Samiam – Lights Out Little Hustler

Smashing Pumpkins – Spellbinding

Empire State Bastard – Harvest
After instantly selling out next week’s intimate shows without even releasing a single
song, today Empire State Bastard have officially revealed what they’re all about with
intense debut single Harvest.
The crushing new side-project from Biffy Clyro’s Simon Neil and Mike Vennart
features the mighty Dave Lombardo on drums, and is an incredibly exciting taste of
what else is to come from the band. “Empires fall, States rise, Bastards sing…” they
tease. “It’s Harvest time motherfuckers!”

The Beths – Watching the Credits
Just a few months after sharing their great album Expert in a Dying Field, The
Beths are back with another new song called “Watching the Credits.” Along with the
single, the Kiwi indie rockers have expanded their already-stacked 2023 tour, as well
as released their NPR Tiny Desk Concert.
Recorded during the Expert in a Dying Field sessions, “Watching the Credits” was
inspired by The Beths vocalist and songwriter Elizabeth Stokes’ own peculiar hobby
of learning everything she can about a movie without actually watching the movie. In
typical Beths fashion, it’s built from punchy and energetic guitar riffs that backdrop
Stokes’ sharp lyrics: “I spend all night/ Cutting up edits/ Watching the credits to find

direction/ In my existence,” she sings over sweeping harmonies, turning the idea of
“main character energy” into something much more bleak.
During their visit to the Tiny Desk, The Beths — equipped with a clarinet and a
teeny-tiny xylophone — performed newer highlights “Expert in a Dying Field” and
“When You Know You Know,” as well as “Jump Rope Gazers” and “Out of Sight”
from their 2020 album.

Boygenius – True Blue
The record is out this week. After a string of high quality singles, this looks like it’ll be
well worth the wait. Stereogum writes in their premature evaluation:
The songs on the record all sound big, even when they’re small. There are twinkling
headrush rockers like “Not Strong Enough.” There are soft, skeletal ruminations like
“Revolution 0.” There are out-and-out rockers like “Satanist.” The songs cohere, just
like the voices do. The members of boygenius wrote these songs and constructed
this album together, and they avoided the trap of making it sound like art by
committee. There’s no one dominant voice on the record. Instead, the three
members of boygenius found ways to mesh at album length. Every song on the
record might not knock you on your ass, but the cumulative effect is really
something.

Crawlers – That Time of Year Always
Crawlers have just unveiled their first new single of 2023 (and they’ve also timed its
release to mark the beginning of spring).
Says vocalist Holly Minto of the poignant, reflective new song, “That Time Of Year
Always encompasses the feeling of envying your younger self before the trauma hits
in your early 20s. It’s about missing the ignorance that you had in your childhood;
that reflection process which usually happens for me during the winter seasons.
“Being older, you realise that despite thinking these thoughts stem from seasonal
depression, it’s normal to feel that longing for your youth all year round, and to
constantly have your younger self in mind when reminiscing about what once was.”

Linkin Park – Fighting Myself
Linkin Park’s sophomore album, Meteora, celebrates its 20th anniversary on
Saturday (March 25). In honor of the milestone, the band is gearing up to release
a 20th anniversary deluxe reissue of the multiplatinum effort. Now, Linkin Park have
debuted a second previously unreleased song from those sessions, “Fighting
Myself.”

“Fighting Myself” follows “Lost,” which the band released in February. While “Lost”
highlights the late Chester Bennington’s melodic vocals, “Fighting Myself” sees Mike
Shinoda rapping the verses and Bennington coming in on the chorus to plead,
“Fighting myself, I always lose.”
“Lost” recently went to No. 1 on the rock and alternative radio charts. Time will tell if
“Fighting Myself” sees the same trajectory.
The 20th anniversary reissue of Meteora will hit stores on April 7 in a variety of
packages, including a limited-edition super deluxe box set, a vinyl box set, a deluxe
3-CD version, and as a digital download.

Samiam – Lights Out Little Hustler

Samiam’s first album in 12 years, Stowaway, is out this week. The band’s 9 th overall
is looking to be one of their best, judging from the early singles. This song was
released last year and features guest vocals from Chris Wollard of Hot Water Music.

