It’s clear. Americans are itchy to get out and do things. Phase One of the pandemic was about goods. Phase Two is about services. Sporting events. Restaurants. Theme parks. Travel. Companies ranging from Marriot to Expedia agree. Some in the industry are calling it revenge travel—something we saw last summer before cases picked back up.
At Disney, revenue from domestic parks have doubled year-over-year. Guests are spending as much as 40% more per capita than 2019. As mask requirements and vaccination mandates fade, we could see an active summer. In fact, insiders feel airlines have a shot at pre-pandemic passenger levels by July or August.
The headscratcher is all this potential spending in the face of high inflation. Will a March Fed rate increase spoil the party? Americans seem undeterred. We’ll be watching.
