The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

As broadcast April 12, 2023 and served with lots of nasi goreng to go around.  Tonight sees us take off for Jakarta to check out a sneaky good country in the music game:  Indonesia.  From the late 60's to now, the massive archipelago and the world's most populous Muslim nation has been making its mark in modern tunes, and we tried to cover as much as we could for the full two hours with highlights from Shark Move, Jirapah, Vira Talisa, and many others from all over the chronology.  After flying back to ICN, we checked a couple of tunes from one of our favorites in OOHYO to get us back home.

I.
It is 20 hours past midnight after a sunny but rather brisk day here Gwangju, and it is once again time to take off with The Drop tonight as it is Wednesday. And this evening’s script is in English but there’s plenty of Bahasa Indonesia and Javanese in there as well, duly mispronounced later on, I am sure. This is Danno of course as it is each & every night from studio 2, GFN HQ in Downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Tonight we fly to Indonesia’s capital of Jakarta for a bit of a city night drive in part 1, then explore some of the more chilled vibes of the many islands that constitute the world’s most populous Muslim nation after that in part 2 as well. Indonesia is kind of a sly deadly player in music over the years, not crazy famous in the world, but there’s some amazing music for all of us to explore tonight from all over the chronology. As we take off though, it is one of my all-time favorite travel tunes as we show you the way to go. This is The Drop.

The Jacksons – Show You The Way To Go

The Drop has officially kicked off our Bahasa Indonesia show tonight on this Round Trip Wednesday. What’s up, Drop Gangsters (Korean)? Danno bossin the mic but not around from here in studio 2, GFN HQ, downtown Gwangju and we just landed in funky Jakarta on this evening’s round trip as flight TD090 has touched down.
Just started the show tonight with our TIGHT (or) feature, that was The Jacksons, previously The Jackson 5 with Let Me Show You The Way To Go. Not a date-specific history feature, mind you, just a tune that I love and an era in the story of the brothers from Gary, IN who for this album had finally been freed from the clutches of Motown. That’s off the band’s self-titled debut on Epic from 1976, a killer record to check out if you wanna get some old school vibes there are some bangers on there.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast details, etc.
Now, we just got the rental car and we’re about to get into some Jakarta night drive type of tracks here in the next block, and we have some classic stuff from Elfa’s Singers, Chrisye & Fariz RM in the next block for that Bahasa flavor, and this is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday night to Indonesia.
_________

Back on The Drop and taking a night drive after touching down in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta for this week’s Round Trip. Presently, we’re getting into some city pop night drive vibes in the rental and turning it way up. But we gotta pull over for a sec and check the nav, so let’s get to the recap in the process of that...
Elfa’s Singers – Prahara Cinta (…this band was formed by the leading lady Elfa Secioria all the way back in 1978 & they are still going today. Prahara Cinta which means Tempest Love dropped in 1988, and the group is one of the most awarded and prestigious in the country, still going strong after 4 decades.)
Chrisye – Cintaku (…a classic from 1977 right here which means My Love. Known for his stiff stage persona and smooth vocals, Chrisye was critically acclaimed in Indonesia. Five albums to which he contributed were included in Rolling Stone Indonesia's list of the 150 Best Indonesian Albums of All Time; another four of his songs (and a fifth to which he contributed) were classified as some of the best Indonesian songs of all time in a later issue of the same magazine, he was also named by Rolling Stone as the 3rd greatest performer of all time in Indonesia, may he rest in power.)
Fariz RM – Selangkah Ke Seberang (…this tune’s title means I serve Selangkah, although I dunno who that might be or have been. This song along with 5 others by the artist were cited as amongst the best Indonesian songs of all time by Rolling Stone, with this tune seeing release in 1980. Interestingly, he says he prefers small shows, as once he saw a massive traffic jam after a large concert he did, which he said caused him great grief and guilt.)
Moving along to the end of the first quarter, we’ll get a wicked indie acts in prior to the jump, and up next is a band called Heals with a tune called False Alarm and we’ll wrap part 1 with Oslo Ibrahim and a cut called Someone That Can’t Be Mine. We obviously have plenty plenty plenty more in store in parts 2, 3, & 4, so keep bumpin with us. THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday night to Indonesia.
Heals – False Alarm
Oslo Ibrahim – Someone That Can’t Be Mine

II.
The Drop with Danno is back still in Jakarta for this week’s Round Trip. We just got a bit more tradish but still indie as far as the local sound goes right there, so let’s get at the liner notes on those two gauzy Indonesian indie lovers…
White Shoes & Couples Company – Kisa Dari Selatan Jakarta (…a lovely rendition performed by the rising Jakarta indie folk band right here. The title means Tales from South Jakarta, and is a favorite amongst the young people of Indonesia since release in 2010 on the Album Vakansi or Album Vacation.)
Skastra – Hilang Asa (…a little reggae & dub flavor on this one from 2017. The title means Lost Hope, and the band is a seemingly ever-expanding octet that have been cited as one to watch on the indie scene there. Naturally, apologies to any Javanese or Bahasa speakers out there tonight, I know this is murder on the pronunciation.)

