Like a master surveyor, Jesus gives us clear directions to find a fulfilling, purpose-filled relationship with Himself - a map to the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Charted is a daily devotional written by the junior class at Fountainview Academy (Class of 2019). Based on the book Steps to Christ, this book explores the path to the Originator and Provider of Genuine Joy. We don't have to be confused about the way. The certainty is in the journey: divinely Charted.
Without unceasing prayer and diligent watching we are in danger of
growing careless and of deviating from the right path. The adversary
seeks continually to obstruct the way to the mercy seat, that we may
not by earnest supplication and faith obtain grace and power to resist
temptation. – Steps to Christ, pg. 95
“Boys! Don’t go outside; there’s a bear out there,” Mom
hollered from the kitchen. Unable to resist the temptation, as soon
as my mom had turned back to her cooking, my brothers and I
sprinted for the bush. After thinking up a plan of attack, we got to work
sharpening sticks. Soon everything was ready.
“Three, two, one, attack!”
We rushed towards the unsuspecting bear. The bear, happily
turning from its berry meal, beheld a most terrifying sight: three little
boys charging with the vengeance of berserkers. Fear tore through its
eyes, and the poor bear’s legs couldn’t carry it away fast enough.
Feeling like proud Viking warriors, we triumphantly marched
back to our house. Later that night after relating our victorious crusade
to our dad, we learned a lesson that will stick with us for the rest of our
lives: No matter how big and tough we think we are, it is never a good
idea to chase things that can hurt us, no matter how fun it may seem.
Although none of us was harmed, it would have been wise to follow
the advice of my mother.
Often, I don’t see the many possible dangers in my physical
and spiritual life. I need the guidance of Someone who is able to see
the dangers, protect me from myself, and guide me in His straight and
narrow path. If I trust Jesus (like I should have trusted my mom), and
follow His advice, I will be safe.
