Rising singer-songwriter Kate Bollinger takes time to rock a playlist with us tonight as her latest EP "Look At It In The Light" drops today via Ghostly International!

Show Notes

As broadcast April 22, 2022 with plenty of light to look at it with while you stream.  Tonight we welcomed Kate Bollinger to the show as her latest EP and debut on Ghostly International drops called "Look At It In The Light."  Leave it to Kate to tell us she has very little to say about the songs she selected for her stellar playlist then blow our minds with a piece of irony, tragedy, and amazement just moments later!  As always, so fun to discuss tunes with this rising artist who's really been making a name supporting tours for Real Estate, Faye Webster, and L'Imperatrice.  She's on a solo headliner tour in Europe now, so big things happening deservedly so for Kate Bollinger.  Go out and check the new EP after you get a taste of the first three cuts on the show here!

It is 20 hours past midnight as the weekend raises its weary and sleepy head after an incredible & perfect day here in Gwangju and all over the peninsula, and it is time to welcome back one of our favorites on a big day for the artist. Danno here welcome to you first and foremost and thank you for getting with the program on a big night, on the mic and holding relatively steady from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? So, it’s Friday night and for the 2nd time on The Drop, we are proud to welcome Kate Bollinger to the show as our guest artist selector for this week. The artist’s latest EP Look At It In The Light just dropped hours ago local time, and the Virginia native will be taking over the playlist in hour 2 this evening and we’ll be showcasing some of the wares from the new mini album throughout the show along with some of Kate’s favorites and inspirations. For right now though, we start with an absolute gem of old school Japanese citypop from Taeko Onuki that Kate actually hipped me to, and this song is something we both adore and we hope you do as well. This is The Drop.
Taeko Onuki – Tokai
________
The Drop has begun the weekend proper here on our guests and requests Friday night. As far as the former of those, our guest artist selector tonight is the lovely and talented Kate Bollinger who is out with the Look At It In The Light EP today via Ghostly International, and the artist will join us on the phone in hour 2 this evening to take over with a playlist for you to close the show.
To start the show tonight though, that was something that Kate Bollinger actually hipped me to when she contributed to our Damyang Drop monthly playlist last year, that was a gem of Japanese city pop by Taeko Onuki called Tokai, which translates as city, but can also mean the Tokyo City Assembly. This song appeared on an album called Sunshower that was rather underwhelming as far as critical and commercial success at the time of release in 1977, it has since become a critical and tastemaker darling. If you haven’t listened to this album, the artist’s career 2nd, do yourself a favor and throw it on. An incredible LP.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast…
So now that we’ve got the ball rolling tonight we’re going to continue with the city pop vibe here in part 1 but go with some hometown Korean stuff from Stella Jang, Meaningful Stone, and NAMI to give the big up to the local ladies. THIS is The Drop on your Kate Bollinger Friday night.
________________
Back on The Drop and into the final airbreak for here in the city pop first quarter of our nightly game of audio mirrors. Danno here making waves, and we’re going through a citypop-themed first quarter here as our guest Kate Bollinger and myself are huge fans of this style of music, and we have some more folk stuff lined up for part 2 tonight. Kate Bollinger is out with Look At It In The Light today, and we’ll get a listen to part of that EP shortly to start the 2nd quarter. For right now though, let’s get with the info on those Korean bumps we just played in the preceding block…
Stella Jang – It’s Beautiful (Digging Club Seoul version) (…one of our favorites to play on the show, and a tremendous award-winning artist based in Seoul. Jang recently announced she’s getting married, so very exciting things going on there. This version of it’s beautiful was put out late in 2018.)
Meaningful Stone – Beep-Boop Beep-Boop (…another favorite here on the show, we need to congratulate Kim Deut-dol for reaching a million streams on Spotify with this tune, which appeared on the artist’s critical darling of an LP A Call From My Dream, released in 2020.)
NAMI – I Want To Be Closer To You (…for some truly old school stuff to finish, this tune (Korean 가까이 하고 싶은 그대) is celebrating 30 years since release in 1992. The artist, true name Kim Myeong-ok, is one of the OG pop music superstars of the peninsula, having made a huge name back starting in the 1980s.)
Okay, so we’ll go with a couple more tunes here in our city pop first stanza of the radiological orchestra, and up next is Grebes with a cut called Halo, and then to finish we’ll go with Stray Fossa and a cut called How Come to finish closer to home for our guest artist selector. This is The Drop on your Look At It In The Light Friday night.
Grebes – Halo
Stray Fossa – How Come?
II
The Drop returns as we have cold opened the 2nd can in our Kate Bollinger 4 pack for this evening’s guest artist selector showcase. You just heard a pair of tunes from Kate Bollinger’s new EP out just hours ago called Look At It In The Light, and to recap that was the title track followed by the ultra smooth opening salvo to the mini record called I Found Out. We will be on the phone in hour 2 tonight with the artist, who is taking over our 2nd hour with some very choice tunes.
Kate Bolllinger – Look At It In The Light ( …)
Kate Bollinger – I Found Out ( ….)
Now before we continue with what we’re doing here….#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
So to continue with part 2, we’ve lined up some more indie & folk tunes for the next block, and we’ll lead off with Feist to be followed by Big Thief and Lang Lee, all of which we’ll break down but certainly not off after the square dance stops. THIS is The Drop on your Look At It In The Light Friday night.
____________
The Drop continues tonight as start wrapping up our first half this evening. Currently warming up with some folk stuff for Kate Bollinger, who joins us via phone starting in part 3 and takes over the 2nd half of the show. For right now, let’s run down the last block...
Feist – Young Up (…this cut was on Kate’s playlist for hour 2, but we had to cut it due to time considerations. Leslie Feist is the main artist behind this project, who’s also a former member of Broken Social Scene. This tune appeared on Feist’s 2017 album Pleasure, so do check if you liked that number.)
Big Thief – Sparrow (…this one I just can’t get enough of, from the Brooklyn band’s latest LP, a double in fact called Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You, and what can you say? Adrienne Lenker’s mastery of songwriting and delivery just seems boundless.)
Lang Lee – Generation of Tribulation (…back to Korea to finish that block, this one is from an album released last year called There Is A Wolf, and as far as folk albums go, this LP is probably album of the year in our estimation for 2021. Brilliant.)
So, before we go to part 3 we’re gonna go out to space for a quick float in the ether to close the first half. Up next is Alice Phoebe Lou whom we’ll hear more from on Kate Bollinger’s playlist in part 3 shortly, and this tune about a defiant dying star is called Galaxies. To finish and most likely for some bonus minutes on the streaming version of the show, we have Neon Bunny off their 2021 album KOSMOS, another favorite of ours from last year and this final joint is called Bloom. THIS is The Drop on your Kate Bollinger in the light Friday night, and it is indeed halftime.
