider myself a fan. I'm just not going to hate on him because of the injuries he's had. You know why? Yeah, I'll
Unknown Speaker 25:56
be a hater. You know why? I
Unknown Speaker 25:57
hate on Zion because he's got small hands.
Unknown Speaker 25:59
He does have small hands, but that's not the reason the lack of discipline. Put down the hamburgers. Stay away from McDonald's, like you've been paid a lot of money. Can you stay on the floor? Again? We're
Unknown Speaker 26:12
talking about him at Duke. Just his time at Duke. Well, okay, but now,
Unknown Speaker 26:16
what did he do at Duke? Did they get a championship? Ones iron ones there. They
Unknown Speaker 26:19
got to the elite. Did
Unknown Speaker 26:20
they get a championship?
Unknown Speaker 26:22
How many teams have gotten a championship since Zion was at Duke? How many teams? How many Duke teams? Okay, so one of the best players in the NBA right now. So
Unknown Speaker 26:29
your answer is no. So two days ago, Paulo mon Carol, ladies and gentlemen, 13 ladies and gentlemen, this is called deflection. His answer is no, they did not win a championship when Duke was do you think Paulo bond carro undisciplined? I wasn't talking about Paulo buen carro. I'm talking about Zion Williams. Okay, then let's talk about Paulo now versus Uh huh, the upside of Cooper flag. Duke isn't guaranteed to win a championship. I don't think it's close. Duke is not guaranteed to come in here and win a champion. They are not guaranteed to win a championship. They're going to go farther than the Elite Eight. I guarantee you that that
Unknown Speaker 27:01
that is much easier said than done. And you know, it correct. It
Unknown Speaker 27:05
is easier said than done. But I'm, you heard it here? What is today? October 29 2024 season three. I'm putting it out there. They are going to go much further. So I'm, this is Final Four, or championship game. I believe in this kid, I think Rutgers can beat them. Cooper Fleck, I think Rutgers can beat Rutgers is tough.
