You only have to live one version of today, not every version your mind imagines.

What is Lighter than You Started?

Lighter Than You Started is a daily podcast offering gentle reflections on the news, the noise, and the small human moments that shape our days. With wry humour and quiet honesty, it’s not about fixing you, just about ending each day feeling a little lighter than when it began.

Keith:

Hi I'm Keith and welcome to Lighter Than You Started. It's Wednesday and by the middle of the week our minds can become surprisingly busy. Not just with what's happening but with everything that could happen. This could go well or it could go badly. They might say yes or they might say no.

Keith:

This meeting might lead somewhere or perhaps it won't. The mind has an incredible ability to imagine possibilities. It's one of the reasons we can plan, create, prepare, solve problems. It's a remarkable gift but sometimes that gift becomes a burden because instead of considering one possibility we begin carrying all of them. Every outcome.

Keith:

Every scenario. Every version of what tomorrow might bring. It's almost as though we believe that if we think about every possible future we'll be ready for whichever one arrives. There's something very understandable about that. The unknown feels uncomfortable so the mind tries to make it smaller by exploring every path.

Keith:

But have you ever noticed how exhausting that can become? You begin with one simple decision. Within minutes you've imagined six different outcomes. Three conversations that haven't happened. Two problems that don't yet exist and one situation that probably never will.

Keith:

Meanwhile the decision itself is still sitting quietly in front of you. Wednesday often has this feeling. The week is unfolding. Some things are becoming clearer. Others remain uncertain and because there are still unknowns the mind starts multiplying possibilities trying to cover every angle trying to stay one step ahead.

Keith:

But perhaps you were never meant to carry every possibility. Perhaps you only need to carry reality as it arrives. Think about your own life. How many things have you worried about that never happened? How many conversations turned out completely differently from how you imagined?

Keith:

How many opportunities arrived that you never saw coming? Life has a wonderful habit of surprising us in both directions. Which means all that energy we spend carrying imaginary futures often has nowhere to go. You don't need to prepare for every possible version of tomorrow. You don't need to mentally carry every route your life could take.

Keith:

You don't need to solve problems that only exist in your imagination. You only need to meet the path that actually unfolds beneath your feet. There's something deeply peaceful about that because it reminds us that life has experienced one reality at a time not every possibility at once. So today you notice your mind creating another list of what ifs. Perhaps gently pause.

Keith:

Take a breath and remind yourself. I only have to live one version of today. Not all the others my mind has imagined. Today's talk for you. You don't need to carry every possibility.

Keith:

Thank you for sharing this moment with me and as always I hope you end today feeling lighter than you started. Go gently and I'll see you tomorrow or on the flip side.