Smashing Pumpkins – Spellbinding
The Smashing Pumpkins have been rolling out their new rock opera album ATUM in
three acts. The first act came out in November, the second in January, and they’ve
just announced that the third and final part of the album will be released on May 5.
Today, they’ve shared the previously unreleased “Spellbinding” from that last act
of ATUM.
The band has also announced the North American leg of their The World Is A
Vampire Tour, which kicked off in Mexico earlier this month and will head to Australia
in April. The NA tour dates will start in Las Vegas this summer. Smashing Pumpkins
will spend the first half of the tour with Stone Temple Pilots, and then they’ll be joined
by Interpol for the second half.
“I grew up in a world where I needed to know bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees
and The Cure existed, it meant there was a place for people like me to hang out and
belong,” Billy Corgan said of the tour in a statement. “That’s what The World Is A
Vampire is about. Bringing back that sense of community. If you don’t fit in, you
belong here. It’s about having a shared experience and respecting others, but
ultimately having fun. A true alternative festival, where all the self-proclaimed
weirdos and outsiders of the world can get together and have a party.”

Gel – Honed Blade
Debut full length (well, kind of, it’s only 16 minutes long) Only Constant is out this
week. Gel is a hardcore band from New Jersey that, alongside fellow up and comers
Soul Glo and Scowl, can attribute their popularity in part to Turnstile’s Glow On
breaking through into the mainstream in 2021. The Convulse records release reads:
You already know what this is. Hardcore for the freaks by the freaks. The culmination
of Gel's world takeover- a debut LP following up the Violent Closure 7" and last
year's Shock Therapy split 12" with Cold Brats. Hardcore punk music dripping with
equal parts effect and authenticity. An exercise in groove and aggression that
continues to be undeniable and anthemic. Welcome to the new era of hardcore punk
- the freaks have inherited the earth.

Gord Downie and Bob Rock – Greyboy Says
Prominent producer Bob Rock (Metallica, Motley Crüe, The Offspring) and Gord
Downie , the late frontman of The Tragically Hip, have released “Greyboy Says,” the
latest preview of their upcoming album, Lustre Parfait (May 5 th ).
Downie worked with the producer for over a decade to create Lustre Parfait. Serving
as the opening track of the album, “Greyboy Says” was inspired by the work of Led
Zeppelin, Bo Diddley, David Bowie, and more.
After Downie’s passing, Rock retained the original vocals and tempo of the song
while rearranging the instrumental aspects. “The track that Gord wrote the song to is
not what you hear today,” Rock tells Consequence. “There was an uneasy feeling I
had after hearing the melody and lyrics that Gord came up with which made me think
that the music was not right, so I kept his vocal and a basic tempo map.”
The single harkens back to the glam rock of the ’80s with slick electric guitar and
bombastic energy. Downie’s rousing vocals easily shift from a light falsetto to a
hearty chest voice, while still retaining power with each change. Striking percussion
centers the spirited track as Downie sings, “Whether laughter, sorrow, anger, tears/
You can do it and if you can’t, I’m here.”

Cable Ties – Time For You
Earlier this year, Australian rock band Cable Ties released a one-off “Perfect Client.”
Now we know that track is set to appear on a brand-new Cable Ties album, All Her
Plans, which follows up 2020’s Far Enough. All Her Plans will arrive later in June via
Merge, and a press release describes it as “the band’s fiery statement of renewed
purpose, a beacon of furious truth, righteous frustration and tender empathy.”
Accompanying the album news is a lead single and video, “Time For You.”

“‘Time For You’ is about feeling safe and happy with someone,” says singer Jenny
McKechnie. “I’m a pretty chaotic and anxious person and I always feel like I’m barely
holding everything together and never have enough time for everything I’ve planned.
When I come home to my partner James, I feel safe, happy and like everything is
going to be ok. It’s like our time together sits outside of the timeline of the rest of my
life.”

Lockstep – Weave
Nashville's Lockstep make doomy, heavy shoegaze in the vein of bands like
Cloakroom and Jesu, and they're gearing up to release their debut EP Arrival on May
19. It's their first proper release, following a two-song single from 2021. The EP was
self-produced, with guitarist Matt Schumacher handling tracking and mixing, and the
first single is "Weave." It's a track that's as heavy as it is atmospheric and beautiful,
and the band says, "'Weave' is loosely about wrestling with a shifting negative
mindset. Writing Weave helped us identify sonically what we wanted the next
chapter of the band to be."

DEVO – Beautiful World
Devo are planning to release their first authorized documentary that covers the band's full
history. The film will be composed of new interviews and archival footage. It's
called Devo and will be directed by Chris Smith (American Movie, Fyre, Tiger King). BMG,
Fremantle Documentaries, and Warner Music Entertainment are the executive producers.
Smith issued a statement, “Devo was a huge influence on me. Their approach to music,
film, video, and art was something I had never seen before and was one of the truly
formative artistic influences that showed me there were entirely new ways to look at things.”
