The Justice Department has reached a settlement with Paul Vaughn, a Christian father of eleven who was arrested in a predawn FBI raid at his Tennessee home over pro-life activism. Vaughn was indicted in October 2022 under the Biden administration for allegedly violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act by blocking the entrance of the Carafem Health Center in Mt. Juliet in March 2021. He avoided prison but received three years of supervised release in 2024, before President Trump pardoned him alongside nearly two dozen other pro-life activists. Thomas More Society Senior Counsel Steve Crampton said, "Paul prayed and sang... and for that, the full weight of the federal government was brought crashing down on his front door before the sun rose." Vaughn called it "a traumatic ordeal that never should have happened."

President Donald Trump used the rescheduled White House Correspondents' Association dinner Friday night to take aim at Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico. Speaking at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington — a smaller venue chosen after an April assassination attempt derailed the original event at the Washington Hilton — Trump said, "In Texas, the Democrats are running a candidate named James 'Talafreako,' who hates guns, hates oil, hates sex, hates women, and says he is a 'Christian who hates Christianity.'" He added, "Other than that, I think his platform is quite good," and likened Talarico to Mad magazine mascot Alfred E. Neuman while predicting a win for Attorney General Ken Paxton. Talarico, a Presbyterian Church USA member and seminary student, used that phrase in a 2021 podcast. His campaign is now selling "I'm a Talafreako" T-shirts.

Tennessee pastor Greg Locke says his once-booming tent church has shrunk dramatically amid a federal investigation into alleged misappropriation of church funds. In a reflective Facebook post, the Global Vision Bible Church leader in Lebanon recalled a time when the tent "shook with three thousand voices," but said, "We are pastoring a few hundred truly dedicated people now. Three hundred. Maybe four hundred on a strong Sunday." He listed lawsuits, closed bank accounts, vandalism, death threats, a "terrifying house raid," and the death of his son, yet insists he feels "more free than I have ever been," adding, "The performance is over." Federal agents from the FBI and IRS raided his home July 12. Locke maintains his family has "nothing to hide," though former pastor Justin Greenwell alleges there was "no transparency in the financials of the church."

A controversial new product is drawing national scrutiny in Minnesota, where "MyGender Dolls" — figures with removable, swappable genitals — are reportedly being rolled out to schoolchildren as young as four. The dolls, aimed at children ages four to ten, are marketed to clinicians and educators working with what the website calls "gender diverse children," and won a cash prize from the University of Minnesota's MINCORPS program plus funding from the school's Early Innovation Fund. Researchers Dianne Berg and G. Nic Rider spearheaded the project. Postdoctoral fellow Ben Parchem said the dolls help children "realize all the different options that exist for who they can be — regardless of their body parts." Critics, including former American College of Pediatricians president Dr. Quentin Van Meter, call them "just a grooming tool" with "no place in an ethical medical care world."

Maryland's Supreme Court has ruled that a defrocked bishop must move out of a church-owned home he's occupied for more than a decade. The July 23 decision in *Eritrean Orthodox Tweahdo Diocese of USA and Canada v. Abune Sinoda* centers on Abune Sinoda Tafla, who was appointed to lead the North American diocese in 2005 by Eritrean Patriarch Abune Antonios, and was removed by the church's Holy Synod in 2016 over alleged acts of disobedience. Tafla insists he's still the rightful bishop and that the Synod is illegitimate. Writing for a unanimous court, Justice Jonathan Biran said the diocese "is entitled to judgment in its favor on its claim for wrongful detainer," adding that "secular law applies" where "it does not infringe on religious prerogatives." Lower courts had sided with Tafla, citing ecclesiastical abstention.

A federal lawsuit challenging President Trump's Religious Liberty Commission has been dismissed after the administration released the documents at the center of the dispute. Americans United for Separation of Church and State announced Monday that a judge in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York tossed the February suit brought by the Interfaith Alliance, Muslims for Progressive Values, the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund, and Hindus for Human Rights, which accused the commission of violating the Federal Advisory Committee Act. The Justice Department has since posted transcripts, meeting minutes, witness testimony and hearing recommendations online. Americans United called it a "resounding concession by the government," while the plaintiffs said, "Religious liberty and pluralism are foundational American values." The commission, created by executive order in May 2025, delivered its final report to Trump last month.

A church in south Georgia is celebrating a wave of youth conversions after an outreach aimed at student athletes. First Baptist Church of Hazlehurst, which draws about 400 weekly attendees, hosted a "Night of Champions" event on July 16, organized through the ministry Strength of a Champion. Philip Worthington, the church's executive pastor of Administration and Missions, said the gathering drew roughly 500 students and coaches from four surrounding counties, and that "after reviewing the decision cards we received, we were able to identify 120 students who made decisions for Christ." He said the church is following up with each student and providing Bibles. More than 100 volunteers helped stage the first-time event. Worthington believes such gatherings can "spark a revival within the various teams and schools," adding the church hopes to partner with coaches in discipling their athletes.