Moving along SM, #9870, podcast let us know …
Up next we’ll get a few more classics but also finish with a contemporary joint to rattle the radio cage. Up ahead we got Dato’ Sheila Majid & D. Lloyd…then we’ll finish with Marion Jola, all of which we’ll discuss further no matter where on the timeline we might happen to land as it is a bit of time warp we’re getting into here on this triad. THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday to Jakarta.
_________
The Drop continues along on our Jakarta night time adventures for this evening’s Round Trip adventure. Danno here, studio 2, GFN HQ. For right now, let’s summarize those last three joints we just had bounce you around the timeline, then we’ll finish with drawing another triangle in the sky before we head to the 2nd half…
Dato’ Sheila Majid – Dia (…this tune is admittedly by The “Malaysian Queen of Jazz,” but she kept popping up on Indonesian playlists so much & she’s so popular next door in Indonesia that we just had to throw her on. This tune was released in 1989.)
D. Lloyd – Kr. Gelisah (…not sure what the Kr appellage means if it’s doctor or what, but this tune was put out in 1970. The group is a famed presence in Indonesian popular music, having formed in 1967 and only hanging it up in 2017 after a full 50 years in the game.)
Marion Jola feat Danilla & Ramengvrl – Don’t Touch Me (…this is a great indie team-up right here with three of the best indie female singers out there. A defiant mix of rock & hip-hop flavors, perfect for the Me Too era we all inhabit now.)
Okay, so the last remnants of the line have disappeared behind the ticket counter and I didn’t hear final call specifically, but it’s making me a tad nervous, so I’m gonna run over to the plane. Up next we have another pair of indie up-and-comers out of Indonesia and first we have a band called Jirapah with a tune called Matahari, and we’ll close the half with Bedchamber and a cut called Natural. THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesdays, and we are at halftime.
Jirapah – Matahari
Bedchamber - Natural

III & IV Round Trip
White Shoes & The Couples Company - Senandung Maaf
Naif – Jikalau
Vira Talisa – Walking Back Home
Vira Talisa - If I See You Tomorrow
Rafika Duri - Dilanda Cinta
Danilla – Junko Furuta
Thee Marloes – Nanti

White Shoes & The Couples Company - Senandung Maaf
- A tune meaning, hmmmm…sorry, this band put out this tune on their self-titled debut back in 2005.
- Interestingly, the group was signed to Minty Fresh in the US after release, with this LP getting re-issue in America in 2007.
Naif – Jikalau
- A very influential band that formed in the mid-1990’s, a bit of a trail blazer in the rock scene that is very vibrant there now.
- This tune’s title means “if,” and a couple of their tunes have been cited by Rolling Stone as a couple of the greatest Bahasa tunes of all time.
- The group broke up in 2021, after reaching exactly 25 years in music.
Vira Talisa – Walking Back Home
Vira Talisa - If I See You Tomorrow
- A couple of contemporary tunes very much on the vintage track. Vira Talisa graduated from university in France and has since been nominated multiple times for Indonesia’s highest awards in music, the AMI.
- Both of these tunes appear on Talisa’s only album to date, titled Primavera and released in 2019.
Rafika Duri - Dilanda Cinta
- The titlular tune off an album from 1989, meaning The Search for Love.
- Known simply as Fika by most, the artist now 63 has had an amazing award-winning career that has spanned many decades, having made a smashing debut in the late 1970’s
Danilla – Junko Furuta
- This is the moniker of Danilla Riyadi, and is a tune off the artist’s 2014 album Telisik, or search.
- Danilla is a very talented singer & actress, with this album being named as Rolling Stone Indonesia’s best new act for 2014.
Thee Marloes – Nanti
- This is a new signing to Big Crown Records in NYC, although this is a tune that was released back in 2020.
- The group is a trio out of Surabaya, and we’ll save the new stuff for tomorrow night’s funk & soul sesh, just so you’re forewarned.

Bedchamber – Perennial
Elephant Kind - I Believe In You
Shark Move – Bingung
Jirapah – Planetarium
Oohyo – Teddy Bear Rises
OOHYO - Butter Chicken

Bedchamber – Perennial
- This is a band out of the Indonesian capital Jakarta who made their debut in 2013, and this would be the title track to their 2014 EP.
- The band has four members and what I definitely like is their bio, which reads simply, “The band that works.”
Elephant Kind - I Believe In You
- Staying in the same chronological neighborhood, this is a band founded in 2014.
- I Believe in You is off an album from 2019 called cheekily, The Greatest Ever, if you wanna go digging for more. The band definitely dug for more, eventually moving to London to further their ambitions.
Shark Move – Bingung
- Going way back for this next one, which is from 1971. The title of this tune means confused.
- Shark Move was the first band in the country to combine traditional sounds with psychedelic and progressive rock. This is a band to check out if you’re not familiar, and this tune is off their Ghede Chokra’s LP, their only album as the keyboardist had passed away in late 1970.
Jirapah – Planetarium
- This is a veteran band originally out of Jakarta who actually formed in an NYC apartment back in the mid-augts.
- This standalone single came much later though, with release coming in 2019.
OOHYO – Teddy Bear Rises
OOHYO – Butter Chicken
- A very talented person right here, responsible for 2 EP’s and 2 albums in her career.
- True name Woo Hyo-eun, she was mainly raised abroad and attended university in London. Just one of our favorite artists, a well-known songwriter for other groups as well, having composed a song for NewJeans amongst other notables.
